LATE ADDITION, Saturday morning:
A terrible tragedy. A young woman who sought success in music is attacked and killed.
"The Voice" singer Christina Grimmie has died after a gunman's attack at the Orlando concert venue where she had just performed.
Florida authorities said Grimmie, 22, was shot Friday night as she and band members were signing autographs. Her attacker, who had two guns, then fatally shot himself, after being tackled by the singer's brother.
Police credit the brother's quick action with saving others.
"The Voice" posted on social media:
"There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans and family of @TheRealGrimmie.
—The Voice (@NBCTheVoice) June 11, 2016"
Earlier Friday, Grimmie posted a message on Twitter inviting fans to her concert:
“Please come out,” she said.
"ORLANDO!! Come out to the show tonight at the Plaza Live! Starts at 7:30! pic.twitter.com/0D4mNupCTi

MUSICIANS NEED OUR HELP: DELIGHTFUL DUO TOTALLED BY DRUNK DRIVER IN CRASH
You know them from MOLLY'S REVENGE and their duo, THE FIRE. They are DAVID BREWER and REBECCA LOMNICKY and they're lucky to be alive. They were both burned and David's arm is injured. The link below has updates, but it's a site that won't let us copy the content to include it here. So we have his first report. And the link, so you can send a few bucks. And please do. It could've happened to any of us. It did happen to them, and they're good people.
From David:
"I like to stay upbeat on here, but I have to say I'm thankful to be alive--yesterday at this time, Rebecca Lomnicky and myself were crashed into head-on at high speed quite seriously by a drunk driver (whom was arrested)... My car (The Subaru, not the mighty green Geo) was completely totaled--we were both wearing seat belts and the airbags deployed and saved us, so the brave Subaru did its job...we were not completely unscathed however; quite scraped, burned, and twisted, but thankfully nothing seems broken or punctured. We are quite shaken up about it & so glad it wasn't worse-- we are just laying low and recovering today, but please do send good vibes--thanks! Thanks to Pete & Lynda Haworth for taking care of us in the aftermath.. Hope y'all are well... I'll be in touch soon."

MARLEY’S GHOST CELEBRATES 30th ANNIVERSARY WITH "THE WOODSTOCK SESSIONS," DUE JULY 15 ON SAGE ARTS
Produced by Grammy winner Larry Campbell at Levon Helm’s legendary Woodstock studio
By Cary Baker
(SEATTLE,WA) — Marley’s Ghost is the capable inheritor of the archetypal Americana blueprint drawn up by The Band. As the L.A. Weekly aptly put it, “This West Coast group deftly dashes across decades of American music to create a sound that’s steeped in tradition but never bogged down by traditionalism.”
A virtuoso aggregation composed of singer/multi-instrumentalists Dan Wheetman, Jon Wilcox, Mike Phelan, Ed Littlefield Jr., Jerry Fletcher, and Bob Nichols, this band can sing and play anything with spot-on feel, from roots to rock, blues to bluegrass, soulful gospel to stone country, which is what they’ve been doing — to the ongoing delight of a fervent cult that includes many of their fellow musicians — throughout their three decades as a working unit.
They celebrate their 30th anniversary this year with the release of "The Woodstock Sessions," helmed by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell.
Campbell connected with the band after working as a sideman on its previous recording, the scintillating roots-music tour de force, "Jubilee." That album, produced by legendary Nashville cat Cowboy Jack Clement and recorded at the city’s venerable Sound Emporium, also featured guest performances from Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Marty Stuart.
Known for his artful work with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others, Campbell guided the Ghost’s recent dig into its garden of deep roots to uncover a host of hidden gems. Featuring its trademark multi-part harmonies and multi-instrumental skills, the newest, and the band’s 11th album, is a resonant road trip through America’s past set firmly in the present.
For the recording, Campbell, a master musician of all things stringed and winner of an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award, brought Marley’s Ghost to the legendary Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, N.Y.
“Woodstock itself is a timeless old place and I think it influenced the vibe of the album as much as the choice of tunes,” says Wheetman.
He continues, “Larry saw in the band the deep connection we have with the world of traditional music and his excitement and passion for the music made the sessions come alive. He drew a lot out of us, made us dig deeper into ourselves musically.”
