“If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having.” ― Henry Miller.

It's quite a musical weekend! There's an outdoor festival in San Diego, and a wonderful benefit, noon-6, also in that town. In L.A., you can watch the annual holiday boat parade from aboard a battleship, or go to the desert for the annual under-the-stars cowboy dinner-music-poetry-storytelling evening at the Indian museum. Plus the inimitable Kinky Friedman is in town for two nights, and there are multiple offerings of stellar bluegrass.
And Sunday, we hope you'll join us for the 34th annual Caroling for Shut-Ins with many bigtime music stars in the West SFV. All the details follow the weekend's live event listings.
And, oh, by the way: this Caroling is NOT some kind of fundamentalist religious thing. We sing the whole catalog of secular holiday songs, Hanukkah songs for the Jewish residents who request them, AND the repertoire of familiar Christmas Carols. And the stage show we do (multiple venues) in the dining halls? It's better'n anything on tv.
Join us. You'll thank yourself.

Sat, Dec 5, in the High Desert:
5-8 pm Annual “Holidays on the Homestead” brings chili, crafters, and cowboy songs at the Antelope Valley Indian Museum (a California State Park), 15701 E Avenue M, near Lake Los Angeles, east of Lancaster and Palmdale.
Looks like it will be great weather for enjoying chili by the fire.
It's an old-time country Christmas celebration. Originally a 1930s homestead, the museum's historic grounds will be decorated in vintage holiday style with live acoustic music around a campfire, a chili cook-off, tours of the grounds, a country craft boutique, real cowboy coffee brewed over the fire, and hot chocolate or cider for the kids. Explore the unique hand-built museum and whimsical grounds at night with soft lighting and the smell of fresh greenery, and the wintery sky sparkling over the desert.
Stay warm around the blazing bonfire while cowboy singer Michael Tcherkassky, “The Saddle Serenader” from the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, croons the romantic poetry about life on the range that cattlemen composed by day during their journeys across the old west, and was then shared around the campfire when the sun went down. Michael has performed traditional cowboy songs and poetry for many years at events around the country.
The country craft boutique features one-of-a-kind jewelry, pottery, and other handmade gifts. The crafters carry on the artistic spirit of Howard Arden Edwards, who built the Indian Museum to house his collection of American Indian artifacts. The Craftsman-style building is decorated with his colorful representations of Indian culture and creative hand-made furniture. This is a great opportunity to support local artists and find unique gifts.
Rose Edwards was known for her tasty rib-sticking chili and cornbread feasts at their holiday celebrations. Try Rose’s original 1930 Christmas chili recipe and the chili cook-off entries, complemented by delicious cornbread generously provided by The Lemon Leaf Café.
Event admission:
$10 for adults

Free for ages 5 and under.
This event is a fundraiser for the non-profit Friends of the Antelope Valley Indian Museum, which provides funding to help keep the museum open.

5 pm BERKLEY HART play Russ and Julie’s House Concerts series in Oak Park (Agoura Hills/Westlake Village area). Reservations get directions, at 818-707-2179 or rsvp@houseconcerts.us
This San Diego-based duo of performing songwriters is as good as it gets, and house concert pioneers Russ & Julie wrote the book on hosting guests for music.
R & J tell us, "To say they are back by popular demand is probably an understatement. They are one of our most requested repeat performers."
Berkley Hart have found something that works. The combination of Kerrville "New Folk Songwriter Award" winner Jeff Berkley and stand-out wordsmith Calman Hart creates a pairing that has become one of the premier acoustic duos touring the country. Every Berkley Hart show is packed with entertainment as the duo combines their natural down-home humor with poignant, delicate, masterfully crafted lyrics delivered with stunning harmony and musicianship.
Between songs, the obvious camaraderie between these two top songwriters shines as they effortlessly play-off each other in what can only be called genuine comedy. Add in virtuoso playing from both Jeff Berkley (guitar) and Calman Hart (guitar, harmonica) and it's easy to see why the two have become live favorites, and certainly favorites of Russ & Julie's House Concerts.
$20 per person "suggested donation" for the evening, payable in cash at the door, all goes to the performers. They will also have their usual potluck style coffee and dessert buffet.
Doors open at 7:30 pm. Reservations get directions at: rsvp@houseconcerts.us

