Guide to ALL the Weekend Festivals, April 22 & 23 (and beyond!) - 2017

.
.
Yep, all of 'em happening this weekend. Then, a look ahead through the first week of May.

Now, we do have concurrent / separate editions that fully detail two of this weekend's biggest ones. When you get to one of those in here, you'll find a simple listing plus the url to read the complete Guide special edition (also updated today) with all the partic'lars for that event.

Got the rules straight? Great! Let's get started!

Oh, we do have one quick rule-breaker. It's not music, but it's waaay cool. Friday, April 21, 7-9 pm at Occidental College.

It's a presentation by heretic economist RICHARD WOLFF. Whose ideas you really do need to hear. The last time he was in town, he spoke at the same place. Now, that was an entire book and a very long election season ago. In the video link below -- and certainly if you come out to hear what he has to say about what is happening now -- he will give you the history, the hope and the evidence that there can be a better way.

Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlhFMa4t28A

Friday's new event is titled: "RICHARD WOLFF: BEYOND CAPITALISM TO ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY." It's sponsored by the L.A. Progressive.

If you were active in the Bernie Sanders campaign, this will resonate with you. If you were not involved there, consider this a chance to learn why so many of your friends were so passionate for the change Bernie advocated.

Basically, Wolff lays-out the only real hope we have for saving some kind of capitalism that will encourage entrepreneurialism and end the insanity of all the wealth going to the top and to the investors who have nothing whatever to do with the actual work that produces products and services.

Tix for Friday's event in Choi Auditorium at Occidental College, eagle Rock (L.A.):

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/richard-wolff-beyond-capitalism-to-economic-democracy-tickets-33361373767

It's $20 general, $8 seniors.

* THE SCENE: The world's oldest Renaissance faire returns with jousting knights, period costumes, handicraft shopping, and medieval cuisine. Eat, Drink & Be Merry, 10 am-7 pm, as you "Take a journey into a land of imagination, where jousting knights, regal ladies, saucy wenches and royal overseers all mix and mingle with you and your family. The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire is the world's oldest Renaissance fair. Hundreds of performers dressed in the costumes of Elizabethan times create a magical world of music, language and fun, with 14 stages of entertainment options ranging from knife throwers to improv troupes -- just outside of Pasadena. More than 150 artisans will be exhibiting and selling their original handcrafted items, including hand-blown glass creations, pottery, authentic clothing and weaponry. And don't miss out on the more than 100 types of food and drink available."
* NOTE: Special event days include (1) "Pirate Weekend," Apr 22 & 23, when you can dress as your inner pirate and enter the Costume Contest. (2) "Military Appreciation and Scouts Weekend," Apr 29 & 30. (3) "Time Traveler Weekend," May 6 & 7. (4) The new "RennCon™ Weekend," May 13 & 14. (5) Annual "Closing Day Parade," May 21.
* 2017 LINEUP:
Though there doesn't seem to be a master list: There's always a large variety of singing groups with acoustic musicians playing ancient melodies on traditional instruments, including some ancient instruments. Everything from lutes, hammered dulcimers, whistles and flutes to hurdy gurdies. Some melodies are familiar, like "Greensleeves," because it actually dates to that era. The wild card in the deck is Steam Powered Giraffe, known as "the singing musical automatons," playing only once: at 6 pm on May 13th for the new "RennCon™ Weekend."

"COACHELLA MUSIC FESTIVAL" at the Polo grounds in Indio, CA; www.coachella.com.
* TIX: $399.
* CAMPING: Yes.
* This is the second and final weekend of this mega-fest. There are some Americana acts and some folkish singer-songwriters — but they're sorta like needles in haystacks of everything else. And the presence of loud electronica here can send your shoulders up around your ears.
* THE SCENE: "Like a barometer always reading a temperature of awesome, the traditional kickoff to the summer festival season is dominated by Coachella. The glitz and glamour of Los Angeles migrates east to the Indio desert for back to back weekends of the biggest names in music. What started as a small electronic festival in the desert has transformed into a cultural touchstone for the festival season."

Apr 20-27, 2017: (Earth Day Weekend)
18th annual "NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL" at several venues, principally the Island Cinemas, 999 Newport Center Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92660; https://www.newportbeachfilmfest.com/
* TIX: separate tix for each event; see website.
* CAMPING: No.
* THE SCENE: Unlike most film fests, music, including live music performances, plays a big part at this one. We'll get to that after some basics. There's also an "Environmental Film Series" from Earth Day (Apr 22) through Apr 26. Orange County’s largest entertainment event will bring 350 films and nightly gala events to over 50,000 film fans. 2017’s spotlighted slate of Irish films has been greatly expanded, with 10 features and 14 shorts on the schedule — with several filmmakers set to attend. Over the past decade, nearly 60 Irish films have screened at the festival for more than 500,000 guests, making it a signature attraction that places a special emphasis on Irish cinema, cuisine and culture. MUSIC: The Newport Beach Film Festival’s "Music Film Series" "puts music center stage showcasing music videos, documentary, and narrative films propelled by music. Highlighting performances, historical headlines, struggling musicians and their unique stories this growing series explores the binding relationship that links music and film. Just as Orange County is a necessary stop for a touring band, our Music Series has found a devoted audience here in Newport Beach. Past highlights include Paul Simon’s journey to make the Graceland album in “Under African Skies,” 2012’s Sundance breakout “I Am Not a Hipster,” and “I Want My Name Back,” a documentary chronicling the rise and fall of the original members of the Sugar Hill Gang. In addition to our Music Film Series, the Festival is also proud to host our Music Video Program, a collection of music videos filmed for modern, original music."
* 2017 LINEUP:
The live music lineup is not listed. But this film will delight music fans:
"HORN FROM THE HEART: THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD STORY" screens twice: Fri, Apr 21 at 5:15 pm and Tue, Apr 25 at 2:30 pm.
