Really 'n truly more truly outstanding concerts happen this weekend than we usually see in a month or two. So it's not a good time to hole-up at home. Read the listings and write-ups within. You'll be glad for it.
THIS WEEKEND'S QUOTE...
"Enough of your damn emails." — Bernie Sanders.
Last week was encouraging. Friday's "Art Night Pasadena" was a cavalcade of excellence. Saturday at the "Seaside Highland Games" fulfilled all expectations for virtuosic music and exciting dance performance, plus welcome surprises. Sunday, the first time the "Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddlers' Festival" operated under management of the Goleta Valley Historical Society, proved they are committed to excellence. And Tuesday, a different kind of stage was memorable — it had neither a kids table nor a food fight — and how refreshing. Perhaps there is hope for a Kartrashian-free future. And Friday, it RAINED (it even flooded in some places!) So there's plenty to celebrate!
Let's get started.

Secret Mountain tells us, "'Sleep Softly' is our third instalment in our classical music series after 'Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music,' and 'Simply Fantastic.'"
Second, Hilary Grist's "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has received a Recommended Award for storytelling. Vancouver-based indie musician and visual artist Hilary Grist writes, performs and, along with her creative team, spearheads the unique clay animation shown depicted on the cover. "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has also been nominated for a Canadian Folk Award.
Both new titles were released in 2015 and have inspired many enthusiastic reviews. The Guide has reviewed past releases from Secret Mountain and we definitely liked them.

MUSIC CONFERENCE /TRADE SHOW,
in OC (Anaheim):
The 2016 “NAMM SHOW” is the music industry’s biggest annual trade show, music conference, and gathering of music retailers with manufactures and endorsed musicians who very notably perform. It features opportunities for music educators, school administrators, college students, and NAMM Foundation Partners to attend, learn and connect with the music products industry. People in all those categories will be able to register for badges and reserve hotel rooms starting September 30, 2015. Mark your calendar and plan ahead, so you’ll have all your information ready to reserve your room. As the promo proclaims, “The music begins at The NAMM Show — and for that reason, it attracts the world's most powerful buyers.”
The basics... NAMM completely takes-over the Anaheim Convention Center and all the meeting and convention spaces in the surrounding hotels. The Convention Center is located at 800 W Katella Av, Anaheim, CA 92802.
The daily schedules are:
√ Thursday, Jan 21, 10 am–6 pm
√ Friday, Jan 22, 10 am–6 pm
√ Saturday, Jan 23, 10 am–6 pm
√ Sunday, Jan 24, 10 am–5 pm √ Hall E and Level 2 open at 9:30 am
Information on the 2016 NAMM Show grows rather regularly at:
https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016
Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.
It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:
“Planning to host an event at the NAMM Show? This is just a friendly reminder that when creating and promoting your event during NAMM in and around Anaheim, there are a couple of rules to follow.
√ “Events taking place at an Anaheim venue are only approved for use by NAMM member companies.
√ “The use of the NAMM name, logo, and/or font in the title of your event is prohibited. The NAMM name may be used in your promotion only to reference that your event is occurring during the dates of NAMM show. This will ensure everybody is clear about who is producing the event. All NAMM produced events take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, Grand Plaza, and Hilton or Marriott. Other events are not official NAMM events and should not be promoted as such.
√ “If NAMM is mentioned anywhere in the promotion, please add “Event produced by XYZ company and NAMM has no affiliation with or liability for this event.”
Keep this link handy for reference as you dream and scheme...

In this digital era, “listening to a record” has become a near-nonexistent phenomenon; even CD purchases tend to go straight onto an iPod from which tracks will pop up at random. UK-based singer-songwriter SARAH McQUAID was keen to ensure that her fourth solo album, “Walking into White,” got at least a few full-length listens before being subsumed into playlists – so she’s performing the whole thing live, track by track, as the first half of each concert on her forthcoming September-October US tour.
“Sarah McQuaid has clearly held true to her own musical vision,” wrote Helen Gregory in Folk Radio UK, “and it’s to be hoped that ‘Walking into White’ is the album which will bring her the wider commercial success she so richly deserves.”
Belgian blogger Michel Preumont (concerts-review.over-blog.com) described it as “Original, acrobatique et audacieux ... Un album brillant ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives pour Sarah McQuaid.” (“Original, acrobatic and audacious ... A brilliant album that opens new perspectives for Sarah McQuaid”).

