Art exhibition: "COYOTE LEAVES THE RES: THE ART OF HARRY FONSECA" at the Autry Museum of the American West, across from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park, at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027

*  Featuring paintings, sketches, and lithographs, this exhibition focuses on the recurring figure of Coyote, a trickster, shape shifter, and storyteller capable of moving undetected between different worlds.
*  Fonseca was an instrumental force in reshaping Native art with his trademark blend of traditional imagery, contemporary experience, and vibrant color and form. As he used his art to explore both his personal journey and the role of history in shaping Native consciousness in the present, Fonseca sought to expand definitions of American Indian art and to shatter the expectations and stereotypes that had long confined it.
*  As both a gay man and a person of mixed heritage, Fonseca used his work as a vehicle for self-discovery a means of navigating different aspects of his life and identity during a time when ideas about Native peoples were often driven by outside forces, including commercial markets, tourism, and historical clichés.
*  RUNS May 19, 2019–January 5, 2020 in the Autry's George Montgomery Gallery.
*  Opens daily at 10 am. Closes Tue-Fri at 4 pm, Sat & Sun at 5 pm.

Saturday
________________

"STAR WARS DAY" is officially proclaimed today by the City of Los Angeles -- as in, "May the Fourth be with you." Though the charm is considerably dimmed when you learn the proclamation is tied to the megabuck opening of the new "Stars War Land" attraction at the shockingly overpriced Disney Theme Park. (It used to be known as Disneyland, when you could afford to go without worrying whether it was taking your rent, mortgage, second child's indentured servitude, or car payment.)

Remember to check yesterday's listings for FESTIVALS running through the weekend. In TODAY'S listings, only Festivals that START Saturday are listed, and those appear first, followed by concerts & other events, listed by start time.

Sat, May 4; Fri & Sat, May 3 & 4, FREE FESTIVAL:
10 am-10 pm - "UNION STATION 80th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION" at Union Station Los Angeles, 800 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Then and now -- still vital.

*  When it opened in 1939 as Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, it was the last of the great train stations built in America. Three railroads each had their own separate station until then -- the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Be, the Southern Pacific, and the Union Pacific.
*  Designed in a bold combination of Mission Revival,
Art Deco, Moderne, and other architechtectural elements, the station was as dramatic then as it is now. It was nearly torn down in the early 1970s, as passenger trains had all but vanished until the coming of Amtrak and the later commuter rail renaissance.
*  Now, we celebrate all the station has been, and all it will yet become.
*   At 10 am and 11 am on Saturday, docents from Metro Arts will be conducting two art and architecture tours to showcase the splendor of the station. Tours will start in the station’s East Portal ajacent to the aquarium.
*  From 3:30-9 pm, the Historic Ticket Concourse will become a hub of live entertainment featuring some of L.A.’s favorite bands including 30s and 40s jazz classics from Hothouse, big band funk from Phil Ranelin, Ska from Western Standard and the pan-Latin sound of Buyepongo.
*  Unfortunately, the three best bands all played a shorter celebration schedule on Friday:
CALIFORNIA FEETWARMERS, THE NEW RECESSIONAIRES, and JAZZY ASH.
Sailors during WW II rested between trains
in the same leather and wood seating you do.
*  There's food sand cocktail specials, an operating modular model railroad, limited-edition Union Station anniversary T-shirts and merchandise.
*  From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the North Patio will be transformed into a Family Fun Zone including a Griffith Park Travel Town activity corner, a Giggle Factory play zone and a kids’ concert series featuring a workshop from Rhythm Child and performances from Angel Bird and Jazzy Ash.
*  From 10 am-8 pm the station’s majestic South Patio will become a lively marketplace showcasing local artists and artisans with L.A.-inspired art, crafts and gifts including Angel City Press, Lit Soul Candles and Self Help Graphics and featuring live music from Soul Fab (DJs John Gregory) SOL!D Selectors ( DJ Mick Cole), DJ Funky Soul, urban soul from KCRW’s Raul Campos (with guest DJs) and performances from Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles and Latin soul band Jungle Fire.
*  A Living Gallery will feature an electronic photo retrospective of the station’s storied past.
*  The city’s hottest food trucks and a festive picnic area will provide guests with a diverse and delicious taste of L.A. throughout the day.
*  Union Station is accessible via Metro Rail, Metro Bus and several municipal bus lines. Use the Trip Planner at metro.net for routes and connections. Car and bicycle parking are also available on site.

*  The play is performed outdoors at the “Little Theatre of the Standing Rocks” by local Antelope Valley youth.

Young actor Austi3n SZINTAI will play Coyote, and SHANNON BATU will play Slo the Eagle. SIENNA BATU will play Deer, and BLAKE BONAFEDE and ORAYA STEVENSON will play Rabbits.

Today is "CINCO DE MAYO." Here's a great summation of the date's significance: "Although Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, the holiday basically was born in California – twice, in fact. While Mexican immigrant workers are said to have started Cinco de Mayo to celebrate Mexico’s surprising military triumph, the holiday then gained more prominence around 100 years later during the Chicano civil rights movement, which was particularly strong in California." -- Michael Berick, in laparent.com.
*  We added a lot to our roundup of Cinco de Mayo events thanks to his
feature article.