“In addition to his incredible musicianship on so many instruments, he has an amazing ability to recognize what he has to work with and use it to create magic,” adds Fletcher.
Wheetman concurs, saying, “Larry is the kind of producer who has a vision and the language to convey that vision to the artists . . . a producer who sees the strengths of the individual musicians and is able to pull that out of you when you weren’t aware of your own capabilities. As in all good projects, there was bonding of all the parts and that made this album a joy to record and perhaps our most honest project so far. I know when it’s right because I want to listen to it over and over.”
A “bonding of all the parts” could also well describe Marley’s Ghost itself, a unique amalgam of the band members’ respective backgrounds, personal proclivities, and musical abilities — a blend honed to a seamless collaboration over the many miles they’ve traveled together. Wheetman,Wilcox and Phelan first came together like bluegrass samurai during a fateful week of St. Patrick’s Day shows in the San Fernando Valley in March 1986. Wheetman was living with Wilcox, who brought along his friend, Phelan. The three clicked instantly. It was reggae-minded Wilcox who conjured up the name, with a nod to Charles Dickens.
They reprised the act a couple of months later at the first spring edition of the Strawberry Music Festival in 1986, just as the long-standing California folk music tradition was about to branch-out beyond the strictly traditional music the festival always featured. It was perfect for Marley’s Ghost. They mowed ‘em down at the breakfast show with their a cappella version of Dylan’s “Lay Down Your Weary Tune.”
That winter, Wheetman went to record his solo album at the invitation of his friend, Ed Littlefield Jr. (who’d built a recording studio on his remote Washington farm). He brought Wilcox and Phelan to sing with him on the sessions. Littlefield set up his gear with the band the first night they arrived, and the jam session went into the night.
“When I woke up the next morning,” says Phelan, “Eddie was in the band.”
A long and lively musical adventure thus began. In time, friends and kindred musical spirits Jerry Fletcher and Bob Nichols would follow suit. Three decades later they are all still standing and playing together with the same passion and chemistry that informed those early years.
The winning chemistry between Campbell and Ghost that defines "The Woodstock Sessions" has already set yet another recording project in motion — a gospel album, a genre beloved by both artist and producer.
Right now, the emphasis is on their July 15th release on the Sage Arts label, "The Woodstock Sessions."
“Larry’s work is informed by the deepest understanding and love of traditional American musical styles and feels,” says Wilcox. “His head is so full of music. He makes us trust and share in his vision of how good it can sound.”
What the press is saying about Marley’s Ghost:
“... remarkable, distinctive voices ... giddily eccentric eclecticism ... a heady, subversive treat.” — No Depression.
“Jubilee is a joyous record that more than earns its title ... Marley’s Ghost is a fantastic band who have themselves figured out.” — PopMatters.
“If there is a group, in the era after the sad passing of Levon Helm, who can push forward the ageless Americana blueprint of The Band, it might just be Marley’s Ghost.” — Something Else!
“The vocals will blow you away with their purity ... the group sings with the heartfelt conviction that only those who embody music’s spirituality can convey.” — Relix.
“The real draw is the band itself, showcasing the kind of ensemble performances that come only from a lifetime of playing together, thriving across the decades as virtuosic, unsung heroes of country, folk, and Western swing.” — Acoustic Guitar.
“... goes down smooth, rich and delectable.” — Los Angeles Daily News.

MERLE HAGGARD TRIBUTE BY BILL KIRCHEN & AUDIE DE LONE DUE AUGUST 26 ON RED HOUSE RECORDS —
LISTEN NOW! Stream their tribute to Merle Haggard, "The Hounds of the Bakersfield," on Popmatters now (link at end of article).
"Transatlanticana," the New Studio Album, Unites the Titan of the Telecaster with the Godfather of Pub Rock, Recorded in Austin, TX and London, UK with an all star cast
Tour and festival dates announced includes "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass" 2016.
Bill Kirchen and Austin de Lone team-up for a hands-across-the-Atlantic collection with their new studio album, "Transatlanticana," out August 26, 2016 on Red House Records.
This long-overdue release unites the pioneers of two major musical movements: Kirchen co-founded the original “Americana” band, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, and his trademark Telecaster licks drove their hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” into the Top 10 in 1972. De Lone dropped out of Harvard to start Eggs Over Easy, moving to London and recording with Jimi Hendrix’s producer/manager and The Animals’ bass player Chas Chandler in 1970.