8 pm JOLIE HOLLAND plus special guest Mike Coykendall play McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497; www.mccabes.com
Over the span of her career, Jolie Holland has knotted together a century of American song —jazz, blues, soul, rock'n'roll —into a stew that is impossible to categorize with any conventional critical terminology. This is her burden and her gift, to know all of these American songs of the last ten decades in her head and her heart, and to have to wrestle with their legacy. She dives straight to the pathos of a song the way the very greatest singers, singers like Mavis Staples, or Al Green, or Skip James, or Tom Waits do. Upon first encounter, her songs seem challenging, perhaps unsettling at times, but as so many poets and rockers have shown us (from Dante Alighieri to William Blake to Sylvia Plath to Patti Smith to Nick Cave to Mark E. Smith) that's where the beauty lies. As evident on her first recordings, Holland apparently has no fear of the truth, and there is no emotional core that she cannot reach in song. In fact she thrives on the red hot center of a musical composition, in all its strange and brutal detail. Note how easily the line "I've been taken outside and I've been brutalized" trips off her tongue in Joe Tex's "The Love You Save." Her latest release is Wine Dark Sea, an album of unprecedented confidence and merciless brilliance. Opening this amazing evening will be veteran songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mike Coykendall (Old Joe Clarks, M Ward, She & Him), who's been quietly carving his unique musical niche for the last three decades. McCabe's booker Lincoln Myerson says, "This is going to be a very special night."

8 pm TOM BALL & KENNY SULTAN play the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
Categorized as part of the acoustic blues revival period of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan inject fun themes into their repertoire, whether it’s “No Money, No Honey,” “Your Shoes Don’t Fit,” “Chicken a la Blues,” “Your Mind Is in the Gutter,” or “My Last Meal.” Sultan’s introduction to blues was via his brother’s T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters records, which he had brought back to California after a stint in Chicago. Sultan and his brother were regulars at the famed Los Angeles folk/blues club the Ash Grove, where they watched and met Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Terry. During Sultan’s teen years, he played electric guitar in garage-style rock bands, then moved to Santa Barbara to attend the university and earn a degree in black studies.
Ball, too, was a regular at the Ash Grove, although the two never met there. Inspired by the ’60s folk revival, he took up guitar at age 11, then three years later learned to play harmonica. From there, he played in Chicago-style blues bands. In 1978, he moved to Santa Barbara; a short time later, Ball noticed an ad for a gig where Sultan was playing blues and ragtime guitar. Ironically, Ball was nearby playing in a rock band, and asked his then-girlfriend (now wife) to take notes and observe Sultan. When her notes read, “He’s got a great sense of humor, and he plays Gary Davis and Blind Blake, and he’s a great guitarist and likes to drink beer,” Ball knew he had to met Sultan. Immediately a partnership was forged, and they’ve been together since 1979.
"Bloodshot Eyes," their acoustic styles of blues, ragtime, and folk, has a trail that's like what's spilled over from tossing fruit in a blender and creating a tasty, nutritious drink. In 1983, they released "Who Drank My Beer?" Moving over to the Flying Fish label, they released "Bloodshot Eyes" (1986), "Too Much Fun" (1990), and "Filthy Rich" (1993).
Rounding-out their careers, they perform studio work such as Levis 501 radio jingles, and Ball played and sang in the Eddie Murphy movie "The Distinguished Gentlemen." Another aspect of their careers is writing instructional books, such as Sultan’s "Introduction to Blues Guitar" and "Acoustic Blues Guitar," and Ball’s "Blues Harmonica." Ball released a solo album in 1996, "Guitar Music," employing diverse styles from Bach to Blind Blake. That same year, Ball & Sultan released "Double Vision," continuing what they love and know best: blues with a funny bone. Obviously, these well-rounded artists bring a lot to bring to every performance.

