Note # A

SATURDAY MORNING, JAN 19th, LOOK UP IN THE SKY, AT 11:05 AM...

At 11:05 am Saturday, January 19, from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex (SLC) 6, the many failed attempts to get this thing off the ground are finally supposed to produce a launch of the BIGGEST rocket capable of being launched from the West Coast, and the third largest rocket in the world.

As it rides an enormous plume of flame into space, the "Delta IV Heavy" rocket may briefly be visible to the west from the Los Angeles area, paralleling the coast as it tracks southward. It should easily be seen from the Ventura-Santa Barbara coast, and even inland to the northern High Desert, unless clouds hose us. It is taking the Supersecret NROL-71 spy mission into a polar orbit. The satellite -- whatever it is -- is the size of the Hubble space telescope,  or put another way, the size of a city bus.

Now, if it leaves the ground on time at 11:05 am, it may be a minute and a half or so before the curvature of the Earth let's you see it. So be patient. And keep reading for the live video feed you can watch on your phone or tablet.

We covered the Space X launch of the Iridium-8 Mission aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket for you on a recent Friday. That one was quite exciting, launching the final 10 Iridium satellites into polar orbit and deploying them one-at-a-time, on camera, to complete the 75-satellite constellation. Those satellites provide L- band voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers, and integrated transceivers over the entire surface of the Earth.

THIS ONE is all cloak and dagger, except for the LAUNCH. They have no choice but to go-public, lest millions will see the spectacle and flood the 9-1-1 switchboards reporting an alien invasion.

We've been TRYING to get you outside at the correct moment to see this GIANT rocket since back when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog. But they keep finding reasons not to launch it. This time marks the longest delay between attempts. So they should have fixed everything by now. And replaced all the secret batteries that died sitting on the not-so-secret launch pad.

Whether or not you can go outside, here's a link that goes live at 10:45 am Saturday morning PST, a few minutes before the launch:

https://www.ulalaunch.com/missions/delta-iv-nrol-71

You can still read the GUIDE'S special-edition with the full feature story about the rocket and what it's carrying. That's at:

AFFECTED BY THE GOV SHUTDOWN? AFL-CIO COMMUNITY SERVICES CAN HELP

Here at ther Guide, we went looking for any kind of financial assistance available to government workers who are being forced to work without pay, or are furloughed indefinitely from their jobs. Plus, we wanted to know if contract employees who are locked-out of their jobs at government facilities are eligible for any help.

You probably know that January 11th was supposed to be a federal payday. And 800,000+ employees -- plus many thousands of contractors -- received pay stubs showing "zero" in the pay column.

This is not the place to get into the lunacy of why this is happening.

We are pleased to report that we did find mechanisms in place to help, established and operated by the AFL-CIO unions. Here's what we Yael Foa, National Community Engagement Coordinator, AFL-CIO, told us:

United Way, one of the AFL-CIO’s national partners, supports 2-1-1, a free nationwide information and referral line that helps people find local resources they may be eligible to obtain 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The 2-1-1 line can be accessed by phone or computer. A toll-free call to 2-1-1 connects you to a community resource specialist in your area who can put you in touch with local organizations that provide critical services, including:

•  Supplemental food and nutrition programs;

•  Shelter and housing options, and utilities assistance;

•  Employment and education opportunities;

•  Services for veterans; and

•  Health care and mental health services.

Call 2-1-1 and speak with a live, highly trained service professional in your area from any cell phone or landline. All calls are private and confidential, and assistance is available in multiple languages.

Or visit 211.org to locate organizations in your community that provide support and assistance to working families in their time of need.

To find a local United Way in your community and learn about potential additional resources, visit unitedway.org/find-your-united-way.

And if you know of a worker impacted by the shutdown, please share this with them as well.

In Solidarity,

Yael

Another reason to turn off the TV and play your six-string...

Just tag this one, from the "In-case-you-didn't-know-it-was-all-rigged" department:

The White House Counsel's office has advised all Cabinet Secretaries to have their agencies begin using the phrase, "Border crisis" at every opportunity. But not for the obvious reason you expect. It's because the administration's lawyer wants to create an avalanche of examples he can use in "legal citations" to "prove" that "the government" sees a border crisis.

Too bad it isn't the actual crisis 400,000+ federal government employees are living, because they are furloughed and can't go do their work.

Or the crisis an additional 400,000+ federal employees are experiencing because they must go to work or face criminal charges, even though they can't get paid.

Or the crisis being experienced by small business people who supply government offices that are now shuttered, or make their livings from serving the needs of tourists in and around National Parks, National Monuments, Civil War Battlefield Parks, and all the other places where tourists suddenly can't go because those places are unfunded and closed.

But it's okay to create an ersatz crisis by having everybody say there is one, and then quoting them because they said so. Yosarian would let-out that appreciative whistle at the elegantly simple and corrupt beauty of this "Catch 22."