The Eggs are the progenitors of British pub rock, the first link in the chain to punk rock, new wave and beyond. Backed by both their all-star British and American bands, Transatlanticana finds Kirchen and de Lone trading songwriting credits and lead vocals on this soulful and rocking collection.
They kick it off with the timely “Hounds of the Bakersfield,” a tribute to the late Merle Haggard and the Bakersfield sound.
Kirchen and de Lone cut the album in Austin and London, capturing on disc the best of their 30-year collaboration. Kirchen is Austin-based; de Lone is in the San Francisco Bay Area, but both artists have longtime ties with the UK scene: Kirchen has toured as a guitarist with Nick Lowe and put out three albums on UK label Proper Records; de Lone has toured as keyboard player for Lowe and Elvis Costello and put out his first solo album on UK label Demon Records.
They first collaborated in the mid-1970s, writing together as The Moonlighters: “We sent Nick Lowe a bunch of songs for Rockpile, but unbeknownst to us they had decided to break up,” Kirchen says. What de Lone got back was a letter from Lowe that began, “Dear hero o’ mine. There’s not many of us left…”
Lowe then offered to produce them in London, and the resulting Moonlighters album, "Rush Hour," came out in 1983 on the Edsel label.
Since then, Bill and Austin have teamed-up with with Lowe and Costello many times: de Lone has worked with Lowe, Paul Carrack and Costello on several tours and Kirchen held the guitar chair for Lowe’s critically acclaimed Impossible Bird disc and tour.
In 2008, Costello borrowed the title cut from Kirchen’s album "Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods" for his band name at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco featuring de Lone, Kirchen, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welsh and Jim Lauderdale.
The songs of Transatlanticana represent the core elements of Americana music – R&B, country, rock and even a gospel track. Butch Hancock duets his song “Oxblood” with Kirchen. It’s a meaty slice of Texas boogie recorded with the Austin contingent. “I guess they used to color concrete with ox blood; I thought it was just an old shoe polish color” says Kirchen.
Kirchen contributes “Wine, Wine, Wine,” quintessential Commander Cody, straight-up country sad from their first sessions in Ann Arbor ’67. (Fun fact: Bill and Iggy Pop graduated the same year, same class, from Ann Arbor High School.)
“Let’s Rock” is a vintage de Lone/Kirchen co-write featuring an easy, chugging groove and de Lone’s tasteful piano work.
“Somebody’s Goin’ Home” is a Blackie Farrell/Kirchen co-write. “I saw the Staple Singers for the first time in 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival, then had to wait 50 years ’til I saw Mavis again, when we both performed at the Salmon Arms Fest in Canada,” Kirchen recalls. “It is a nod to that great family, written as a gospel song without ‘The Gospel.’ ” It's also a poignant look at the certainty and mysteries of loss, in true gospel style.
De Lone contributes “Warm and Tender Love,” a track that showcases his deep love and understanding of rhythm and blues. “I loved all the great Memphis soul ballads, and all the fantastic singing that Percy Sledge did, so simple and so sweet.” It’s an understated, soulful vocal performance, intimate and personal.
“Already Walking” is a bittersweet pop song written by de Lone and his daughter Caroline de Lone, who sings harmony on the track’s catchy chorus. It’s about moving on and dealing with hard times, being “on the way back” from a loss.
Their ringing, rockified version of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They are A-Changin’” closes down the album with a bang -- it’s an anthemic, fresh take on a song you’ve heard a thousand times and somehow these guys infuse it with a singular power that comes from crazy talent, years spent playing together and a deep love of Dylan.
Kirchen: “I first saw him [Dylan] at my high school in Ann Arbor in ’63, then Newport Folk Festival in ’64 where he debuted "Mr. Tambourine Man." I went to Newport the next year and saw him ‘go electric’. I loved it. What I saw those two years at Newport, and all the wild music that came through Ann Arbor and Detroit pretty much ruined me for normal work.”
Spirited and served up with wit and humor, Transatlanticana is a gem — a ringside seat to these transatlantic sessions by a group of like-minded, top-of-their-game players enjoying each other’s musical company.