8 pm RICHARD SMITH plus TONY FURTADO (TRIO) play Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com
RICHARD SMITH is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. Incredible fingerstyle player (National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion) and, also, one of the hottest Bebop/Django/Flatpicking players in the world, Richard Smith presents an evening of Travis picking, ragtime, jazz, and classical.
His playing ranges from amazing to flashy and beautiful. Here are a couple of quotes regarding Richard — from Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed:
“The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know, only better.” — Chet Atkins, CGP.
Richard Smith owns many instruments, but his most prized is a guitar, which has written on it, “To my hero, Richard” — signed, Jerry Reed.
And Chet Atkins Mandell says "Two Thumbpicks Up! Way up."
About TONY FURTADO...
“Tony Furtado is a major musical force without a doubt. He has his black-belt in voice and bottleneck guitar and his banjo playing scares the crap out of me.” — David Lindley, musical adventurer.
Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story).
All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”
A native of Pleasanton, California, who now makes his home in Portland, Oregon, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12, inspired by the "Beverly Hillbillies" TV show and a sixth grade music report. He first attracted national attention in 1987 when he won the "National Bluegrass Banjo Championship" in Winfield, Kansas. Not long after that, Tony opted for the life of a full-time professional musician, joining Laurie Lewis & Grant Street. A second victory at Winfield, in 1991, bookended his years with Grant Street.
In 1990, Tony signed a recording deal with Rounder Records, one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies. Beginning with Swamped in 1990, he recorded six critically acclaimed albums for the label, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. During this period, Tony also performed and recorded with the band Sugarbeat and the Rounder Banjo Extravaganza with Tony Trischka and Tom Adams.
Beginning in the late 1990s—influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal—Tony added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats: solo, in a duo or trio or with his full five-person band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with such legendary musicians as Gregg Allman and with such esteemed slide guitarists as David Lindley, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth.
Tony has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such prestigious music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and countless others. “I love playing live,” he says. “All my energy is focused on the love of playing music and rolling with the moment. It’s a give and take from the audience to the stage, and back. And the music that is created is something that otherwise might not occur without that flow.”
Tony has recorded and produced almost a dozen CDs for various labels such as Dualtone, What Are Records and Funzalo Records. Tony enthusiastically describes his newest CD, The Bell, as “the most personal of my career.” To be released this summer on his own "You say Furtado Records" label, "The Bell" is an important release for several reasons: it represents a return to Tony’s banjo-playing roots, with the banjo and cello-banjo more prominent than in recent years; the original songs concern such weighty themes as the loss of his father, the birth of his son and his own creative rebirth with the move to a new record label and management team; his working band is featured; and, most important of all, this is the first album in a long time on which Tony had complete artistic control. It’s his music, done his way. ( Jon Hartley Fox ) www.richardsmithmusic.com www.tonyfurtado.com

