Egads! NINE festivals in Southern California, plus more elsewhere, and that’s just THIS weekend! There are sooo many ways to celebrate the solstice, the official arrival of summer. Just being able to enjoy live music and, well, being alive, for starters. But that works better with places to go and celebrate. And there are soooo many of those, it would be incomprehensible without your trusty Guide. We’ve got the map, the compass, and the crumpled hat. The steeds are saddled-up. So hop aboard and let’s GO.
Oh, one quick thing: in addition to all the very many “here-and-now” events this weekend, we do have updated TICKET ALERTS for you here, too.

Perhaps our favorite quote about Live Oak comes from a musician who has played there and who asked us not to reveal his name. He says, “People should realize this isn’t all folk music. It’s all highly proficient, highly creative and a joy to hear, and it’s really very eclectic, just like what the station plays on the air. Ha! It’s what somebody needs to tell KCRW is GOOD eclectic music, since L.A. radio listeners have no clue except for all the music lovers who come up here every year for this happy festival!”

Finally, the calendars work, and there is no conflict with the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” which was the weekend before this.

Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold that festival to the Ontario Convention & Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the economic benefits it brought to the community). Hence, we have this new bluegrass festival, held a week after “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Take UV-blocking sunglasseses, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, your low back folding chair, a blanket, and warm duds for chilly evenings.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first performance at 3 pm, and conclude about 3 pm Sunday so you’ll have plenty of time to drive home. (Note that Amtrak is an option from L.A. Union Station or Fullerton to Victorville, but it’s the Chicago train, once per day, each way.)

Sun, Jun 21,
FESTIVAL,
in L.A.:
Annual “MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES” 2015 happens all over the L.A. Basin, in formal and informal venues, indoors and out. The event’s website is a somewhat frustrating experience, professing to list all the performers or spaces by genre, but then omitting most of them from its categorical listings. We attempt to improve on that for you, here.
+
Deriving from the original French “Fete de la Musique,” June 21 is recognized as International “Make Music Day” and is celebrated by some 800 cities in 110 countries all over the world. In Los Angeles, dozens of neighborhood venues will showcase local musical artists as part a city-wide celebration of sound called Make Music LA.
+
Annual "MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES" is a FREE event inspired by the French "Fete de la Musique" (and the success of the annual "Make Music Pasadena," which happened last weekend). This year, 172 acts, across all genres of music, are performing live in dozens of venues spanning the map from Santa Monica to Pasadena.
+
But that's not the whole story, or even its essence. In France, the whole idea is for musicians of all levels to get out and "make music" on the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, because it's the ONE day each year when busking is not illegal in France.
+
Thus, "Make Music L.A." features "Mass Appeal" events for players of specific instruments to join-in, ranging from ukulele to harmonica to saxophone.
+
Their website has times and locations for SOME artists and SOME performances, with descriptions of some of those artists — but if you click, "Folk," you'll get only some of them. (There are many more than the nine who show-up on the folk tab.) So stick with us, here, to straighten it out for you.
+
There are categories for FOLK, AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS, ROOTS, and SINGER-SONGWRITER playing MMLA — but too many of the artists and bands in those categories are not integrated into the event’s websites to show when and where they are playing.
+
Their two websites do have info; some of it connects to band and artist bios, some connects venues to schedules, and some of it just does not. The two sites are
www.makemusicla.org
and
www.makemusicday.org
+
You’ll have more success by using our list to find a band you want to hear, then googling tham to see where they’re playing. The sites list 172 acts but do not integrate more than half of them into the database.

Festival elsewhere…
Thu-Sun, Jun 18-21,
FESTIVAL, in Colorado:
42nd annual "TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" has a main stage like no other: the view to the left of the stage is a six-hundred foot waterfall.
+
The annual festival coincides with the Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year which begins the Colorado summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, guitars, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."
+
This event coined the term, "Festivarians" to describe the attendees — most of them devotees — who make the annual solstice trek to Telluride for the superb music and all that goes with it. And it has its own culture.
+
They'll tell you, "The 42nd Annual festival promises a magical four days of only-in-Telluride performances," and they are not exaggerating.
+
Foremost among those is the always-anticipated opening-night Thursday set by the Telluride House Band. That being the annual session by Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Bowers, & Stuart Duncan. Wowwww.
+
And there ARE still some single-day Thursday tickets.
+
This is the music fest that rightfully boasts bringing "Beloved Festival veterans and inspiring new talent. The Telluride royalty of virtuosic bluegrass superpickers, soulful songwriters, and some of the biggest stars in the rootsy Americana landscape and well beyond."
+
The festival is built around the many artists that have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound, as the weekend is sprinkled with inspired sets from Peter Rowan, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Tim O'Brien, and of course the "King of Telluride," Sam Bush. These artists come together for the festival's epic set from the Telluride House Band.
+
Nestled in the rugged San Juan Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the natural architecture of the Telluride Box Canyon, Telluride is arguably the most spectacular town in the American West.
+
Founded in 1875, the Victorian charm of the town is protected as a National Historic Landmark District. The town of Telluride (elevation 8,750') is connected to the modern resort community of Mountain Village (elevation 9,450') via a free commuter gondola.
+
The San Juan Mountains are the highest concentration of 14,000-foot peaks in the US. Activities in and around Telluride include mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, numerous hot springs, historic ghost towns, and whatever else your sense of adventure shows you. Popular hikes from town are the Bridal Veil Falls - the highest cascade in Colorado - and the 2-mile hike up to Bear Creek Falls, beginning right behind the festival stage.
+
The 2015 Main Stage Schedule will convince you to put this festival on your list for next year, whether or not you're going to experience it now.

