This edition is a field report. Be sure to see the Guide's massively huge NEWS EDITION for January 22. It's available just below or in the sidebar at left.

Here's the Guide's report from the morning of Day Two at the NAMM Show in Anaheim ~ the largest annual music trade show in the world.

LIVE MUSIC HERE...

First, if you do not have a badge and you are inclined to partake of the live music performances outside the cordoned areas? You can access the stages inside the surrounding hotel lobbies, and you can access the stage in front of the basketball arena, right on Katella. And during the DAY, there's accessible music on the big stage on the plaza. But that's about it.

The main plaza stage - sponsored this year as the GoPro Stage - is now behind portable barricades.  In the evening, NAMM Show badges are required to get in just before headliner performances start, and that's true for everything inside the cordoned area after dark, including the John Lennon Songwriting Bus and the line of food trucks.

There is no longer a stage in the Convention Center lobby; badges are required at all entry doors.

Manufacturer exhibits in the surrounding hotel convention / meeting spaces mostly require NAMM badges for entry, as well.

EVENING CONCERTS in the hotel convention facilities require tickets. SOME have tix available online for purchase by the general public. The best of the latter is Saturday at 7:30; see below.

TONIGHT AT NAMM...

One of our favorite annual concerts is the one hosted on Friday night by the TORA BORA BOYS, a fine bluegrass band comprised of folks prominent in the music industry, joined by their unbelievably young guitar player. They'll open, followed by NEW WEST, then headliner JOHN JORGENSON.

There's a lot of buzz about this one, regarding who might sit-in. John's DESERT ROSE bandmate HERB PEDERSEN is here, so...

INTO SATURDAY...

"MURIEL ANDERSON’S ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT®" has an acoustic half and an electric half. It's always a wonderful and very impressive show, and those without NAMM badges can buy tickets. Artists performing include Muriel,  Laurence Juber, Janet Robin, Vicki Genfan, Steve Adelson, Miles Aubrey, David Becker, Kenny Burrell, Mimi Fox, Shaun Hopper, Henry Johnson, Scott Law, Andy Timmons, the Eclectic Electric Guitar Trio, and Invented Like Stars. The Anaheim Hilton is adjacent to the Convention Center, at 700 W Convention Way, Anaheim 92802.

Also on SATURDAY is an exciting performance / awards show that we described in a full news feature in our major edition for Jan. 22 (available just below or in the sidebar at left, depending on where you're reading this).

That event is the annual “SHE ROCKS AWARDS," and it's A NAMM event you can attend without a NAMM badge. It features performances by COLBIE CAILLAT, THE BANGLES, MINDI ADAIR, ORIANTHI, and more. It's 6-8:30 pm Saturday in the Anaheim Hilton ballroom. You can buy tickets at:

In coming days, we'll bring you a story on Friday's NAMM Breakfast Session and its keynote address. While aimed at those in the music BUSINESS, the points and strategies apply nicely to independent touring artists. The Guide's Debbie Berry attended and was impressed. So you'll know what to look for, the keynote presentation was titled:

"Epic Marketing: Win More Customers by Marketing Less!

Don't let the title fool you. The strategies for "content marketing" can help any artist!

Finally...

Just WHY is NAMM such a big deal?

We'll offer a selection of answers, at least one each day. Today's is a quote, heard Thursday on the Convention Center floor at NAMM:

“We don’t advertise much; we just come to the NAMM Show. It treats us well. We get to see our usual customers, and sometimes this is the only chance we have to visit. We look forward to meeting with new customers as well as our old friends over the course of the event.” — Noa Bonk, Ko’olau Guitar & Ukulele Company, Wahiawa, HI.