"Alt-country" is certainly an overused musical term these days, but when it comes to Robbie Fulks, there isn't a more appropriate descriptor. With vocal and musical chops that would rival the finest honky-tonker, Fulks' biting, often hilarious skewering of mainstream Nashville has forever placed him outside of the traditional country music spotlight. That's their loss, for in our opinion, Fulks is one of the finest songwriters and performers out there. He's the Guinness book of records holder as “The Fastest Fiddle Player in the World,” and you can see him perform in L.A.'s best intimate acoustic music venue, the Coffee Gallery Backstage.
This one man show will feature Frankie on fiddle, viola, and tin whistle. For a mere $20 one can see, and hear, FRANKIE GAVIN, a legend of the fiddle and the most famous violinist in Ireland.
Frankie has performed for FOUR U.S. Presidents AND the Queen of England, with the first Presidental notch on his bow at the age of six, when JFK came to Galway, Ireland. That was the historic visit when President Kennedy came back to The Emeral Isle to visit his ancesteral roots in his homeland town of Moneygal, Ireland.
“FRANKIE GAVIN is one of the genuine legends of Irish music. With All-Ireland Championship victories on both fiddle and flute, sixteen albums with the Dé Dannan, seven solo albums,as well as appearances with such luminaries as Earl Scruggs, Stephane Grapelli,Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Elvis Costello and The Rolling Stones. ‘The prince of Irish fiddlers’ is one of the outstanding performers of the past thirty years,” Many, many critics and publications. Part of Frankie Gavin’s enduring appeal lies in his astounding technical ability and unceasing quest for innovation - musical pieces more commonly associated with the likes of the Beatles and George Frederic Handel are now common place in Frankie’s repertoire as an Irish musician. Most pertinent of all is the knack he has for imparting to his audience his own enthusiasm, the sheer joy, the magic of great music-making.” — Irish Music Magazine (the definitive in Irish Music).
Frankie has also been invited to play for numerous State officials including President John F. Kennedy on historic visit to Ireland. French president Francois Mitterand and England's Prince Charles. Of a special event in America, United States Ambassador to Ireland,Jean Kennedy Smith is reported to have commented that "The best all 'round performance of the entire week at Kennedy Center.” Are we paying attention, here?
Frankie Gavin of The Tolboth Theatre in Stirling, Scotland, wrote:
"Because he's known as 'The prince of Irish fiddlers,' and produces what's ben called 'Irish fiddling as good as it gets,' there was high anticipation at Stirling's Tolbooth theatre for the Frankie Gavin show. The crowd wasn't disappointed. He gave a glittering performance over nearly two hours. Yet it was all so laid back. He sat, almost reclining as if in an armchair, the while creating the most spectacular sound from a bow which mostly seemed to be moving within barely four-inch compass. The amazingly tricky fingers seemed equally effortless. They weren't, of course,as when he played 'Carolan's Concerto', using roughly twice the number of notes that even oul' Turlough had planned for... (During this, there was metaphorically the sound of fiddlers in the audience snapping their fiddles over their knees, and vowing to never touch the instrument again!)"

CYNTHIA CARLE... has performed her own songs,on topics ranging from lost love to artificial dog testicles,at venues including Comedy Central Stage's Sit 'n Spin,TopTune,Mbar,Genghis Cohen,Molly Malone's,Witzend,McCabe’s, Firefly Bistro, Talking Stick, Old Oak Cellars, the Fanatic Salon, the Hollywood Fringe, and The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Her screenwriting credits include "The Sixth Man" and "You Wish" with Christopher Reed (for which they were Humanitas Award finalists),and the upcoming revenge road-trip comedy "Sharkpunching in America." Her vicious alternative musical Christmas show, "Christmas Smackdown," written with Mark Nutter, has been in performed in L.A., as well as at Chicago's iO, and at the Laurie Beechman in NY. It includes her tunes "Angels" and "Severed Swedish Heads." She was best choreography nominee at the L.A. Weekly Theatre Awards for "Re-Animator the Musical," in which she also played Dr. Harrod and a cookie-throwing zombie Brownie, in L.A. at the Steve Allen Theater, at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and at the Edinburgh Fringe. As an actor, she’s been on Broadway in both musicals and non-musicals (she was drawn by Al Hirschfeld in the New York Times with a Nina in her hair), and Off-Broadway. She’s whooshed around in long dresses with corsets and fancy accents at leading regional theaters including the Guthrie, and Actors Theatre of Louisville, and in films including Louis Malle’s "Alamo Bay," playing a socio-economically challenged trailer-dwelling flower of Texas opposite Ed Harris. As choral geek, she's sung Beethoven's Ninth all over the place including Disney Hall under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and at the Hollywood Bowl in Gustavo Dudamel's inaugural. You’ll find her songs "Angels," "Down at the Gitmo," and "Passionate," on YouTube. She’s thrilled senseless to be sharing the Coffee Gallery stage with Marty Axelrod, as she is his biggest,if not tallest, fan.
MARTY AXELROD is an accomplished songwriter whose focus these days is simple: he wants to make you laugh. And shed a tear. Ideally during the same song. And he wants you to keep listening. So he tries to surprise and delight you with each line, each rhyme, each melodic turn. That is his mission as a songwriter. It is not a skill that was taught in his native Cleveland, Ohio. Marty had to spend time in Nashville to study the craft, co-writing with such luminaries as Irene Kelly, Rand Bishop and the late Tim Johnson. One of Marty’s songs was even recorded by folk legend Judy Collins…but it didn’t make the album. Happily ensconced in Northeast Los Angeles, Marty produced and co-wrote the acclaimed concept album "Songs of Shiloh" with Nicole Gordon, which the pair debuted live on radio's long-lost "Tied to the Tracks." Marty's musical "Emperor Norton," co-written with Kim Ohanneson, has had four successful runs in San Francisco and L.A. His songs have appeared on HBO’s "True Blood," "Friday Night Lights," and other soundtracks, including a really bad Patrick Swayze movie… but at least Swayze dances to the song.
Marty is a member of the six-man songwriter collective Tall Men Group, where he is known for songs about a cat lady and the first guy to make fire. Songwriters are among Marty’s favorite people, and of those, Cynthia Carle may be his musical soul mate. The idea of trading songs with her on the Coffee Gallery (back)stage makes him giddy with excitement.

