FESTIVAL,
in Santa Clarita:
21st Annual ‘SANTA CLARITA COWBOY FESTIVAL” concludes with Sunday's events and performances at Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studios, in Old Newhall (Santa Clarita).
+
This is an excellent event, but we do need to qualify our endorsement. Melody Ranch is a large, sprawling, and active studio. Warner Bros. is currently doing a production that has 2/3 of the place behind tall barricades. So this year's festival is jammed and crammed into the remaining space. The quality of the entertainment is as good as always, with top acts. But there is far less seating at every stage, because everything has been condensed and shrunk into the available space.
+
The Guide ran a Ticket Alert back in December, when tix first became available for all events. Some peripheral events are now sold-out. The Guide’s latest News Feature on the event, including how to get tickets, is reprinted in full, below.

ANNUAL SANTA CLARITA COWBOY FESTIVAL, THIS WEEKEND, IS NATION’S BEST
+
Hey, pard, when it comes to the hottest and best western musicians on the circuit, and ’purt near anything to do with the full spectrum of cowboy culture old, new, and on TV and on the silver screen then and now, nothing beats the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival at Melody Ranch™ Motion Picture Studio. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the 2014 event promises to be reprise festival fan favorites and a series of authentic on- and off-site events guaranteed to delight visitors of all ages. The Festival actually includes more than a week that is chockfull of events. (The Guide brought you a Ticket Alert months ago, before most of those peripheral events sold-out). The MAIN two-day Festival still has tickets available, and takes place this weekend, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Melody Ranch™ Motion Picture Studio, and this year promises to bring the top traditional cowboy, contemporary western, and western swing bands and artists, plus the top cowboy poets in the nation.
+
Named the “Best Cowboy Music Gathering” by True West magazine, the 21st Annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival will also feature the best in authentic Western gear, lots of tasty food, activities for all ages (including an exceptionally good kids program), living history exhibits, and show-stopping live music, cowboy poetry, and western storytelling performances.
+
Outstanding performers return, including Texas-based Don Edwards, and L.A.’s own Cow Bop. Playing the Main Stage are many festival favorites, including Sons of the San Joaquin, Dave Stamey, Jon Chandler, and Belinda Gail. This year, the Festival welcomes several outstanding acts to the Main Stage for the first time including, Mary Kaye, The Lucky Stars, Allegretto and Espinosa, Dave Bourne, and Southern Cal faves the Tom Corbett Band. Poets Waddie Mitchell and Paul Zarzyski will spin tales of the West and the Battalion Band of California returns with their authentic 19th century Civil War music.
+
The California Music Hall stage and the Cowboy Corner Stage will feature many of the Main Stage acts for more intimate shows, and they’re continuing their established tradition with the Festival’s Heritage Stage featuring both traditional Western and Native American entertainment. Melody Ranch is an ENTIRE old west movie-set TOWN where trhe buildings have interiors that are occupied by Festival vendors. Just outside all the doors are wooden boardwalks and dirt streets. Main Street will feature performers like world champion gun spinner Joey Dillon, magician Pop Haydn, fiddler David Rainwater, and roper Dave Thornbury.
+
If you’re in pursuit of even more nostalgia-steeped Western experiences, more events happen around Santa Clarita during the Festival weekend. Tickets are on sale now for:
. √ “Western Film Tour – Part 1,” Thu, Apr 24.
. √ “Walking Tour of Newhall’s Walk of Western Stars,” William S. Hart Park & Hart Mansion Museum, Fri, Apr 25.
. √ “Californio Fiesta de Rancho Camulos” with Dave Stamey, Fri, Apr 25.
. √ “Cowboy Cabaret with Cow Bop and The Lucky Stars” at the Repertory East Playhouse, Sat, Apr 26.
. √ “An Evening with Jon Chandler and Belinda Gail” at Hart Mansion , Sat, Apr 26.
. √ “Behind the Scenes Tour of Melody Ranch,” Sun, Apr 27.
+
On Saturday and Sunday, all thr stages get started at 10:30 am. Go early. You'll ride the festival shuttle into Melody Ranch, and a waiting line forms for that.
+
Ticket prices are thoughtfully established for different budgets. A one-day Festival pass is $20 for adults, $10 for kids age 12 and under (kids under age 3 are FREE). A two-day Festival pass is $30 for adults, $15 for kids age 12 and under (and kids under 3 are still FREE, both days). You can enjoy VIP perqs with a “Friends of the Festival” pass for $150.

