Finally, we're back to publishing an edition where we got everything in here that we wanted to include. So we were ready to tell you that this edition marks a return to uhh, "normalcy" for the Guide. You might remember what we mean by that, based on what we always delivered... before our recent encounters with too many other priorities and being called upon unexpectedly by folks in need. So, yeah, we were ready for a celebratory sigh-of-relief and satisfied smile, because this edition IS a return to plenty of music news and coverage that gets back to spanning all of today's acoustic music scene... as well as features on events you can attend... and previews of upcoming tours and new releases... with musician profiles... and that ever-elusive word, "more."
Yep, all that IS here. But as good as it is, it's hard to feel celebratory, because of some of what's in the news of the big wide world.
To wit...
a) Another major hurricane, this one named Maria, just took-down the entire electrical grid for all of our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico. And if it seems crass to talk about utilities instead of human lives and suffering, it's really because we can all understand "no electricity," and the reports from the scene aren't all that informative yet, anyway.
b) The second major earthquake in two weeks just hit our neighbors to the south in Mexico. It struck September 20th, the anniversary day of the terrible quake that struck there in 1985. In fact, earlier in the day, a nationwide earthquake drill was held because it was the anniversary of the '85 Quake. Then, two hours later, the real thing happened. Again.
c) Fellow Californians are still recovering from devastating wildfires. And all Californians are aware that any report of any major earthquake, anywhere, could be us next time.
d) People in Texas and Florida are confronting how they will rebuild their lives after two separate major hurricanes flattened and flooded the southern corners of America's Gulf states.
e) And we all know that global climate change assures much more awaits us under the headings of damage, loss, suffering, and need for our national treasure to be diverted to rebuilding. (That is, of course, probably rebuilding right back in the same places that will be destroyed all over again). And, as long as the rich think they shouldn't pay taxes anymore, and a cadre of powerful politicians are fixated on "austerity," it's a sure bet that there won't be enough money to help disaster victims as fast as new disasters arrive. (But there will be money for "Disaster Capitalism" to privatize public assets for private corporate gain, as we saw after Katrina.) And an outcome of what that means is, we can throw-in the towel on everything we thought would characterize the 21st century as "the future." Because there won't be any money to go to Mars or build transcontinental high-speed rail, or regulate Big Pharma or Big Ag or any other part of the Big Corporatocracy that, more and more, sucks the financial lifeblood out of everything and channels it all to the entitled class of fat cats.
f) Our time, which is mostly characterized by stupid, pointless, hideously expensive and endless wars, seems to be spawning more of them.
g) If we weren't already wondering how we were going to ignore all those things so we could get all giddy talking about the arts and music? We were just clobbered, and this one feels personal. Word arrived at our intended press time -- word that we have all lost a real jewel of a human being. Her name is Mara Cantello, and if you didn't know her, you'll want to learn about what she did. So while we do not include reports on any of those other overwhelmingly awful points of sorrow or outrage, we DO include a feature to remember a late, great, truly wonderful person from whom we can all learn and take inspiration.
Thing is, there really IS a lot happening that is WELCOME and NEEDED GOOD NEWS in the world of performing arts and music – and gads, do we EVER need that now!
That's what this edition is about, and, doggone it, it's WHY we do this, in the face of sooooo much else that is sooooo in need of attention.
Let's get started!

THE WORLD HAS LOST MARA, SELFLESS PRESENCE BEHIND "MARA'S TENDER LOVING CHRISTMAS"
There just isn't another MARA CANTELLO out there, and we are all poorer as a result. L.A. musicians were just getting involved last year, as performers and as volunteers on the many, meticulously organized lines of food serving tables, and everyone was committing to return in 2017, to the astonishingly wonderful event she had produced every year, for decades, for an entire community.
In 2016, the Guide recruited volunteers for Mara, and we were among them, ourselves. That was because of the ripple-in-the-pond effect – thanks, specifically, to the magic this very special lady had worked on our friend, the incomparable musician DUANE THORIN. Now, MARA CANTELLO and Duane have both left the stage of Earthly existence. And as the inescapable result, all of us are, in the words of 13th century poet John Donne, "diminished" by their passing.
We just received the word at press time that Mara had left us and we were shocked. It came from STEVE LICATA, patriarch of the clan that gives us the brilliant music duo, THE LICATA BROTHERS. Steve's message is both informative and expressive of Mara, the special soul that has departed us. So we are sharing it with you as Steve wrote it, including the link at the end to the newspaper obituary.