Most recent update of EVENTS listed below: WEDNESDAY, Jan 16, 10:35 am.

A major NEWS EDITION will be along shortly, but this ain't it. We're all about EVENTS, this go-'round.

Let's get started!

_________________________________________________________________

We open with events that are ONGOING, but not necessarily through all of January. Some are DO-ABLE FOR JUST ANOTHER FEW DAYS...

We put that section up-top so you won't miss and kick yourself later. Then things happening this Saturday-only and this Sunday-only are presented by start time. And a dazzling array of MORE things happening after this weekend follow! Enjoy!

**** The Guide's TOP PICK ****
Daily, but only through Jan. 13:
10 am-6:30 pm -- "KING TUT: TREASURES OF THE GOLDEN PHARAOH" at The California Science Center in Exposition Park, 39th and Figueroa, L.A., CA.
*  Okay, the Science Center is CLOSED New Year’s Day. NEVERTHELESS, this needs to be number-one on your list for 2019.
*  This is THE GUIDE'S TOP PICK FOR HOW TO START THE NEW YEAR. And you've got until JANUARY 13th to do it. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition!
*  It's been extended from the scheduled closing date (Jan. 6th) through a final day of January 13, 2019, along with extended closing hours.
*  NON-FLASH personal use PHOTOGRAPHY is allowed.; videography is not allowed inside of the exhibit, and selfie sticks, tripods, and monopods are not permitted inside the exhibit.
*  Now through the final day (Jan. 13), the last ticket time is 5 pm, and the exhibition closes 90 minutes after that. All other Science Center exhibits also close at 5 pm. But seriously, go in the morning and make no other plans for the rest of the day.
*  Space Shuttle Endeavour admission is included with your KING TUT or IMAX ticket (Endeavour closes at 5 pm). Take your ticket to the Endeavour queue on the 2nd floor for that admission.
*  To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, the California Science Center proudly presents the world premiere of "KING TUT: TREASURES OF THE GOLDEN PHARAOH" – the largest King Tut exhibition ever toured.
*  You won't simply see what's there. You'll find yourself incapable of suppressing the stream of "WOWS!" As you discover over 150 authentic artifacts from King Tut’s celebrated tomb. Sixty of them have never traveled outside of Egypt, until now.
*  It's not just a "come-and-see" "lookey here what we brung you" series of displays. This is a thoroughly interpretive, often interactive dramatic new presentation.
*  There are dazzling multimedia aspects, lighting, backgrounds, and extensive backlit labels you can't stop yourself from reading.
*  It all complements rare and utterly unique artifacts  to take guests on an immersive journey of the pharaoh’s quest for immortality.
*  You can examine the things you've seen Zahi Hawass describe on TV. Things like the exquisite rings found on King Tut’s fingers, opulent jewelry that adorned his body, and the gold sandals placed on his feet upon burial.
*  Discover how the scientific analysis of King Tut’s 3,300-year-old mummy has revealed new information about his health and lineage, and how cutting-edge technologies have played a role in discovering new tombs and analyzing existing ones in ways never before imagined.
*  Audio Guide rentals are offered in English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin, and worth the extra cost.
*  The Imax theatre film, "Mysteries of Egypt," is also a fine addition. But the must-do is simply to allow yourself as many hours as it takes to savor your face-to-face encounters, examinations, and contemplations with the artifacts.
*  NOTE there is NO re-entry into the KING TUT exhibit after leaving, so visit the restroom and don't start out hungry. In your favor? The exhibit is divided into two parts, and you do exit the first part (which is probably 80% of the exhibition) before you enter the second part. That's when to eat lunch and/or see "Endeavor" or find "the facilities."
*  The California Science Center does not provide personal property storage, holding, or check in, and backpacks must be small and worn in-front. You'll appreciate that you don't get clobbered when somebody else turns around.
*  Parking and traffic? Skip traffic and Go Metro. Take the Expo Line directly to Expo Park/USC Station and walk less than five minutes through the Rose Garden.
*  GET TICKETS IN ADVANCE (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, to be sure you'll get in, and to avoid a long line at the box office): https://californiasciencecenter.org/visit/admission/king-tut-admissions
*  More info, including late additions:  https://californiasciencecenter.org/exhibits/king-tut-treasures-of-the-golden-pharaoh

