♪ SHORT-NOTICE / IMPORTANT BENEFIT CONCERT / SHOWCASE / POTLUCK TONIGHT

Tonight we all have an opportunity to give back to someone who has brought us a lot of musical enjoyment. “Where” is at the end of the piece. For more than a decade, DANA CHARNOFSKY has run her “Purple DC Concert Series,” weekly for a few years in Santa Monica, every year for the holidays, and in a variety of venues – including as “guest” house concerts where her pretty smile and “please-please let us use your house as a venue” always does the trick – throughout Southern California, and always for the benefit of touring and local artists alike.

Now, Dana needs us all. She was in a Hollywoodesque auto accident and she’s lucky to be alive without serious injury. But her car was totally destroyed. Insurance isn’t going to help, and the full-size pickup truck that clobbered her nice little car? It was driven by someone who is getting away with claiming it was Dana’s fault. (And we all know how imperfect, fallible, and generally screwed-up the legal system is.)

SO: COME OUT TONIGHT TO A “BENEFIT CONCERT FOR DANA’S SMASHED CAR.” Musically, it’ll be QUITE good, since a great many musicians feel they owe Dana, and are coming to perform. This could well be the multi-artist cavalcade-showcase of the year!

Dana’s spirits are good, as illustrated by the quote she sent: "It's not whether you get knocked down; it's whether you get up." – Vince Lombardi.

And she reports, “My friend Kris is also making a Go Fund Me site. I don't think it's active yet, but when it is it'll be at:

http://www.gofundme.com/3u9hwgf3uk

We’ll pick up Dana’s account of the accident, written for post on that site, midway through the story:

“When the car stopped I couldn't breathe and must've seen too many ‘Grey's Anatomy’ episodes, ‘cuz I was imagining there was a pole sticking out of my side. Luckily there was not, it was just massive pain - and ultimately bruises and cuts all over my body. Though I was taken to the ER, I was fortunate not to have any cracked ribs or other broken bones, not even a chipped tooth! Airbags are truly lifesavers!

“The accident was horrific, but what makes it worse is that there were no witnesses and the girl who hit me claims I ran a red light. It's her word against mine, so unless proof of her guilt is found there's no way for me to win. I've been trying to find a video of that intersection and any other evidence, but it's been an uphill battle. Most of my bruises and cuts are healed by now and I've been going to the chiropractor trying to address my pains. It's funny how pain can travel from one area to another over time.

“The financial drain has been stressful, partly because I carry the minimum legal car insurance, so I'm not covered for Collision. Yikes! The car that was totalled was only 5 weeks old (well, it was two years old, but new for me - I'd just bought it)! I still owe on that one. The towing and storage costs alone were ridiculous; thank goodness I had friends help me find a free place in Ventura to move the totalled car to while working out logistics! There's been one cost after another, including of course, for a rental car and the chiropractor. My brother has been kind enough to front me the money - again - so I could buy yet another "new" used car, and I need to pay him back ASAP!

“The nightmare is ongoing in terms of logistics, but overall I consider myself a very, very lucky gal. The concern and offers of help from friends and family are touching and one of the bright spots in this whole mess. I'm so grateful for all your love!

“If justice were served I'd find a way to show that the pick-up driver is at fault, and she'd have to pay for turning my life upside down. In the mean time, I know I'm fortunate. My music friends are putting on a benefit on my behalf, to help raise money for some of my expenses, and there is even a second one possibly in the works. Wow! Going through something like this is a great reminder of how precious life is and you better believe I'm grateful every day that I walked away in one piece. I'm so thankful for being okay and so thankful to all of you for helping me through a really tough time.

“Come have fun with us!” – Dana.

The benefit is being held as part of the weekly “WINE & SONG” concert series, at Old Oak Cellars, 2620-D East Foothill Bl, Pasadena 91107; 626-794-1244.

It’s a nice venue and just off the 210 Fwy, but hard to spot the place. When you're close, you’ll see a big “Massage” sign that's right in front (not the same business, thought)

Start time is 7 pm, and this is a POTLUCK, so bring something to share if you can. And all musicians – bring your instruments to perform.

♪ NEW RELEASE / TOUR LAUNCHES TONIGHT, WITH ARTISTS WHO’VE SOLD A HALF-BILLION ALBUMS

Let's start with the eye-popping quote:

"...the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half-a-billion albums."