Steve writes:
"Many of you may have met or known about a remarkable lady, Ms. Mara Cantelo of Joshua Tree, who passed away last week.
"I just received a phone call from her friend Shirley who worked at the local radio station but who was also one of the "lieutenants" for Mara's famous "Tender Loving Christmas" events for the past 34 years that served the entire Morongo Basin.
"Our family was so blessed to be able to participate for the three days around Christmas last year - thanks to our friend Duane Thorin getting to know about this wonderful event. The boys played music and our whole family helped out for three days as Mara and her all-volunteer army provided food (lots of it), fellowship, joy, entertainment and (for the kinds) many gifts and presents for well over 3,400 fellow souls that passed through the Yucca Valley Community Center.
"These days it is rare to see such selfless devotion, just to make a whole set of communities feel wanted, loved and united. It was a privilege to know her and help share her dream of community in the high desert.
"For those who can make it, there will be a celebration of Mara's life on Friday September 29 around 6:00 PM at the Yucca Valley Community Center. If you cannot attend please keep her n your prayers as a person who literally and directly made a difference in the lives of thousands of people.
"Here is the recent news story of her passing:
http://www.hidesertstar.com/news/article_2e3b9f6c-98d6-11e7-b9a9-33e78726be73.html
"Thanks,
- Steve Licata"
___
A quick closing word from the Guide. We were already making our December plans to accompany Mara to purchase the dozens of turkeys for this year's feast. We will share word of what will happen in 2017 when we know. But WHAT a legacy she has left us – a legacy that speaks and sings and instructs in volumes that we can all be part of a better way, a more loving and caring way. Thank you, Mara, for the opportunity to have known you, however briefly.

"FARM AID '17" RAISES MONEY FOR STRUGGLING FAMILY FARMS
Last weekend, dozens of prominent and accomplished artists joined WILLIE NELSON and his perennial star-studded cast for the return of "Farm Aid 2017" in Burgettstown, PA. You've got to feel good that there still ARE family farms in the face of corporacratic AgriBusiness, AND you've gotta feel good that musicians are (as always) the ones contributing their time and talent to help those in need.
AXS-TV broadcast it all, live, starting at 4 pm Pacific. It's a shame so few of us have AXS, it being a premium channel that a lot of providers don't even offer. Scramble to find a friend who has the channel, because it'll return for re-broadcast sometime. They marked their 4th consecutive year airing Farm Aid, and their second time broadcasting it live, and that deserves support, too.
This year's performers included the longtime mainstays of the event: WILLIE NELSON, NEIL YOUNG, JOHN MELLENCAMP, DAVE MATTHEWS with TIM REYNOLDS, as well as SHERYL CROW, THE AVETT BROTHERS, and other notable artists. The lineup also featured Jack JOHNSON, THE AVETT BROTHERS, NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS, MARGO PRICE, JAMEY JOHNSON, BLACKBERRY SMOKE, LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL, VALERIE JUNE, INSECTS VS ROBOTS, and BLACKWOOD QUARTET.
WILLIE NELSON, NEIL YOUNG and JOHN MELLENCAMP organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on the land during the 1980s Farm Crisis. Farm Aid, now in its 32nd year, has raised more than $50 million to help fund family farms. Farm Aid has expanded to become a food and farm festival that features HOMEGROWN food from family farmers and hands-on agrarian activities. Plus it continues to attract some of the most influential artists in music, who donate their performances to support and honor family farmers.
Just 'cause it's over, it, uhh, really isn't over. The need is still there. You can donate at:
https://give.farmaid.org/campaign/support-farm-aid-get-the-official-farm-aid-2017-poster/c133229
After all, if so many folks in music can lend a hand, that's a pretty good incentive (kick in the seat of the bib overalls) for the rest of us.

BLUEGRASS REPORT : STEVE GULLEY & NEW PINNACLE'S 3rd ALBUM, “TIME WON’T WAIT”
With strong roots in Bluegrass and Mountain Gospel music, the band’s roots music heritage gets a touch of the new and fresh, as Steve Gulley and New Pinnacle develop their signature sound with this album.
___
Nashville, TN (September 19, 2017). With each album since their first in 2015, STEVE GULLEY AND NEW PINNACLE have hit the ground running. Their two previous outings, both on Rural Rhythm Records, have produced multiple hit #1 radio-charted songs, including “Leaving Crazy Town,” “Aim High,” “Not Now,” together with critically acclaimed album reviews.
