Plenty of artists who came to town for NAMM are still playing (or looking for) local gigs, so this edition continues to bring our readers (NAMM attendees or not) a list of our picks for the best live local music.

Or maybe you're here this time because you're desperate to escape the State of the Union -- whether that means the speech or the actual state of national disunity is up to you.

So, joining our picks for live music this week and beyond, we offer a bit o' music news and MOON NEWS that's timely now and jus' won't wait.

The "really big shew" of our usual monthly mondo-mega-huge music news edition will be along soon -- this edition isn't that, so this one is much shorter than that'll be. But there's still enough here, if you pursue the music links within, to keep you busy long enough to avoid the SOTU speech. ♪ A MOON like no one alive has ever seen -- TONIGHT (early tomorrow morning)


It's being called the "Super blue blood moon," and it's one of the rarest of celestial events that you can see with the naked eye. The term is an amalgamation of the names for three events that happen separately -- a blue moon, a super moon, and a blood moon -- and they combine early in this morning to create a moment not seen in the skies in more than 150 years.

This one is easy to describe, in terms of how to see it. Go outside and look at the Moon! Of course you need to time that foray properly. And if there are clouds or too much city light where you are, NASA is providing a live stream of the full event on their website.

The Guardian did a good job with this, so we'll quote: "A 'super blue blood moon' is the result of a blue moon -- the second full moon in a calendar month -- occurring at the same time as a super moon, when the moon is at perigee and about 14% brighter than usual, and a so-called blood moon -- the moment during a lunar eclipse when the moon, in the Earth’s shadow, takes on a reddish tint."

They also correctly reported, "The trifecta will take place on 31 January and will be best visible from the western hemisphere. The last time the three elements combined at the same time was in 1866."

NASA is excited because this eclipse, being closer than normal, affords scientists their best opportunity to observe what happens when the surface of the moon cools quickly.

“The whole character of the moon changes when we observe with a thermal camera during an eclipse,” said Paul Hayne of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder, as quoted in The Guardian. He continued, “In the dark, many familiar craters and other features can’t be seen, and the normally nondescript areas around some craters start to ‘glow’ because the rocks there are still warm.”

The eclipse will last about an hour and a quarter.

So, WHAT TIME do you go outside?

All of us on the West coast can start watching at 3:48 am PT. The best viewing will be between about 5:00 and 6:00 am local time, and the totality phase ends about 6:05 am. (If you're elsewhere reading this, the above links have specifics for watching from each US time zone, and for places in the Pacific Ocean region and Australia.)

And if you encounter interference and must settle for watching a glowing screen?

And, no, despite the mainstream media playing Chicken Little about absolutely everything, there really is NO connection between politics and this super special Blood Moon. So, no need to go all medieval and hocus-pocusey when a lunar or any kind of celestial event occurs.

♪ Wed. Morning, Jan 31, WSM Broadcasts / Webcasts MEL TILLIS' Memorial Service


Broadcast from Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday morning, WSM will expand the audience of friends, family and fans of country music great MEL TILLIS, as the music world gathers to celebrate his life, music and legacy.

Over the course of his six-decade career, he wrote some of country music's most enduring songs, recorded six No. 1 singles and was inducted into both the "Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame" and the "Country Music Hall of Fame."

Tillis, a singer, songwriter, comedian and businessman, died Nov. 19 at the age of 85. He was laid to rest during a private burial in late November.

The memorial at The Ryman is free and open to the public. It is slated to begin, in Tennessee, at 10 am, ending about 11:30 am, Central Time.

THE WEBCAST IS THEREFORE AT 7 AM, ENDING ABOUT 8:30 AM, PACIFIC TIME.

A number of artists are slated to perform Tillis' music during the program, including ALISON KRAUSS, JAMEY JOHNSON, RICKY SKAGGS, COLLIN RAYE, DARYLE SINGLETARY, LORRIE MORGAN, IRA DEAN, RAY STEVENS, PAM TILLIS, SONNY TILLIS and CARRIE TILLIS.

Tillis' band, THE STATESIDERS (named after his 1966 single "Stateside"), will accompany select performances, and former "Nashville Now" host RALPH EMERY will emcee.

Quite a live event for a dead guy. No disrespect intended, but the irony is too obvious.

♪ "BEST BLUEGRASS ALBUM" GRAMMY Goes to THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS


Group wins their first GRAMMY for their 2017 release "LAWS OF GRAVITY"

Yes, the 60th GRAMMY AWARDS went pretty much as we had foreseen in our special edition of the Guide. And of course, with only nine of the statuettes actually awarded during the TV broadcast, 'purt near all the ones in all the categories that Folk-Americana fans care about were awarded before the broadcast began its serial rap awards marathon by beginning with its excruciatingly overlong rap showcase.

That said, let's dwell on a happy moment.

THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS won for their January 2017 release "Laws Of Gravity," the first-ever Grammy Award for the band. The Stringdusters were all on hand in New York City to take home their award -- even if nobody could see it on TV. But if a New York City extravaganza dominated by an ever-growing number of rap and hip-hop awards categories seems a strange place to win the "Best Bluegrass Album" award, it didn't seem to affect the joy expressed by the band.

