♪ An outstanding new documentary on TV. Set your recording device before you head-out for the live music scene...
On tv this weekend:
"BY THE RIVER OF BABYLON: AN ELEGY FOR SOUTH LOUISIANA" is a 2015 documentary shown on the PBS series "AMERICA REFRAMED," and it tells the story of the homogenization of bayou culture through the demise of fading South Louisiana dance halls. The region, home to Cajun and Creole music, food, and culture, is undergoing seismic changes due to environmental changes, not limited to out-migration following Katrina and the BP oil volcano that destroyed fisheries.
+
It's filled with wonderful Cajun and zydeco music that informs visual images and gives you a taste of the delights of a rich culture being exterminated by oil, chemicals, the destructive pressure of environmental collapse driven by outside greed, federal regulators' complacency in all of that, and the increasingly tough struggles for the just-barely-drylands, the unique freshwater-marsh wetlands, and the culture to survive.
+
Some telling quotes from the show: "It took 9,000 years for nature to make the bayous. It took people 70 years to destroy it." And this: "Imagine losing an area of land the size of a football field. Now imagine losing that, every hour, for seventy years." [As oil extraction and pipelines proliferated] the canals were dredged and the land sank, ultimately the settlements went underwater and there was nothing to protect from hurricanes and ordinary storm surges." And finally, this: "Soon there may be nothing left here but open water."
+
Highly recommended. The context of the music — Beau Jocques, Clifton Chenier, many others, and time in-studio with the region's top deejays doing lively radio interviews — becomes powerful and poignant. Beau Jocques' death to a sudden heart attack, after overcoming a partially paralyzing accident to become the music's biggest star, becomes a metaphor for much more. The documentary is filled with stories, images, great fiddle and accordion, "rub board" percussion vests, marvelous vocals, and an opportunity to understand what has produced so much iconic music.

FESTIVAL,
on Mt. Baldy:
4th Annual "BIGHORN MUSIC FESTIVAL" with 25 bands on 3 stages is the best local festival in terms of both a wild alpine experience and superbly talented young Folk-Americana / Nu-Folk bands and artists. It’s high atop the San Gabriel Mountains in Baldy Notch, at the top of the Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts. (Address for parking at the bottom of the lifts is 8401 Mt Baldy Rd, Mt Baldy 91759). Phone is 909-982-0800.
+
Fans of trad and alt country, bluegrass, blues, Americana, and nearly every other form of American roots music will love this mountain-top musical event. You start with a 20-minute scenic ride up the canyon on a chair lift; it’s not every festival where the fun begins en-route.
+
Once up there, this is a music festival with all the amenities you expect, and it’s at an elevation of nearly 8,000 ft. above sea level, high atop the ridge that leads up to 10,064-ft. Mt. Baldy. The Guide has attended two of the first three annual editions of the “Big Horn Music Festival,” including the inaugural festival, and we rate it highly. Patrons of the 4th annual event will get music on three stages over the course of the weekend.
+
There are 25 acts in the lineup, the majority of them young Nu-Folk / Folk-Americana acts, with some truly accomplished artists, as well. Artists include PRESTON SMITH, BECKY KESSLER, TAWNY ELLIS, NIGEL WALSH, OTHER WORDS, JESSE CROSS, LEVI DEAN & THE AMERICATS, BLIND HORSE CANYON, and THE BATTLEFIELD.
+
Let’s take just a couple of the acts. THE BATTLEFIELD is an Americana band formed in 2013 by singer-songwriters Ducey of Sherman Oaks, Jenny Weaver of West Hollywood, and James Addison of Los Feliz. Their sound reaches across the spectrum of the genre the world has come to call Americana, including country and folk and bluegrass, and it also draws from rock and gospel.

Then there’s PRESTON SMITH, an elite and well-traveled musician with some uniquely legendary gigs to his credit, including being THE musician chosen as performing bandleader to play BARBARA STREISAND’s wedding.

