First News Feature…
• Farewell to TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT: Saturday is last tango for L.A.’s key Old Time band
We’ll let renowned contra dance, square dance, and old time dance caller Susan Michaels tell you about it, just as we learned it from her.
Hello Friends of The Foot:
This is Susan Michaels writing here … your friendly neighborhood caller. By now I am sure you’ve heard that our beloved Triple Chicken Foot is moving along to new towns and new projects and will be no more. For me, this is sad, sad news. Triple Chicken Foot changed my life in profound ways. They took my hand and said hey come along with us and we’ll start a revolution… a Squarevolution. With Kelly and Ben and Mike I’ve spent almost a decade calling square dances in the unlikeliest places – in a parking garage, art gallery, traffic island, under the Spring St. Bridge, in a corn field that was not a cornfield, at bars and restaurants and parks and playgrounds … and over the years we created dance magic for thousands of people who didn’t know how much joy there is in the simple act of holding hands in a circle until we showed up. Yeah sure, when I met Triple Chicken Foot I had already been calling dances for almost 20 years, but they were the ones who helped me find my “calling.” I am sure you’re not surprised to know there are tears in my eyes as I write this…
So here’s the deal. Our last dance and jam is this Saturday, June 13 from 6-9pm. We’re playing for the opening of a new community center in Rowland Heights with a dance from 6-7:30 and a jam and opening dancing from 7:30 -9. It is a FREE event.
I know… it’s a weird time on a Saturday in an inconvenient location … but I hope some of you will come out for even just a little while to help us go out with a bang. If we have a few friends there to make music with us and hold hands in a circle it will make the parting a little more sweet. Please, come help us close an important chapter in the story of L.A. Old Time and then start a new one…
– Susan

__________
Here at the Guide, our admiration for Triple Chicken Foot – always “The Foot” to their fans – goes back to the days when they first got together, and we were on the radio on Los Angeles, and we begged them to record something so we could play it on-air. After that came much acclaim for the band, including their ten years of producing the “LOS ANGELES OLD TIME SOCIAL,” the annual three-day lead-in to the long-running TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL. Topanga has even set aside stage time each year for “The Best of the Old Time Social,” which always concluded the night before the big TBFC Sunday. No word on the future of the Old Time Social, or any more on which ways the band members will go when they depart. But if you can get there Saturday night, go out and enjoy one last session of raucously fun old time string band music from these masters.

Second News feature...
• THE FIRST DOCUMENT IN HUMAN HISTORY GUARANTEEING HUMAN RIGHTS: Monday marks 800 years since the Magna Carta was extracted from the king of England
It’s the grandfather of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the United Nations Declaration of Human Freedoms. Ross Altman, honored a few years back with the TBFC “Music Legend Award,” has both the academic and musical credentials to make that meaningful for everyone, and he does that in a pair of thematic performances on Saturday.
Ross writes, in his recent feature story for FolkWorks, "Runnymede, England, June 15, 1215. 800 years ago, King John’s Barons forced him to sign the founding document of English liberty — 'The Great Charter,' 'The Magna Carta.'
"Written in Latin, it was the first organized effort to drive a wedge between Noblemen and the King, guaranteeing to British Nobility rights which had formerly been allocated only to the King. That was the beginning of such rights eventually making their way down to the bottom rung of the social order and permeating a democratic society.
"That document now resides in the Bodleian Library of the British Museum; I have a framed replica which I found a number of years ago at an Out-of-the-Closet thrift shop. Outside of my Gibson J-200 guitar it is my most treasured possession—a daily reminder of the human rights that became the animating principle of the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights."
Read the rest of Ross Altman's piece on the Magna Carta's birthday at:
http://folkworks.org/columns/how-can-i-keep-from-talking-ross-altman/45671-the-magna-carta-turns-800
And catch his performances Saturday afternoon at 2 pm at the Allendale Branch Library, 1130 S Marengo, Pasadena 91106, or Saturday night at 7 pm at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center, 681 Venice Bl, Venice 90291; 310-822-3006.

Including a BIG section on all the festivals happening the weekend (Fri-Sun) of JUNE 19-21. The opportunity is ’uge. Abundantly, ridiculously ’uge.
Psst. Hey, kid. Yeah, YOU! The weekend of Friday through Sunday, June 19-21, is CRAAAA-ZEEE with first-rate festivals. Maybe one each day, for those who can afford the tickets? It’ll make for a memorable start to your summer! (If you’re travel-challenged, two festivals are in Long Beach!)

