CLOSING Jun 18, 2017:
"RHYMES & REASONS: THE MUSIC OF JOHN DENVER" is the GRAMMY Museum's celebration of the life of the GRAMMY-winning singer, songwriter, actor, activist, and humanitarian. With this temporary exhibition, located on the Museum's fourth floor, the exhibit chronicles Denver’s life, philanthropy and creative inspirations through unique artifacts from the private collection of the John Denver estate.
* This truly celebrates the life of GRAMMY-winning singer, songwriter, actor, activist, environmentalist, and humanitarian JOHN DENVER, borrowing from the title of one of his best, if lesser-known songs, titled "Rhymes & Reasons."
* JOHN DENVER gained recognition when his song "Leaving On A Jet Plane" was recorded by PETER, PAUL & MARY, becoming their first and only No. 1 hit. He had already been chosen from 250 other hopefuls as lead singer for the popular CHAD MITCHELL TRIO.
* By his third album in 1970, Denver’s social and political leanings were clearly defined. Denver was one of the first artists to share an environmental message through his music, beginning with the TOM PAXTON-penned song “Whose Garden Was This?”
* He had a long line of songs that he recorded about the environment. Denver contributed his talents to the benefit of many charitable and environmental causes and received numerous civic and humanitarian awards over the years.
* Fans responded to his heartfelt urgings about ecology, peace, and compassion that were consistently delivered in a gentle manner on his records and at live performances.
* Many are surprised to learn that Denver earned his only GRAMMY Award in 1997 for "Best Musical Album for Children" for his album of train songs, "All Aboard!"

* In 1998, his hit song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame.

Not only an award-winning singer-songwriter, he was an actor, an environmentalist, a philanthropist, and a humanitarian. We... [are] paying tribute to his life and career here in Los Angeles — a place Denver once called home." - NWAKA ONWUSA, GRAMMY Museum Curator.

"FOR THE GOOD TIMES: THE ARTISTRY OF KRIS KRISTOFFERSOn" celebrates the life of the GRAMMY-winning singer, songwriter, actor and activist. Curated by the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Woody Guthrie Center, the exhibit is located on the GRAMMY Museum's fourth floor and chronicles Kristofferson’s extraordinary life through artifacts provided the Kris Kristofferson estate.
* His creative writing talents resulted in his being recognized as a Rhodes Scholar, and his study of literature, particularly poet William Blake, led to the call of songwriting.
* As a singer, songwriter, actor, and activist, the artistry of Kris Kristofferson is multifaceted.
* In 1961, Kristofferson joined the Army, serving as an Airborne Ranger and being assigned to teach literature at West Point.
* Many in late ‘60s Nashville thought Kristofferson’s lyrics were too poetic and unsingable.
* His independent nature strengthened his resolve to write songs that were thoughtful, sensual, and expressed raw emotion. His literary sensibilities were unmatched as they redefined country music and spoke for society’s disenfranchised.
* This outlaw poet’s work has been recorded by hundreds of artists, including AL GREEN, BOB DYLAN, JERRY LEE LEWIS, ELVIS PRESLEY, and JANIS JOPLIN.
* His performance in the film, "A Star is Born," gained him a "Golden Globe" for "Best Actor" in 1977.
* His songwriting artistry has garnered him numerous awards and accolades.
* Following in the footsteps of WOODY GUTHRIE, Kristofferson uses his voice to advocate for workers’ rights alongside the United Farm Workers, and he questioned U.S. involvement in Central America and Iraq. His ability to speak the truth through his artistry continues to challenge the political establishment and defend human rights.
* The exhibit includes:

REMEMBERING GREGG ALLMAN, WHO DIED MAY 27th
Gregg Allman is dead at age 69. Last year, the band's longtime member BUTCH TRUCKS died at age 69.
For music fans of a certain age, the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND is iconic. In fact, there's a joke about people who think there hasn't been a good album since "Eat a Peach," the Georgia-based band's February, 1972 double-vinyl classic. It was the final album that included the band's leader and founder Duane Allman, before he was killed in a motorcycle crash in the band's home of Macon in 1971, just after getting out of drug rehab. The band finished the album without him, with surviving brother Gregg taking the helm for years to come.
News of the time about the mega-talented Allman Brothers Band was rife with stories of heroin addictions and cycles of rehab. One wonders how different music history might have been had they focused their creativity and individual and collective talents and stayed alive to give more to the world.
Here's the "Recording Academy™ Statement Re: Gregg Allman," released May 27, 2017:
"As a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman helped give birth to Southern rock, blazing a trail for a generation of musicians who were equally influenced by the blues, Southern soul, and rock. His earthy vocals graced songs that have become rock standards, including "Midnight Rider" and "Whipping Post”, in addition to his own solo records. The band won a GRAMMY® Award in 1995 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Jessica," a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and their groundbreaking album At Fillmore East was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame® in 1999. We have lost a pioneering force in American music, and our condolences go out to Gregg's family, friends, colleagues, and music fans everywhere." -- Neil Portnow, President/CEO, Recording Academy

