Breaking News, Oct 14…

√ ARLO GUTHRIE TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF "ALICE'S RESTAURANT MASSACREE" WITH NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN 2015

Perhaps it’s generational. But we think it’s transcendent. Hundreds of radio stations get anticipatory phone calls from listeners every Thanksgiving to be sure they’ll spin it. And when Arlo talked about “Alice’s Restaurant” on the editor’s L.A. radio show, the phones went crazy.

When you can conquer mainstream media with a counter-culture song, that’s a landmark:

"A great reminder of just how effective a bit of absurdity can be when it comes to combating serious issues."
- Rolling Stone

"A quintessential Guthrie composition in the way it turns a true story into an amusing folk tale."
- New York Times

"The strength of 'Alice's Restaurant' is its feel of truth -- and how it speaks that truth to power."
- Washington Post

"If there's one Turkey Day custom in our city that people actually enjoy, it's the airing of the classic 1967 Arlo Guthrie yarn 'Alice's Restaurant Massacree'."
- Philadelphia Weekly

Legendary folk music icon Arlo Guthrie will hit the road this coming January, 2015, to embark on an 18-month North American tour celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the event that inspired the seminal song, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree,"

It’s somewhat of a surprise, since Arlo essentially stopped performing the piece after his 40th anniversary tour, which ended more than eight years ago. The Guide quoted him as saying, “How would you like it if your whole life was a Groundhog Day of the same twenty-minute song, everywhere you went?”

But people everywhere still want to hear it. His signature musical monologue that runs more than 18 minutes, "Alice's Restaurant" is both an anti-war piece and a Thanksgiving holiday anthem to families across the globe. Indeed, it all originates from Guthrie's experience on Thanksgiving in 1965.

Each night on the forthcoming tour, Guthrie will perform his most prominent work in its entirety, as well as selections from every full-length studio album he's released since his debut, “Alice's Restaurant,” in 1967. In addition to the announced tour dates listed below, additional shows will be added in the coming months.

So, far, the Southern California gets four shows:
April 6 - Los Angeles, in Disney Hall
April 10 & 11 - Irvine, at the Irvine Barclay Theater
April 12 - Santa Clarita, in the very nice Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center
(all other dates, nationwide, are below)

Folk songs enduring many decades of change only become classics when storylines remain just as relevant today as they were when originally composed. "Alice's Restaurant" is of this ilk; it's now weaved into the fabric of American society. However listeners interpret the quintessential tune, we can rest assured that people of all different walks of life come together singing that famous chorus, "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant..."

"The Alice's Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour" will bring together an ensemble of fine musicians that may never have graced the stage together at one time. Arlo's deft band includes TERRY HALL on drums, BOBBY SWEET on guitar and vocals, DARREN TODD on guitar, and Arlo’s son ABE GUTHRIE on keyboards.

Each show will also be “curated” with a special multi-media presentation, featuring previously unseen images from the Guthrie archives. More than 75,000 photos have recently been digitized, and selections will be projected along with PETER STAR's claymation film depicting Arlo's "Motorcycle Song".

With her one-of-a-kind powerhouse voice and engaging storytelling flair, WYNONNA – joined by her 3-piece band including her husband, producer and award-winning artist CACTUS MOSER – will share with audiences the personal stories behind what inspired her to record the songs from her 30-year platinum career.

“Wynonna and Friends: Stories & Song” will hit Indiana, Idaho, California, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, before wrapping Sunday, March 8 in Boston, MA.

You can purchase tickets now and stay informed on new confirmed shows at:

www.wynonna.com

“The concept for the ‘Stories & Song’ tour has been a dream of mine for many years and will be unlike any tour I’ve ever done before,” explains WYNONNA about the inspiration for this special tour. “My husband and professional partner, Cactus Moser, and I have put this show together and, along with the band [THE BIG NOISE], we all feel a renewed passion and we believe that this music is being celebrated in a whole new way. That gives me a great deal of hope and it is my prayer that others who come to our shows will experience that hope as well.”

When asked why she feels now is the time for a tour like this, WYNONNA says, “I have shared the stage with some of the greatest singers and musicians in the world and I have recorded with artists from all genres of music. It has been an amazing journey for me. I'm an ordinary woman that extraordinary things have happened to because I choose to continue to suit up and show up where I am called. I am more passionate now than I have ever been about my life, my gift, my faith, hopes and dreams, and I want so much to share my story and my songs with my fans. I have experienced so many personal and professional highs and lows on this journey, and having been on the road for 34 years now, I am so grateful for the wisdom and experience I have gained throughout all that has happened on and off stage. I'm looking forward to sharing my message with others, to celebrate this time in my life with the fans that have supported me all these years, as well as connect with new fans.”