FESTIVAL,
inland N of Santa Barbara:
Annual “LIVE OAK MUSIC FESTIVAL” is a delightful event in a picturesque setting and supports folk-friendly public radio on the Central Coast, with performances by GLEN DAVID ANDREWS, LIL’ED & THE BLUES IMPERIALS, JUNGLE FIRE, RIYZZ QAWWALI, NIKKI HILL, MAMAJOWALI, CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS, NIKKI HILL, DEREK SENN, EMY REYNOLDS BAND, and more, at Live Oak Camp, 4600 Highway 154, Santa Barbara 93105.
+
Finally, the schedules work! There is no conflict with the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” which is the weekend before this.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first main stage performance at 2 pm, and go right through Sunday evening at 8:30 pm (on Fri & Sat, shows run late) with reliably good sound, workshops, good food, interesting vendors, lots of hippie heaven dancing under the giant oak trees, jamming in the campgrounds, and more. Take your low back folding chair, blankets, and warm duds for chilly evenings.
+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+
Fri-Sun, Jun 19-21,
FESTIVAL,
In the San Bernardino Co desert (Victorville):
Annual “ROUTE 66 BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL” brings performances by ERIC UGLUM & BUD BIERHAUS & THE VINTAGE MARTINS, SILVERADO BLUEGRASS BAND, THE GET DOWN BOYS, GRASSLANDS, BURNING HEART, MOJAVISOUL, THIS JUST IN, WINDY RIDGE, BACK PORCH BLUEGRASS, SWEET TIDINGS, SWBA BLUEGRASS KIDS, and more, at the San Bernadino County Fairgrounds, 14800 7th St, Victorville 92395; info, 760-218-8752 or email route66bluegrass@gmail.com
+
Since Don Tucker, the founder of the “Huck Finn Jubilee,” died suddenly three years ago, the family sold the festival to the Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau (it was held the weekend of June 13-15). Before that, it had been a longtime annual event at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Obviously, Victorville misses its annual bluegrass fix (and the business it brought). Hence, this new bluegrass festival, held a week ahead of “Huck Finn,” so hardcore pickers ‘n grinners can now catch TWO Southern Cal bluegrass fests on consecutive weekends. Take your low back folding chair, blankets, and warm duds for chilly evenings.
+
Things get underway Friday with the first performance at 3 pm, and conclude about 3 pm Sunday so you’ll have plenty of time to drive home. (Note that Amtrak is an option from L.A. Union Station or Fullerton to Victorville, but it’s the Chicago train, once per day, each way.)

Susie and her band are celebrating the release of their new CD, but the death of Jean Ritchie on June 1 has made this much more. Ritchie, a few years back, gave her endorsement to Southern Cal-based, Kentucky-born musician SUSIE GLAZE. The Pasadena Folk Music Society already had this concert booked with Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band for June 13, and we can expect some of Ritchie’s songs in tribute.

Susie Glaze sang for Ms. Ritchie at a CD release concert in May, 2014 in Berea, Kentucky. Also on the bill were Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon. “Many fans have told me, that on the Jean Ritchie songs, they can’t tell if it is me or Jean singing,” says Glaze, “Jean herself has told me the same thing.”

If it were it easy, every fingerstyle guitarist would play as well as Pat Donohue. A Midwesterner with the rhythm of a drummer and the soul of a New Orleans saxophonist, Donohue has the fingers of the world's finest guitarists. He brings his talent weekly to the radio stage of A Prairie Home Companion, where he started regularly playing in its band in 1993. You'll also catch him on concert stages nationwide and in the lesson room, where he teaches guitar playing. Though he was named National Finger Picking Guitar Champion in 1983, perhaps the greatest testament to the virtuosity of Donohue's guitar playing is the kudos he receives from fellow musicians. Guitar great Leo Kottke calls Donohue's playing "haunting." And Chet Atkins jokes on Donohue's latest album, "Backroads," that perhaps it's time for him to steal from Pat. "One time I was on the air, I was playing with Chet and suddenly he just told everybody that he thought I was one of the best fingerpickers in the world," Donohue said. "It's hard to get past that."
+
His skill, wit, and warm, infectious personality earned him accolades, and his songs have been recorded by such performers as Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, and many others. Donohue himself has released several albums, including Backroads, which includes guest appearances by Chet Atkins, Kate MacKenzie, Howard Levy, and Butch Thompson. His travels with A Prairie Home Companion and extensive solo engagements allow him to conduct workshops and clinics throughout the U.S.

Bob Stane Says: I was listening to Garrison Keilor on "Prairie Home Companion" when I heard PAT DONOHUE sing and play, with "The Shoe Band," a song called "Frisco Bound." I almost drove off the road. I had to pull over to the shoulder and recompose myself. When I got home I looked him up with the help of YAHOO and sent him an e mail. I asked about "Frisco Bound" and offered, in my usual shameless way a gig at The Coffee Gallery Backstage whenever he came to Los Angeles. He sent me a wonderful promo pak and phoned about a week later and accepted my impertinent offer. Be sure to go to his Web Site (below) and check it out. Great accomplishments and ongoing goodies.
