FESTIVALS THIS WEEKEND (ONE is FREE ON SUNDAY), Sat & Sun, Oct 22 & 23

Festivals are in here, as reported previously. Concerts, updated from previous editions, are in the NEXT section. following this one.
__________

A local (Sunday-only) fest first; a Northern Cal fest (running all weekend) follows...
__________

Sun, Oct 23:
4:30-8:30 pm "THE CLIMATE REVOLUTION TOUR" arrives in L.A. as a star-studded flagship event, with music by OZOMATLI, GABRIEL MAYERS, and the LA RIVER CHOIR, and speakers SHAILENE WOODLEY, ED BEGLEY JR., KENDRICK SAMPSON, GREG PALAST, FRANCES FISHER, YAHNE NDGO, NICHOLAS GONZALEZ, and JOSH FOX, at Levitt Pavilion in MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, Los Angeles 90057.

Celebrities, activists, and concerned citizens (who love a good dance party) join up as Academy Award-nominated director JOSH FOX brings his "Climate Revolution Tour" to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. In addition to the guest speakers and the concert, there's a screening of Josh Fox’s latest film, "HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD AND LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN’T CHANGE."

The focus of the Climate Revolution rallies is to inspire engagement and activism around climate change and "the intersectionality" of climate change and social justice, helping to arm people with information they need to protect and empower their communities.

The Climate Revolution Tour launched the week of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where hundreds of people came out to Vernon Park for the rally-concert-screening event. (Including all the pre-approved convention volunteers denied access because they were Bernie Sanders supporters.) Since then, thousands of people all over the United States and Europe have turned out to see this very important film and hear from the man who has gained his notoriety in the climate movement thanks to his exposure of the very real dangers of fracking in his movies "GASLAND" and "GASLAND 2."

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the extraction of natural gas from deep in the ground by blasting water and chemicals under extremely high pressure, and Fox’s crusade against the technology began when he was offered $100,000 by an energy company to let them explore for natural gas on his land in Northeast Pennsylvania. After doing his own research, he not only turned down the energy company, but he made it his mission to expose the technology for what it is, not cleaner alternative to oil and coal, but another dirty extraction process which comes with its own host of dangers and risks.

In direct contradiction of the First Amendment , DEIA SCHLOSBERG, the producer of "How to Let Go and Love," was arrested while documenting the shutdown of five major pipelines by environmental activists. She was there as press, and did not participate in the shutdown. She is currently being held in jail in Walhalla, North Dakota, and her footage has been confiscated. She is threatened with 45 years in prison.

“Journalism is not a crime, it is a responsibility,” says JOSH FOX on Schlosberg’s arrest. “The actions of the North Dakota police force are not just a violation of the climate, but a violation of the constitution.”

SHAILENE WOODLEY, who was also arrested recently in North Dakota while protecting the local water supply and protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, will speak about her experience and more at the Climate Revolution event on October 23. Preceding the rally, there will be a march in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline hosted by the American Indian Movement Los Angeles. The march will start at MacArthur Park and go from 6th Street to Olympic Boulevard, then to Alvarado Street, and it wiconclude back at the park just as the Climate Revolution rally kicks off. Co-hosting both the march and the rally is California for Progress, an organization that continues to give light to the important issues of our time with large-scale events meant to keep the public awake and involved.

Rita has a strong, vibrant, and heartfelt voice, which is backed by her fine guitar and occasional banjo. Sean's outstanding dobro and banjo sets off each song perfectly. In fact, this collection is the first to offer fans the chance to relive all of the sets in their entirety, including between-song banter by Redding, exactly as they were performed. Rounding-out the package is a poster, plus new liner notes from Los Angeles-based journalist Lynell George and box set co-producer Bill Bentley.

Sun, Oct 23:
2 pm THE JONES GANG plays the "CAMARILLO CAFÉ CONCERT SERIES" at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St, Camarillo 93010; http://camarillocafe.com; 805-814-9366. (Note the new DAYTIME schedule.) In their former incarnation as the band HOUSTON JONES, these guys attracted two of the biggest audiences ever in the 26 year history of this series. Reformed, with a minor lineup change, THE JONES GANG still delivers the same high-powered mix of blues, gospel, country, rock and Americana that made the original group one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed acts up and down the West Coast. The heart of THE JONES GANG sound is the amazing voice of lead singer-guitarist TRAVIS JONES. His mom was a gospel singer and Travis told bible stories to audiences of revivals and tent meetings as a child, so he refined his craft at an early age. Whether it’s his throaty growl in a down-and-dirty blues number or his angelic tenor delivering a beautiful ballad, wringing every ounce of emotion out of each note, Travis constantly has audiences in the palm of his hand. The same rocking rhythm section that made Houston Jones such an exciting act is at work here in THE JONES GANG with PETER TUCKER on drums and percussion, and one of the Bay Area’s most in-demand musicians, JOSH ZUCKER on bass and vocals. Those of you who were at our last concert were lucky enough to hear Josh playing with Dear John, Love Renee. Pianist/vocalist HENRY SALVIA and lead guitarist/vocalist SEAN ALLEN provide the sonic colors and musical flavors that round out the band’s distinctive Americana sound. More at: http://thejonesgang.com. Doors at 1:30 pm. $20 at the door.