Produced by Gulley, "Time Won’t Wait" is et for an October 20th release as the group’s third album. It features the up-tempo hard drivin’ single “Drowned In Sorrow” written by Gulley and TIM STAFFORD. Gulley wrote or co-wrote five of the songs, including the first single / title cut, "Time Won't Wait." For that song Gulley's co-writer is once again his chief writing partner, Tim Stafford of the band BLUE HIGHWAY. Other key songs include a poignant ballad, "The Road Back To You", written by Grammy award winner CARL JACKSON, and the straight-ahead road song, "I'm Alright", written by JON WEISBERGER and Swedish musician-songwriter CHRISTOFFER OLSSON, who adds to the European presence in solid roots-Americana music. Gulley revisits his traditional country roots with his version of the RONNIE MILSAP classic, "I Can Almost See Houston from Here." Also included is an amazing break-neck paced instrumental called "G-Force," written by New Pinnacle mandolin player GARY ROBINSON, JR.
Gulley says, “This is our third recording project as a band, and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. I think the songs complement each other perfectly and, in turn, show the diversity and maturity of the band itself. I feel this album shows how much we've grown as a group, while still staying true to the things that help define our sound – emotion, drive, and intensity. I can't wait for everyone to hear this new collection of music."
Steve's lineup in New Pinnacle includes BRYAN TURNER (bass, vocals), GARY ROBINSON, JR. (mandolin), MATTHEW CRUBY (banjo, vocals) and special guest on the album, TIM CROUCH (Fiddle). STEVE GULLEY (guitar, vocals) runs the show. This new album, "TIME WON’T WAIT," builds on the band’s heritage of strong roots in Bluegrass and Mountain Gospel music and at the same time provides a new and fresh sound that further accents the Steve Gulley and New Pinnacle signature sound.
TRACKS:
1.Drowned In Sorrow (Tim Stafford, Steve Gulley)
2.Time Won't Wait (Steve Gulley, Tim Stafford)
3.You'll Cry For Me (Steve Gulley)
4.The Road Back To You (Carl Jackson)
5.I'm Alright (Christoffer Olsson, Jon Weisberger)
6.I Can Almost See Houston From Here (Ray Willis)
7.Congratulations Anyway (Jesse McReynolds, Jim McReynolds)
8.You Can't Help Who You Love (Steve Gulley, Tim Stafford)
9.Leaving Sounds Pretty Good To Me (Steve Gulley, Tim Stafford)
10.G – Force (Gary Robinson, Jr.)
11.Safe In His Arms (Gene Johnson, Val Johnson)
12.Hold Your Horses (Carl Jackson, Pam Gadd)
Steve Gulley and New Pinnacle are currently on tour. For more information go to Stevegulley.com.
TIME WON’T WAIT is exclusively distributed by the Orchard and will be available on iTunes, Amazon and whereever Bluegrass music is sold. D.J.’s can download the album on AirPlay Direct.

BATTLESHIP IOWA & AMERICAN RED CROSS TO TEAM-UP THIS SUNDAY FOR BLOOD DRIVE, OFFER REWARDS TO PARTICIPANTS
If you've ever wanted to visit the Battleship Iowa Museum, you can satisfy that craving and be a force for good this Sunday, September 24th.
The U.S.S. Iowa, now a thrilling place to visit and tour as an enormous, 887-foot-long museum ship, was built for World War II and saw service in all the world's major oceans. It even transported President Roosevelt to a key meeting with leaders of the Allied powers. Having seen action in naval combat, including being hit by kamikaze planes, her crew can tell you their ship is no stranger to calling on ordinary folks to perform heroic deeds for the good of all.
Now, on Sunday, the ship's modern "interpretive" crew are calling out to one and all with the message, "YOU CAN BE A HERO AND SAVE UP TO THREE LIVES!"
That's because the American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the Battleship Iowa Museum this Sunday.
A spokesperson for the ship says, "Don't miss your chance to give blood and save lives. For each person who donates blood, up to 3 lives can be saved."
The Iowa is offering some special incentives and rewards for all who perform that good deed. All on-site blood donors will receive a FREE admission to the Battleship IOWA Museum and a FREE haircut coupon from Sport Clips.

FREE "END OF SUMMER CONCERT" SEP 28: TERESA JAMES & THE RHYTHM TRAMPS
The 7th Annual FREE “End of Summer Concert Celebration” happens Thursday, September 28th, at 5 pm in Library Park at 1115 El Centro St, in South Pasadena, adjacent to the Farmers’ Market. It's easy to ride the Gold Line light rail to the South Pasadena Station, and it's only a few blocks' walk.
