• iZotope LAUNCHES MASTERING ACADEMY WITH JONATHAN WYNER

Cambridge, MA (May 22, 2015) – If you go, your learning experience includes tours of iconic musical sites in Boston, including Symphony Hall and Berklee College of Music. At the Mastering Academy, Audio professionals will learn how to produce their best-sounding masters through hands-on mentoring

iZotope, Inc., a leading audio technology company, is now accepting applications for its first-ever Mastering Academy event for audio professionals, to be held July 23-25, 2015.

Led by iZotope's Education Director and GRAMMY-nominated mastering expert Jonathan Wyner (David Bowie, Howie Day), with special guest Adam Ayan (Carrie Underwood, Pearl Jam), this intensive workshop combines small-group instruction with hands-on practice. Personalized mentoring from Jonathan will help take students' mastering abilities to the next level.

The majority of the training takes place in iZotope's brand-new, fully equipped mastering studio in Cambridge, MA. In this acoustically optimized listening environment, participants will learn advanced mastering techniques and best practices on a full range of state-of-the-art equipment.

Students will analyze their own habits and patterns through feedback and insight from world-renowned mastering professionals. They'll also add new pro audio skills to their arsenal, learn time-tested strategies for dealing with clients, and grow their network of pro audio peers.

"It's a real thrill to be launching our first major learning initiative of this scale," says Jonathan Wyner. "Education has always been a personal passion of mine, so I'm looking forward to working with students individually. I'll be sharing strategies and techniques so they can tackle their next mastering project with greater confidence."

Mastering Academy is the culminating event of iZotope's "Mastering Education" month. Throughout July, iZotope will offer events and resources designed to help audio professionals achieve better-sounding mastering results in their studios.

• A MEMORIAL DAY STORY…

By Glenda Rodger

On this Memorial Day weekend it is with a very heavy heart I share this story of my husband’s and my only living parent. He was decorated in WW II. He’s now a 94 year-old man. And he’s sitting in a hospital with no one listening.

He has never had any serious health problems until a couple weeks ago, when he went to the doctor because he had a bad cold. I believe he had a reaction to at least one of the ten new medicines they put him on. This man has never even had high blood pressure, let alone anything else serious. But the doctors do not believe me – what do I know.

Now, last night, they tell us “his blood type changed.” They have been giving him “A positive” blood and his blood type has always been type “O.”

How sad to live all these years, so healthy, only to be put through hell again. Let me explain. This week, another WW II Vet was in the bed next to his. He, too, “coded.” And they did not save him.

My father-in-law watched and listened as the man, a fellow veteran, took his last breath. To him, this was a sad reminder of how many times he had witnessed this before – in his war experience.

My father-in-law looked into my eyes and said to me, "Don't you think WW II was enough?"

I said to him “More than enough."

Don't give up, we will get someone to listen! For those that wonder, this is not a VA hospital. This is regular hospital in the desert town of Lancaster, California.

I will go back to work tomorrow. Luckily, he has a very hard-working wife by his side. I hope we win this one and someone listens. A wonderful teacher named Jeanne Grandstaff, many years ago said it best: "War does not prove who is right, it proves who is left."

Before we ever send our loved ones to fight – supposedly for our country – we better start taking care of the ones that have been there and done that. Their blood is on our hands and weighs heavy in our hearts.

Happy Memorial Day!