Runs through April 21:
10 am-5 pm - "POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION" at the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Dr, Simi Valley, CA, 93065
* Go back in time with this spectacular exhibit to relive the lost world of Ancient Rome. Pompeii was a playground, the Las Vegas of its time. Until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius encased all of it -- including its people -- in a deep layer of volcanic ash that fell from the sky like a deadly blizzard.
* When rediscovery of Pompeii came accidentally in the digging of a well, a period ensued of raiding the buried city for treasure. Then, in large measure because of the greedy raiding, much of what became modern archaeology developed to document, understand, and protect the integrity of the lost civilization.
*  This awe-inspiring exhibition features nearly 200 artifacts hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until rediscovered over 250 years ago. "Pompeii: The Exhibition" includes frescoes, mosaics, gladiator helmets, armor, weapons, plates, furniture, jewelry, statues, and more.
*  Plaster casts of people who were buried alive in the ash are included -- the ash encased them, and their presence literally left a void that could be reclaimed by wet plaster.
* A 4-D eruption theater is key interpretive element, allowing visitors to experience the deathly impact Mount Vesuvius had on this ancient city.
*  Make plans to see this while it's here.
* The Reagan library offers over 125,000 square feet of exhibits, so allow a minimum of three to four hours to enjoy all of the galleries and grounds; yes, they do have food.
* TIX to the library through Apr 21 INCLUDE "Pompeii." Save the box office waiting line by buying online -- but you must select the date and time you would like to visit.
General Admission$29; Seniors (age 62+) $26; Youth (age 11-17) $22; Child (age 3-10) $19; Children under age 2 are free; add-on audio tour rental $7; Active US Military service member free with valid Military ID, walk-ups get in without timed ticket.
* Adv Ticket purchase at:

Ongoing, in San Pedro:
"LOST AT SEA: THE EXPLORATIONS OF DR. ROBERT BALLARD" is an exhibition aboard the BATTLESHIP IOWA, docked as a museum in San Pedro, at 250 S Harbor Bl, Los Angeles, CA 90731
*  “Everyone is an explorer. How could you possibly live your life looking at a door and not open it?” – Dr. Robert Ballard, discoverer of the wreck of RMS TITANIC.
*  The exhibit opened Oct 31, 2018 after previews during "Fleet Week."
*  It includes the "Lost at Sea" gallery, "Alpha Romeo Tango (ART)" art gallery, and ship tour expansion that now includes the USS Iowa's capability as a floating city, with a look at the ship's on-board laundry, barbershop, and brig.
*  Battleship IOWA Museum was chosen to launch “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” before it goes elsewhere. Ballard is known the world over for his discovery of the final resting place of the Titanic; yet, he has quested for and found many more vessels whose origins date over the past 2,000 years. Their common fate was that they have been claimed by our oceans and seas. Many lie undisturbed as what Ballard calls “undersea museums,” and these are revealed to visitors aboard the historic USS IOWA.
*  This retrospective is a showcase for the Iowa to highlight many of the world’s most historically noted underwater wrecks, found by the explorer.
* “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” was made possible by a generous grant from the Confidence Foundation and is jointly sponsored by Dr. Robert Ballard, the Port of Los Angeles, Ocean Exploration Trust, and AltaSea.
*  The "Lost at Sea" exhibit is included with General Admission to the Battleship IOWA. Museum ticket office opens daily at 10 am and the last tour ticket is sold at 4 pm. Ticket prices at the box office are $19.95 for ages 12–61. Youth tickets, age 5 – 11, are $11.95. Senior admission (age 62 and over) are $9.95. Children under age 5 are free. FRIDAY, JAN 11

GO OUTSIDE AND WATCH THE ROCKET LAUNCH AT 7:31 AM

At 7:31 am, from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex (SLC) 4e, Space X will launch the Iridium-8 Mission aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket. The rocket may briefly be visible to the west from the Los Angeles area, and should easily be seen from Santa Barbara and the central coast. It is taking the final 10 Iridium satellites into polar orbit to complete the 75-satellite constellation. These satellites provide L- band voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers, and integrated transceivers over the entire surface of the Earth.

ONLINE ---Watch "Iridium-8 Mission" launch LIVE on YouTube, at:

https://youtu.be/VshdafZvwrg

We know, you thought it would be that GIANT rocket we've been updating, each time they try and fail to get it off the ground. Yeah, well, it was re-re-re-re (etc) scheduled for today, but It's scrubbed again... this time because the Iridium Mission was already set. We'll keep you posted.

Before this latest delay of THAT launch, we wrote the following and put it in this space:

Question: REMEMBER the GIANT ROCKET LAUNCH from up the coast that we called the "Greatest Show on Earth & in Space" (each of the times they tried to launch it) back in December?

Well, it's launch is now rescheduled (re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-scheduled) for today, JANUARY 11th, with time of day tba.

All the info about the rocket and the mission are still news, by definition, because it's still supposed to happen and it's still on its launch pad and it'll still blaze across the Southern California sky when (make that whenever) it finally does happen. So our original story is still available, with all the deets on what it is, and updates and official launch prognostications added as new developments occur. It's at:

* Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene. Just give them a moment's listen, and you will be floored by their incredible playing and equally incredible voices. Their harmonies lend a beauty that has been unmatched since Simon & Garfunkel.