FESTIVALS this weekend
We've deleted the Saturday-only festivals. These are the ones you can still get to.
And really, it's like, gadzooks, FESTIVALS! Aside from the sea of smiles that's infectious because so many people are having such a good time hearing sooooo much music from such amazingly good artists? Festivals are tops with us because you get so much value for your bucks! A single day at a good festival costs as much -- or LESS -- than you'd pay to see a solo act at a big concert. Yet a festival offers exposure to a BUNCH of bands and artists, including ones you know and love, and ones who are about to become your latest discoveries and newest favorites for addition to your playlists.
Hmmm. Beyond the sunscreen, there are additional festival dimensions, aren't there?... Like.... Meeting interesting new people... People who are as into the music as you are... People you can plan to picnic with at upcoming concert-in-the-park freebies... People who'll want to hang-out with after a show at McCabes or the Coffee Gallery Backstage or Boulevard or the Fret House or the Hotel Cafe, and who might know good eateries that you haven't found yet near those venues... Looks like lotsa post-festival boxes get checked before summer even gets here, eh?

Wed, Jun 28: Not music, but interesting
7:30 am-11 am "FUTURE FORUM – ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & ROBOTICS" presented by CSU Dominguez Hills and sponsored by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, happens at ROW DTLA (thirty acres of historic buildings in the heart of Downtown L.A.), at 777 S Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90021; http://laedc.org/event/future-forums
* FUTURE FORUM explores the region’s Artificial Intelligence industry and jobs. As disruptive technologies continue to pervade society, they require people and organizations to adapt to new capabilities. Artificial Intelligence is already having a profound impact on our personal and working lives–and its impact will only increase in the future.
* "Much like the PC disrupted our lives in the 1980s, AI will lay the foundation for future decades of how we interact with technology, and how these new advents in technology will impact our everyday lives. More specifically, how will advanced manufacturing and machine learning affect our workforce in LA County? Will robots replace jobs, or complement and enhance existing roles in the various industries in the LA region? How will the benefits offered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI present opportunities for industries including airlines, manufacturing, smart buildings, smart homes, and oil and power?" Those questions and more will be addressed by an impressive lineup of speakers.
* Keynote speaker is MICHAEL KING, VP & General Manager, Global Education Industry, IBM. Panelists are DR. RANDALL W. HILL, Jr., Executive Director, USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies; and TODD HOLLOWAY, Director of Content Science & Algorithms, Netflix. Welcoming remarks by WILLIE J. HAGAN, Ph. D., President, California State University, Dominguez Hills; and BILL ALLEN, CEO, Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.
* The Guide is telling you about this because we absolutely do NOT like the directions being taken by the technocratic corporatocracy. For us humans trying to maintain a decent chance at life, being armed with knowledge is really the only way any of us stand a chance to change it.
* Tix (registration fee): General public $65; Student rate is $40. Register at: http://laedc.org/event/future-forums

* "Naughty, funny, dark and romantic... the off-Broadway hit by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman introduced American audiences to the Belgian singer-songwriter known as the 'Bob Dylan of France.'"
* Now, director Dan Fishbach and musical director Anthony Lucca bring it back. Marc Francoeur, Susan Kohler, Miyuki Miyagi and Michael Yapujian star in this powerful and bold theatrical experience that was a sensation when it opened off-Broadway in 1968. A prolific singer-songwriter, actor and director, Brel composed and performed literate, thoughtful and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following – initially in Belgium and France, and later throughout the world.
* This revue, conceived by Blau and Shuman FEATURES ENGLISH LYRICS and additional material by the pair and pays tribute to Brel's unique genius. In any language, his songs brim with flair, attitude and European sophistication, retaining their edgy vibe over half a century after they were written. While Brel is no longer either alive or living in Paris, his legendary vision of romance, humor and moral conviction endures. We're looking forward to this freshly revived production.

THE COMING SUMMER...
Contrary to appearances the last couple weeks, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But, that said... there is an irresistible bridge of tunefulness between the current weekends of festivals.
And we all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things. Along with 'purt near all the music news we bring you. So, we'll feature some select picks of concerts, etc., as we navigate the summer together.
__________
As always, you know that a whole lot more is coming soon — including fresh MUSIC NEWS, PREVIEWS & REVIEWS, and more additions to our massive guide to the MUSIC FESTIVALS of 2017.
Meantime, with all that's about to happen that we report in the foregoing? Go get tuneful!

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