The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC), in partnership with the South Pasadena Public Library, Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, all collaborate to present this annual event.
This year's free concert features Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps. The band serves up a tasty mix of swamp, Texas Blues, and West Coast swing. The Guide caught them in Ojai this summer, and we give them a hearty endorsement.
Teresa James has performed live with such legendary artists as Levon Helm, Delbert McClinton, Eric Burdon, Marcia Ball, Tommy Castro, Big Al Anderson, Kirk Whalum, and many others. Her voice is featured on albums by Randy Newman, Eric Burdon, Tommy Castro, Bill Medley, and Walter Trout, among others. She has also sung for television and movie soundtracks. She and her band were featured in the Disney movie and soundtrack for "HOLES".
Originally from Houston, Texas, Teresa is based in Los Angeles where she has assembled a group of some of the top L.A.-based touring and session musicians in her band, The Rhythm Tramps. They have been working in Southern california and at blues festivals and clubs throughout the U.S. and Europe for many years.
The band has been a favorite on Delbert McClinton's "Sandy Beaches Blues Cruise" for the last 12 years.
Teresa has released 8 CDs. "COME ON HOME," released in August, 2012, still enjoys airplay on stations around the world. It stayed on the "Roots Radio Charts" for weeks, topping off at the #3 spot. It made many ‘best of’ lists for 2012, and received rave reviews from writers and DJs everywhere. Her most recent CD, "BONAFIDE," came out last year to further acclaim.
Teresa's band is an eclectic mix of Los Angeles based musicians who have worked with a wide range of artists, including Jimmy Reed, Eric Burdon, Jackson Browne, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, Was Not Was, Johnny Nash, and many, many others.
Bring a sand chair and a picnic dinner, but no alcohol. Or go early (or stay late) and explore the many eateries and pubs in charming little downtown South Pasadena. After all, the concert is free, so you'll still have a few bucks in your pocket.

* THE BARRELHOUSE WAILERS are a lot of why we picked this night to recommend. It happens Saturday, September 30. Tix are $5 advance, $ 8 at the door. Doors at 6, show at 7 pm.
THE BARRELHOUSE WAILERS serve-up their own take on Prohibition Era hot jazz and blues music of the 1920s and 1930s, but that's not all. They perform only on acoustic instruments "to retain the authentic sound of that period." The Wailers bring their passion and energy to the style, making it as fresh today as it was when it was the newest, hottest dance music, 90 years ago. They have been influenced by a cocktail of artists, past and present, like Bessie SMITH, ELLA FITZGERALD, ASYLUM STREET SPANKERS, GERSHWIN, SYDNEY BICHET, and BILLIE HOLIDAY, as well as Traditional New Orleans Jazz, Classic Blues, Country Blues and Jug Band sounds.
The band was founded in the spring of 2012 by guitarist WAYNE PHILIPP and singer KAREN PARKHOUSE, who wanted to perform the kind of pre-WWII jazz and blues they both love. The duo found like-minded musicians over the next few months, and after a few personnel shifts, cemented the current lineup. Featuring an ensemble of 6-8 musicians – you can't do this music with less – they first performed shows in January, 2013, and have been playing steadily around Ventura and Los Angeles ever since.
Plus, the same night...
* THE VELVETEEN BAND plays their album release party as part of the same multiband bill. Along with the BARRELHOUSE WAILERS, there are sets by THE JELLY, and LEE'S MENAGERIE.
THE VELVETEEN BAND is quite a notable outfit. They're described as "an eclectic musical side show which delivers a wonderland dreamscape," and we'll add, they look a lot like Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros while they're doing it. This outfit – a self-described "theatrical rock ensemble" – is set to capture the imagination. They feature puppets on vocals, a deranged mad scientist, and are led by a six-foot trumpet-playing rabbit named "the Baron Von Velveteen." Fans of Gogol Bordello, Aquabats, Danny Elfman, Weird Al Yankovic, They Might be Giants, and the Muppets will all be right at home during their set.

3 SONGS THAT BREAK MUSIC THEORY RULES – AND ARE BETTER FOR IT
by Dave Kusek
(From Disc Makers, the mastering and CD-production-run company)
* Sometimes going against common music theory rules ends-up being exactly what a song needs.