LATE ADDITION
Tue, Jan 15:
7 pm - Monthly "DAVID HARVEY PRESENTS: STORIES & SONGS" SHOWCASE, with a different lineup each month, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA
* David Harvey has assembled an all star cast of DYLAN BRODY, VICKI JUDITZ, AMY ENGELHARDT & ALEX STEIN to "reign in the new year right."
* Harvey tells us, "We're flipping the format of the showcase this month to bring in the New Year (Saturnalia is over-rated). So in January we have a Literary Revel with three Brilliant Storytellers each doing two short sets with an incredible Songwriter in-between."
Performer bio notes:
*  Dylan Brody. Dylan Brody is an award winning playwright, a thrice published author, a humorist and a story-teller. He's a writer for the Huffington Post and a new contributor to NPR's "OffRamp" on KPCC. Dylan has been twice featured on the hit WTFPodcast hosted by Marc Maron. His fans that include comedic legends such as Carl Reiner, Robin Williams, David Sedaris, Roseanne Barr and Richard Lewis. Dylan has earned a reputation as one of America’s fastest rising storytellers. He is also a martial artist, but those skills probably will not come into play during the show. Unless something goes horribly wrong. Website
*  Alex Stein. America's Comedy calls Alex Stein "a masterful storyteller who peppers his tales with humor, soul, and a top-notch wit". His Essay collection No, Mister Bond, I Expect Your Dreams To Die! is available around the world {and here tonight). He's also an award-winning documentary film maker and he curated, hosted, and produced the weekly Muse Literary Salon storytelling show for two-and-a-half years until he realized no one should do that. His hobbies include fixing second act problems in exchange for triple creme-cheese and standing in bars, coffee shops, and theaters, telling stories of heartache, longing, and loss. Website
*  Vicki Juditz. Vicki Juditz has performed her original stories at theaters, temples, and festivals across the country and beyond, including the National Storytellling Festival in Jonesborough, TN, The Aspen LAFF Festival, and the Jewish Arts Festival of Hong Kong. In Los Angeles, she performs regularly with many spoken word series, such as Speakeasy, Tasty Words, Jewish Women's Theater, I Love a Good Story, Tales by the Sea, Spark, Expressing Motherhood, and The LA Storytelling Festival. On TV she has sold everything from Good Kitty Pet Beverage to birth control pills and guest-starred on Storytime, Everybody Loves Raymond, Yes, Dear, and My Name is Earl. Her many personal essays on environmental matters have appeared in the online publications MAD AS HELL CLUB and ECO-PERKS.
*  Amy Engelhardt, the night's Featured Songwriter: “Amy Bob” was the sole female member/writer/arranger for Grammy-nominated, genre-busting vocal band The Bobs from 1998-2011 . Amy made her Off-Broadway debut in 2017 as composer/lyricist of BASTARD JONES, nominated for Best New Musical by the Off-Broadway Alliance. Amy's Theatrical writing credits include book/music/lyrics for TRIPTYCH (NY Transit Museum), commissioned adaptations of Carl Sagan's CONTACT (2009 Puget Sound Theatre Award: Best New Play), and A COMEDY OF ERAS at ACT Seattle (w/the Flying Karamazov Brothers). Her solo CD, Not Gonna Be Pretty, was hailed as the "unlikely and intriguing marriage of Nellie McKay and Meat Loaf." Amy is perhaps most proud of the multiple plays her comedy songs have on The Doctor Demento Show - 3 of them this past holiday season! She is the only honorary female member of the Vienna Boys Choir.
* Tix, $15, cash-only at the door for tonight's show. No reservations for these showcases; just arrive in time to pay your admission, get in, and get a seat.

LATE ADDITION
Tue, Jan 15, on TV:
9 pm - "AMERICAN EXPERIENCE" debuts "THE SWAMP."
* Explore the story of Florida's Everglades, America's greatest wetland. It's told through the lives of a handful of colorful and resolute characters, including MARJORIE STONEMAN DOUGLAS, the writer who became an ardent advocate for preserving the Everglades, and HAMILTON DISSTON, the wealthy entrepreneur who first attempted to drain the swamp for exploitive profiteering.
* PBS says, "'The Swamp' chronicles the repeated efforts to conquer what was once seen as useless wasteland and the passionate efforts to preserve it."
* Editor's note: The Seminole Indians took refuge in the Florida swamps when the white man's treaties proved to be breakable lies of convenience; the Seminoles, who became synonymous with those storied wetlands, were not originally indigenous to the Everglades. And as recently as the 1980s, one of the world's largest would-be airports had its runways built in the midst of the Everglades, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, before the egomanically crazy project was stopped. There's a lot of story for PBS to tell here.
* On KOCE, aka PBS SoCal.

