√ LOVERS OF NAT'L PARKS & CLASSIC ARTSY "PARKS"-STYLE ARCHITECTURE — THIS IS FOR YOU
It's a must-read. It's writer Jeff Book's July 29, 2015 feature story, "Meet Mary Colter, the Architect Who Conjured the Romance of the American West." It's delightful, and gives long-overdue credit to the pioneering Ms. Colter, who has been the subject of a feature here in the Guide, as well.
The NEW feature ran this past week in "Curbed," which also offers a free, online subscription, and lets you sign-up for an L.A.-specific edition.
The link for their feature story is:
http://m.curbed.com/archives/2015/07/29/mary-colter-architect.php?utm_campaign=issue-38822&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Curbed+LA
Also read the comment there by "Notewordthy" for even more of the story that the "Curbed" article doesn't cover. (Yes, it's one time that a mere "comment" is accurate and a good read that's worthy of a good published article.)
The Guide's editor first wrote about pioneering architect Mary Colter several years back. He recommends you type in your browser,
"Mary Colter Youtube"
where several nice features will pop-up. After you've read the article, the visual images and two-minute guided presentation by the Park Ranger at the Grand Canyon are real icing on the cake. (And WHO can pass-up a chance to see professional photog’s pictures of the Grand Canyon?)

+
CGB impresario Bob Stane says, “Snap this show up. Fine songs, humor, wonderful voices and instrumental. THIS ACT HAS WARMTH, TALENT AND HISTORY. HIT SONGS!”
+
Jerry Burgan, co-founder of the 'Grammy nominated group, We Five." , returns to the Coffee Gallery Backstage joined by We Five’s lead singer, Debbie Burgan, and their long time bassist, Tholow Chan. With musical roots tracing back to the classic folk era of the early 60s, they rode the leading edge of the folk-rock tidal wave that followed their hit recordings of You Were On My Mind and Get Together.
+
“The Songs & Stories” of Burgan and Chan bring every audience on a first-person musical joy ride though some of the most magical and memorable moments of their common musical experience-- when folk songs topped the charts, Dylan hadn’t plugged in, and Lewynn Davis wasn’t even a glint in the Cohen Brothers’ eye.
+
Between songs, Jerry shares fascinating tales from his new book, Wounds to Bind – A Memoir of the Folk Rock Revolution, interwoven with the spirit of departed legends like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the Weavers, as well as the next wave of artists they inspired – like John Stewart. The former Kingston Trio banjo player and writer of countless classic songs in the musical form that’s come to be called Americana was Jerry’s mentor, so count on hearing some treasures that were learned directly from the master.
+
With a the wealth of classic folk material draw from, along with seven We Five albums and Jerry’s solo CD, Reflections, Songs & Stories, you can count on hearing some favorite tunes—though a few surprises are always part of the fun. The Burgans’ command of the stage is tastily complimented by bassist and humorist, Tholow Chan. Together, their rapport has a seamless quality that’s been honed by time as they draw each audience into the feel-good experience. When the three of them sing together, their tight arrangements bring to life the exhilarating power, harmony and charm that made folk trios so popular. When the audience joins in, it’s a love-in. Lighters are not permitted so bring your battery-powered candles (or your cell phones).

+
Kevin Burton Smith, Butler’s "Music Guy," says, "Whether it's ELAYNA, known as 'the Queen of the Antelope Valley Folk music scene,' offering-up her uncompromising intelligent and passionate songs of love, power and personal enlightenment, or JOHN BERGSTROM and GENCY BROWN of WESTERN STATE OF MIND singing tall tales and rough-hewn ballads of the Old (and new) West, it'll be an evening of homegrown entertainment, as two of our long-time favourite acts come home to Butler's Coffee."
+
Kevin continues, "There'll be some great singing, some great playing and, as usual, the same great coffee and snacks you've come to expect."
+

8 pm PHAT CAT SWINGER plays a really big shew, sponsored by the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association at Grace Hall, 73 N Hill Av, Pasadena 91116.
+
All ages event. Ticket info below.
+
They're playing Serbia in September. That should give you the idea they're a big local deal. Indeed, Phat Cat Swinger has toured the country and performed shows with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Royal Crown Revue, and played alongside The Coasters.
+
One of the best bands to dance to in the surrounding Los Angeles areas, Phat Cat Swinger was influenced by the classic sounds of Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, and Frank Sinatra and mixed with the new swingin’ sounds of such bands as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, and Brian Setzer. Phat Cat Swinger is a band filled with booming toms, walking bass lines, jumpin’ guitar rhythms, roaring horn lines and smooth vocals.
+
Born of the idea to combine fun, laughter and great music to entertain audiences with a collective showmanship, the nine band members of Phat Cat Swinger have grown to be one of the hottest live swing bands to hit Southern California’s underground scene.
+
A big break for the band came when they made an appearance in Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” music video, where they performed in the beginning scene of the song dressed up to the nines in white suits; they have also appeared as band members for the Jonas Brothers in their music video "Love Bug" and more recently played for the Stars And Stripes Benefit at the venue of every man’s dream, the Playboy Mansion.
+
Phat Cat Swinger's first album (self titled) was released in July 2005 and held such fanatical songs such as “Hep Cats,” “Money Tree,” and the crowd’s favorite sing-along song, “Smolie Olie Olie.” Most of the band's original songs were composed by Marco Palos with the rest of the band pitching-in until they reached melodies that take you from toe-tapping jazz to smooth, sultry tango.
+
Together with original songs they perform nostalgic cover songs that take you back (even if you weren't there), including “Run Around Sue,” “Sing Sing Sing”, “The Way You Look Tonight,” “In The Mood,” and “Jump Jive And Wail.”
+
In May 2009, the band released another disc, this one a three song EP with their original, “Won’t You Tell Me?” and “Ain’t Got No Home” (which is amazing to see live, where Phil hits those high notes and Marco, with his sultry deep baritone voice, adds wonders to this song), plus their new song, “Dance Dance Dance,” with lyrics written by lead vocalist Tim Porter. This band lets listeners know there is no right or wrong way to dance.

Note, “the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more.”
+
In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.