7 pm SUSIE GLAZE & THE HILONESOME BAND play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001. Reservations, 626-798-6236.
This is a fine "beyond bluegrass" outfit. They'll tell you they have "been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk."
They are a lush newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. Winner of the "Just Plain Folks" 2006 Music Award for "Best Roots Album" for their debut CD "Blue Eyed Darlin'," The Hilonesome Band is Rob Carlson on lead guitar, Mark Indictor on fiddle, Susie Glaze on lead vocals, mountain dulcimer and guitar, Steve Rankin on mandolin and Fred Sanders on bass, showcasing the songwriting of lead guitarist Carlson.
The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, McCabe's Guitar Shop, The Broad Stage, the Hollywood Bowl, and Caltech Folk Music Society among others. Their most recent studio CD “White Swan” was released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from No Depression, FolkWorks, Pop Matters, M Magazine for Musicians, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others, and it has been charting in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report's Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart since its release in March of 2013.
Their new album "Not That Kind of Girl" produced by Herb Pedersen was released in June 2015. Bluegrass Unlimited states about the new album: “If there were a word to describe this fine band, it would be sophisticated. They draw influences from disparate sources to meld their sound. The level of musicianship is exemplary. Rob Carlson on guitar, Steve Rankin on mandolin, Fred Sanders on bass, and Mark Indictor on fiddle display a great range of prowess and work as a tight unit.”
Susie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album "Dear Jean - Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie" alongside such artists as Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Tim O'Brien, John McCutcheon, Robin and Linda Williams and many more.
From the Review of “White Swan” on No Depression: “From skilled instrumentation bluegrass jams, Appalachian vocals, sweet high lonesome harmonies and old-time folk influences, White Swan sings with the richness of a tapestry of American music that weaves together each genre through song-craft, clear production and authentic performance in such a seamless way, it feels like we're hearing just one genre; great American music.”
Here are snippets from their website...
√ "The best new band I've never heard of!" — Dan Crary.
√ "…one of the finest and most original Americana groups in California (or in the country for that matter).” — No Depression.
√ "…does something with a song that only great singers can do..." — KCSN, Northridge, CA.
√ "One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” — KPFK's FolkScene.
√ "Her singing is impressive at all ranges…" — Bluegrass Unlimited.
√ "The band is tight, great picking, and beautiful vocals and harmony." — KVMR, Nevada City, CA.
√ "She held the audience in the palm of her hand…." — Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival.

Sat, Dec 5, in Culver City:
8 pm PATCHY SANDERS plays Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583.
Whittled down, the name Patchy Sanders becomes a mythical muse, an unknown source of inspiration and beauty. Based out of Ashland Oregon, they are a six-piece: Danielle (banjo...) and Jacqui Aubert (vocal), Dan Sherrill (guitar...), Sara Wilbur (violin...), Ian Van Ornum (mandolin...), and Eric Jones (bass).
Working with ecclectic themes from dreams, fairy-tales, after-life, wild lands etc... Patchy crafts stream-of-conciousness story music with an emphasis on melody and lyrics. These aren’t songs as much as they are musical emotional experiences which conjure other worldly journeys. By and large their music fits as well in an acoustic art-house as it does in a farm house hootenanny hoe-down or main-stage at a pop festival.
Touring behind their debut record "& The Wild Peach Forest," Patchy’s momentum has been building during their extensive NW concert season in 2014. Notable festival appearances include, Kate Wolf Music Festival, Oregon Country Fair, The Britt, Beloved, Northwest String Summit, CA, Worldfest... They’ve also played historic venues in the Bay Area like the Great American Music Hall and The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse.
Seeking to broaden modern folk’s traditionalist approach, Patchy has new material in the works for 2015. Fresh original music bending towards avant-folk, with folk-orchestral arrangements blending diverse genres and musical styles. This is contemporary, independent, eclectic, eccentric, folk music which critics have been, with effort, trying to categorize. Like many things which remain hard to classify, Patchy Sanders’ music comes from their mythical muse, their unknown source of inspiration, and from here it will continue to flourish.
"Great musicianship, harmonies, and feel. A really warm vibe that makes wherever you are standing feel like the center of a Gypsy Caravan." ~Mason Jennings.