Sat, Aug 22, in Topanga:
3:30 pm “AS YOU LIKE IT” resets Shakespeare to the American Civil War, at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley.
+
Note, “the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more.”
+
In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

SOZ is known for passionate lead vocals backed by strong harmony background vocals. SOUTH OF ZIGGY is JAMES RUSSELL on lead vocal, acoustic guitar & piano; DALE LA DUKE on keyboards, accordion & vocals; GREG KRUEGER on guitar & mandolin; FRANK SPANO on bass & vocals; BRIAN ALAN PATTERSON on pedal steel; JASON SILER on drums. DALE LADUKE & FRIENDS. Leader DALE LADUKE was born in Grosse Pointe Michigan where he began singing in church choirs when he was 8 years old and went on to be principle solist and president of his high school choir, trumpet player in the high school band, and in college, to sing with the Michigan State Honors Choir and the Michigan State Fair Choir. He was a founder of the popular Southern California country band FIVE WHEEL DRIVE that was one of five finalists (and the only country band) in Yahoo's "Best Unsigned Band" contest in 2000 and the only group to have their songs in 6 of the top 10 slots in the “Country” division of MP3.com that same year. Dale was flown to the red carpet awards show at Studio 54 in Manhattan that featured performances by David Bowie, Issac Hayes, Allanis Morriset and many others. LaDuke was also a founding member of the Americana / Celtic group KAEDMON, whose CD, "My Love," was a 2009 "top pick" by Music Conection Magazine. As a solo artist, he was a finalist at the 2010 Hollywood Music in Media Awards, 2009 Independent Singer-Songwriter Awards, 2008 Los Angeles Music Awards and 4th place winner 2006 Unisong Song Contest. +
Kevin Burton Smith, “Butler’s Coffee Music Guy,” says, “Paul, of PAUL INMAN'S DELIVERY, may talk about noir-tinged Glamicana, but his influences cover a whole lot more of the waterfront than that. Listen closely as he sings and accompanies himself on keys, harmonica and guitar, & you can hear traces of everything from Van Morrison, Nick Cave & Bob Dylan to Doo-wop, Lou Reed, Kerouac and Edgar Allan Poe. It's smart and unapologetically literate songwriting swirling with passion and poetry; an evocative and stirring mix of Celtic mojo and Rimbaud a-Go-Go -- you don't got to fear it, you just got to hear it; a journey to the musical Heart of Darkness, but don't worry – Paul will light a candle. And rock your Gypsy soul.”
+
Plus...
THE KEEFTOWNE BLEND.
Oh, boy. This is an odd intro. Kevin Burton Smith says, “And speaking of lighting up… Then it'll be time for those reality-challenged musicologists known collectively as THE KEEFTOWNE BLEND. Much has been written about these high-flying hep cats (some of it even true), but hearing is believing. Or something. Rumors are that Bill, John, and Stacey are the result of a series of unsanctioned and top secret genetic and biological experiments conducted sometime during the Nixon administration that involved improperly labelled genetic samples, copious quantities of organic substances, lots of of movies on the late show, and a big box of scratchy old vinyl records found in a cardboard box in the back room of a Lancaster Blvd. head shop owned by some dude called Rex back in the day.”
+
Kevin adds, “But whatever... The result is an affable, half-baked train wreck of influences that includes the Sons of the Pioneers, Cheech & Chong, the Monkees, Stonewall Jackson, Pink Floyd, Cab Calloway and early Willie -- and that's before they start gettin' really rolling...”

√ A “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick...

Sat, Aug 22, in Pasadena:
8 pm “THE PASADENA FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY” presents a fine double-bill with MARINA V & NICK BAKER, plus AIREENE ESPIRITU with ED TREE, in Beckman Auditorium (aka “Little Beckman”), 400 S Wilson, Pasadena 91106; 626-395-4652.
+
MARINA V is an outstanding keyboard player, originally trained as a classical pianist in her native Russia, back in the final years of the Soviet Union. If we're lucky, she may explain how a KGB agent once helped her with her music homework. While in Russia, she began to hear western music in the form of smuggled cassette tapes from the 1960s. She came to the U.S. at age 15, and fell in love with the music that she heard while attending college in Illinois. She emigrated to the U.S. for the purpose of becoming a musician and songwriter. Her songs still include the classical influences of her youth, and she also performs traditional Russian songs, bending those influences with the styles she loved from American and British music. She once described herself this way: “If the Beatles and Tori Amos had a child raised in Russia by Tchaikovsky, that would be me." Marina is not only intriguing musically, she's also very, very talented. GRAHAM NASH loaned her his personal studio, and one of his guitars for one of her recording projects. She has translated a Neil Diamond song into Russian so well that it sounds like it started out that way. When her fans challenged her to do more of her unusual cover tunes, she came up with some amazing results, creating her own distinctive versions of songs ranging from Bob Marley to Willy Nelson. Her husband, NICK BAKER, started out as a rock drummer and guitarist, and now the pair have played hundreds of shows around the world together, featuring Nick on guitar.
+
Plus...
AIREENE ESPIRITU can play the most amazing range of music on the ukulele, and have it come out mesmerizing. Her own compositions, including a "revisionist history" version of the traditional blues number “Stagolee” have earned her a following up and down the Pacific coast. She also plays guitar when the music demands it. She shares with Marina V an international origin. Born in the Philippines, she moved to the U.S. at the age of 10 and was immersed in a blend of American traditional and roots music, combined with the musical heritage of her own family. These all influenced her music, ranging from the Lomax field recordings to her uncle’s finger-picking songs on guitar. As a result, she may blend world music rhythms into a love song or a blues song influenced by gospel, or any other unusual combination that just sounds good. She describes her music as "stompin', swayin' Americana." On her website, you can listen to her sing her composition, “Down at the Old Folks Home,” accompanied by ED TREE, as will be the case at this show.