Fri-Mon, May 22-May 25,
FILM FESTIVAL,
In L.A.:
10 am-10 pm, each day 4th Annual “GARIFUNA FILM FESTIVAL” brings the theme, “A Century of Change for Indigenous Cultures,” at Electric Lodge Performing Arts, 1416 Electric Av, Venice.
+
In addition, May 26 has been proclaimed Official “Garifuna Film Day” by both the City of Los Angeles and the State of California.
+
There is a much larger performing cast involved than one usually finds at a film festival. Head Dancer is Monique MacGregor. Segunda Palarba is Cristina Tacata. Head Fire Keeper is Citlamina Tezcacoatl, and Concha is Luis Linares.
+
Official film selections include categories in film, documentaries, web series, and music videos.
+
The critically acclaimed Garifuna Film Festival captures attention from filmmakers, musicians and artists from all over the world. The festival’s focus has always been to give a message of hope and solidarity with conflicting countries and cultures proving they could work together both productively and creatively. International creators are crediting Garifuna as a multi-sensory, multi-modal, multi-literate experience to give new voice to native literacy, pride and identity. The goal is to heal the divide between nations thereby transcending petty politics and borders .
+
Garifuna’s founder and director, Freda Sideroff, is well-known for “cracking the pavement” to make new ground for this festival. Realizing what it means to be stripped of her native culture, heritage, and language – “because of the colonialist’s need to assimilate native Indigenous cultures and deny them their priceless facets of heritage,” she forged the Garifuna Foundation to help children academically, as “research shows that those who are immersed in their cultures perform better, have higher self-esteem, and lead more productive and happy lives.”
+
It is the 218th Anniversary of the Exile of Freda’s people, coincides with the 14th Anniversary of UNESCO'S Proclamation proclaiming the Garifuna language, music and dance as a heritage of humanity. “We as a people are very proud of our culture and are working toward supporting it's preservation,” she says.
+
Rare Garifuna art is being flown in from around the world for the event, including Kabbalistic art from Zfat Israel and artists Nazim, Penny Slinger, Wai-sin Tong Darbonne, Karen Redding ,Eulogia Penny Goree , John Casimiro , Isaiah Nicholas and David Friedman.
+
Guest Speaker Marianne Williamson is an American spiritual teacher, author and lecturer. She has published ten books, including four New York Times number one bestsellers. She is the founder of Project Angel Food, a meals-on-wheels program that serves homebound people with AIDS in the Los Angeles area, and the co-founder of The Peace Alliance, a grass roots campaign supporting legislation to establish a United States Department of Peace. She serves on the Board of Directors of the RESULTS organization, which works to end poverty in the United States and around the world. Williamson is also the force behind Sister Giant, a series of seminars and teaching sessions that provides women with the information and tools needed to be political candidates. Through these seminars, she encourages women to run for office and align their politics with their spiritual values.
+
Hostess Helena Cardona is a citizen of the world, calling the United States, France and Spain home. Fluent in five languages she is a graduate of American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Actor’s Studio in New York. With over 55 films to her credit, Sydney Pollack was so impressed with Helena, he based the Nicole Kidman character in The Interpreter (2005) in part on Cardona's life by making her a Sorbonne linguist and a musician. For Serendipity (2001), she co-wrote with director Peter Chelsom and composer Alan Silvestri the song Lucienne, which she also sang. Host Police Chief Joseph Paulino San Bernardino City Schools and Vector USA made SBC schools safer, more secure and saved money His strong ties in the San Bernardino community, his problem-solving skills, and his passion for making a positive difference in the lives of students is making him a role model throughout California. As police chief ,he oversees a department of 26 sworn police officers, 55 campus security officers, and more than 10 support staff. The department is responsible for ensuring the safety of the district’s 53,000 students and protecting district property.

+
This is a hot, entertaining duo from the renowned band LOAFER'S GLORY, with a special guest, the amazing "best ever" autoharp wizard, BRYAN BOWERS.
+
PATRICK SAUBER is a prodigy on banjo, mandolin, vocals. Son of old time player Tom Sauber, whom is also in the band, Patrick has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, i.e. Bill Monroe and more current styles. For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.
+
TOM SAUBER does it all, and you won't hear anyone do it better. He's a master musician in a variety of styles, a multi-instrumentalist (banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin) and singer, well grounded in tradition, with a comprehensive grasp of style and an exceptional ability to teach. Old-time fans have heard Tom’s music on his recently released CD with harmonica virtuoso Mark Graham (Thought I Heard it Blow), on his recording with Dirk Powell and John Herrmann (One-Eyed Dog), or through his performances with former Fuzzy Mountain String Band members Blanton Owen and Tom Carter. Bluegrassers know of his work with Byron Berline, John Hickman, and Alan Munde. He has also performed with cowboy musician Skip Gorman, and Cajun accordionists Joe Simien, Wilfred Latour, and Jo-el Sonnier. He has even appeared on a recent Weird Al Yankowitz recording.
+
BRYAN BOWERS, autoharp master, singer-songwriter, storyteller, multi-instrumental performing artist is a real “wow” musician. Bower's creativity and talent won him induction into Frets Magazine's First Gallery of the Greats after five years of winning the stringed instrument, open category of the magazine’s readers' poll. This distinction put Bowers alongside other luminaries, such as Chet Atkins, David Grisman, Stephan Grappelli, Itzhak Perlman, Tony Rice, Rob Wasserman and Mark O'Connor, recognized for their personal accomplishments. In 1993, Bryan was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame to stand only with Maybelle Carter, Kilby Snow, and Sara Carter. More at www.bryanbowers.com
