✔ CAMPING: No.
✔ NOTE: Runs 10 am-5 pm.
✔ THE SCENE: L.A. is one of the few places anywhere that has such an impressive living history resource as this: a real WWII battleship with plenty of visitor and community-friendly programs. Running from 10 am to 5 pm, this festival is the latest in the year's most crowded weekend of music festivals. But it's arguably the only one that actually commemorates Memorial Day in terms of its original meaning -- along with the battleship itself and its interpretive displays and exhibits, the festival features a special full-scale replica of the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier," where guests can "pay their respects and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom." Plus, this festival offers something else the others can't -- the chance to roam around the self-guided tour circuit (interacting with knowledgeable docents) on a real, WWII battleship. Congresswoman Nanette Barragán will be the keynote speaker at the 10:30 am opening ceremony. In addition to the music, the free dockside festival features food trucks, assorted vendors, vintage military vehicles, re-enactors, a Sailor's Bar, and more. Self-guided ship tour admission is FREE for all veterans, reservists, retired military, and active duty military (with valid I.D.); all guests accompanying military personnel receive a discounted $11 general admission. Even at full-price, the shipboard experience is a must-do. For some, it feels like the Starship Enterprise or a pedestrian-only floating city. For others, it's a way to get a sense of how dad or grandpa or another ancestor lived, in the war he would never talk about. But visiting the Iowa is not a maudlin or somber experience -- it's filled with "Oh, wows." ✔ THE SCENE: Presenting FREE outdoor music all three days in the south-west borough of Montreal, an "Artisan Alley," and plenty that's tuneful, it's one of Canada's most massive and celebrated folk festivals, run by a not-for-profit organization. There's a full "youth festival" lineup and substantial program that supports it, along with the main lineup, a pair of Thursday night theme concerts, and other special musical events (see "2017 Lineup" section"). The Folk Fest sur le canal was founded in 2008 by Hello Darlin’ Productions and Hyperbole Music to showcase folk, roots, and bluegrass music at a summertime event. The inaugural Folk Fest on the canal was a one-day event that attracted approximately 500 festivalgoers. The Festival has since evolved into a five-day event, complete with free outdoor programming and ticketed indoor concerts. In 2016, the Folk Fest attracted more than 30,000 music fans. Over the years, the Folk Fest has brought in folk pioneers such as John Sebastian (The Lovin’ Spoonful), Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary), Tim O’Brien, Jim Kweskin, Tom Rush, Eric Andersen, and Roger McGuinn (The Byrds). Family and community have always been an important part of the Folk Fest sur le canal. Local musicians, both emerging and established, are always featured throughout the festival. In 2012, the Lhasa de Sela Youth stage was added, giving young folk musicians, dancers, and storytellers the chance to perform in a semi-professional environment. In 2013, the Folk Fest created the "Lhasa de Sela Youth Bursary for Excellence in Music" as a grant program to encourage young local musicians to pursue their dreams. The bursary has since been awarded to 10 deserving recipients. Organizers say, "The Folk Fest is sustained by the herculean effort of a crew of upwards of 100 volunteers from all labour segments. Volunteers come back year after year to relive this rewarding experience. It’s no wonder that the Folk Fest sur le canal is considered a fixture on the Quebec music scene and the most family-friendly music festival in town!"

Wed, Jun 21:
6th annual "MAKE MUSIC LOS ANGELES" (MMLA), "eleven hours of musical creativity," is FREE and the enormous local expression of "MAKE MUSIC DAY," a citywide festival; but it's much bigger than L.A. — It's grown to global proportions in a very short time from its start in one country in Europe. Now, it happens every June 21st (regardless of the day of the week) in MORE THAN 800 CITIES in 130 COUNTRIES around the world. Local info, http://makemusicla.org
✔ TIX: It's free, and the history of it pretty much mandates that it stays that way.
✔ CAMPING: Not specifically, and not allowed at the L.A. or Pasadena expressions of the day.
✔ THE SCENE: It all began in France, where busking can get you arrested. Seems that when France elected a musician — François Mitterrand — as their president, musicians assumed he would change that law. Well, he couldn't, but he compromised with his legislature, and they let him designate one day a year when making music outdoors, everywhere, would be legal. So ol' François chose the longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, as that one day. Obviously, no other country wanted to be left out of something that brings a spontaneous celebration of all-things tuneful, so the French "Fete de la Musique" became the world's "Make Music Day." Pasadena, California, was one of the first places in North America to adopt it; within a couple of years, L.A., not wanting to play second-fiddle to Pasadena, as it already must to the Rose Parade and Doo Dah Parade, adopted it, too. Once all the Chamber of Commerce types realized it draws a crowd? Uh-huh. Now you can find lots of organized, pre-approved "Make Music" events on indoor and outdoor stages and street corners and parks that blossom into performance spaces. When it takes to the streets, it's especially true to its origins in France. And yes, the Guide has been on top of this, as a backer, proponent, and participant, since the first one in Pasadena.
✔ NOTE 1: In Los Angeles (as in many "Make Music" cities and towns) applications are taken to play at recognized performance spaces and those include some prestigious venues! All the info to perform June 21st at any of many officially recognized places in L.A. is at: http://makemusicla.org
✔ NOTE 2: It's great to get registered so your friends can find you and come out and support you, and so you can brag (with verification) about having played the world's largest day of music-making. But it's part of the "Fete de la Musique" roots to just play, somewhere — "officially" or not.
✔ NOTE 3: It's a great excuse to pre-print some maps and hop on your bike, or if you're carrying an instrument, to roam the light rail lines that are not-quite-a-system, but will get you to many places where music is being made on the one special day. As for geographically compact expressions? It's not hard to plan a walking or bike route that'll let you take-in a dozen or more "venues." There's one of those compact beehives of "Make Music" downtown, and another one that's separately organized in Downey.
✔ NOTE 4: There are so many L.A. venues that we'll augment this as the date approaches. We'll start with what's happening at one of the first venues to publish its schedule AND to issue a participatory invitation to musicians — the Skirball Cultural Center & Museum, atop Sepulveda Pass.
✔ NOTE 5: At the Skirball, just off the 405 Freeway, 2701 N Sepulveda Bl, Los Angeles, CA 90049; 310-440-4500, "Make Music" runs Noon–5 pm, and admission for the day is FREE. That includes free admission to the Museum galleries, including their popular "Noah’s Ark at the Skirball™" (though you'll need to reserve your free tix in advance for that one, because of capacity. No reservations needed on the free day, June 21st, for anything else there.) Children must be accompanied by an adult. Now, the good stuff: they tell us, "Dance, sing, make art, and jam along at the Skirball’s celebration of 'Make Music Day,' a FREE festival of music... All ages and levels of musical experience welcome!"
✔ 2017 LINEUP:

Finally...

1) CHANGES IN FESTIVAL LINEUPS AND STAGE TIMES are common, especially as additional acts are booked. So, as Jim Hance cautions, "Refer to both the event websites and websites of your favorite artists appearing at the festivals prior to making your travel plans."

2) Please SEND US info on any festival we may have missed — if it's in one or more of the genres we cover — or write to us to correct any errors that appear in our listings. (And our thanks in advance for that!)

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