ANDY HALL (dobro), ANDY FALCO (guitar), CHRIS PANDOLFI (banjo), JEREMY GARRETT (fiddle), and TRAVIS BOOK (upright bass), released a statement expressing, "Winning this award was made even better by sharing the honor with RHONDA VINCENT."

"Cannot thank you all enough for being along for this ride!," said the band, in accepting during the part of early, pre-televised show when the few Folk and Americana GRAMMYs are awarded. A show which most of the world doesn't even know happens before the televised broadcast for the commercial pop and mostly "urban" categories.
The Stringdusters -- hailed for their incomparably tight yet improvisation-infused live shows -- are building on their growing fan base and momentum. They have won four International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards, and they had previously earned a "Best Country Instrumental" Grammy nomination in 2011 that contributed to their widespread critical acclaim.

This past Friday, the band announced the formation of their own new Tape Time Records label. But it isn't just a "house label for themselves. They announced the label's first signing, the acclaimed Americana group, HORSESHOES & HAND GRENADES.

The Stringdusters will resume their "Across The Great Divide" tour February 7 in Louisville, KY.

♪ MICK FLEETWOOD Spends GRAMMY Sunday at Morrison Hotel Gallery in NYC


With music's luminaries split between Southern california at the annual NAMM Show, and the 60th GRAMMY Awards in New York City, here's one side trip of note.

Turns out that Mick Fleetwood -- band founder, songwriter, drummer, and occasional vocalist from Fleetwood Mac -- is also an avid fan of music photography.

The band's members, honored together as Fleetwood Mac, received the MusiCares "Person of the Year" award on Saturday night at the organization's annual event, which, like this year's GRAMMYs, was in NYC.

During his trip to the Big Apple, Mick Fleetwood spent his Sunday afternoon with good friend, Morrison Hotel Gallery co-owner and founder, Peter Blachley. This was Fleetwood's first visit to the gallery's NYC location, and he and Blachley spent time talking, laughing and sharing stories while looking at some of the gallery's immense collection of archives from over 125 photographers.

The long-time friendship between Fleetwood and Blachley brought Morrison Hotel Gallery to "Fleetwood's General Store" in Maui, Hawaii, where a third gallery location opened in June of 2016, following the ones in NYC and Los Angeles.

Of course, the gallery's collection grew as a result, as Ken Bachor got photos of Fleetwood and Blachley going through the photo archives.

* PARADE at 9 am, features over 10 marching bands from all over Southern California, including the award-winning Banning Pilots Marching Band, plus the "501st Legion," known as "The World's Definitive Imperial Star Wars" endorsed by Disney and Lucasfilm Ltd.
* To show how far we've come? The co-Grand Marshalls of the Parade are both white -- ABC 7 Morning Anchor Team Leslie Sykes and Phillip Palmer -- and many of the key honorees are of Asian or other ethnic backgrounds.
* CULTURAL FAIRE: The event continues at the cultural faire on Center Street Promenade featuring food vendors, retail and information booths, a Black History Exhibit, a Youth Village (which will include a Youth Art Contest, an Anaheim Public Library Bookmobile, and a Health Village, offering free health screening and important health related information). * YES, THERE REALLY WAS A FLOOD AT THE VENUE, WITH AN AUDIENCE IN THE SEATS AND PERFORMERS ON THE STAGE. But the vessel has been re-floated.
* It was a night of history. On January 11th 2018, as the water came flooding into The Coffee Gallery Backstage, some of the finest artists in L.A. were on stage performing great American roots music for the 1st Anniversary show of "The Roadhouse Series." Little did anyone known, a busted water line on the avenue outside had caused water to rushed into the venue. As the first historic set was coming to an end and we drank the last of the musical waters, our Big Kahuna, Bob Stane, took to his canoe and, megaphone in hand, called out for evacuation, while the fire department broke down the doors. As a performer, writer, photographer, bestselling author, and songwriter, Paul Zollo described it on his Facebook page.
* Zollo wrote: "With Neil Rosengarden in the spirit of those valiant Titanic musicians, we would play till the end. We heard Bob Stane telling everyone to 'please evacuate now before you get electrocuted!' I yelled, in mid-song, 'Save yourself!' Something I so rarely say during a song. I loved how Neil Rosengarden - although we were going down with the ship quickly - played so beautifully! And he played the very last notes of the song “Whispering Hope” by The Band - as Bob Stane urged us to ‘STOP ALREADY!’"
* This was at the end of the first half of Terry Paul Roland's "Best of the Roadhouse" series, leaving Roland to say, "It was half of one of the best shows ever!"
* In the spirit of Americana determination and our ability to overcome articles, we will present 'The Best of The Roadhouse - Set Two: After the Flood.' What "boilerplate"? Who came up with that goofy term for basic essential informational stuff... geeez... soon as we take water from the tank, top-off the lubricators, and get beans from the Harvey House, we are sooo steamin' down the line, and tyin'-up someplace with good music!