The cast of characters is formidable: Gurf Morlix, Butch Hancock, Rick Richards, David Carroll, Sarah Brown, Louise Kirchen (representing Texas); Bobby Black, Paul Revelli, Michael Godwin, André Moran and Caroline de Lone (representing Calilfornia) and Paul “Bassman” Riley and Malcolm Mills (representing the UK).
Transatlanticana shows with Audie de Lone and band launch this month, run into December, span the US and get to the UK. Here are three dates, including the only one in Southern California:
*** Sat, Jun 11 Kerrville Folk Fest - Quiet Valley Ranch.
*** Sun, Aug 28 - Santa Monica, CA - McCabe's Guitar Shop (Bill Kirchen & Audie de Lone duo show)
*** Fri-Sun Sep 30-Oct 02 - San Francisco, CA - "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass" festival.

TOTO Founding Member Releases Solo Album, "Someday / Somehow," out Today
June 10, 2016 – A founding member of the Grammy award winning rock band Toto, Steve Porcaro his first ever solo album today, titled "Someday / Somehow."
We've become accustomed to Americana and Folk-Americana music not only including, but enthusiastically embracing artists who were once considered mainstream rockers. That's been true for John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Crosby Stills & Nash, and many more. Now we'll see if it happens for Toto's Steve Porcaro.
Porcaro’s first album has been in the making since 1983. “Back to You” was being worked on by Toto in '83, and “More than I Can Take” is the most recent track he finished.
“I’ve always been writing and recording over the years, hoping to find homes for these songs with other artists,” Porcaro remarked. “Lately, I've been reminded repeatedly how short life is, and I think it’s finally sinking in and with the encouragement of my band, family and fans, I decided it was time to remove my excuses, throw down, let go and finish these songs the way I hear them.”
The album features Porcaro on lead vocals for seven tracks and Michael McDonald on “Swing Street,” and “Night Of Our Own.” Jamie Kimmett on “She’s So Sky,” and “Face Of A Girl,” Michael Sherwood on “Make Up,” and Mabvuto Carpenter on “Painting By Numbers.” Longtime collaborator Marc Bonilla along with fellow current Toto colleagues Steve Lukather, Lenny Castro and Shannon Forrest make appearances on the album, as well.
The thirteen track album features material Porcaro has been tinkering with for quite some time. “Back To You” was originally recorded with Toto back in 1983, but Porcaro will tell you he never got around to finishing it himself until last year.
That track features both of Steve’s departed brothers, Jeff and Mike.
The first single from the album, a track called “Ready Or Not,” is quite personal to Porcaro.
“Ready Or Not was written for my kids,” Porcaro adds. “The first verse describes the day my oldest, Heather, was born, but the song's a love letter to all my kids, and to anyone who travels with kids at home.”
An American keyboardist, songwriter and composer, Porcaro wrote or co-authored music on each of Toto's first six albums, with the exception of "Isolation." Most recently,he performed on the band's highly acclaimed 2015 album "Toto XIV," co-writing and singing lead on “The Little Things,” and “Bend.” The latter is featured on the Japan edition of that release. Porcaro continues to perform as a member of Toto. The band continues to play to sold-out audiences in Europe, the US, and Japan. Toto begins a new U.S. tour on August 12th.
Many top musicians are adept across styles and genres. Also known for his prolific session work, Steve co-wrote “Human Nature” on Michael Jackson’s Grammy-winning album "Thriller," solidifying his individual mark on the music industry. A sought-after session musician, Steve has worked extensively with music producer icons Quincy Jones and David Foster. He's played for many of music’s most successful artists, including Don Henley, YES, Elton John, Boz Scaggs, and many others. Highly respected for his film and television scores, Steve composed the music for the award-winning FX show "Justified," starring Timothy Olyphant.
Steve Porcaro’s touring career began at the age of 17 with Gary Wright, in support of Wright’s hit album, "The Dream Weaver," and then with Boz Scaggs along with the other original members of Toto, prior to that band’s 1977 inception. Steve’s older brothers, Mike Porcaro (bassist) and Jeff Porcaro (drummer), also members of Toto, were highly respected session musicians, and their father Joe Porcaro was one of the world’s most influential session percussionists and educators. In 2010, Steve toured with Toto when the decision was made to re-form the band in support of his brother Mike during Mike’s lengthy battle with ALS.