*  The Guide has written about Mosher (pronounced moe-zhur) mant times in past years. Not having part of her circle or otherwise followed her career for some time, we turn to Falling James in LA Weekly: "Mosher is a longtime Angeleno who has released several solo pop and country-rock albums, including 'Everything You Need' and 'City of Clowns'."
* Falling James continues, "'Welcome to the city of clowns,' she sings on the title track of the latter record, an ambivalent look at life in Los Angeles. Mosher also has been a member of Calico the Band with Kirsten Proffit..."
* "...last year [Mosher] released 'Under Blue Skies,' an assortment of country-flavored tunes mixed with harder-rocking power-pop songs. The record ranges from L.A.-centric country-pop odes such as 'The 405' to a sweetly honeyed and glittery version of The Mamas & the Papas’ 'California Dreamin'. "

*  With performances equal to the mastery of the Park Ranger trade, THE WARDENS are a Banff National Park-based trio whose stories rise from the very land they’ve protected, collectively, for more than 60 years.

*  In the US, we call their profession "NATIONAL PARK RANGERS." (That is assuming we will still HAVE any Nat'l Park Rangers after they go indefinitely without getting paid during the Trumpertantrum-caused federal gov't shutdown.)
*  In Canada, their Nat'l Park rangers are called "WARDENS," and that REALLY is the shared background of the members of this band.
*  The Wardens' - Scott Ward, Bradley Bischoff and Ray Schmidt - "mountain music" - blends folk, roots and western styles - and is a piece of Canadiana reflecting the pristine wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. The trio have performed at Folk Alliance International, Canmore Folk Fest, Alberta Showcase and shared the stage with Blue Rodeo, Paul Brandt, Scenic Route to Alaska and Ian Tyson.
Performer bio notes:
*  Bradley Bischoff brings Vocals, lead and rhythm guitar. Stationed in the rugged South Boundary region of Jasper National Park in incomparably beautiful Alberta, Bradley began his national park warden lifestyle in 1981. Assigned alone to the backcountry with a handful of horses for seventeen days at a time, Bradley penned many songs by the dim cabin lights and the dusky summers spent in the high alpine ranges.
*  Ray Schmidt provides Vocals, upright bass, and mandolin. Currently posted in Rogers Pass, British Columbia, Ray works with grizzly bears in the interior rainforest of Glacier National Park. Ray founded The Wardens in 2009, with Scott Ward, during the national park warden centennial after discovering the rich depth of music and stories within this region of Canada.
*  Scott Ward does Vocals and plays fingerstyle guitar. A national park warden for over 30 years in Banff National Park, Scott's music stems from a life lived in the deep wilderness of the Canadian Rockies as a horseman, search-and-rescue dog handler, and technical alpine specialist. Evoking the haunting fingerstyle guitar of Gordon Lightfoot with the mystique and presence of Ian Tyson, Scott's music embodies Canadian authenticity. In 2001, Scott was awarded the "Governor General's Award" for "Exemplary Service as a Peace Officer."
* Tix, $18. Good idea to reserve in advance for this one.

, CA
*  It's a presentation in the Ernest C. Watson Lecture Series, given by Omer Tamuz, Assistant Professor of Economics and Mathematics at Caltech in the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
*  Random walks have been studied for over 100 years as important models in physics, computer science, finance, and economics -- and as interesting mathematical objects in their own right.  If you don't know about them, this is an excellent chance to be introduced.
*  The Watson Series offers a great window on current scientific research, where scholars in many fields try to describe their studies in layperson terms.
*  These talks are free.
* The next one in the series is Wed, Feb 27, with Caltech's Kip Thorne's presentation, "My Half Century Romance with Caltech and with Black Holes, Wormholes, Time Travel, and Gravitational Waves." Ohhhh, yeeeeaaaah.

8 pm - CLAYTON CHANEY (formerly of THE SHOW PONIES) & HIS BAND: AMERICANA SENSATION, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; phone for reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days: 626-798-6236.

* Clayton Chaney brings a four-piece ensemble of drums, keys, and guitar, with himself on vox/bass. Chaney’s songwriting inhabits the Americana realm, mixing elements of folk, gospel, and rock ‘n roll.

* Clayton has been on stage many times at The Coffee Gallery Backstage as former front man of the indie-folk group, The Show Ponies. This performance will be his first live show with these new songs. You can get a taste of the upcoming goodness at his website here.
* Chaney is a rare breed of front-man/bassists well-versed in the techniques of melodic story telling. His songs have a way of preserving hope in a world steeped in sadness and cynicism while confronting the fears and failures that come along with being human. As the former co-lead singer of The Show Ponies, Chaney has experienced America’s big cities and small towns from stages around the country. He was very sad when he sold his Ford Econoline after the band stopped touring in 2017.
* He draws inspiration from the old sounds of Roger Miller and Elvis Presley while indulging in newer influences such as Dawes, John Moreland and Jonny Fritz. As a native of Arkansas and long time resident of Southern California, Chaney’s songs seem to reconcile a traditional upbringing in Middle America with an ever-changing coming-of-age on the West Coast. This contemplative blend of folk, gospel, and rock ’n roll is what Clayton Chaney is known for as his catalogue of original songs continues to expand.
* Tix, $15. (One of this week's real bargains.)

