HAPPY Independence Day (and for our indie artist friends, "Independents Day"-!)

Whether you're barbecuein', giggin', listenenin', pickin' or jus' grinnin', please be FIRE SAFE, and watch the drunken dummies who don't care about anyone but themselves.

And please remember that pets are absolutely terrified of all the bangs and booms. (As are far too many military veterans for whom explosions did not mean anything pleasant.) So be mindful and minimize your impact, okay?

Now, don't think we were befuddled when we did listings for the 4th of July and all the flashes and bangs. Note that many events with fireworks shows happen this weekend, and you can find them on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday — making it possible to catch four consecutive nights of fireworks hoopla, if you're so inclined. We list events of that kind on all four dates.

ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY(s)!

MUSIC ON TV (& ONLINE) SPECIALS, JULY 5-11

Brace yourself: it's BANJO, July 5th

Last year, we were a big fan of something that's happily returning as an annual multi-day/night series. It'll feature FIVE performance-interviews, starting July 5th, all on "Watching the Hawks." First, who's on, which day, followed by the details.

* July 5, HUBBY JENKINS from THE CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS opens the show's annual music series, with banjo and a chat about roots-Americana music! (Learn about Hubby at http://www.hubbyjenkins.com)

* July 6, lovely singer-songwriter KRIS ANGEL performs on piano and vocals, backed by cello. Her interview gets into what it's like to be an NYC-based musician, and her performance includes her song "Built This House."

* July 7 brings acoustic and electric guitar from punk rock icon CJ RAMONE, who fronted THE RAMONES from '89-'96. He has a new solo album just out (his third), titled "American Beauty," on which he covers a TOM WAITS song.

* July 10 it's the all-girl band PASTEL FELT, one of LA Weekly's "top ten bands to watch in 2017," for which the "WTH" TV show's cast journeyed to L.A. to get the segment. In addition to performing, the band discusses the difference between L.A. bands and bands from everywhere else.

* July 11 is Colorado-based group THE FLOWBOTS. But don't run screaming when we tell you their very melodic music somehow still categorizes them as a hip hop outfit, because you need to learn about them. That's because they epitomize useful activism in the Denver community, bringing everything from ballet to children's art programs to their community. Quite an interview.

The show is "WATCHING THE HAWKS" which airs on TV and ONLINE, multiple times each day, five days a week. Reliably a "no BS" daily program that covers what mainstream media won't -- including runaway arms spending and central emphasis on militarism at all levels of too many nations' governments (especially ours), the highly informative show always brings plenty of charmingly useful and entertaining information, whether that's gements about space exploration (where we could be spending some of that money we waste on endless wars), or little triumphs amidst the challenges of the arts.

The lil' series, which they dub "WTH Strikes a Chord" (WTH for "Watching the Hawks") airs several times each day on RT America. Hosted by Tyrel Ventura, Tabetha Wallace, and Sean Stone, the on-air hosts are giddy about this chance to emphasize music as their deep dive into what's usually a smattering of coverage of the arts.

Catch each day's half-hour show (with multiple repeat airings) on cable, satellite, or in the simulcast online, at the following times each day (weekdays), all times PDT:

3 pm; 6:29 pm; 11:29 pm; with morning repeats of the previous day's show at 4:29 am, (some days at 7:30 am, check listings), and 9:29 am.

While you're there (on TV or online), look for "On Contact with Chris Hedges" (the Pulitzer-winning journalist who dives into stories that mainstream media's corporate sponsors will not allow). And for documentary buffs, they air DAILY documentaries in half-hour segments, many of them award-winners. And absolutely be sure to catch "Redacted Tonight" hosted by Lee Camp with his very capable gang of comics -- they skewer the bloviating peacocks in the news (including the media itself) better'n anybody. And you might like economist-magician-comic Max Keiser and his "Keiser Report," and the new host who's running "Boom Bust," since those are two of the only shows on TV that explain macroeconomics -- so clearly that you'll know exactly why you want to slap a bankster. And Peter Lavelle's "Cross Talk" always has a good panel. And there's "World's Apart" which challenges the American ethnocentricism that always gets us to that default militarism. Check it all out after you catch the WTH music specials. (Just don't get all distracted exploring and miss the music!)

