LATE ADDITIONS: (most recent is up-top)
* TUESDAY update: cowboy star & National Yodeling Champion SOURDOUGH SLIM and his wife are fine, and their home survived in Paradise, CA. As you know from news reports, essentially that entire town is in ashes as a result of the "Camp" fire, the largest in the history of California.
* We feel ourselves exhaling in relief for Sourdough and his loved ones. Same as we were able to do for the gurus of the house concert movement, our friends Russ & Julie -- their home in Oak Park survived the fires that burned from Thousand Oaks to the ocean at Malibu. BUT, we remain cognizant of the needs of so many others who have lost so much. In the next day or so, we'll publish a Guide to giving for fire disaster relief -- but don't wait, if you feel the urge to contribute now, it won't be difficult to find a responsible relief organization. And if you learn of any more BENEFIT CONCERTS, please let us know so we can inform others!
* Two MONDAY notes for you:
One is the annual "VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATION" that includes a Civil War re-enactment encampment, and unveiling of the new "Gold Star Families Memorial Monument," at the Reagan Presidential Library & Museum, 40 Presidential Dr, Simi Valley, CA 93065. The keynote speaker is the sole-surviving Medal of Honor US Marine from WWII. See our events listing for more.
SECOND is the online on-demand "DEMOCRACY NOW" Nov 12 program's feature with historic looks back at Emma Goldman, Eugene Debs, Jane Addams, "Honoring Antiwar Resisters on the 100th Anniv. of WWI’s End." Online at: https://www.democracynow.org/2018/11/12/emma_goldman_eugene_debs_jane_addams
* We have an added Sunday event for you, "ARMISTICE DAY CENTENNIAL: THE SOLDIER-POETS OF WORLD WAR I" with folksinger ROSS ALTMAN and poets SHERMAN PEARL and MICHAEL C. FORD and more, at Beyond Baroque in Venice, 7 pm. See listing for full description.
• RUSS & JULIE, hosts of the longest-running house concert series anywhere, checked-in to report their home was saved from the Woolsey Fire inferno by the bravery of firefighters. A house down the block was lost, and a dozen more in their community. They did have to cancel their house concert -- first cancellation ever in their 22 years, hosting 237 shows. They were still waiting for the evacuation order to be lifted so they could go home, but choking smoke is still an issue.
• The historic PARAMOUNT RANCH WESTERN MOVIE TOWN has burned down in the Woolsey Fire. It appears that only the church from HBO's "Westworld" survived. The historic movie town and surrounding groves of old California Black Oak trees was the longtime home of the TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL. The sad news was confirmed by multiple sources, including, in early afternoon on Saturday, by the National Park Service who administers the site. Video from KTLA Ch 5 shows the devastation, at:
https://ktla.com/2018/11/09/western-town-at-paramount-ranch-filming-location-since-1927-burned-in-woolsey-fire-nps/
• A Saturday, 7 pm "FIRE VICTIMS BENEFIT CONCERT" has been announced. See listings.
• A Sunday 4 pm CHAMBER ORCHESTRA concert is FREE and includes FREE dinner and reception with the musicians if you RSVP. See listings.

This has been one helluva week. Many calls to action will come from each disparate part of tragedy, and some may be heeded this time. That's up to each of us. But no soapbox here. You're probably trying to get away from those just now.
So...
If you were intending to head to Malibu or anywhere from the West San Fernando Valley to all points in Ventura County, check the traffic maps and phone ahead to the venue (or whatever other intended destination) before you go. Fire and smoke and the needs of firefighters to close some roads may dictate otherwise.
REMEMBERING THOSE FACING THE FIRES
RUSS & JULIE, the ever-delightful gurus of the house concert movement, were forced to evacuate their lovely home last night as monstrously huge flames devoured structures in Oak Park. We know they are safe where they are, in evacuation. If you attempt to contact them -- or to be in touch with anyone else who is facing, or has already experienced, evacuation -- bear in mind that evacuees are in extremis. For one thing, that means they are more concerned with keeping cel phone batteries alive for emergency messages than with taking dozens of calls from well-wishers.
So an email is best. Not simply to tell them that you are thinking of them, but to include your phone number in case they are without, or can no longer access, their devices where all their contacts are kept. That way your friends and loved ones can ask you for the help you're offering to provide.
__________
As for immediate impacts of the fires on the music scene...
1) We know that the concert with the HONEYSUCKLE POSSUMS in Newbury Park has been cancelled, beca7se of the fires and the massacre in Thousand Oaks.
2) "Because of the fires, the Veteran’s Benefit Concert scheduled for Sat., November 10th in Topanga Canyon has been postponed. We will let you know when the new date is announced. We hope all of you are faring well...Be safe out there!" -- Andy & Renee, who were the scheduled performers there.
We expect to receive similar word about other events as the day goes on. But we do not expect to be able to stay on top of each incoming bit of such information, or being able to notify you of each event cancellation, as they come in. Also, bear in mind that evacuees are unlikely to update websites or social media until things stabilize. So phone the venue before you try to attend anything.
Even if where you plan to go is away from the fires? As smoke from these apocalyptic fires spreads, hatches will be battened-down to protect health downwind. So check to see if you can get to those places, too.
___
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
Some folks will be in a position to perform support functions for firefighters. But call ahead to your local fire station before you drop off anything anywhere, to be certain you won't cause trouble by creating clutter or getting in the way. (Though cops never refuse big boxes of donuts, and firefighters might enjoy some ready-to-eat energy eats or sports drinks.)
Yesterday's urgent call for blood donors in the wake of the massacre at a Thousand Oaks music venue still maintains the point that blood is always needed and almost always in dangerously short supply.
Specific charities may be asking for basic items to distribute to evacuees. Things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, sunscreen, and clean towels and washcloths. Calls for clothing and more may soon follow.
Your local community-based charity may already be plugged-in, and the national charities like the Red Cross and Salvation Army can also take your call with your offer to help. Most will want money, since that allows them to buy whatever is needed NOW, and to get it locally in the right quantity to fit the assessed need. And being skilled at assessing need is a big part of this, and part of why they exist.
___
DOING MORE, AND NOT JUST DISAPPEARING WHEN THE NEED REMAINS
WHEN IT'S TIME TO ORGANIZE BENEFIT CONCERTS, The Guide will be there. So make sure YOU NOTIFY US to help recruit what is needed, from artists to perform, to informing other music & arts publications so they can recruit their readership as supporters, donors, and patrons at benefit events.
__________
MUSIC NEWS & EVENTS
EVENTS are below. We will return with the edition of MUSIC NEWS that we've been preparing since before all hell broke loose. Same goes for our next full edition of CONCERTS, FESTIVALS, FILM SCREENINGS, CLUB GIGS, and other EVENTS. But that may not be right away, with the exception of what we already have ready for this weekend, including VETERANS DAY EVENTS, we freely acknowledge that the larger world is swamping us just now.
VETERANS DAY and the other weekend events we have for you are right below. We will attempt to get back to add more as we become aware of more, if we can break away to include those additions. If we do, we'll mark each new item as a LATE ADDITION, and we'll add a new first line to this edition, saying we've done that.
___
So for, now, take care of one another. It bears remembering that in this whole, mixed-up crazy world, each of you is the only you the universe has.