30-City North American Tour in Support of New Album "TOTO XIV" Begins Tonight

by Keith Hagan

Los Angeles (Aug 5, 2015) — After a ten-year recording hiatus, TOTO has returned with one of their most successful albums ever. Released earlier this year, "TOTO XIV" charted all around the world, showing the true dedication of their worldwide fans. The album landed in the Top 10 on the charts in nine countries: Germany #4, Netherlands #2, Japan #2, Denmark #7, Czech Republic #10, Finland #5, Norway #6, Sweden #4 and Switzerland #3.

"TOTO XIV" also became their first new studio album to chart in the US & UK since 1988’s "The Seventh One."

The band now begins an extensive North American tour, this evening in Lynn, Massachusetts.

TOTO is joining forces with YES this summer for 27 of the 31 dates of a co-headlining tour. Among the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, Grammy Award-winning YES has sold nearly 40 million albums in a career that has so far spanned more than four decades. YES continues with its tradition of symphonic progressive rock that remains timelessly fresh and innovative.

TOTO, with over 35 years together and thousands of credits and accolades to their names, remains one of the top-selling touring and recording acts in the world. Prior their North American tour, the band embarked on a European headline arena tour with appearances at key festivals.

Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half-a-billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with more than 200 Grammy nominations.

The new album, "TOTO XIV," is a realized vision. Three-plus decades in the making, it exhibits world-class musicianship, masterful arrangements, topical lyrical commentary, and melodies that the collective of LUKATHER, PAICH, PORCARO, WILLIAMS, and their assembled band-mates bring to life.

"TOTO XIV" is the band’s first album of all-new material since 2006’s "Falling In Between." However, the band personally considers the new album to be the true follow-up to "TOTO IV," ten albums back, which made the band global superstars.

Precious few individuals or bands can harken back like that over a successful catalog of material. It's a testimony to their endurance and enduring popularity.

The three-nation North American tour plays only two Southern California dates:

Sat, Sep 5, near Temecula, in Pala, in the Pala Casino's Starlight Theater, and,

Sun, Sep 6 at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park (L.A.)

♪ “A&E”-? “ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT”-? IT’S 'I&P' — THE INCARCERATION & PENITENTIARY CHANNEL

A&E tv notified us this morning of "A NEW SERIES, BRINGING YOU BEHIND BARS."

Here is the reply we sent to A&E's programming department:

"Please: just what is the fascination with all these 'gritty-inside-the-prison' shows? They are — ALL of them — disgusting. Not only do we not watch, but we know NO ONE who watches any "inside prison" shows, with which your network has been littered for some time.

"The letters that comprise your network's name — A&E — were picked to mean 'Arts & Entertainment.'

"Do you even remember that?

"Where are THE 'ARTS'-? You had, for years, a wonderful series called 'BREAKFAST WITH THE ARTS,' and it was a reliable oasis even as all your other arts programming vanished. But you dumped that fine show a few seasons back, and replaced it with loudly threatening, angry thuggish morons, who, based on your promos that we try not to see, are generically bedecked with swastika tattoos. And “Breakfast with the Arts” remains a fond memory and real loss, one still felt.

"Fast-forward to now: You should change your corporate name from 'A&E' to 'I&P' — the Incarceration & Penitentiary Channel.

Even MSNBC broadcasts news weekdays, before putting itself in prison all weekend. And they’re disgusting for doing that to their loyal weekday / weeknight viewers. But YOU, at A&E? It’s gotten to the point where you haven’t promoted ANYTHING, or scheduled anything new and exciting, for, how long now? Certainly a season or two or three.

Can't you find ANYTHING else to program on your network? Like many, say, some Arts & Entertainment?