* He is superbly talented. And supposedly this time, Marty is going at it alone. All alone. But not alone, really. Because with musical friends like the delightful NICOLE GORDON and others, he isn't about to pass up sharing the stage. Well, sharing the stage for part of the evening, that is.

* His songwriting is creatively contemporary and involves his audience from the get-go. You’ll hear new songs about self-driving cars and the bubonic plague. And old favorites about cats and caves.

* Marty Axelrod has trod the carpeted riser of the Coffee Gallery Backstage as a member of Tall Men Group, Spork and Foon, Mutual Admiration Society and Songs of Shiloh, as accompanist for myriad wonderful artists, and as solo performer in songwriter showcases.

* But wait, there’s more! Very special guests! The one and only NICOLE GORDON will join Marty on four songs from their acclaimed cd SONGS OF SHILOH. On top of that (musically speaking), Zoe Axelrod will recreate her vocal harmonies from the cd.
* Good show so far, eh? How about if we add a special appearance by the wonderful AIREENE ESPIRITU, to sing two morbidly funny duets she and Marty have written -- “I May Be Dead, But I’m Not Blind” and “Why Should the Living Have All the Fun?”

*  What is Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music?
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (ki ho'alu) is truly one of the world’s great acoustic guitar traditions, considered to be one of the oldest music traditions to still be a viable (other than just historical) part of a modern culture. Ki ho'alu, which literally means to "loosen the key," is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.

*  This year’s Southern California Slack Key Festival’s line-up includes George Kuo , Kawika Kahiapo, Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Teresa Bright, Bobby Ingano, and Kunia Galdeira.
*  James "Kimo" West is a L.A.-based composer, guitarist and music producer. He is also well-known as long-time guitarist for the world's most successful musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic and also as one of the world's top "slack key" guitarists. For over twenty-five years, he has composed music for features, network and cable TV, advertising, documentaries and web series. Completely self-taught, he learned orchestration "on the job" by re-scoring music for thirteen classic Fox films, entirely by ear. Scores for such films as "Journey to The Center of the Earth", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Sun Also Rises" were being released in foreign markets with new language tracks and, since many of the music elements were missing, Jim was hired to "re-score" the original music under dialog. His interest in "ki ho'alu" or Hawaiian slack key guitar began during his first visit to Hawaii, in the rural town of Hana, Maui. It was there he fell in love with the lilting sound of slack key. Evidently director Alexander Payne did as well, featuring slack key music for the score of the Oscar-winning film, "The Descendants". "Kimo" as he is known in Hawaii is recognized as one of the masters of slack key and has received many awards such as The Hawaii Music Award, The L.A. Treasures Award and is twice-nominated for the Na Hoku Hanohano Award (the Hawaiian "Grammy". He performs in slack key festivals and concerts and his slack key compositions grace five CD's, documentaries and national TV spots. His work with "Weird Al" has produced three Grammy's, many gold and platinum albums, international touring and TV appearances on The Tonight Show, The View, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and countless others.*  Kala Koa Entertainment celebrates 12 years of bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to "the mainland" with the 2019 Southern California Slack Key Festival.
*  One of the most acclaimed Hawaiian concerts to ever leave the islands, the Southern California Slack Key Festival takes fans on a Hawaiian musical journey that showcases GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and a free-to-the-public "Island Marketplace."
*  This festival was the first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii. It set a major milestone for Hawaiian music events on the mainland when it debuted in 2008, and has garnered a huge loyal following -- creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.

5 pm-8 pm - BLAKE MILLER & THE OLD FASHIONED ACES play StillWater Spirits & Sounds, 24701 Del Prado Av, Dana Point, CA 92629
* Guy Martin of the "Louisiana Dancing" blog writes, "As the grandson of the world-renowned Cajun accordion-builder Larry Miller, helping in his grandfather’s shop from a very early age, he met and was influenced by some of the greatest names in Louisiana music."
* Band leader Blake Miller says, “This is what I grew up with. I thought everyone listened to Cajun music all the time.”
* Guy Martin adds, "Inspired by the constant contact with famed Cajun and Creole musicians, the steady stream of house parties and jams at his grandfather’s shop, Miller has been playing since receiving his first toy accordion at age 5, and also plays fiddle, guitar, bass, and his latest obsession, steel guitar. He’s gone on to become a legendary Cajun musician himself.
"Having played widely throughout the U.S. and traveling all over the world in his 32 years, as founding member of Pine Leaf Boys and member of the Red Stick Ramblers Miller has performed with just about every renowned Cajun artist in Louisiana, and an extensive list of venues rivaling that of a musician twice his age.
"Asked how he came to the Aces trio configuration, Miller says, “I wanted to do something more homey, like comfort food-you know, like a great gumbo. Something that would stick to your ribs."
* Miller says, “My favorite places to play are the old opera houses and the dance halls. The places with low ceilings, dark, not always good sound. The grittier places.”
* Martin concludes, "What inspires and drives Miller is his passion for bringing back traditional Cajun music and letting people know that 'Cajun music is alive! It’s happening! It’s the real thing! Come check it out!'”