8 pm TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS play Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com
Tracy Newman started playing guitar as a young teen, usually sitting on the diving board of her family’s pool, strumming for hours each day having been influenced by the Kingston Trio. The events and work she has done after that has lead to why she is able to write interesting, funny, and entertaining songs. In the early 70s, she joined an improvisation class taught by Gary Austin, which became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides being in the show, she began teaching and directing there. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered there by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live. Others include Phil Hartmann, Will Ferrell, Kathy Griffin, and Lisa Kudrow.
It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. They started on Cheers, and worked on many shows, including Bob (Bob Newhart), The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show and Hiller and Diller (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.)
In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for writing the ground-breaking “coming out” episode of Ellen. In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, According to Jim, which recently completed it’s eighth and final season of production. Tracy has been writing songs all along and is once again performing full-time. She has three CDs: “A Place in the Sun,” “I Just See You” and “I Can Swing Forever,” (which is for children, and is about to be released.) Her current band is made up of Gene Lippmann (guitar and vocal), John Cartwright (bass), Paula Fong (vocal) and Doug Knoll (drums). The music is essentially acoustic folk. They do a funny, moving and memorable show.

7 pm THE FRETLESS brings Celtic & Irish music from a hot act, with international flavor and the highest degrees from Berklee College Of Music, to play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001. Reservations, 626-798-6236.
Bob Stane, the venue's impresario, really feels his oats when he books an act of this caliber. He asks, "Are you aware of the multi-Grammy Award acts that grace the stage of The Coffee Gallery Backstage? And stars from all over the world who migrate here? And highly talented and intelligent 'pick of the litter' acts from music schools such as Berklee ? This is the center of high music art. Good music. Good music and stagecraft."
"THE FRETLESS bring CELTIC & IRISH with degrees from Berklee School of music. Phenoms that swing it. String Quartet. Champions in exciting fields.
"THE FRETLESS are a young and innovative band that melds the worlds of Celtic, folk and chamber music into an amazing and unique sound they like to call rad trad. They may look like a string quartet, but with innovative arrangements and roots deeply based in Celtic and Canadian fiddle styles, The Fretless is creating their own unique path in the music world.
"Three members of The Fretless (Ivonne, Karrnnel and Trent) met many many years ago in the Canadian fiddling and step dancing competition circuit and quickly became great friends and each others best competition. It was only natural that they would all go on to end up individually making names for themselves as Canada's top fiddlers. Winning such awards as BC Provincial Fiddle Champion multiple times (Trent & Ivonne), Saskatchewan Provincial fiddle Champion four times (Karrnnel), Canadian National Fiddle Championship finalists (Trent, Ivonne & Karrnnel), Grand North American Fiddle Champion five times (Ivonne) and finalists (Trent & Karrnnel), European Fiddle Champion (Ivonne); it is clear how they would continue on to much musical success.
"Ivonne and Trent went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, USA. It was there that they met Eric. It's not often that you see a cellist that can play trad and Irish music. They quickly bonded and ended up graduating Magna Cum Laude (that's with honors) in 2 degrees in Professional Music (Trent & Eric) and a dual major of Music Business & Management and Performance (Ivonne). Collectively they have earned the following prestigious awards:
√ 2014 CFMA Ensemble of the Year
√ 2014 WCMA Instrumental Album of the Year
√ 2012 CFMA Ensemble of the Year
√ 2012 CFMA Instrumental Group of the Year