As a five-time Grammy winner and New York Times bestselling author, WYNONNA’s career has always revolved around telling stories. Whether she’s using her rich, commanding voice to sing one of her countless hits or sitting down for one of her many bold, honest television appearances, WYNONNA always gets her point across with unflinching honesty and wisdom gained over the course of her very public life.

WYNONNA has been working with husband / producer / drummer Cactus Moser on solo material for her 8th studio album due out in 2015 on Curb Records. She recently opened up to “Rolling Stone Country” about the direction the new music is taking, describing it as “vintage yet modern” in the July 9, 2014 edition. The full interview can be read at:

www.rollingstone.com/music/news/wynonna-gets-raw-primal-on-life-changing-new-album-20140709

The couple also recently released “Follow Me,” an original song exclusively for the film “The Hornet’s Nest” which features unprecedented real footage to tell the story of an elite group of U.S. troops sent on a dangerous mission deep inside one of Afghanistan’s most hostile valleys.

They performed the powerful track on “Good Morning America” back on May 22; you can watch it at:

√ NEW ORLEANS’ ICON, PROFESSOR LONGHAIR: KEY RE-RELEASE FROM RHINO

The beginning of each week, the folks at Rhino Records dig into the vaults, find something old, and make it new again as a “Mono Monday” release. This week is a compilation rather than a studio album, but it’s an especially important compilation, one which provides a glimpse into the New Orleans sound circa the late 1940s and early 1950s via the early recordings of a gentlemen named HENRY ROELAND BYRD, known to his friends as “Roy,” and to fans of his music as the one and only PROFESSOR LONGHAIR.

Originally released in 1972, “New Orleans Piano” is a compilation of material recorded by the good Professor between 1949 and 1952, including his take on “Tipitina,” which joined the US National Recording Registry in 2011. And there’s much more in the mix to enjoy, including “Mardi Gras in New Orleans,” “She Walks Right In,” “Walk Your Blues Away,” and a dozen others. In fact, when Rolling Stone compiled its 2003 list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” “New Orleans Piano” was there in the #220 spot, which is a remarkably strong showing for an album which was far more influential than it ever was commercially successful.

Professor Longhair continued his career as a performing and recording artist all the way up until his death in 1980 at the age of 61, releasing some highly entertaining work into his later years, including the trifecta of “Rock ‘n Roll Gumbo” (1977), “Live on the Queen Mary” (1980), and “Crawfish Fiesta” (1980). But if you’re in search of a single-disc look into his early career, “New Orleans Piano” is absolutely indispensable.

This past week, since I flew back to America, I’ve been doing shows with some old friends, songwriters CRAIG BICKHARDT and DON HENRY.

“and you’ll get an idea of how that’s possible. Tonight is our last show together on this run. We’ll be playing at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC as part of WFUV DJ John Platt’s “On Your Radar” series. What a pleasure it has been.

“But I’m not done yet. I keep looking for the Draiochte every night. In the next 10 days I’ll be playing shows on my own in PA, MD, NC and VA.”

Some artists don’t send you way up on the sidewalk with wide-load flashers on their egos. It’s refreshing when you find that – to a point. Though sometimes, you find yourself shaking your head when the situation warrants Roman Heralds with four-foot trumpets and a regiment spreading flower petals. Get a load of how the winner of not one, but TWO awards, announced it.

Christiane Cargill Kinney wrote, “Really cool news to share. (I won two Global Music Awards, one for songwriting and one for best instrumental performance by a musical group with my Celtic bandmates).”

Yep. She put it IN PARENTHESES.

Christiane added, “Thanks to the GMAs for these awesome trophies that I hope will inspire our kids to continue being creative and pursuing their dreams always.”

Speaking of her husband, Christiane’s pair of awards aren’t the only trophy wall additions at their house. She hastened to share, “Just wanted to take a moment this morning to brag on my hubby Seán - our shelves must now also find space for a shiny new 2014 Telly Award that he just won for an online promotional segment he directed, shot, edited, storyboarded, animated, etc. about our very favorite kilt store, Sport Kilt, who also carries his Tartan design! √ NATHAN STANLEY WINS "BLUEGRASS ALBUM OF THE YEAR" AT DOVE AWARDS

Nathan Stanley, grandson of bluegrass icon Dr. Ralph Stanley, won for his album, “Every Mile.” The honor came during the gala at the annual Dove Awards, in Nashville, Tennessee, the evening of October 7, 2014. The prestigious event is presented by the Gospel Music Association.

The young Stanley’s "winning album was produced by Terry Thompson and features notable collaborations, including one with Vince Gill on "Hand in Hand with Jesus," a duet with his legendary grandfather Dr. Ralph Stanley, and tracks with Sonya Isaacs Yeary & Becky Isaacs Bowman, Jeff & Sheri Easter, T. Graham Brown & Judy Marshall, Jeff Bates, Wes Hampton, and Adam Crabb.