Along with his work on "Human Nature," Steve Porcaro performed other "Thriller" tracks including “Beat It” and “The Girl Is Mine,” and composed the song “For All Time,” which was included on the Thriller “25th Anniversary” Edition. A testament to his compositional influence, “Human Nature” has been covered and/or sampled by many artists including Miles Davis,Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, SWV, Nas, and Chris Brown.

HEY, ASSOCIATED PRESS: LET'S PICK SOME MORE "PRESUMPTIVE WINNERS"
In 1980, in one of the only such examples in history, the various competing entities of the American news media all took the same pledge. It was a vow to never again reveal results or otherwise predict the result of an election while polls were still open.
The media did that willingly to stave-off a move to enact legislation that would have PREVENTED them from prematurely "reporting" results or otherwise predicting them.
It came about because the result of several elections in many states had, in fact, been changed that year. While polls were still open west of the Mississippi, the media declared that Ronald Reagan had beaten incumbent President Jimmy Carter and independent challenger John Anderson. Whereupon, thousands — perhaps millions — who had not yet voted saw no point in bothering.
And dozens of "down-ballot" races for everything from Congress to state legislatures to judges to you-name-it suddenly defied expectations and different people were elected.
The media's pledge never to do it again held — for thirty-five and a half years. Until Monday night, when the AP suddenly broke it, and several national corporate mainstream media outlets jumped with a "me, too" report.
Did it change the outcome of elections in six states? Probably. Did it change the results in California? Almost certainly, if you look at a consistent polling margin of two points and compare that to a fifteen point margin in results. After the media essentially told supporters of one candidate not to bother to vote.
Election day Tuesday, there was widespread outrage. By Wednesday morning, it was turning to the latest ridicule of an increasingly distrusted media. There were editorials and countless stories and postings in alternative and social media sites. One was a satirical meme proclaiming that AP had declared the Golden State Warriors to be the presumptive champions of the NBA.
We had already prepared the following:
(SAN ANTONIO DE BEJAR — AP) After achieving a broken string of victories here for twelve days, it is clear that the presumptive winner in Texas is William Barret Travis.
"It is clear that we have already won and are stronger together," proclaimed a spokesperson known as "H," known her for a disconcerting cackling laugh. Nevertheless, we reported the "stronger together" theme earlier as definitive fact without the need to put it in quotes. Initially, it had the effect of rallying others.
That was before we called it for Travis late Monday night.
Upon hearing our report that victory had been declared, Col. Fannin turned his relief column around and headed back to Goliad. "It would be pointless for us to go out and do anything now, since it's all over, anyway," Fannin told AP.
He added, "I am surprised you knew to tell us this, though, with the campaign still going on. We had thought every single person mattered and would determine the outcome. But if it's over, it's over, and everybody should just stay home."
Essential in calling the contest for Travis was learning of his endorsements. They include the cutting presence of Jim Bowie, who was unavailable for comment. One report has him injured and in the hospital, but still part of the "stronger together" team.
Meanwhile, Texas got all the help it needed from Tennessee. Former Congressman David Crockett arrived with "Old Bess," his constant companion, and a group of experienced campaigners.
When everybody else in Tennessee gets here, that'll be more than enough to confirm AP’s call that this is over.
You can't deny the math. Still, Crockett said, "Best not count yer chikens afor they hatch, ner yer unarrived partisans neither."
From New York, where he can't possibly know what we know in Washington about developments in Bejar, the magnate of the Littlehands Hotel had a comment. "You can't trust Mexicans," he said, while eating a taco salad in the hotel restaurant. "Fannin should have built a wall. So should Sam Houston. Our leaders are stupid."
When asked how a wall across remote open spaces would be financed, Littlehands quipped, "The Mexicans should pay for it to protect them from the Chinese."
Meanwhile, near Bejar, General Lynch's cavalry under command of James Comey is said to be closing in. "Nobuddy has seen 'em, but we know theys out there," Crockett told AP. That brought a cackling laugh from "H." Bowie remained unavailable.
Tomorrow's dawn will mark the thirteenth day in the old mission. Correspondents are organizing a big victory party here in Bejar, so no one is with the presumptive victors, Travis, Bowie, and Crockett. But "H" assures us everyone is ready for the big victory party, and we can ignore Comey and get ready for a big blowout over in the Alamo.