At first glance, it can feel like music theory is full of “rules.” Pick up any good theory textbook and you’ll find detailed descriptions of how to name, construct, and analyze scales, intervals, harmonies, chord progressions, compositional forms, and a lot more that can make any creative person’s eyes glaze over.
These descriptions are often communicated in such a way as to imply that there’s a “right” and a “wrong” way to write a song. However, this way of thinking just does not reflect the real world of music. Theory is a way to name things, not a set of rules to be followed, and can be a good starting point to help you get the sounds in your head onto paper. But it’s not the end all be all.
Music theory is really a practice of learning the “rules” so you can break them. As you’ll see here, there are countless examples in music where going against common music theory rules ends up being exactly what a song needs.
* Parallel perfect intervals: Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”
One of the most commonly broken rules in music theory is the avoidance of parallel perfect intervals.
If you have ever played a power chord, you have played a perfect interval. In classical theory, parallel perfect intervals are avoided because (among other reasons) they cause the individual voices to lose their independence, resulting in a thinner and even blocky sound.
You can hear this for yourself. Try playing a perfect fifth, perfect fourth, or a perfect octave, then follow it with another perfect interval and see how it sounds. Try it again and this time follow the perfect interval with something like a third. You’ll notice that the perfect interval sounds almost “at rest” or “comfortable” for your ear. Hanging around that too long can get boring, so classical composers used more dissonant major, minor, diminished, and augmented intervals to add movement within a piece.
However, if Chuck Berry had decided to follow these rules, the guitar parts for “Johnny B. Goode” and the slew of classic rock music that came afterward would have been lost to all of us.
Nowadays, just about all of rock and pop music depends on parallel perfect intervals.
* Playing the wrong chord: David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”
Another common rule in music theory is to play the correct chord qualities for each of the chords in a particular key. So, if you were playing in C Major, the diatonic chords (chords within the key) that you would build your progression from are C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, and Bdim.
Following this rule is a great starting point when looking for strong chord progressions. Diatonic chords will almost always sound good together, so you can put a decent chord progression together without much thought. But, this rule has been broken many times in the service of great songs.
David Bowie’s musical catalog is a great example of this. Consider the acoustic guitar breaks in “Space Oddity” (which is also in C major). The chords in these breaks are C, F, G and A. Notice it is not an A minor chord. Instead, Bowie intentionally plays the wrong chord quality – and it sounds AWESOME!
Just because you are playing the “wrong” chord quality doesn’t mean you’ve played the wrong chord: sometimes the wrong chord is exactly the right thing for the song.
* Playing in the wrong key: Rage Against the Machine’s “Fistful of Steel”
Finally, a typically unspoken rule in most tonal music is that you don’t play in the wrong key. The reasons for this are pretty obvious: playing in the wrong key can sound downright awful (we all know that cringy feeling when we hit a wrong note). However, there are some fantastic ways that even this rule has been broken.
A great example of this is the introduction of Rage Against the Machine’s Fistful of Steel. The song is basically in F# minor. However, half of the guitar part is made up of harmonies from G major. Juxtaposing F# minor against chords from G major is incredibly dissonant because G major has very little to do with F# minor.
As a result, the guitarist is essentially playing in the wrong key half of the time. And yet, the part totally works! Instead of just sounding harsh, it conveys the angst of the song very effectively.
It really goes to show you that anything goes in music and music theory.
All rules have their limits and are worth being broken sometimes – but breaking them is usually more effective when you know what the rules are in the first place and why they are there. Know the rules so you can intelligently break the rules, right?

LAURA CORTESE & THE DANCE CARDS' "CALIFORNIA CALLING" TOUR HITS L.A. OCT 29th
Album Release on Compass Records October 6; Four-Nation CD Tour Launched September 18th in Ireland; Radio Airplay Happening Now
by Christina Dunkley
“. . . close and complex harmonies and imaginative arrangements” — The Bluegrass Situation
“ . . .vocally superb . . . amazing talent with the fiddle” — Maverick
“There’s so much depth in this songwriting, and the songs fall into my most favorite category of songwriting: using traditional forms to subvert the tradition.” — No Depression
"a truly exciting and innovative quartet" — Craig Havighurst
"It's a beautiful album!"— Eve Blair, BBC Radio Ulster
"Great record! Made in Maine!" — Sara Willis, Maine Public Broadcasting
___
(Nashville, September 20) — Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards gave a buzzworthy performance at AmericanaFest last week including a collaboration with '80s icon Colin Hay on Cortese's song "Three Little Words." That drew words of praise — added to many, like the ones above — from Nashville-based music journalist Craig Havighurst, who called them "a truly exciting and innovative quartet."
