FROM SANTA MONICA TO CHAPEL HILL: THOUSANDS OF RECORDINGS OF LIVE PERFORMANCES BY FOLK MUSIC GREATS AT McCABE’S ARE PRESERVED IN N.C.
By Charlie Shelton (republished by permission)
McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA has seen more than 1,600 musicians perform in the store. Those live performances have produced thousands of recordings documenting the livelihood of folk music for the past 45 years.
Those recordings have now come to North Carolina. Bob Riskin, store owner, recently donated the collection to the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill.
“It was important that these taped recordings, which are old and fragile and have significant scholarly value, go to a place where they would be carefully conditioned and conserved,” Riskin said in a statement. “We did an inventory and cataloged more than 2,000 tapes. When I began to think of who should receive the gift, several knowledgeable people I respect, including my sound engineers, all said the best choice would be the University of North Carolina.”
Steven Weiss, curator of SFC, said Chapel Hill is a good home for the collection. SFC already houses hundreds of recordings of folk and roots music, but Weiss said McCabe’s collection is one of a kind.
“This collection is a national treasure that documents nearly five decades of top performers in an intimate setting,” Weiss said.
Weiss said people will be able to listen to portions of the recordings starting in September of 2016.
Riskin donated the collection of audiocassettes and open reel tapes to the SFC so it can preserve it by creating digital copies of the recordings.
The recorded performances include those by:
RAMBLIN’ JACK ELLIOT
JOHN FAHEY
JOHN HAMMOND
BILL MONROE
ODETTA
JEAN RITCHIE
DAVE VAN RONK
MIKE SEEGER
RALPH STANLEY
MERLE TRAVIS
KATE WOLF
TOWNES VAN ZANDT
DOC WATSON
It also includes live performances by Carrboro's ELIZABETH "LIBBA" COTTEN. Check out an excerpt of Cotten playing "Going Away" at McCabe’s in 1978 below.
NOTE: Cotten says she is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina when she introduces herself. Our guess is that Chapel Hill may have been a little more familiar to her audiences.
You can find recordings like these and more great collections exploring the Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill.

• Our second news feature story today...
MICHELE SHOCKED BRINGS MUSIC TO THE RIVER – THE L.A. RIVER(!) SATURDAY
It's a venue along the Elysian Valley L.A. River Bike Path, and the masterful songwriter and always-full-of-surprises MICHELLE SHOCKED, plus OLLIN, are coming there to perform FREE for you. It’s called the Frog Spot - Friends of the L.A. River, at 2825 Benedict St, L.A. 90039. The music starts at 7 pm, Saturday, June 27.
The new venue is one of several that have come pretty much from nowhere along what has always been an embarrassing concrete ditch, but which is about to be transformed. The Frog Spot is open every weekend, Saturdays 8 am-8 pm, Sundays 8 am-6 pm. It’s all ages, and they have beer & wine specials.
Michelle tells us, "I’ll return for a command performance at The Frog Spot [this Saturday] and another on July 18th. I’m honored to share the stage with my new favorite East Los band, OLLIN [at 8 pm], and also rawkus bike punx PEDAL STRIKE [performing at 6 pm]."
She continues, "The Frog Spot is a pop-up project of FoLAR. The Friends of the L.A. River is a cultural institution in Los Angeles... [It] began with a visionary poet named Lewis MacAdams asking the river if he could speak for it and the river told him yes. The dream that began almost 40 years ago will come true next month when the Army Corps of Engineers undertakes to remove broad stretches of concrete that have entombed the river. An expansive bridge will be rebuilt at Sixth Street resembling a ribbon, and a bike path and green beltway will connect Angelenos to the natural beauty of the Arroyo, which Woody Guthrie describes in 'The Flood of 1934'."
She adds, "Please feel welcome to join in the daily weekday conversation or drop by if you’re in the neighborhood. Mondays at Church & State, Tuesdays at Urban Radish, Wednesdays at Daily Dose Cafe and Thursdays at The Springs. I’m on Meerkat every weekday at 3 pm for the summer, hosting a livestream. It isn’t a big production number, just a daily chat for 15-20 minutes — sometimes I sing a song, sometimes I read poems or excerpts from my unpublished manuscript, 'Bootleg This,' and yes, on occasion I opine. You can download the Meerkat app on your phone or follow via Twitter at @mshockedrox. Facebook isn’t much longer for this world, I expect, they’ve changed their rules once too often, but in the meantime, there’s a video snippet I’ve posted there."
Of course, Michelle Shocked is kinetic energy. She says, "Details are still coming in on my September tour, but it looks like it will start in France, then Portugal, Spain and swing into Italy. I’ll post the dates on my website as soon as they’re confirmed. Last but not least, I’m giddy with excitement to start rehearsals in the fall for the production of #HOPSCOTCH that will premiere with L.A.'s new opera company, The Industry. I’ve composed some music and will also be singing in a scene. How glamorous is that?! The artistic director, Yuval Sharon, is a creative mastermind, so audacious in his vision for opera and Los Angeles that the whole city, me included, is in love with him."
She's also an enthusiastic Bernie Sanders supporter. And ever the exciting performer.
