St. Patrick's & Irish / Celtic Music & Related Events in Southern Cal. March 14 2019 edition.

.
.
If you're looking for a ST. PATRICK'S CELEBRATION in Southern Cal with REAL IRISH MUSIC,  you've come to the right place. Once again, THE GUIDE delivers more than ANY other source!
___________
.
Given the sheer joy with which ST. PATRICK'S DAY is anticipated and embraced in our society, it seems impossible that the Irish in America were once reviled.

"No Irish Need Apply" was a common sign in the windows of workplaces and places of lodging in the 19th and early 20th century. In the American Civil War, regiments of Irish enlisted en masse on both sides, seeking to earn a place in their adopted country.

After the Civil War, the Union Pacific assembled its construction forces from Irish veterans of the Civil War. They built the first transcontinental railroad west to its meeting place in remote Promontory, Utah, and the Irish drove nearly every spike from the East up to the Golden Spike -- and since no one knows who placed the final iron spike that took the place of the ceremonial gold and silver ones, that actual final spike has a 50/50 chance of having been driven by an Irish tracklayer.

(Note that the Central Pacific, building east from California to meet the UP, recruited Chinese immigrants as its construction force. And note that May 10, 2019, marks The 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, and it will be celebrated in Utah with re-enactments, replicas of the 1869 steam locomotives, two giant restored 1940s-era operating steam locomotives, plus a wide variety of historical, arts, period music, and cultural events. History lives, all around us, sometimes with conscious emphasis, sometimes with patterned ways of doing things.)

In some cities, especially Boston, Irish cops and firefighters became the norm as inroads were established and jobs held specifically for countrymen who had been kept from other employment, and that continued through most of the 20th century.

Through it all, Irish music and dance won fans among the masses and became accepted as integral to Folk-Americana music.

So now, Chicagoans dye their river green and a dozen big cities stage St. Patrick's Day Parades every March 17th.

And throughout America, in towns large and small, IRISH MUSIC draws every ethnicity to wear green and drink green-tinted Guiness (or a less authentically Irish beer) and get acquainted with the kinetic fun of the the Céilì.

Of course, it isn't limited to March 17th, nor should it be. It's not like Mardi Gras, where the hoopla is supposed to end with a "day-after" dawning of piety and self deprivation on Ash Wednesday. With St. Paddy's, there's no reason to subdue yourself on March 18th. Or to hold-off starting your celebration as early as you can.

SO.... HERE is the Guide's GUIDE TO ST. PATRICK'S SEASON in Southern California.

Sure, much of this has been called-out in our events edition updates for weeks. But here it is, UPDATED, in a special edition that's JUST IRISH / ST. PATRICK'S MUSIC & EVENTS.

Slàinte!

AND, of course, a continuously-updated earlier edition has all the ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC events, FILM EVENTS, special exhibitions, and more -- and everything else that doesn't qualify as "Irish" to get into this special edition. Guide to Irish-y Interaction...

For starters, it isn't a St. Patrick's celebration if they're foisting music on you that isn't Irish, or at least a mix of Celtic that's Irish enough to be passable. That said, you have passed your orientation for what qualifies to be in this special edition.

Now... ever wonder what it would be like to celebrate St. Patty's Day in Ireland?

You can try a bit o' Irish slang to get into the spirit of St. Patrick's festivities, even if you just can't make it to the real deal.

We're told this is a quick guide to sounding authentic while you're out with your friends this weekend:

"Howya!" (Hi, Hello)
"What's the story?" (What's happening?)
"On the tear!" (Going drinking)

Also, try asking your bartender for "a pint of the black stuff" while you're out. If he/she understands you, we hope you like Guiness, because that's what you just ordered.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