+
It’s a real, live stage MUSICAL, a theatrical production focusing on the vocal magic of PATSY CLINE, you’ll experience how she evoked the heartbreak and longing that have made her songs country and pop classics. Written by Ted Swindley, directed by Robert Marra, with musical director Sean Paxton, it’s a Sierra Madre Playhouse production starring CORI CABLE KIDDER and NIKKI D’AMICO.
+
“Always….Patsy Cline” depicts the legendary singer backed by a live band performing twenty-seven of her greatest hits in this jukebox musical. Patsy Cline (1932-1963) was one of the most popular and influential vocalists of the 20th Century.
+
Although most associated with country music, she was the first female crossover artist, also singing traditional pop, torch songs, rockabilly, honky-tonk, country swing, and gospel. The first female solo artist admitted to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Patsy was also included among “The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll” by VH1, “The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time” by Rolling Stone, and “The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music” by CMT.
+
She first appeared on radio in Winchester, VA in 1947. In 1954, country star Jimmy Dean brought her aboard as a regular on the radio show “Town and Country Jamboree” in Arlington, VA. In 1955, she began appearing on television, on the TV version of “Grand Ole Opry” and on “Ozark Jubilee.”
+
But it was her sensational success on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” in 1957 that truly launched her as a national figure. Godfrey’s show, a precursor of competitions like “Star Search” and “American Idol,” also launched Ann-Margret and Pat Boone, among others.
+
“Always…Patsy Cline” is based on a real incident that occurred in 1961. Super-fan Louise Seger befriends Cline before a concert in Houston. After the show, Louise takes her home, cooks her breakfast and appears with her on a local radio broadcast. The two maintain a correspondence, writing each other letters until Cline’s untimely death in a Tennessee plane crash in 1963. The star closed each of her letters to Seger, “Always…Patsy Cline.”
+
CORI CABLE KIDDER portrays PATSY CLINE. A graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, she toured with IN THE MOOD and sang at Tokyo Disney for a year. Coming to L.A., she appeared in+ “The Producers” and with SWING DAMES, performing the music of the Andrews Sisters.

In this production of “As You Like It, ” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

There are steam and gas engines chugging away, powering historic tractors and farm equipment along other relics, in the Weaver's Barn, the Farmhouse, the Schoolhouse, the 1930s gas station replica (posted price "32 cents a gallon"),and there’s a model railroad, a Blacksmith shop, and plenty to delight young and old. The combination of national and regional bands on the turn-of-the-19th / 20th century stage built by the museum folks just for the festival. It's constructed without nails, using just dowels and pins to hold it together.
+
In all, it’s three days of great live music from twelve national and local bands, and wonderful activities, such as Kids Camp, Meet the Bands, other music workshops and family-friendly things to do, spontaneous jam sessions, and the ever-popular instrument raffles, tasty food, and a variety of vendors. Summergrass is enjoyable for the whole family, a great, affordable family event, and not too far to drive.

The 1975 Broadway hit re-imagined “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with an all-black cast and a NYC-inspired “Land of Oz.” The live production, which is partnered with CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, follows NBC’s hugely successful 2013 hit “A Sound of Music Live” and last year’s “Peter Pan Live,” continuing a newly-rediscovered tradition that actually harkens back to tv’s 1950s roots when such live productions as “Playhouse 90,” “The Milton Berle Show,” “Ed Sullivan,” and “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour” were weekly staples.

The quintet's critically praised 2012 debut album, “My Head is an Animal,” sold more than 2 million copies worldwide and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. In addition to countless sold-out headlining shows around the world, OF MONSTERS AND MEN have performed at various music festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza.

Actor-comedian SKYLER STONE brings his wildly popular Los Angeles staple show “Comedy Rocks” to the GRAMMY Museum. It's a celebration of comedy and music that's sold-out for seven years in a row. As one half of folk-rock duo THE CIVIL WARS, singer-songwriter JOY WILLIAMS has won four GRAMMY Awards, including the award for “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” in 2014 for "From This Valley." The song is featured on the duo's 2013 self-titled album, which marked their last set of original material before announcing their breakup in 2014.
+
Before THE CIVIL WARS, WILLIAMS had a career as a solo artist, releasing her debut self-titled album in 2001 at age 19. She subsequently released “By Surprise” (2002) and “Genesis” (2005) and two EPs, “One of Those Days” and “Songs from this and Songs from That” (2009). "Sunny Day," a track from the latter EP, was featured in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" and on the soundtrack to the 2010 film “An Invisible Sign.”

On June 26, this year, Williams returned with her new solo set, “Venus,” featuring 11 songs that are "unstintingly honest," according to acclaimed music journalist Jaan Uhelszki. Produced by Matt Moris, the new album “Venus” features Williams collaborating with artists MICHAEL EINZIGER and CHARLIE PEACOCK, among others. "You might call it a coming-of-age album, but it is so much more than that," said Uhelszki. "It shows how one woman has come to live her truth — the good, the bad, the petulant, the honorable."