__________
We wondered if we should do more digging. Perhaps AP had reported these:
"Napoleon Declared Presumptive Winner at Waterloo — Takes Afternoon Nap."
"Robert E. Lee conducts largest artillery barrage in North America's history — declared Presumptive Winner at Gettysburg; Pickett's Charge will seal the deal."
"Japanese Presumptive Winner at Midway with four aircraft carriers to two US carriers; you can't argue with the numbers."
And of course, there's that famous newspaper headline: "Dewey Defeats Truman."

SPOTLIGHT: McCABE'S CONCERTS & A SATURDAY GUITAR EVENT
McCabe's Guitar Shop, at 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497; www.mccabes.com, is a legendary den of tunefulness.
McCabe's has an eclectic weekend of music with blues pickers, harmony singers, funk jazz monsters, and good ol' singer songwriters. PLUS they have an in-store guitar event on Saturday. AND they've added a few new shows to their upcoming roster.
√ ROY BOOK BINDER and THE T SISTERS: Friday, Jun 10, 8 pm. This is a terrific co-bill featuring the old master and the young upstarts. It's a pairing with Piedmont blues picker (and Rev Gary Davis disciple) Roy Book Binder with Bay Area folk darlings The T Sisters, whom you may remember from their stint on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion."
Roy Book Binder has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down blues. Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis and Pink Anderson? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, and Bonnie Raitt? Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He's been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on "Fresh Air." He's also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen and others. When he brings his tour bus to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains with music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for all.
As if that weren't enough, the night's bill also includes The T Sisters. Born and raised in California, real-life sisters Erika, Rachel and Chloe embody harmony; they've been singing and writing music together since childhood, and it shows. Their sound represents a continuum of music, from traditional to pop influences, with moments of breathtaking a cappella to swells of energetic indie Americana, as evident on "Kindred Lines," their highly acclaimed debut album, produced by Laurie Lewis. They're a big deal up north.
√ CHARLIE HUNTER: Saturday, June 11, 8 pm. Sold out show with 7 string guitar monster Charlie Hunter who brings his funked-up jazz to McCabe's along with celebrated percussionist and long time collaborator Scott Amendola, and Kirk Knuffke on coronet.
√ DAN BERN Sunday the great Dan Bern -one of our favorite LA songwriters (who we can proudly say got his start here almost 20 years ago) returns for an all-too-rare appearance in our back room. A remarkably prolific songsmith, Dan Bern has released some two dozen studio albums, EPs, and live recordings since his first acclaimed Sony-distributed CD in 1997. Either fronting the prodigiously talented band Common Rotation or as a solo performer, he is comfortable and convincing, funny and topical, with an unassuming tip of the hat to the spirits of Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, and young Bob Dylan - all while sounding thoroughly original and 21st-century. His recordings have featured a host of artists ranging from Ani DiFranco to Emmylou Harris, and he's devoted entire albums to baseball ("Doubleheader"), politics ("My Country II"),and little kids ("2 Feet Tall"). His latest release is a full-length album called "Hoody," about which Dan says, "I feel it's a really strong record. I think it's got a lot of elements - old folk, classic country, British Invasion - but it all holds together. It's the culmination of what I've been aiming at for a long time, and also a jumping off point for everything I'm aiming to do next." Singer-songwriter (and sometimes McCabe's instructor) Paul Zollo opens the show.
NEW SHOWS ADDED at McCabes:
√ Judy Henske & Jerry Yester on August 12.
√ "an amazing evening" with Dave Alvin, Mary Gauthier, plus Rick Shea and Christy McWilson on August 19 (it'll sell-out FAST).