3 pm THE ROLAND WHITE BAND — he of The Kentucky Colonels, Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt & The Nashville Grass, Country Gazette, and The Nashville Bluegrass Band — brings his own Grammy-nominated band to the intimate Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; www.coffeegallery.com
THE ROLAND WHITE BAND in its West Coastand touring incarnation features Diane Bouska on guitar & vocals, Herb Pedersen on banjo & vocals, Bill Bryson on bass & vocals, Blaine Sprouse on fiddle, and leader Roland White on mandolin.
After a distinguished career devoted to playing bluegrass in several of the most popular and influential groups in the music’s history, Roland White embarked on another chapter of personal musical discovery, fronting his own bluegrass group in the form of The Roland White Band. And really, it was the only thing he still hadn't done.
Roland is known as one of the few unique stylists on the mandolin, with his own unmistakable sound and touch. His gifts as a musician have delighted audiences everywhere: his vitality, soul, and infectious rhythm enable him to speak and even dance through his instrument. Add to this his mastery of ensemble playing, harmonic sophistication, and warm voice guided by a subtle and swinging sense of phrasing, and you have the legend of bluegrass that Roland has become.
Springing from a large family of musicians, they formed The Kentucky Colonels, whose influence has far exceeded the band’s short tenure as an active band. Their "Appalachian Swing" album remains one of the most influential albums of that era. Roland’s tradition-based yet imaginative mandolin playing alongside Clarence’s breathtaking guitar virtuosity cemented this as an indispensable album in any true bluegrass aficionado’s collection. During the years the Kentucky Colonels were together, they featured such great musicians as Roger Bush, Billy Ray Lathum, Leroy Mack, Bobby Slone, and the legendary fiddler Scott Stoneman. And Roland, after The Kentucky Colonels?
Roland became guitarist for Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in the late '60s, absorbing the traditional feel and repertoire from the acknowledged "Father Of Bluegrass" that remains a strong element in his music today. Roland's tenure included several landmark recording sessions as a Bluegrass Boy, among them "The Gold Rush," "Is The Blue Moon Still Shining," "Crossing The Cumberlands," "Sally Goodin," "Kentucky Mandolin," and "The Walls Of Time." From Monroe’s band?
Roland moved on to that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973.
He next spent thirteen years with the progressive west coast group Country Gazette, with such bluegrass luminaries as Byron Berline, Alan Munde, Joe Carr, and Roger Bush.
Then came the Nashville Bluegrass Band, who distinguished themselves as the premier bluegrass band of their generation, winning two Grammys andtheir earning Grammy nominations on every one of their albums. All that was left was Roland putting his own name up-front.
The Roland White Band’s debut album, "Jelly On My Tofu," was nominated for the "Best Bluegrass Album" Grammy in 2003. And plenty of fans of Roland's virtuosity, of the band, and of the best bluegrass music, will tell you that they just keep getting better.

