This weekend, everybody in the know hits the road for at least one of the two days of the Old Town Temecula Bluegrass Festival.

Beyond that and the details for Temecula, we have a complete guide to Music-on-TV through the whole weekend, and word of a very special show that happens Sunday in L.A., all in this edition.

We said we have one very special L.A. show to share with you. “SECRETS OF THE MEGILLAH” happens Sunday, March 16, 7:30-9:30 pm, and the details are within.

Now, if you're IN TEMECULA for the annual FREE (an' always smiles-galore) Bluegrass Festival, you'll have options: you can buy tix for the festival's big Saturday evening show, and/or other non-bluegrass live shows at "The Merc" from alt-country to intimate classical; or you can start your St. Patrick's Day early with Irish music in nearby Murrieta at the Shamrock. You'll find matinee-and-evening tunefulness at the Merc or the Shamrock, in addition to the all-day-both-days free festival.

If you're ANYWHERE ELSE -- from Santa Barbara to San Diego -- there are concerts, coffeehouse shows, bar gigs, dinner gigs, showcases, and featured virtuosos from nu-old-trad-alt-post Folk-Americana to blues to (other) bluegrass, to Cajun to cowboy to Celtic, to honky-tonkin' two-steppin', and even non-stuffy classical music in venues large and small, from fancy to cozy.

You'll find live music at McCabe's, the Coffee Gallery Backstage (matinee & evening, including some bigtime Irish acts there), at the nighttime is the right time at the Arcadia Blues Club, Boulevard Music, Viva Cantina, the Cowboy Palace, the Folk Music Center in Claremont, Segerstrom Hall (OC Performing Arts Center), the Dorothy Chandler (L.A. Music Center), the Grand Annex and Alvas Showroom (both in San Pedro), the Auld Dubliner, the Whale & Ale, the Mint, Hotel Cafe, Molly Malone's, Finn McCool's, Yolie's in Ventura, all over th' place in Long Beach, in San Diego's Gaslamp, at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, at your favorite house concert series, and at likely and unlikely indoor and outdoor places and spaces from hither to yon.

♪  Annual OLD TOWN TEMECULA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL, Sat & Sun, is FREE

Temecula is now claiming they have “The finest Bluegrass Festival on the West Coast.” That’s plenty arguable, but the certainly do produce a good FREE festival with two stages and plenty of porch jams. And Temecula’s charming downtown has an 1880s-1890s-theme building code, so there is plenty of charm and porches. This year features over a dozen top bluegrass bands from around the nation, including Bluegrass Ect., Silverado, and part-time bluegrass / plenty Celtic Sligo Rags. Daytime concerts are all free. Tickets are required for the Saturday night indoor concert at the theater, and can be purchased at www.temeculatheater.org

A special treat for overnight campers on Friday evening will include bluegrass bands at various Old Town restaurants, and a special concert at Old Town Temecula Community Theater featuring CURLY TAYLOR & ZYDECO TROUBLE with opener the BAYOU BROTHERS.

Saturday and Sunday Workshops are offered by participating musicians and are free of charge. Plus, it’s wine country, and a scenic part of the world.

In addition to all that’s officially scheduled, there’s more, including Friday evening, 6-9 pm, at the Third Street Smokehouse with the 3RD STREET BLUEGRASS BAND; and OLD HAYWIRE plays the Antique Faire both days, 2-5 pm, across from Rosas; THE WIMBERLEYS play Saturday at Mad Madeline’s Fresh Produce at the Farmer's Market, 8 am-1 pm.

Tickets for the SATURDAY EVENING CONCERT at 7 pm always sell-out by midday Saturday. This year features the James King Band, Bluegrass Etc., and Silverado. Tix are $20, at:

Sun, Mar 16, in L.A.:
7:30-9:30 pm  “SECRETS OF THE MEGILLAH,” presented by Jubilation Musical Society, promises “a new form of concert --- “a ‘Guitorah’ concert that reveals the parts of the story of Purim that are usually kept secret,” and it’s a house concert in Los Angeles 90041.

This isn’t just for people interested in Old Testament or Jewish history. It promises to be highly creative and entertaining for everyone, and you might just leave with the satisfaction of lots of fresh insight and new understandings. Bill Burnett tells us, “It’s Ed-jew-cation with a strict ban on boredom. JMS recently performed ‘The Young Maccabees’ at The Skirball Cultural Center’s Hannukah Festival, and received standing ovations for its full-length musical ‘MEM’ at Temple Adat Ari El in Valley Village.”

The concert – “Secrets of the Megillah” — combines elements of popular music with that of a rabbinic drash to produce “drashsong,” an informative and exciting way to examine and perform the Megillah. At the concert, Bill Yuval Burnett will grapple with parts of the Megillah that you wouldn’t hear about at a traditional Purim fest. These include: Vashti’s hanging, Haman’s lineage, Esther in the Harem and many others. Expect rousing audience participation, and there is a discussion at the conclusion of the event.