Friday, June 10, 8 pm. Tickets: $20 ROWAN BROTHERS-CHRIS & LORIN...beautiful harmonies, The modern day Everly Brothers with a splash of bluegrass. Solid music and stage craft with a seasoning of nostalgia. Good stories and a tight evening. Chris and Lorin Rowan were born and raised near Boston, Massachusetts where their more famous brother Peter was already making a name for himself in Earth Opera. All three brothers played in folk, bluegrass and pop bands. In the early ‘70s, through their brother’s connection, Chris and Lorin got hooked up with aspiring producer and instrumental wizard David Grisman. Before long, Chris and Lorin along with Grisman moved to “where it was happening” San Francisco, and they still reside there today. One of the brother’s first gigs in the Bay Area was opening for the Grateful Dead at the closing of the Fillmore West in 1971. Shortly thereafter Clive Davis (Columbia Records) and David Geffen (Asylum) got into a bidding war for the talented singer/songwriters. Davis won out and the band produced the lavish and much-neglected The Rowans Brothers album on Columbia (1972), (reissued in 2003 on Evangeline Recorded Works) which was produced by Grisman under the name of David Diadem. Musicians appearing on the album included drum legend Jim Keltner, Grisman, and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann. JIM STUBBLEFIELD & ERIC HANSEN - Guitar Duo California guitarist Jim Stubblefield and Florida-based guitarist Eric Hansen combine forces for a night of instrumental guitar duets. They will be performing original material from their various albums as well as a selection of cover material. JIM STUBBLEFIELD http://www.guitarraexotica.com/Well-known for his Latin-style acoustic guitar playing with the popular touring and recording group INCENDIO that he co-founded -- unveils a new solo recording, Encantado, demonstrating his versatility as a guitarist, composer and arranger. The album title derives from his appreciation of folklore and fantasy. While some of the tunes have the classic nuevo flamenco sound (“Puesta del Sol”), others offer hints and flavors of Arabic (“Beyond the Horizon”), Celtic (“Highland Dreams”), Middle Eastern (“Odyssey of Fire”), progressive-rock (“Phrygian Suite, Op. 1”), and neo-classical (“Terra e Sole”). In late 1999 Stubblefield co-founded the Latin guitar oriented world music group Incendio with bassist Liza Carbe and guitarist Jean-Pierre Durand. They soon became a best-selling recording act, a popular concert attraction, and a group whose albums hit the Billboard, NAV and CMJ charts. ERIC HANSEN Eric attended Florida Atlantic University where he studied Classical and Jazz guitar. He was the first guitarist to complete the Honors Performance Program at F.A.U. and graduated with academic honors in 1996. During his time in college, Eric also studied Flamenco and Latin American music with musicians from Spain and Peru. Across the Universe, a Beatles Journey was a departure from the Spanish guitar genre and featured original Classical guitar arrangements of the music of the Beatles. Having satisfied his contract with Neurodisc, Eric continued to display his versatility by releasing his fifth album, a Smooth Jazz endeavor entitled, 360 Blue which features collaborations with renowned soprano saxophone player, Marion Meadows as well as some of South Florida's finest musicians. IHaving come full circle this album returns to the Spanish guitar genre with an ideal blend of Flamenco, Jazz and Classical music combined with Latin and Middle Eastern percussion. This release also includes Eric's fiery rendition of the Eagles' tune, Hotel California which has been a crowd favorite since it was first performed. For photos & copy click on: http://www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm
Friday, June 17, 8 pm. Tickets: $18 (a bargain). I SEE HAWKS IN L. A. a fave at The Coffee Gallery Backstage and a well traveled star at all the venues around. With national star...TONY GILKYSON. “Southern California is a land of strange, dangerous and beautiful contrasts. A mountain lion prowls outside the tract home bedroom of a teenage girl while she talks, oblivious to its existence, on her cell phone. A rattlesnake slithers across an empty shopping mall parking lot on a hot summer night while the employees count up the days profit and turn out the lights. While paparazzi chase the latest talent free celebrity, a talented, literate bunch of soulful musicians create honest and wise roots music for the ages. I See Hawks are indeed one of California’s unique treasures.” – Dave Alvin “There is an overall joy that emanates from the Hawks’ music. Acoustic guitar progressions accentuate Celtic fiddle melodies on some songs while the melodies of others are carried by a rock guitar reminiscent of James Burton’s work with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The lyrics display a wry sense of the situation we find ourselves in while remaining hopeful about our future as a species. Other songs display an equally wry approach to the ups and downs of love. This is the music the 1960s counterculture was meant to produce in its brightest hours. The fact that it appears now some forty years later in a world arguably more hopeless is a sign