* At age 76, Michael Nesmith is on a roll. The singer-guitarist has finally embraced his past as a member of The Monkees in tours with Micky Dolenz the past few years. He's also drawn from his underrated solo career,  where he paved the way for numerous others by mixing rock and country long before it was hip. Tonight, Papa Nes revisits his 1972 solo album, "And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’," accompanied by guitarist Pete Finney, who evokes parts originally played by late pedal-steel maestro Red Rhodes. "And the Hits..." is an unusual record with thoughtful ballads like "The Upside of Goodbye" and a homespun intimate version of the early Linda Ronstadt hit "Different Drum" delivered with little more than stripped-down guitars. (Written with substantial borrowing from Falling James in LA Weekly.)
* TIX are costly as hell: $60 & $205.

8 pm - BRITTNI PAIVA: LEGENDARY HAWAIIAN MASTER OF UKULELE, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; phone for reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days: 626-798-6236.
* Venue impresario Bob Stande says, "We only get her once every 5 years. During her last performance at Coffee Gallery she sold out the show and many people were turned away. Reserve in advance so you are not one of them!"
* Brittni Paiva (pie –VAH) already a multi award-winning instrumentalist is known for her stunning articulation of what she can do on the ukulele going from slow and moving, to rapid-fire, classical-ballet, to ancient Japan, translating forms of jazz, world beat, pop, Flamenco and Latin, and filter these styles through her 4-string ukulele.
* Brittni and her ukulele are a brilliant match: Both are humble in nature, small in size, and very powerful with proper delivery. Brittni and the ukulele in general have gained notoriety, no longer confined by stereotypes about the instrument. There’s a global resurgence in the instrument’s popularity and she is part of the trend.
* She has performed on stage with Carlos Santana when he appeared in Hawaii; also joined famed guitarist Tommy Emmanuel on stage at the California Worldfest; and become a 3-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner with numerous other nominations throughout the years, including Most Promising Artist of the Year in 2005 for her debut release, Brittni x 3.
* Releasing her 5th CD with the legendary Grammy winner Tom Scott — who personally requested to play with her at a concert — thinks Paiva is the real deal, because of her ability to play all kinds of music without losing her identity. “She plays it like a guitar, giving her a wide range of possibilities. She adopts tunes to this instrument, and makes them sound full and rich. She’s doing a great job and has a great future…She’s got a really unique voice in music,” he raved.
* Brittni received two nominations for this 5th CD and won both categories: Ukulele Album of the Year and Best Instrumental Composition of the Year from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (Na Hoku Hanohano Awards).
* “Brittni brings a whole new spirit to the music and to the instrument: pop sensibilities in a smooth jazz format,” says John Schroeter, music producer and author of Between the Strings: The Secret Lives of Guitars. “It’s got a new kind of energy—it’s infectious.”
* Brittni is well-known in world music circles with millions of hits on YouTube. She began her music career at age four trained in classical piano through the Suzuki method. Seven years later, her grandfather gave her an `ukulele, a traditional 4-string Hawaiian folk instrument. It was “love at first touch”.

9 pm - FIONA GREY plays free with RSVP at Madame Siam, 1723 N Hudson Av, East Hollywood (L.A.), CA  90028; http://www.madamesiam.com
* "Whether she’s backed by just an acoustic guitarist or pulling out all the showy stops in a full-band performance augmented by her crew of sexy dancers, Fiona Grey radiates star power and endless charisma," opines LA Weekly's Falling James.  He adds, "Decked out onstage in a long, sheer wedding veil, white boots and matching thigh-high stockings, the local singer revels in and embraces the idea of fame with such wearily cynical but inevitably seductive dance-pop songs as 'Money' and 'Media Queen, 'from her 2018 album, 'Cult Classic'."
* This isn't for everyone. Those who like their lyrics about thoughtful concepts best not go. Here are some of her lyrics: "If I had a god, it would be you, honey / Lay me on your bed, f*ck me on your money." That is an example that Falling James cites, characterizing it as, "she pleads soulfully on 'Fangirl.'" He quotes more of her lyrics: "'I’m all dressed up, queen with no crown / I try to be tough / It’s safer here on the ground,' she laments on the more introspective ballad 'Girls Like Me'."
*  He also adds, "Catch her now in small clubs while she’s still a cult heroine."
*  That may be true, James. It's more a case of whether she's someone's cup of whatever they're drinking.
*  The rest of the night's lineup leaves no chance of being acoustic; it's: Uruguay, MXMS, and a DJ.