SOLD OUT – 8th Annual “STAGECOACH MUSIC FESTIVAL” happens on a big scale at the sprawling Empire Polo Club, 81-800 Avenue 51, Indio 92201; 760-342-2762.
+
AXS TV has broadcast rights and will do 20 hours from Stagecoach, beginning Friday.
+
For Roots-Americana fans, the festival again brings wonderful lineups on the "B" and "C" stages that they call the "Mustang" and "Palomino" Stages, where music starts each day at 1 pm & 1:30 pm, respectively.
+
The festival's "Mane" Stage features Nashville pop-country acts and apocalyptic sound.
+
If you have tickets, plan to get to the parking entrances a couple hours early each day. It will take you that much time to get parked, get into the grounds, and set-up your bag chair at one of the roots music stages. (Yes, indeedy, the Guide DID bring you a "Ticket Alert" for this, many months ago.)
+
There are lots of great acts, including, but not limited to: Asleep at the Wheel, Calico, Crystal Gayle, Don McLean, Earthworm Ensemble, Eric Church, John Prine, Florida Georgia Line, Hunter Hayes, Jason Isbell, Michael Nesmith, Nacona, Luke Bryan, Nitty Gritty Dirt band, Nicki Bluhm, Sarah Jarosz, Shelby Lynne, Shovels and Rope, The Howlin' Bros, The Wailin' Jennys, Trampled by Turtles, The Seldom Scene, Wanda Jackson, and I See Hawks in L.A. featuring guest appearances by Rick Shea, Victoria Jacobs, and Phoebe Bridgers. The Hawks & co play twice on Sunday, at 1 pm on the "Palomino Stage," and at 7 pm on the "Honky Tonk Stage."
+
Among the “Mane Stage” headliners are ERIC CHURCH, JASON ALDEAN, LUKE BRYAN, LORETTA LYNN, HUNTER HAYES, BRANTLEY GILBERT, and FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE. It’s likely that those are the ones you’ll see on AXS TV coverage. The Stagecoach website has the complete lineup for all stages (see below).
+
Of course, Folk-Americana music fans could care less about the Nashville pop-country "stars," and instead look forward with strong enthusiasm to the top bluegrass, Americana, folk and western music acts booked on the "B" and "C" stages. Those "sideshows" at Stagecoach are often inclusive of the best bookings at top folk festivals – despite the challenge of apocalyptic over-amplification from the Nashville "Mane" Stage, half a mile away. There’s also the “HONKYTONK DANCE HALL,” new this year, and with a good roots music lineup.
+
Whichever stage(s) you intend to frequent, tickets / passes are for the entire event, and it sold-out well in advance. The Guide brought you a TICKET ALERT back in October, when tix went on sale.

He's here to attend the big cowboy festival -- but he is not performing there -- THIS is your chance to see him.

Who does JIM JONES sound like, you ask? Well,of course, he sounds like Jim Jones (not the Guyana guy, not the rapper!). If you try to describe him, though, here’s what it comes down to… he’s a Western Folk Singer in the tradition of Woody Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and more recently, Ian Tyson.
+
He’s a native Texan who moved a little farther West so he could enjoy the beauties of New Mexico. He sings songs about the West… cowboys, horses & cattle, cattle rustlers, the coming of the train. He also sings songs about the people and the land, the rivers and the mountains, the beauty of the Western sky. He’s a bit of a philosopher although he keeps that well-hidden under a sharp and self-deprecating wit.
+
You’ll have a lot of fun at his show and you might find yourself thinking about something a little deeper, later when you have time to reflect. He tells some of the corniest jokes you’ve ever heard and unfortunately, when you groan, it just eggs him on. Nobody’s perfect. He plays a mean acoustic guitar; at times, you’ll think there are two guitars up there. If you like songs that tell a story, if you like singer-songwriters who can play the heck out of their instrument, if you like having fun and feeling good, you’ll like Jim.