"I am truly honored!" proclaimed Nathan Stanley, who continued, "This was my first Dove nomination. I cannot express how thrilled I am to have won this award, not just for me, but for my papaw. He has paved the way for so many, including me. Having him on this album was special enough, but to now share a Dove award with him takes it to another place.”

Remembering where he was, and who was making the award, Nathan added, “I want to thank everyone who played a part in making this happen. Most of all, I give all of the praise and glory to my lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Without him, this would not have been possible."

The Guide has always had a soft spot for Nathan Stanley, going back eight years, when he was much younger. After the Guide’s editor featured Nathan’s first album on his L.A. broadcast and web simulcast radio show, Nathan, then a junior high student, sent a handwritten letter of thanks – on lined notebook paper. We’ve never known how much came from his grandfather’s influence and how much was his own inclination. It made an enduring impression, either way.

√ AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS & SCIENCES TO HONOR DR. RALPH STANLEY, ROBERT REICH, ROBERT BALLARD, AL PACINO, JOHN IRVING, ANNIE PROULX, & JULES FEIFFER, ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11th

Trailblazing musician Dr. Ralph Stanley has been elected a Fellow in the Humanities and Arts category of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins a prestigious Class of 2014, a group that also includes actor and director Al Pacino, novelists John Irving and Annie Proulx, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and oceanographer and discoverer of the Titanic, Robert Ballard, among others.

In May, Stanley was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. It was his second such distinction, the first having been conferred in 1976 by Lincoln Memorial University, and the reason he includes the title of “Dr.” with his name.

On Saturday, the elder Stanley will be inducted formally into the Academy at its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Academy was founded in 1780 to recognize America's foremost "thinkers and doers." Among its past members are George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Current members include more than 250 Nobel laureates and 60 Pulitzer Prize-winners.

Recognized as the leading exponent of traditional Appalachian music and a founding father of bluegrass, Stanley has spread his sound around the world during his 68 years of touring and recording. He began his career in 1946 as the younger half of the Stanley Brothers, a group then headed by singer-songwriter Carter Stanley. The Stanley Brothers performed, recorded and appeared on television together until Carter's death in 1966.

In the years following, Stanley built and led a band that at various times featured such rising talents as Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Larry Sparks, and Charlie Sizemore. So significant was the Stanley sound in the 2000 movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" that it rocketed Ralph from icon of the bluegrass genre to superstar of music. He was profiled by novelist David Gates in “The New Yorker” magazine and went on to earn a Grammy as “Top Male Country Vocalist,” edging-out that year’s other nominees, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, and Lyle Lovett. To date, Dr. Ralph Stanley has won three Grammy awards.

Stanley's high, forlorn vocals are featured in the seven-million-selling "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. In addition, he was the first performer to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in the 21st Century. He is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.

√ PLAY DETECTIVE AT THE SYMPHONY, SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 25th

With the help of everyone’s favorite detective, none other than Sherlock Holmes himself, Pacific Symphony invites children and families to help solve the mystery of a haunted violin during a morning of music, laughter and clue-finding fun.

It's “A Sherlock Holmes Halloween,” the first concert of the 2014-15 "Family Musical Mornings" series. It's billed as "a campy, comedic turn from the traditional Halloween fare." The ever-innovative Pacific Symphony continues to find ways to make classical music attractive and accessible, and the Guide congratulates them once again for their ongoing commitment.

The premise this time around is all-ages-friendly fun. While leading the orchestra in Saint-Saëns’ spooky “Danse Macabre,” Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez hears a mysterious violin haunting the concert hall. To find out who is behind this shadow sound, played by young artist Francisco Fullana, who recently won the Johannes Brahms International Violin Competition. The maestro asks for assistance from his “good friends,” Sherlock Holmes (played by Rich Wordes) and Watson (played by Stephanie Draude), to get to the bottom of the case.

Two concerts take place, both on Saturday, Oct 25. One is at 10 am, the other at 11:30 am, both in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. Full info and advance tix are available at www.PacificSymphony.org

√ GREEK THEATRE OPERATION: CITY DELAYS DECISION ON OCTOBER 9

The Guide brought our readers a late-breaking news story in a special edition this past Tuesday. We detailed, to a much greater extent than most other journalistic sources, the controversy surrounding the impending decision by the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission to end the longtime arrangement with Nederlander and award operation of the Greek Theater to the recently merged mega-corporation, Live Nation-Ticketmaster.

The Guide’s story was picked-up by the L.A. Progressive, which greatly expanded its readership.

Thanks to public response at the Thursday morning meeting, the City’s decision about the iconic venue in Griffith Park has been postponed. You can still read our story – look in the sidebar at left in the full site, or on your mobile device, hit your “back” key and scroll to select it.