Dance, gypsies, dance. Dance the buckles off your shoes. This is a ton of fun and they have been here several times. Always great. The band is led by Miamon Miller (violin/viola) and includes Cory Beers (cimbalom/tupan and Simeon Pillich (bass). These three musicians have blended their talents and expertise to form an ensemble that respects tradition and encourages creativity. Michael Lawson makes this a quartet. You will not sleep. No, it is not loud, just wonderful and unique. The Garlic Band will be joined by our special guest, Seattle’s Michael Lawson (accordion/vocals). For nearly four decades, Michael has honed a well-deserved reputation as an unparalleled stylist in genres ranging from Bulgarian folk music to swing standards. On a recent tour in Bulgaria, he was a featured soloist on national television. And as icing on the Garlic Band cake (not that we’d actually bake something so ridiculous), he’s a Pasadena native. Plus, this year's production moves to MacLeod Ale Brewing Co, 14741 Calvert St, Van Nuys 91411. The show is written, produced and directed by the multitalented Aedan MacDonnell of Celtic Rhythms, who is, among many other things in the arts community, a member of the Scottish Fiddlers. This year's show will be held in a Scottish brewery. Aedan tells us, "Enjoy a pint of freshly brewed ale as you listen to the stories, hear the music, and feel the breath of those long gone on the back of your neck. You're not too scared, are you? Good! Fear not, Alastair and Jenny of MacLeod Ale Brewing Co have promised to keep the ghoulies at bay so the music, dance and entertainment can commence." The Guide always strongly recommends this show. It's worthy of going on the road, and each year's fresh rendition gets only two performances. Tickets are now on sale. Aedan adds, "If you like, bring a picnic lunch or dinner, show up early and hang out. Or try out the food truck. From 1-5 pm, Bulls Eye Pub Fare will be on site, and from 6-9 there will be Charlie's Wieners." This show has sold-out, so don't take chances. # 6 Feature...

THE GUIDE'S READER VOTING IS NEARING AN END. WE NEED YOU (not asking for money) -- Help The Guide Make a Decision for the Future

We've had this up for three weeks now, and have been tallying the votes. We need YOURS.

After doing this for years, we're at a crossroads. We must decide whether to be primarily an EVENTS CALENDAR, or primarily a SOURCE OF MUSIC AND INDUSTRY NEWS. It's simply because we no longer have the time to credibly be both.

So we're asking you to determine which way we'll go. YOU decide, by sending-in your VOTE. (Yikes! An election where you actually DO make the difference -- and there's no awful choice with Gropegate and Olighawks dominating a corporate duopoly that blames messengers instead of considering what's in the messages -- oh, stop. We know. We're disgusted, too, and THAT's WHY WE NEED MUSIC & ART in our world!)

So, the future of the Guide. These calendar features -- the entire subject of this particular edition -- consume a tremendous amount of time, far more than is obvious to anyone who hasn't done this kind of thing. That's because EACH ONE must be written from an individual email. Sometimes we can work from a "look ahead" press release from a venue, and get multiple shows at one time. But more typically, we get news of ONE show at a time in ONE email from a band or an artist. Frankly, it crushes the life out of any creative person to perform the mundane and mechanical task of threshing the wheat from the inordinate amount of chaff, sometimes having to track-down something the sender forgot to include (like what time it starts and who's the opening act). And through it all, there's the whole thing of trying to keep our write-ups as interesting as we know the shows will be for anyone who goes.

It takes far more time to do a "calendar" edition than it does to do an actual NEWS FEATURES edition. Believe it or not, that's the truth.

Meanwhile, it has consumed SO MUCH time the last two or three weeks to prepare our calendar/events editions that it's been impossible to bring you the news. And boy, do we have a lot of news backed-up in our lil' sector of cyberia, bustin' at the seams to get out before too much of it goes stale.

In fact: Our NEWS file currently has 1,779 unpublished items in it. That's just since late August, a period of not even eight weeks. Yep, it's all music and music industry items, including press releases previewing upcoming albums, artist collaborations, projects for charity, who's playing on what film score or TV episode, news of various other special projects in the works, and all kinds o' things that we know will interest you. (If we can ever get to 'em.)

Plus, we have bunches of GEAR info, spec sheets and test results on new widgets and doodads and gewgaws and instruments, upcoming artist signature guitars and the like, mics, stage amp systems, new recording technology -- so much that it's psychologically taxing just to tell you that we have it but you haven't seen it.

You KNOW what we're talking about, because the Guide has been bringing you news features like that for years. In fact, if we had the resources, we could publish a DAILY music news edition. THAT's how much we receive, and it pours in on a daily basis.

It's way past time to say that it's inundating and overwhelming. We can't maintain the idea -- or the fantasy -- that we can do justice to all of it. We can't. If Folk-Americana brought-in more revenue, we could think of applying for a grant. But it doesn't, and sorry, but folkies are cheap.

We know that asking our readers for subscription funding to hire help seems like a good idea, but it would become a stressful rat-race that, inevitably, would take even more time away from what's needed to prepare and publish the next edition.

Other solutions, like publishing fewer editions, with more time to write and prepare each one? The internet is not kind to a monthly publication cycle. Cyberia has a short memory, and anything that lacks frequency and immediacy sees its readership collapse. For years, we published almost daily and watched our page views go up and up, off the charts. When we could no longer devote that much daily time, we went to twice a week, and saw those numbers fall by almost half. Now, we're publishing once a week, and we have actually rebuilt some of the lost readership -- and it's got to be because you are finding things here that you don't get elsewhere.

So that brings us to the question of just WHAT it is that you come here to find, and what you WANT and EXPECT to find here. Time to write and tell us:

"Should the Guide be a MUSIC NEWS publication OR an EVENTS JOURNAL?"

Send your vote to tiedtothetracks (at) hotmail.com

And thanks!