+
Kim was a blind musician. She was a regular caller when the “Tied to the Tracks” radio show was on the air in Los Angeles, hosted by the Guide’s editor. Kim always had the ear of a musicologist and had requests, suggestions for crafting songs into sets, comments on the instrumentation of the particular recordings the show’s programmer-host chose, and plenty more. She never seemed demanding, but rather was always interested in the music and the artists and the performance – as well as the most effective way to communicate the appeal and the message of the music to others. We used to look forward to her calls.

2:30 pm “ALWAYS… PATSY CLINE” is a big time music-filled show at the charming little Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W Sierra Madre Bl, Sierra Madre; 626-355-4318; www.sierramadreplayhouse.com
+
This is the fastest ticket-seller in the Playhouse’s history. To accommodate the extraordinary demand, additional matinee performances have been added. Don’t dawdle getting tickets to this one. (The Guide” News Feature that announced the production’s opening night is re-run here.)
+
It’s a real, live stage MUSICAL, a theatrical production focusing on the vocal magic of PATSY CLINE, you’ll experience how she evoked the heartbreak and longing that have made her songs country and pop classics. Written by Ted Swindley, directed by Robert Marra, with musical director Sean Paxton, it’s a Sierra Madre Playhouse production starring CORI CABLE KIDDER and NIKKI D’AMICO.
+
“Always….Patsy Cline” depicts the legendary singer backed by a live band performing twenty-seven of her greatest hits in this jukebox musical. Patsy Cline (1932-1963) was one of the most popular and influential vocalists of the 20th Century.
+
Although most associated with country music, she was the first female crossover artist, also singing traditional pop, torch songs, rockabilly, honky-tonk, country swing, and gospel. The first female solo artist admitted to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Patsy was also included among “The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll” by VH1, “The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time” by Rolling Stone, and “The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music” by CMT.
+
She first appeared on radio in Winchester, VA in 1947. In 1954, country star Jimmy Dean brought her aboard as a regular on the radio show “Town and Country Jamboree” in Arlington, VA. In 1955, she began appearing on television, on the TV version of “Grand Ole Opry” and on “Ozark Jubilee.”
+
But it was her sensational success on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” in 1957 that truly launched her as a national figure. Godfrey’s show, a precursor of competitions like “Star Search” and “American Idol,” also launched Ann-Margret and Pat Boone, among others.
+
“Always…Patsy Cline” is based on a real incident that occurred in 1961. Super-fan Louise Seger befriends Cline before a concert in Houston. After the show, Louise takes her home, cooks her breakfast and appears with her on a local radio broadcast. The two maintain a correspondence, writing each other letters until Cline’s untimely death in a Tennessee plane crash in 1963. The star closed each of her letters to Seger, “Always…Patsy Cline.”
+
CORI CABLE KIDDER portrays PATSY CLINE. A graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, she toured with IN THE MOOD and sang at Tokyo Disney for a year. Coming to L.A., she appeared in+ “The Producers” and with SWING DAMES, performing the music of the Andrews Sisters.
+
NIKKI D’AMICO plays Louise. Her extensive musical theater credits include National Tours of “Evita,” “Cats,” “A Chorus Line,” “The Fantasticks,” “Chaplin,” “West Side Story,” and more. Most recently, she appeared with Pacific Resident Theatre in its Ovation-nominated production of “A View from the Bridge.”
+
ROBERT MARRA directs. In addition to numerous New York credits, his local shows include “The World Goes Round,” “Once on this Island,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “Into the Woods,” “Chess in Concert,” “The Devil and Daisy Jane,” “A Chorus Line,” and many more. He is also a choreographer.
+
TED SWINDLEY is the playwright. He was the Founding Artistic Director of Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston. He also wrote “Stories My Grandmother Told Me.” Fans of Patsy Cline’s music will be in musical heaven as they’ll hear, performed live, twenty-seven of her greatest hits, including “Walkin’ After Midnight” (the Godfrey show hit), “Sweet Dreams” (a signature tune for Cline, although originally a hit ten years earlier by Faron Young), “Crazy” (written for her by WILLIE NELSON), “I Fall to Pieces,” “She’s Got You,” “Your Cheating Heart,” and many more.
+
“Always…Patsy Cline” debuted in 1988. It is one of only two stage productions about the singer licensed and authorized by The Estate of Patsy Cline. In addition to affording a revue of great songs, “Always…Patsy Cline” is a heartwarming story of an enduring friendship.