* On tap is a fun-filled evening of singing and stories, and yes, you are invited to sing along.
* John Denver was the first artist to sing and speak eloquently for protecting the planet. His song "Rocky Mountain High" became the anthem that caused Colorado to reject the Winter Olympics because it would have over-developed a vast area of the high back country.

Anne, his wife and musical partner, plays guitar and mandolin and sings harmony in all the right places. Together, they will take you on a musical journey of the heart, where you will be invited to sing, clap your hands, stomp your feet and howl at the moon. Don’t worry; you already know the words to the songs!
* Tribute artist Jim Curry, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie "Take Me Home: The John Denver Story," has performed Denver's music in sold out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Denver’s message is worth repeating: “Be kind to the Earth and to each other.”

* Bob continues, "This is as good as it gets. I expect her to sell out every seat and then some. This is a momentous time for me and The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Call now. ~ Bob Stane
* Emi Sunshine IS nearly impossible to explain. The exceptional talents of EmiSunshine, the 14-year-old prodigy from East Tennessee, has captured the nation’s attention and enchanted hearts-a-many with her musical wizardry. Website
* Steeped in Appalachian music, Emi is a true vocal stylist. Influenced by legends (Loretta Lynn/Tanya Tucker/ TheLouvin Brothers), she is a throwback to earlier eras of country music when trendsetters like Bessie Smith, June Carter, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams made history. The sassy, strikingly powerful, ultra entertainer is bound and determined to follow in their footsteps, and while she has some pretty big shoes to fill, this little lady fits the bill.
* The witty songwriter self-produces all of her music (live and in the studio). Emi plays a wailing guitar; she can make the mandolin cry and the ukulele sing. Her ability to combine her youthful, bubbly disposition with deep, meaningful and rather dark song content brings her imagination to life. While her music as been described as “old-timey,” she adds her own unique, contemporary blend of roots music that is equal parts Americana, Bluegrass, Gospel, and Country, with a sprinkle of Blues and a whole lot of “shock factor.” Described as a “modern-day Janis Joplin,” she delivers vivid emotion with every spine-chilling, spirited yet haunting note.
* The crooner now plays more than 50 dates a year backed by a group made up of those closest to her. Her father plays upright bass, her brother (John Letner) accompanies her on mandolin and “Uncle Bobby” Hill plays drums. The fearless entertainer has performed on The Today Show and The Grand Ole Opry (more than a dozen times), at The Ryman and numerous renowned festivals (CMA Fest and Merle Fest) making evident her confident musical direction.
* The EmiSunshine bandwagon is loaded with adoring fans numbered in the millions from all over the globe. Personal musical heroes have been captivated by her commanding stage presence; Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Tim McGraw, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and The Grateful Dead (to name just a few) have stepped forward to sing the praises of Emi Sunshine.
* Born Emilie Sunshine Hamilton, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has been surrounded by family members who possess a genuine love for “salt-of-the-earth,” mountain melodies and lyrics.
Emi embraced the classic country, blues and folk music that echoed throughout her Madisonville, TN home.
* Tix, $25. Make reservations.

LATE ADDITION...
Sat, Feb 2:
7 pm - DIVINE WEEKS record release show for their final album "We’re All We Have" is a benefit for "WISH Inclusive Public Schools," with THE PRATIES at BeatBox Studios, 11828 Teale St, Culver City Ca 90230
*  For starters, this listing goes off the reservation for lots of our readers. So why is it here? Arguably, DIVINE WEEKS is, and for decades has been, L.A.’s seminal indie guitar band. And this a lot like their farewell concert.
*  "Variety" called "We’re All We Have" one of 2018’s "10 best releases." Specifically: "An unabashedly — yet never obviously political — cycle of songs about showing love in the face of darkness, the album might be alternately titled 'Songs to Survive the Current Administration By.'" -- Chris Morris, in "Variety." Read his full story at:
https://variety.com/2018/music/opinion/10-best-albums-of-2018-chris-morris-1203089328
*  This album wraps-up the band's three-decade long legacy of ups and downs. That includes signing to Steve Wynn’s Down There Record Label (with the Dream Syndicate’s Dennis Duck on drums) which brought their critically-acclaimed debut album way back in 1987 -- geologic time in the indie music world. They go back so far that their 2nd album was released the same day as Nirvana’s "Nevermind." Then came a 25 year hiatus. That was followed by front man Bill See’s 2011 memoir "33 Days," and 2016’s "See Those Landing Lights" reunion.
*  This album -- their final incendiary statement -- calls for love, redemption and being on the left side of history in Trump’s America, and it features the powerful final single, “Fight For Love.”
*  Music history. You might want to say, "I was there."
*  View the album trailer -- if you have allowed Google spyware to infest your device with its "account" -- at:

*  Tix available at the door, but don't go late.