The enchanting and effervescent chanteuse Janet Klein with her four-member band, The Parlor Boys, entertains in a lively Speakeasy Jazz Revue style. This dapper, multi-talented troupe delivers scintillating early hot jazz tunes from the 1920’s and 30’s with authenticity and verve. Janet has recently been doing voice-overs for cartoons (“Adventure Time” & “Over the Garden Wall”) and has a hit song on YouTube from her most recent characterization as the lovelorn school teacher (Miss Langtree) for forest animals in the exquisitely beautiful cartoon called “Over The Garden Wall.” Her song “Langtree’s Lament” can be seen and heard at

+
The band features a dapper all-star line-up: John Reynolds – panache whistling, banjo and guitar, Corey Gemme – cornet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet & percussion, Randy Woltz –Vibraphone & bells, and Marquis Howell – Charm & Stand Up Bass.
+
Today Janet is the most refreshing anachronism to materialize from the ether of the era of Prohibition. Klein is a channel to a definitive time in American music when bob hairdos were the rage and batting-eyes meant you had a live one on your hands. Thing is,LA-based Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys are not nostalgic shtick. She doesn’t merely perform songs from “lost America”—obscure numbers circa 1900s-1930s such as barrelhouse jazz, foxtrots, chansonettes, Tin Pan Alley, ragtime ditties and vaudeville from the Great Depression—she actually lives them, and transports her audiences along the way. Janet considers herself an “archeologist” for digging up buried treasures by the likes of Wilton Crawley and A.P. Randolf, Robert Cloud, Ruth Etting, Lil Armstrong, Mae West, Annette Hanshaw, Fannie Brice, Josephine Baker and so forth.

Established in 2012, and currently based in East Nashville, TN, they record and perform a varied and unique style of folky, garage-infused rhythm & blues. Using primal foot percussion, complex, fuzzed-out, finger-picked guitar patterns, warbled harmonicas, tasty harmonies, and A LOT of tambourine, they are able to create something rugged and visceral - a modern interpretation of early blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll music that hearkens back to the traditions of hazy front porch folk songs and raucous back-alley juke joints. McCabe’s own MATT BRADFORD, who plays the hell out of the dobro, will open the show.

“Einstein!” is a true story based on the recent release of 15,000 documents and years of research that bring to light new information about a young pre-crazy haired Einstein's life in Berlin around 1914. It chronicles his epic and inspirational fight for relativity and for the affections for his son, Hans Albert. It's a historical drama with comedy that tells the incredible, true story that ushered in our present Modern Technological Age. Told through humor and heart, Jack Fry breathes life into one of the most intriguing icons of all time.
+
Description: Albert Einstein comes back from the beyond. Upset with the way his image has been cheapened and corrupted, he tells us the real harrowing story behind relativity and his struggles as a father. It's 1914 Berlin, war is breaking out all over Europe, and a 35 year old Einstein is in the battle of his life as he is in the midst of colleagues trying to steal his new theory, an ugly divorce, anti-Semitism, failing health that threatens his life, isolated for being a pacifist, huge scientific backlash, and trying to keep the relationship with his son Hans Albert from slipping away from him forever.

Sun, Jun 21, in Griffith Park (L.A.):
8 pm “GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY SUMMER SOLSTICE EVENTS” are the local equivalent of being at Stonehenge or a Mayan pyramid where things uniquely align one day a year on the summer solstice. On Sunday, several things happen. First, for the Sun’s “local noon” appearance at its highest position in the sky all year, the Sun’s projected image crosses the engraved meridian arc of the Gottlieb Transit Corridor on the west side of the Griffith Observatory. Later, the northernmost sunset and the end of the longest day of the year align with an engraved marker and stone line laid into pavement on the terrace. The solstice sunset occurs at 8:07 pm. Expect it to get crowed on this special day.
