√ Annual “KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL” runs 18 straight days, Thu, May 22-Sun, Jun 8, at Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country.

A post arrived a couple days ago from Southern Cal-based musician / bestselling author Paul Zollo: “In Kerrville with my brother-in-song Darryl Purpose. Had a beautiful time hearing the beautiful Judy Collins last night - with a wonderful tribute to the great Pete Seeger – and seeing and hearing new friends and old, like Freebo F. Freebo who is here and so many others – and all the new friends.”

That’s indicative of what happens there.
+
Celebrating songwriters for 43 years, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest continuously running festival of its kind in North America. It was created by Rod Kennedy, affectionately known as “The RodFather,” who died in April. In addition to concerts each evening, Kerrville features “Ballad Tree” song-sharing sessions, campfire jam sessions, concerts and activities for children, organized canoe trips on the Guadelupe River and Hill Country bike rides, a professional development program for teachers, as well as a three-day songwriters school and instrumental workshops. The 19th Annual USA Songwriting Competition's deadline is a few hours away. This evening is the last chance to enter your songs and / or lyrics. It is easy to enter with your YouTube, Soundcloud or Reverbnation profile URL, and that makes it fast and easy to enter. Previous entrants have been signed to record labels and music publishers and hit the charts, some even going Platinum, selling over 1 million copies.

Starting Saturday, the contest will begin adding new faces and stories to their wall of successful songwriters and music makers on their facebook page.

Earlybird registration ends tonight at midnight for the FAR-West 2014 11th Annual Music Conference, October 16-19, at the 2014 Marriott City Center in Oakland, CA.

FAR-West, one of five regions of Folk Alliance International, celebrates folk music, dance and related performing arts through our annual conference. They invite you to join them this October to listen, celebrate, recognize, and enjoy the richness of folk music and arts in the West.

Legendary singer-songwriter, Rodriguez, makes his Greek Theatre, LA debut on Friday, May 30. Well-known in the U.S. for his 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man,” Rodríguez's fame and music have now reached audiences worldwide.
+
Rodriguez, a self-taught guitarist, began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered post-industrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Factin 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971. These compositions went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family.

In the mid-1970s, his music gained airplay in Australia and New Zealand and he toured the area finding limited success as an overseas performer.
+
Rodriguez was unaware that he had reached legendary folk-rock super stardom status in South Africa, where mistaken rumors circulated that he had perished. As it turns out, South African anti-Apartheid activists and musicians alike were inspired by his counterculture lyrics.
+
In the late 1990s, South African fans finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career. Rodriguez now tours extensively in South Africa, Australia, Europe, and the U.S., where he takes thoughtful appreciation in greeting longtime fans, and a new generation of listeners who find common ground in his music. His albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality have since been re-released on Light in the Attic records and the Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack is available on Sony Legacy. International media attention and accolades have since been bestowed upon both the film and the music.

Marked by glittering mosaics, luminous icons, and opulent churches, the Byzantine Empire (A.D. 330–1453) flourished for more than one thousand years. Over 170 national treasures from Greece illustrate the development of a mighty empire, from its pagan origins to a deeply spiritual Christian society. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with “Heaven and Earth: Byzantine Illumination at the Cultural Crossroads” at the Getty Center.

The exhibition was organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, Athens, with the collaboration of the Benaki Museum, Athens, in association with the J.