The Fret House presents a special California edition of The Roland White Band, featuring the legendary Roland White on mandolin along with Roland White Band guitarist/vocalist Diane Bouska, and celebrated banjo player and vocalist Herb Pedersen, bassist Bill Bryson and fiddler Blaine Sprouse.
Roland began his career in California in 1954, leading younger brothers Eric and Clarence in The Country Boys, and later The Kentucky Colonels, a groundbreaking bluegrass band whose LP “Appalachian Swing” is considered a landmark recording in the history of bluegrass. Roland has been a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, Lester Flatt’s Nashville Grass, Country Gazette, two-time Grammy-winners Nashville Bluegrass Band, and since 2000 has led the Grammy-nominated Roland White Band.
Herb Pedersen, who cut his musical teeth playing banjo with California’s pioneering bluegrass group Vern & Ray in the 1960s and has since played with The Dillards, Old & In The Grey, The Foggy Mountain Boys (even subbing for Earl Scruggs), and was a founding member of the award-winning Desert Rose Band and Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Pedersen’s instrumental versatility (banjo, guitar, dobro), warm vocals, and talents as a songwriter (for example, “Wait A Minute”) and producing talents have led to extensive studio work with many important recording artists.
Bill Bryson, who played bass with Herb in both The Desert Rose Band and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, is also a member of Herb’s west coast group Loafer’s Glory, is another California bluegrass performer with a rich history in the music. He was an early member of The Bluegrass Cardinals, who were formed in southern California, along with the aforementioned bands, and has recorded with groups and artists as diverse as Rose Maddox and Ry Cooder. He has also been a member of southern California bands Bluegrass Etc. and The Grateful Dudes. Also a songwriter of some note; he composed the bluegrass classic “The Girl At The Crossroads Bar.”
Blaine Sprouse relocated to California from Nashville a few years ago, bringing with him a background as one of the most in demand session players in Music City. He has also performed and recorded with a virtual Who’s Who of bluegrass over the years, including stints with James Monroe, Bill Monroe himself, Jim and Jesse, and most memorably perhaps, The Osborne Brothers. Early in his career, Blaine was a protégé of the immortal Bluegrass Boy Kenny Baker, with whom he recorded a duet album, as well as three solo albums for Rounder.
Diane Bouska plays rhythm guitar and sings blues-flavored leads and bluegrass harmony. As a founding member of the Roland White Band, Diane has recorded and co-produced with Roland all of their projects, the 1994 Sugar Hill release “Trying To Get to You”, the Grammy-nominated “Jelly On My Tofu” of 2003, The New Kentucky Colonels’ “Live in Holland 1973″, and The Roland White Band’s current CD, “Straight-Ahead Bluegrass”. She also plays and teaches bluegrass banjo, has authored bluegrass mandolin and guitar instruction books, and teaches rhythm guitar at bluegrass workshops around the country.

For thirty years, Lee Ranaldo was the lead guitarist of Sonic Youth, one of the most influential and artistically sophisticated alternative rock bands of the recent era. Since the band's end in 2011, Ranaldo has been exploring new roles as a solo performer, leader of his new band The Dust, and beyond, to interdisciplinary collaborations in alternative venues like cathedrals and museums, often with his partner Leah Singer. Their recent live performances have been large-scale, multi-projection quadraphonic sound and cinema events. From performing on an electric guitar suspended from the ceiling and swinging over the audience, to rediscovering his love of acoustic folk music, Ranaldo's experimentalist spirit connects with music lovers across the spectrum, from classic rock to avant-garde.