There is nothing like the sound of guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and doghouse bass when they get into that special Bluegrass groove. Add to that high-powered vocals and soaring harmonies and you have Burning Heart Bluegrass.
With nearly 100 years of musical experience between them, the members of Burning Heart Bluegrass provide these essentials with all the energy, drive, passion, and precision that prompted Ralph Rinzler to call Bluegrass music "folk music on overdrive." Drawing it's repertoire from old and new Bluegrass classics, BHB provides a genuine Bluegrass experience.
The members of Burning Heart Bluegrass are:
Jeff Fleck was originally drawn to Bluegrass because it reminded him of the folk music he used to play way back when; he stuck with it because he loves the energy and precision that Bill Monroe brought to the traditional forms of mountain music. Dan Sankey is an accomplished banjo, mandolin, fiddle and guitar player and has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Born in Louisiana, Keith Chagnon By the time he was In his teens he was entering and winning banjo contests. Keith has played in numerous Bluegrass bands in Ohio and Kentucky, and, since the mid 80s, in California. Steve Rosenstein entered the music scene when he joined Sweet Smoke, the psychedelic jazz-rock band based in Germany on the Dutch border. Returning to the USA, he performed Irish music in Boston, and, after a move to California, in Santa Cruz. Since moving to Los Angeles in Steve has performed with many musicians in the country/Bluegrass scene, including Richard Greene, Nicky Hopkins, Pete Anderson, and Herb Pederson. Born and raised in rural Oregon along the Columbia River, Ron Vance didn't discover Bluegrass until he settled in Santa Monica. “Sunday brings another double bill - this time with celebrated country singer-songwriter KATY MOFFATT, and acclaimed finger style guitarist MARY FLOWER, who reunite after 40 years of solo successes. In 1973, then-Denver-based acoustic duo Mary Flower and Katy Moffatt toured across the U.S. on the legendary College Coffeehouse Circuit. At home they were known as "the reigning queens of Colorado folk." Mary's astonishing instrumental and composing expertise leaned into blues and old-time music. Katy's singer/songwriter artistry emerged from Texas folk-blues and country-rock. After 40 years of solo successes, Katy and Mary will share a stage again for the first time since those formative days, in a co-billed performance encompassing their unique artistic paths and the roots which drew them together as artists and lifelong friends. Expect anything, but especially, the best of blues, country, folk and great playing and vocalizing. A perfect Sunday show!” – Lincoln Myerson, McCabe’s booker.

(Time varies; usually 8 pm, some 2:30 pm matinees)
“ALWAYS… PATSY CLINE” is a big time music-filled show at the charming little Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W Sierra Madre Bl, Sierra Madre; 626-355-4318; www.sierramadreplayhouse.com

GET SHAMROCKED IRISH MUSIC FESTIVAL, only founded in 2013, is a fresh new event is set to double in capacity again in 2015, with 12,000 Celtic music revelers expected over three days. They’ll hear sixteen bands gathered from across the planet. The venue is Town Square Park in Murrieta, California, for three days – Friday-through-Sunday, September 18-20.
+
“Town Square Park is the perfect venue with free parking and a flat, grassed area with huge stage and natural amphitheater. +
Friday at 9:15 pm, there’s FLATFOOT 56, Chicago-based outfit founded by siblings Tobin, Justin, and Kyle Bawinkel. And they’ll be picking-up the gauntlet thrown down by FLOGGING MOLLY and DROPKICK MURPHYS with their punk-laced “Oi!” rock.