ONLINE, it's www.rt.com, and note something:

Look at the esoteric top toolbar at the top of the page, and click your way in to the live broadcast from RT America. Otherwise you'll end up with other live programming in any of many languages from somewhere else in the world if you play bull in a china shop.

Or catch it on TV.

OUR SHORT 4TH OF JULY EDITORIAL

We are both relieved and thrilled to be able to report the above story on some well-conceived music performance-interviews on TV this week, both for what that is and for what it's not.

Too damn much of what TV presents under the guise of "patriotic 4th of July programming" is thinly-veiled glorification of military might. Sadly, it permeates all the way down to the announcers' scripts at the municipal fireworks show. We're talking patriotism as the marching band for pugilistic muscle-flexing, trotting out sterile euphemisms like "let's congratulate our heroes on their 14th multiple deployment" that "keeps us safe" or even "keeps America free." Apparently by continuously occupying somebody else's country and depriving them of their freedom and ability to determine their own national destiny.

We get even more phrases that distance us from some very basic realities. Things like "forward force deployment" and "showing a strong presence." All combine into attempts to make reality into a fantasy of impressive, desirable, and sexy technogadgets with "real time look down video monitoring" without getting into the purpose. And that purpose is, once all the BS is shoveled aside, all about a bunch of horrendously expensive, distractingly dazzling whizbang technology that goes bang in somebody else's night, and isn't about "oohs and ahhs" of fireworks displays.

Honoring our veterans -- too many of whom have returned home with lifelong wounds that do and don't leave visible scars -- is not the same thing as remaining unquestioning of the goals, aims, and policies that continue to make more damaged veterans and continue to deprive the American taxpayer of things that would advance our society for ourselves, our kids, and for a future that would make us competitive with the rest of the industrialized world. Because when it comes to high speed rail and wholesale conversion away from oil to clean energy, we sure as hell are not competitive when we talk about bringing coal mining jobs back to add to global greenhouse gases, while spending more money on military gew-gaws than all the other nations of the world, combined.

Fourth of July or not, being made to feel necessarily patriotic or not, THAT discussion cannot abate. In fact, in a nation that celebrates freedom of conscience, it must never be silenced. Or distracted. Or obfuscated. Or co-opted by Big Media to gratify their military-industrial-cybersecurity advertisers and stockholders. Or characterized as "unpatriotic."

TODAY'S FOURTH OF JULY EVENTS (Tuesday the 4th, excerpted from the June 30 edition)

A lil' FIREWORKS GUIDANCE...

There are over 100 fireworks shows in Southern California. Curiously, not all of them happen on July 4th. Some are on July 1st, 2nd or 3rd (see those days listings, above). Most "4th" events, whatever day they happen, feature canned music programs of trad and modern patriotic pop, supposedly timed to the fireworks. Some feature Sousa and rousing military march music. Some forsake tradition and subject fireworks audiences to garage band rock or something even more obnoxious.

We looked at trying to prepare a comprehensive guide for our readers. It's too complex and the required time was overwhelming, with questionable value for you. So we listed only a smattering -- like, about 28 of the fireworks-with-music events, from Saturday through Tuesday, with MOST of them today, Tuesday the 4th. If you don't wanna drive, we advise to check your local city hall website and see what your community is doing, and what night it happens.