of hope in itself. Despite the echoes of that lonesome whippoorwill, I See Hawks In LA wipes away those tears we are sometimes too blue to cry.” “I See Hawks In L.A. blend country and psychedelia with soaring three-part harmonies that leave the poseurs of alt-schmaltz dust choked. These guys are the house band for a revolution that isn’t over yet.” – Michael Simmons, High Times. http://www.iseehawks.com ABOUT TONY GILKYSON: Frank Goodman writes in PureMusic.com: "This is how it's supposed to be done. Call me old-fashioned, but for alternative country to sound good, you gots to play good. And Tony G. plays like a demon .... And he's way more than a great guitarist. He is in that select company that is operating with a deep tonal vocabulary, and a connection to the instrument that few ever know. When he bends a note, into another bent note, into another bent note, and it's all in tune and it's all in time, that's a guitar player. That's just part of it, of course; it has as much to do with his approach to harmony and pushing the country envelope, and sterling acoustic work....Tony's done way more than a host of more famous people. Ten years with X, played with Lone Justice, played on and produced a slew of great records. Like all the greatest players will tell you, it's about seeing them live." Tony Gilkyson was born in Hollywood to a highly musical family, and he's taken that heritage and made it his own. He's played and recorded with X, Lone Justice, Sam Phillips, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Dave Alvin, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, kd lang, Mike Stinson, and his sister Eliza. http://www.tonygilkyson.com "Gilkyson has always been known as a fine guitarist but now he can be recognized as an equally fine songwriter with an eye for the ironic and darkly humorous." --Los Angeles Times For photos & copy click on: http://www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm
Saturday, June 18, 7 pm. Tickets: $18. Bob Stane says: Back after two or three years. We do not know where they have been or what they have been doing but it must have been fun. Read the copy, below. They are been here for a couple of encore shows and they sell out and make great music. Fun, different, musical and the best of Gypsy Jazz and then some. Money back guarantee. A fine Saturday night extravaganza. The SWING RIOTS Quirktette are a group of Los Angeles-based traditional jazz musicians who specialize in that crossroad where early, string based jazz and traditional folk music intersect. We play a broad mix of early New Orleans jazz standards including songs sung in Creole French. We also play many of the well-known Gypsy Jazz standards recorded by the great Romany guitar and violin players of the 1920s & 30s but dig deeper, performing traditional eastern European folk melodies in a swing setting. It is not widely known that seminal jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt played eastern European folk melodies on banjo in the streets of northern Europe as a child or that Django and fellow Romany (Gypsy) jazz guitarists were fixtures, not just of early jazz clubs, but also playing traditional eastern European music in the Cabaret Russe nightclubs that sprang up in Paris and elsewhere after the Bolshevik revolution. With this rich tradition as a base, you will hear Swing Riots perform traditional Romany, Russian, Yiddish Klezmer and Romanian horas alongside some of the earliest American jazz & blues standards. Sunday, June 19, 7 pm. Tixs: $18.... THE McCARTHY FAMILY... their west coast tour. The McCarthy's (Tommy, Louise, Rose & Peadear) - Experience a rare night of traditional Irish music with a family of musicians, for whom this music is bred in the bone. Web Site Address: http://www.burren.com This is evident in the music they play and the ease with which they play together. Tommy (fiddle), was born in London to Irish parents, who had emigrated from the west of Ireland in the early 1950s. His father Tommy Sr. was a well known piper & concertina player from Co. Clare. Tommy grew up listening to traditional music & playing with all of the legendary Irish players who were living in London, including: Máirtín Byrnes, Raymond Roland, Roger Sherlock, Danny Meehan, Paddy Taylor & Bobby Casey. Tommy performed with his family throughout Ireland and the U.K. - including The Royal Albert Hall, London. Louise (Banjo & Accordion) from Galway, played with her father Denny & local fiddlers: Joe Morris & Jim O'Brien, flute player Joe Collins & friend Paddy Hession. In her late teens she broadened her musical horizons & became part of Galway's vibrant session scene. It was there that her banjo playing was influenced by Charlie Piggott. Tommy & Louise met in 1987 playing trad sessions in the Boston area & have continued to play together & with many notable musicians including The Chieftains & many more. Daughter Rose, plays fiddle like her father & nephew Peadear, plays uillean pipes like his grandfather. Both are talented musicians who have come a long way at such a young age. Last year, the four toured Australia playing shows in Melbourne, Sidney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide & Victoria, followed by a tour of New England in the fall of 2016.
