FOOL’S GOLD is tonight’s headliner. And they epitomize why we hardly ever list “world music.” Within their genre, they are quite respected. But exactly what is that genre? Read on. Fool’s Gold is an Afro-pop band which formed in Los Angeles in 2006. The band rotates around Luke Top (real name Nativ Top) and Lewis Pesacov and also enlists friends and colleagues that include members of the bands Foreign Born and Glasser, former members of We Are Scientists, The Fall and a variety of visual artists.

It's not often you get an artist like THIS in Orange County. BILLY JOE SHAVER is one of the few songwriters that Bob Dylan covers in concert, and to whose songs Waylon Jennings dedicated an entire album, “Honky Tonk Heroes,” considered the first Outlaw album. Johnny Cash called him "My favorite songwriter," and he recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman, which makes him another kind of hero. One more caveat: The Americana Music Association awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.

The wonderful CARRIE NEWCOMER makes a rare west coast appearance at McCabe´s this evening in what promises to be (if history is any indication) a magical night. In a world that encourages us to move faster and think bigger, Newcomer invites listeners to slow down and reflect on the small things that make life worthwhile. As Rolling Stone puts it, she "asks all the right questions and refuses to settle for easy answers." This is clearly evident on her latest release, A Permeable Life, a skillfully arranged and performed collection of folk roots tracks, with Appalachian and classical influences, all delivered in her gorgeous voice.

Fri, Aug 15, in San Pedro:
8 pm BETTMAN & HALPIN play the Grand Annex, 34 W 6th St, San Pedro 90731; 310-833-6362.
+
Bettman & Halpin's set is a heady mix of joyous, original acoustic folk music with bluegrass, blues and jazz strains. Bettman is an award-winning songwriter who has been compared to Emmylou Harris and Allison Krauss, and Halpin has opened for greats: Merle Haggard and The Steve Miller Band. Together, they are the frontline of modern Americana.
+
Stephanie Bettman is an accomplished writer, singer, and fiddler: her lyrics are infused with wit and wisdom, poetry and insight. Vocally she draws comparison to the soaring soprano of Joan Baez and the plaintive emotion of Emmylou Harris. Meanwhile, her fiddling, which combines elements of bluegrass and jazz, is filled with influences from such masters as Stephane Grappelli, Byron Berline and Johnny Gimble. A former actress and trapeze artist, Ms Bettman is at ease in front of an audience and creates intimacy with her crowd no matter the size.
+
Luke Halpin is a renowned multi-instrumentalist. A master of the guitar and the mandolin, impressive on fiddle, banjo, and adept at nearly anything he picks up. Halpin draws inspiration from the likes of Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor and Tony Rice and holds his own in comparison. A dynamic and sensitive vocalist himself, the harmony blend he and Ms Bettman achieve is chilling and at times simply transcendent. Halpin has a long history in the music biz, having shared the stage with the likes of Merle Haggard, Lone Star and The Steve Miller Band (to name a few). His quirky sense of humor is a perfect foil to Stephanie’s dry witty presence.
+
As a duo, they have been a featured act at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS along with musical heroes Byron Berline, Michael Martin Murphy w/ Pat Flynn, and Tommy Emmanuel. Their music creates a fully acoustic, delightfully eclectic sound far greater than the sum of its parts: taking the listener from up-tempo down home fiddlin’, to soulful sorrowful ballads, to super hooky folk/pop with catchy melodies and lyrics that will stick with you long after the concert is over. Touring together since 2008, Bettman & Halpin have been recognized in various Regional and National competitions, including:
+
Grand Prize Winners in the So Cal Live Acoustic Music Competition Winners in Southern California’s Topanga Banjo /Fiddle Contest Music Connection’s Top 25 New Music Critiques Their 2 CDs have received national and international radio play along with critical acclaim, both reaching the top 10 on the National Folk DJ chart.

Featuring John Storie, Perry Smith and Jeff Stein, New West Guitar Group has been making their mark as a fresh, cutting-edge guitar ensemble. Performing classic popular covers, jazz standards and exciting originals, NWGG combines the acoustic and electric guitar to create their signature sound.
+
Based in Los Angeles and New York, the ensemble tours extensively through the United States and aboard giving concerts and master classes. Praised as “sharp and refined” by the Seattle Times, New West Guitar Group infuses its latest disc 'Big City' with its signature blend of laid-back virtuosity and expert arrangements that “sometimes verge on the orchestral” (All Music Guide). 'Big City' is the group's second release on Summit Records and the music regularly featured on NPR and jazz/americana radio stations all over the country.
+
Graduates of USC’s Thornton School of Music, the trio’s versatility as players and composers have given them the reputation as pioneers in the realm of guitar ensemble.

“Smith, Stein and Storie play seamlessly together.