Cutting her teeth as a sideman in Boston’s roots music scene, Laura Cortese forged a unique path through a pool rich in talent (due to a large population of Berklee School of Music graduates like herself) including stints as an instrumentalist with BAND OF HORSES, PETE SEEGER, ROSE COUSINS, JOCIE ADAMS (of THE LOW ANTHEM), and UNCLE EARL.
Her Compass Records debut, "CALIFORNIA CALLING," is the next step in her career as a frontwoman and bandleader — she and her DANCE CARDS (cellist VALERIE THOMPSON, fiddler JENNA MOYNIHAN, and bassist NATALIE BOHRN) break new ground with a bold and elegant new album, based in the lyrical rituals of folk music but exploring new territories of rhythm and sonics. With the support of SAM KASSIRER, album producer of folk-pop favorites like LAKE STREET DIVE and JOY KILLS SORROW, they’ve created something that’s simultaneously rowdy, delicate and cinematic. This is post-folk that seriously rocks.
The band's Compass Records debut and album release is October 6th, 2017.

MUSIC PROMOTES MENTAL HEALTH, SO HELP OUT FOR "WORLD ALZHEIMER’S MONTH"
Did you know that listening to music can help boost brain activity?
That means every one of us is uniquely positioned to get involved in promoting mental health, from the general to the specific, from combating depression to slowing the onset of Alzheimer's.
September, as it turns out, is "World Alzheimer’s Month." And that means more to more people these days than ever before in our society, since people are living longer at advanced ages, and many family members are suddenly faced with elder care issues they never expected to shoulder. The latter includes numerous musicians we know, whose lives have been turned upside down, sometimes having to abandon bands, recording projects, half-finished albums, tours, and facing the fact they can can no longer seek out-of-town bookings.
Big Ag and Big Pharma are both suspect in the advance of many diseases, due to the proliferation of genetically modified foods (GMOs), chemical pesticides, prescription drugs that are over-prescribed and that end-up in everyone's water supplies as chemical residues, and all that is before we consider the effects of electromagnetic radiation that is inescapable in this age of cell phonery and ubiquitous scanning that you don't even know is being automatically done in dozens of places you go every day.
Obviously, all that is far more than we can discuss here. So let's stick with one thing – Alzheimer’s.
Here in Southern California, "Betty's Foundation" offers many events that prominently feature live music in conjunction with their campaign to fight Alzheimer's. A 501(c)(3) non-profit that's a 100% volunteer family run organization, it's "inspired by our grandmother, Betty."
Their annual "Remember the Music" Festival is this weekend; see the end of this feature story for info. For information on all their programs (with and without live music) or to make a donation to their work, go to www.bettysfoundation.org
Next, we'll turn to the Simi Valley Cajun Music & Blues Festival Blogging Team for what they posted on Sep 14th. Here it is.
Alzheimer’s is a type of progressive dementia that affects memory, cognitive function, and behavior. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease with someone developing the disease every 66 seconds. Alzheimer’s is a destructive disease that doesn’t just affect those diagnosed. This disease can cause families serious financial and emotional burdens. To learn more about this devastating disease and to find out how you can help, participate in World Alzheimer’s Month this September.
What is World Alzheimer’s Month?
World Alzheimer’s Month was launched in September 2012 with the intent to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. World Alzheimer’s Month unites leaders, people suffering from dementia, medical professionals, and the media in order to generate recognition for Alzheimer’s as a legitimate health issue. September provides an opportunity for Alzheimer’s associations to gain credibility and recognition for the work they do. World Alzheimer’s Month sends a strong message to governments and policy makers and asks them to make positive changes in health care services worldwide.
How Can I Get Involved?
There are many ways to get involved this September. You can organize your own fundraising event, or participate in an event being hosted near you. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a popular event that takes place nationwide and raises awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Another way to get involved is to post on social media platforms and encourage friends and family to learn about the disease. As always, you can also donate to legitimate Alzheimer’s associations or research initiatives to show your support.
Get involved in World Alzheimer’s Month and help stop the spread of Alzheimer’s disease.
___
The Guide adds, making music is another way to fight Alzheimer's. Offer to perform at an old folk's home or senior center! If you want an appreciative audience when you play, you'll find one there, and you'll be helping the cause of mental health.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