WE HAVE FOUR "PICKS" FOR THE FOURTH:

(1) For those wanting the biggest bang, go to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. There is an all-day pseudo fest on the grounds, with kids bounce houses, loud pop/urban stuff emanating from radio-station-sponsored stages, and lots of food trucks. If you drive in and park on the golf course (same place as football game parking), that costs. If you want a ticket inside the Rose Bowl, that costs. It's how they pay for the fireworks show and hoopla which they call "Americafest." You can park free, a mile or two away on Pasadena residential streets, and walk in. Thousands do that. There is no charge to be on the grounds outside the Rose Bowl, and you'll see about 70% of the show in the skies above the Bowl. You can even position yourself to see (and photograph) the famous, huge neon Rose Bowl logo below the sky display — though outside the Bowl on that end, you may be tormented by the incessant banging on the pop stage that won't shut-up. If you can afford it, get a ticket inside the Rose Bowl. It comes with a seat and a full view and good sound for the program, featuring some live music on the field.

Our other thoughts for something innovative that won't get you trapped in traffic when it's over?

(2) Do the daytime (11 am-5 pm) event at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. (it's written-up in the day's events, just below.)

(3) Ride the light rail (Red / Purple Line) to Grand Park in downtown L.A. and enjoy the free festivities and fireworks show there (It's written-up with a link, below). Or,

(4) Find a hilltop and watch multiple shows' flashes from too far away to hear the booms. You can even drive to the top of Mt. Wilson for that experience, or do an afternoon up, night hike down (4.5 miles each way) to the top of 9,400-foot-high Mt. Baden Powell (park in the paved lot at Vincent Gap, about 10 miles west of Wrightwood, on Hwy 2).
___

Whatever you choose to do? Please be FIRE SAFE, and watch the drunken dummies who don't care about anyone but themselves. And please remember that pets are absolutely terrified of all the bangs and booms. (As are far too many military veterans for whom explosions did not mean anything pleasant.) So be mindful and minimize your impact, okay?

Born in the USA! Pacific Symphony is about to begin a new chapter, as the orchestra settles into its new summer home at the OC Fair and Event Center in the heart of Costa Mesa. The Symphony's very first SummerFest launches on July 4 in the Pacific Amphitheatre with a program featuring the heart-thumping, spine-tingling music of Bruce Springsteen, a 40th anniversary tribute to "Star Wars," a salute to the Armed Forces and a brilliant fireworks finale!
* This year, the program features a high-energy tribute to BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, “The Boss,” America’s most iconic singer-songwriter.
* The Guide attended this July 4th event a few years ago when it was an EAGLES tribute, and this is a highly recommended, well-done evening with a very full fireworks display.
* Main program: RICHARD KAUFMAN, conductor, PACIFIC SYMPHONY; plus MATT RYAN & THE AMERICAN DREAM, "a note-perfect and visually accurate recreation of a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band."
* The symphony performs a 40th anniversary tribute to "STAR WARS" with the iconic music of JOHN WILLIAMS.
* The Symphony's traditional salute to the U.S. Armed Forces and patriotic favorites closes with a brilliant fireworks finale.

Fri, Jul 7, 2017:
5:30 pm WESTERN STANDARD TIME performs the FREE, all-ages, summer concert series in Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, Los Angeles, CA.
* Don't expect a cowboy / western band. That's a stoic nope and a modern n'uh-uh.
* Western Standard Time has a longer name that appends the two words, "Ska Orchestra" — it's the world’s premier "Jamaican Jazz Orchestra" — and it's "DUKE ELLINGTON meets Jamaica: the big band jazz arrangements of the 1940s colliding with the sound of early Jamaica." So it's best discribed as a kind of innovative retro jazz — Jamaican jazz. And people are flocking to it, by the thousands.
* There are more than 20 world-class jazz musicians in a “standard” Western Standard Time performance.
* The band's featured performers include Grammy noms and winners, and some have performed on Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy television broadcasts, and/or played with international stars and on major motion picture soundtracks.
* Bring your favorite beverage and tasty snacks. Excepot no alcohol, and they mean it — the cops will bust you outta the clear blue.
* Bring a folding lawn or beach chair. If you sit on a blanket, you will not be able to see.
* Bring a jacket; nights still get chilly near even a small lake.
* Parking free is possible, but requires being innovative and walking several blocks.
* Best to ride the Red / Purple Line light rail to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station, and allow time to walk around the bottom end of the park, through the tunnel and into the side that's isolated by the elevated road; that's how you reach the band shell.

