There’s an “under the radar” tribute to PETE SEEGER tonight at 6 pm, with lots of L.A.’s “A" List roots musicians. See listing. See all the listings. There's PLENTY happening.

Today is the Annual "L.A. MARATHON." And whenever people in music circles in L.A. think of that, we always think of KELLY ZIRBES of roadhouse blues band KELLY’S LOT, and how, three years running, she completed the 26.2 miles of the marathon, then continued running to the stage, where she energetically belted-out the blues with her band for two more hours. No word on whether she’s running the marathon today.


March 9th in History…

√   On this day in 1822, the first patent for artificial teeth was granted. Note that was 23 years after the death of George Washington, and his famous false teeth, which are oft falsely described.

√  It’s the birthday, in 1454, of AMERIGO VESPUCCI, the guy whose first name was awarded to the New World. That was, of course, an accident, when a sixteenth century German mapmaker wrongly attributed Amerigo Vespucci with discovering the Americas, and named the continents for him: Amerigo ~ Americas. To think, we could just as easily have been the Columbians – or the Vespuccians – or just “those illegal immigrants” who brought smallpox from Europe.

This has the cheapest admission of any good-sized festival in years (only FIVE BUCKS!), and the schedule bears close examination -- in advance -- for who is performing on what days. For example, Friday night will draw a good crowd with THE FENIANS and SLIGO RAGS playing their only sets at the three-day event.

Quick history: The long-running pre-St. Patrick’s Day “L.A. County Irish Faire” decided to change its schedule to become a midsummer event and go elsewhere, and the experienced professional folks at Fairplex, aware they were about to lose a good event in early March, decided to produce their own “Irish Fest.” Hence, this is it, in its inaugural year, with two music stages.

Also, we spend an intense weekend together at a retreat in January, and after this, everyone comes to know one another so much better that the group really begins to form its own culture. It’s very exciting, and it means that the level of music-making rises.”

Maestro Gutiérrez adds, “At the retreat, the students had the opportunity to get to know each other better, socialize and participate in a session of acting and group exercises, which helped them to feel and share the energy around them while performing, be more expressive and work as a team. I’m most proud of their positive attitude and the high level of performance they are accomplishing.”

The outstanding young musicians of PSYO dive into an afternoon of 20th-century music that ranges from well-known film scores to music from the electroacoustic and neoclassical movements, with a little Argentinian flare to wrap it all up.

“For me it is very important to expose the youth orchestra to as many varieties of genres, musical styles and different ways of musical expression as possible,” says Gutiérrez. “The diversity of musical movements that occurred during the 20th century offers the possibility to expand that exposure beyond the traditional orchestral repertoire.”

This show has been almost under the radar, amidst the many celebrations of the life of the late Pete Seeger. There is no one who could more definitively be called the Father of American Folk Music than Pete Seeger. When Pete died at 94 on January 27th, he left us with far more to celebrate than to mourn. Whether he was sailing down the Hudson, playing his banjo, writing and collecting songs or organizing the best in the human spirit, Pete Seeger was always a man of song and soul.

“It is in that spirit that the Coffee Gallery Backstage and some of L.A.’s finest folk singers, musicians and songwriters gather together for ‘A Tribute to Pete Seeger: A Time to Sing,’ says venue impresario Bob Stane. Performers include Carla Olson, Susie Glaze, John York, Ross Altman, and Matt Cartsonis.

Carla Olson is a pioneer in folk, alt-country and Americana music. She is a founding member of the legendary Textones who helped create alt-country scene in L.A in the 80’s. Most recently she has released the critically acclaimed, Have Harmony Will Travel with guest artists Richie Furay, Juice Newton, John York and Peter Case.
+
Suzie Glaze along with The Hilonesome Band,have been blazing a unique new grass, folk and country trail that has made a significant mark nationwide. Her work paying with and in tribute to folk singing legend and contemporary of Pete Seeger, Jean Richie is both poignant and enriching.
+
John York is no stranger to the CGBS audience as a part of Barry McGuire’s Tripping the 60’s show and the show formerly titled The Byrds and Beyond. He was a member of The Byrds in 1968 and went on to perform with Gene Clark, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel among many others. As a member of The Byrds and as a solo artist he has performed such Pete Seeger classics as Turn, Turn, Turn and Bells of Rhymney countless times.

Ross Altman sometimes calls himself a ‘songfighter,’ in that his songs fall in the tradition of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie helping to bring comfort to the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable. He is a prolific writer, commentator and among the finest living topical songwriters.
+
Matt Cartsonis is L.A.’s premier Americana multi-instrumentalist. He currently performs around the country (and at the Coffee Gallery on occasion) with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder, John McCuen. He has also been working recently with McCuen and John Carter Cash on a project paying tribute to the music of the Carter Family. He was a personal friend of Pete’s Seeger’s and participated in many festivals along the Hudson River with him.