Annual “MILLPOND MUSIC FESTIVAL” always brings fine music performances, this year with headliners TONY FURTADO, DAVID MYLES, RICHARD SMITH, NEW ORLEANS SUSPECTS, INCENDIO, MARCH FOURTH!, DAN CONNOR, THE MILLPOND ALL-STAR JAM, plus the BANANA SLUGS doing a kids performance and multiple NEA-sponsored workshops, and plenty of other acts, all at Millpond Park (Inyo Co. Park) and Campground, NE of Bishop, Cal.
+
Presented by the Inyo Council for the Arts, whose staff attends bunches of other festivals and concerts to choose the best acts, this is a very fun festival that somehow feels intimate in the vast expanse of the great outdoors, in a fine place with the right ambiance and exceptionally good sound, all operating with the spectacular backdrop of the High Sierra. Though not specifically billed as a “folk fest” or an “all-acoustic” affair, essentially it is both, with first-rate acts each day. In addition to the main stage outdoors and with large trees for shade at the top of the slope (which is a bit of a natural grass lawn amphitheater), there is a smaller workshop stage in a large tent. They have a permanent snack bar that cooks good food, including breakfast each morning. Tent camping is available along the lake (the old sawmill’s mill pond, hence the name) and RV camping is available is the developed campground where the showers are located. This one is the autumn counterpart to the annual spring “Live Oak Music Festival” (held a few hundred miles away).
+
Playing a Saturday set at 6:30 pm is INCENDIO, that exceptionally noteworthy trio of fiery acoustic string wizards. They are perennially so popular they are booked back among a lot of “first-time here” acts. If you don’t know INCENDIO, you should check them out at: www.incendioband.com

“RAY BONNEVLLE is like gunpowder and opium.” – Ray Wylie Hubbard. Ray Bonneville, has created and mastered a fusion of traditional American Roots and Blues music all his own and deeply influenced by his upbringing in French Canada and the years he spent writing and playing music in New Orleans. He is known as the master of the slow burn, the groove and one of the best harmonica players alive today. Ray plays more than 150 shows a year in US, Canada and Europe. His performances are riveting and deep, yet full of humor and joy. In 1999 he won the Juno award (Canada’s Grammy) and was nominated twice more. Ray's song “I am the Big Easy” was the most played song by American folk DJs, and won “Song of the Year” in 2009. Ray won the International Blues Challenge in 2012 in Memphis. His 2014 release, “Easy Gone”, has topped the blues, roots and Americana charts since April, 2014. Ray Bonneville is a hard driving, blues dipped, song and groove man writing about the people on the fringe of society. Ray’s vibe is loose and soulful, with a greasy guitar style, horn-like harmonica, smoky vocals and pulsing foot percussion. In 1999 he won the Juno award (Canada’s Grammy) and was nominated twice more. Ray's song “I am the Big Easy” was the most played song by American folk DJs, and won “Song of the Year” in 2009. Ray won the International Blues Challenge in 2012 in Memphis.

Krall has made several national TV appearances to promote the tour, including performances on “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” on Feb 2 and “The Late Show with David Letterman” on Feb 3.

Diana Krall recently headlined “The Montreal International Jazz Festival” performing to over 100,000 loyal fans. GREGORY PORTER, fellow GRAMMY winner and renowned jazz musiacian, joins Diana Krall on this tour. Porter has been called “The next great male jazz singer” by NPR Music. His last album brought this from the Wall Street Journal: “‘Liquid Spirit’ is shot through with gospel, blues and R&B influences… the title track pairs soulful horns with a deep, enveloping bassline that frames the California native’s supple tenor.” The New York Times wrote, “Gregory Porter [is] a powerful baritone who writes his own songs… from a more ’70s or early ’80s-oriented place in the African-American jazz tradition, strong and sometimes experimental yet serenely unacademic, and mightily good.”