8 pm DAVID BRAGGER's CD RELEASE show with performances by old-time duo Howard Rains (TX) & Tricia Spencer (KS), Cajun Creole Joe Fontenot Trio, members of Sausage Grinder (Christopher Berry, Susan Platz & David Bragger), and an old-time jam session at 6 pm, at Timewarp Records Vintage Vinyl, 12204 Venice Bl, Los Angeles 90066; 310-636-8360.
David Bragger's debut CD, "Big Fancy," is on Tiki Parlour Recordings.
David Bragger is a Los Angeles-based old-time musician and instructor. He is also the curator of The Old-Time Tiki Parlour. David was an itinerant street magician, collector of South Asian folk tales and filmmaker following his graduation from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Religious Studies. After inheriting his great-uncle's fiddle, the obsession for old-time began. After years of visiting with old-time musicians including Mel Durham, Tom Sauber, Dan Gellert, Charlie Acuff, Benton Flippen, Clyde Davenport and Joe Thompson, David became a go-to-guru for learning old-time fiddle, banjo and mandolin. In addition to teaching, he has now started documenting the greatest living old-time musicians for future generations.
Tricia Spencer is a Kansas fiddler who grew up learning the tradition of old time music from her Grandparents. At an early age, she was perched up on some stage tapping her foot to the beat of fiddles, banjos, mandolins and guitars. While growing up, her free time was spent traveling to festivals and fiddling contests throughout the Midwest where she learned from the likes of Pete McMahan, Cyril Stinnet, Lymon Enloe, Dwight Lamb, Amos Chase, and Lucy Pierce. Tricia is multi-instrumentalist who has studied with some of the great masters in old time and is highly sought after as a performer, dance fiddler, and instructor.
Howard Rains is a native Texas artist and fiddler from a musical and artistic family whose two obsessions are painting and playing traditional American fiddle music. Howard plays rare, old tunes learned from friends, family, mentors, and old recordings. As much known for his painting as his fiddling, Howard has painted many of great old time musicians, both living and gone.

The Pasadena Folk Music Society tells us, "We have two of the finest voices in bluegrass teaming up with a great band and bringing a flock of outstanding songs with them. Stephen D. Winick of the Huffington Post wrote the following about their their tribute recording to Vern Williams and Ray Price:
'The disc's material reflects the eclectic repertoire of Vern & Ray's band, finding the sweet spot among traditional folk music, early country classics, and more modern compositions, with everything from [Stephen] Foster's Oh! Susanna and My Old Kentucky Home to the Carter Family's Cowboy Jack and My Clinch Mountain Home, and from folk tunes Black-Eyed Susie and Flying Cloud to Luther Riley's Bluegrass Style and Ray Park's Thinkin' of Home. Themes of home and love, wandering and worrying, and God and prayer come up again and again, presenting the American experience crystallized in country music. The festivities include multiple performances at senior care centers scheduled at concurrent time slots. Yes, we deploy parallel performing casts, to allow us to provide entertainment (read that as happiness and healing) to more needy senior residents AND their hardworking caregivers.
To balance-out the large talent pool and maximize your impact on the senior residents and caregivers, we’re continuing the tradition of forming two separate Holiday Caroling presentation teams that we call Santa’s South Route Caroling team and Santa’s North Route Caroling Team. BOTH teams feature professional musicians that include GRAMMY winners and nominees!
After you register with Vincent, he'll give you the web address to print-out the exact route, with locations and times. It can be very handy during your whirlwind performance schedule.
Whichever route / performing cast you join, you are invited to skedaddle over for the Group Photo at the conclusion, taken with all participants, at Meridian-West Hills in the main dining room, at 6833 Fallbrook Ave., Canoga Park 91307.
Then, it's off to the Post-Caroling Wrap Party to meet and eat and schmooze with your favorite musicians and new friends.
This really does run like clockwork, each year — an impressive feat, given that it's a bunch of musicians!

"If unable to attend, you’re encouraged to take your own group or individually visit your local senior centers or shut-ins. This simple act of kindness can make a difference and add true meaning for all involved this holiday season.
"Thank you for blessing my life and the lives of others. Happy Holidays!"

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California, in venues monumentally large and intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the roots of the blues and where the music is now.