8 pm BRAD COLERICK & MICHAEL McNEVIN play the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
Billboard Magazine called Brad Colerick “one of a baker’s dozen of acts to watch in the folk community around the world.” A finalist at Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, and Sisters Folk Festival songwriter competitions, Colerick’s songs have landed in the top 5 of both the Folk-DJ and Euro-Americana charts.
Michael McNevin grew up in a train town in the east bay hills of the San Fransisco Bay Area. His songs read like short stories, with a keen eye for detail. Accomplished guitar work and seasoned vocals underscore the characters and places he comes across in his travels. He is a winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, six-time winner of the “Song Of The Year” from the West Coast Songwriters, and a “Top 12 DIY Artist Of The Year” in The Performing Songwriter Magazine. He’s shared hall stages with Johnny Cash & The Carter Family, Donovan, Shawn Colvin, Utah Phillips, Christine Lavin, Richie Havens, and hundreds of others on the US songwriter circuit. He’s been a main-stager at the High Sierra, Strawberry, Kerrville, and Philadelphia music festivals.
When he’s not gigging, he owns and operates “The Mudpuddle Shop”, a converted 1920′s 15′x15′ barbershop in his hometown of Niles, in the SF East Bay hills of Fremont. Now it in it’s tenth year, the shop is a creative hive for concerts, swaps, jams, and songwriting workshops. He’s also an Etch A Sketch artist of some renown (not kidding) – he illustrates his lyrics, dumfounding audiences with the little red toy. His drawings hang proudly on the Mudpuddle Shop walls, waiting for an earthquake.

Press Quotes:
“I don’t know what’s best about ‘Sketch’ – Michael McNevin’s music or his Etch-A-Sketch drawings that accompany each song. McNevin is a singer songwriter of the highest order…” ~ Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
“Secondhand Story” is an evocative peek into a stranger’s life.” ~ Chicago Tribune.
“The talent of Michael McNevin lies in his ability to extract juicy bits of life from his surroundings and let a tale unravel from each one.” ~ The Performing Songwriter Magazine.
“…heard you on the KFOG acoustic Sunday morning show …bagging groceries and an Etch-A-Sketch. Two of my historical accomplishments — dig the tunes.” ~ Tony Bennett.
“McNevin, whose cynical-hopeful lyrics, and funky semi-cover of Paul Simon’s ‘The Boxer’ (with hysterical new lyrics and a new title, ‘The Taxer’) made him a crowd favorite at the High Sierra Music Festival. Jerry Burgan, co-founder of We Five, returns to the Fret House on Saturday, Nov 28. Joined by We Five’s lead singer,Debbie Burgan, and long time bassist, Tholow Chan, their musical roots trace back to the classic folk era of the early 60s before they rode the leading edge of the folk-rock with their hit recordings of You Were On My Mind and Get Together.
The Songs & Stories of Burgan and Chan bring audiences on a first-person joy ride though some of the most magical and memorable moments of their common musical experience– when folk songs topped the charts, Dylan hadn’t plugged in, and Lewynn Davis wasn’t even a glint in the Cohen Brothers’ eye.
Between songs, Jerry shares fascinating tales from his new book, Wounds to Bind – A Memoir of the Folk Rock Revolution, interwoven with the spirit of departed legends like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the Weavers, as well as the next wave of artists they inspired—like Jerry’s mentor and Americana pioneer, John Stewart.
Along with a the wealth of classic folk material drawn from seven We Five albums and Jerry’s solo CD, Reflections, Songs & Stories, you can count on hearing some of your favorite tunes—and a few surprises just for fun. Burgan and Chan’s rapport has a seamless quality that’s been honed by time and they draw each audience into the feel-good experience. When the three of them sing together, their tight arrangements bring to life the exhilarating power, harmony and charm that made folk trios so popular.
It’s an intimate, up close experience that puts you up front for a terrific folk concert with artists that made it happen. Don’t miss it.

8 pm MURIEL ANDERSON, stellar guitarist, plays the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
Award winning guitarist, composer, and harp guitarist Muriel Anderson is one of the few international touring guitarists equally at home with fingerstyle, bluegrass, classical, freeform, and international music. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed with jazz greats Les Paul and Victor Wooten and with classical orchestras. Her recent CD Nightlight-Daylight placed first in its category in 11 national awards, and is the first ever to incorporate interactive fiber optics. Founder of the renowned Muriel Anderson’s ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT®, she enjoys sharing her joy of music via her charity, the MUSIC-FOR-LIFE ALLIANCE.
Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez. Her gentle sense of humor and her facility across multiple genres of music is revered by guitarists worldwide.