* JOHN YORK is a former member of the legendary Byrds, and currently touring with Barry McGuire. He has played with P.F. Sloan, The Mamas and the Papas, Dr. John, Johnny Rivers, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, The Sir Douglas Quintet, Nicky Hopkins, and Blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins.
* BILLY DARNELL played guitar for the Gene Clark Byrds, The Everly Brothers, Dr. John, Doug Kershaw, and Roger McGuinn.

As extensive as our recommendations are? That's really just a lil' rundown on bunches o' concerts, festivals and other events in California through the conclusion of the July 4th holiday.

There are HUNDREDS more FESTIVALS happening all over North America, and we describe 'em in the detail you need in the Guide's "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" at: http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-music-festival-guide-current.html

But that's it for our concert calendar. You just saw how massively inclusive it, and we just can't keep doing these things. So we're returning the emphasis to MUSIC NEWS, and as part of what we cover, reporting on some select events. And yes, we do maintain the "Encyclopedia Festivanica." But comprehensive day-by-day lists of everything good enough to recommend? We're bidding that bon voyage again, and this time that ship is really sailing.

= = = = = =

Okay, we lied a little. We ARE taking time here — temporarily — to include a select few things (recommendations) after July 4th.

(If the fireworks nuts don't burn Southern California to the ground, these are good places to go.)

JULY 20th... in any other country, if they had accomplished what the US did on July 20th, THIS would be a national holiday. It's the day in 1969 that humans first set foot on the Moon. It should be "National Space & Exploration Day," but the corporatists are too cheap to allow our government to declare any more holidays. They claim it costs them too much money in "lost productivity," even though consumer spending is through the roof on any holiday when the stores and amusement parks and eateries are open. We have always been BIG advocates of making July 20th a holiday. Really now, how many times have humans set foot on a world other than our own? Yeah. So today we'll think of you, Buzz Aldrin, and all your Apollo astronaut colleagues, and Buzz, of your continuing advocacy for returning to a robust space program that GOES somewhere! Ahead in the Guide...

THE COMING SUMMER...

We'll keep you updated on MUSIC NEWS, all the festivals that feature Folk-Americana and/or acoustic music, and we'll bring you plenty of feature stories on whose in the studio, who's collaborating or touring with who, and what they're working on. And we'll continue to bring you news of special events, along with some previews, reviews and select "picks" (the recommendations kind, not the kind you use on strings; we've never had any of those printed with our logo, though we would if someone wanted to sponsor that.)

That said... contrary to appearances the last month or so, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But there is SUCH an irresistible bridge of tunefulness from all the spring weekends of festivals until summer heat abates them, so we ARE doing full-blown music calendars through the end of the July 4th holiday.

We all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things.

Along with 'purt near everything else we bring you.

It certainly does seem like Big Corporate Media only promotes and reports on soundalike pop pablum with incongruously unnecessary vocal gymnastics... we don't do that, and we wouldn't cover that stuff even if they didn't.

But the point is, big corporate media just plain refuses things and then claims those things are "non-commercial." (Which might explain why cable news, exclusively sponsored by Big Pharma ads, is so bad.) Big media certainly refuses to cover real organic acoustic music made without loops of electrocution sound effects — from Frankenstein's lightning storm or wherever they find that annoying stuff.

So just hit the mute button on them and turn here. We cover all kinds 'o real acoustic music and offer plenty of links to hear it in our news and reviews features. And, yes, we'll feature some select picks of concerts, etc., as NEWS FEATURES, as we navigate the summer together.
__________

As always, we invite you to join us and to let us know what YOU are listening to, and what artists or bands just sent you swooning and need to be shared with others.

That's your part, so you'll know that a whole lot more is always coming soon — including fresh MUSIC NEWS, PREVIEWS & REVIEWS, and more additions to our massive guide to the MUSIC FESTIVALS of 2017.

Meantime, with everything happening through these festival-packed, arrival-of-summer weekends? Go get tuneful!

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