*  THIS IS A delightful day of Dylan classics performed by a vast variety of artists, including GRAMMY winners and nominees. Some bring their own fresh arrangements, others are classic Dylan from whatever period the original recording made the song immortal. Go once, and you'll return every year.
*  A trademark is the sudden appearance of dancers in appropriate costumes and/or rapid-fire cue cards that give the lyrics to the crowd for emphasized shouted sing-along lines, like "The pump won't work / 'cause the vandals took the handle."
*  You'll get SIXTY-THREE Dylan songs!
*  There are no repeated songs, all day, and you'll get everything from raucous horn section accompaniments to  just a movingfully sparse acoustic guitar or keyboard with a voice that can bring tears.
*  When you arrive, get the program so you'll be sure not to be be in the bathroom when your favorite is performed.
An absolute, move-you-to-tears, remember-it-forever highlight: when Renee begins at the back of the audience with a wireless mic, singing Bob Dylan's '60s antiwar classic, "With God on Our Side." In our current age of perpetual war, there will be attentive silence, and there won't be a dry eye anywhere by the time she reaches the stage.
*   Beyond the moving moments? This one is really, really fun.
*   The food vendor is excellent, and there's good merch: high-quality swag, commemorative mugs, and performer CDs they'll sign for you.

*  Larry B. Wilder counts the Carter Family, Earl Scruggs, Kingston Trio, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Sons of the Pioneers and Chet Atkins as some of his strongest influences in Americana music. But he doesn’t stop there.
*  He goes deeper into the realm of America’s music through folk artists Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly plus classic composers such as Irving Berlin. He creates fast-paced, energetic shows that draw a fun loving, enthusiastic audience.

*  It may sound ridiculous to say tbat every sound you hear at a Beatunes concert is played live by the band. But It's necessary, because they always get accused of lip synching to original Beatles recordings. No tracks. It's done live. It's done right. Wed, May 8:
7:30 pm - BRUCE FORMAN, leader of COW BOP, and Poet Laureate of North Coast Brewery, plays his critically-acclaimed signature concert, "The Red Guitar," at Upstairs at Vitellos,  4349 Tujunga Av, Studio City CA 91604
*  He doesn't do this show often. It's a masterwork, based on the theme of "The Red Shoes," wherein a little girl wants to dance like a great ballerina, and she dons the red shoes and cannot stop -- until she dances herself to death. In Forman's reimagining, he wants to play like all the great jazz guitarists, and when he picks up the red guitar, he does. Seriously, he DOES. The guy has the chops to do it, which is why this show is a must-see. In addition to his interactions with Faust and Freud during the can't-stop-playing performance.
*  BRUCE tells us it's "A performance of my updated one-man show at Vitello's... Please get your tickets early, they are really tough there and are liable to raise the ticket prices for walk-ins... This is a great venue for the show, and rumor has it that there will be some jazz intervention at the end..."
* THEN HE ADDS THIS: "I'll be just getting back from playing at JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER... so I'll be inna Broadway kinda mood..."
*  We told you he has the chops to do it! If you're reading this far enough in advance, you can also catch him with COW BOP, his Western swing band, at an event for the "Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival" on Fri, Apr 12; see listing.

FESTIVALS started THURSDAY and run through the weekend. BE SURE TO SCROLL BACK TO THOSE WRITE-UPS, because we do NOT list them twice!
___

Fri-Sun, May 10-12, FESTIVAL, in Utah:
150th anniversary of the driving of the GOLDEN SPIKE, completing the first transcontinental railroad at remote Promontory Summit, Utah, will be re-enacted May 10 at the exact time, and again on Sat & Sun, May 11 & 12, all on the exact same site. A THREE-DAY FESTIVAL at Golden Spike National Historic Site, hosted by the National Park Service, and another parallel FESTIVAL in Ogden, Utah, co-hosted by the local community and the Union Pacific Railroad beginning May 9th, are centerpiece events.
*  The Golden Spike climaxed the feat of the age -- the transcontinental railroad -- every bit as dramatic an accomplishment in 1869 as the Moon landing was a hundred years later in 1969.

A.J. Russell's 1869 photograph provides the basis for
each re-enactor's role, 150 years later, to the day.
*  When the last spike was driven, everything changed in a single moment. Suddenly, it took a week to travel coast-to-coast. Before that moment, it took months overland by ox-drawn covered wagon, or weeks by steamship around the bottom of South America (there was no Panama Canal yet, and there wouldn't be for decades).
*  With replica steam locomotives, actors portraying each person in the famous photo, and a festival with live music of the era, THIS is irresistible for some (including our editor).
*  For the 150th anniversary, a lot is going on. In Ogden, Utah on May 9th, a stylistically similar event will be held with two giants from the late age of steam. Union Pacific will  ceremonially stage a head-to-head meeting of 4-8-4 "Northern" number 844, and just-restored 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" number 4014. The two will run from Cheyenne,  Wyoming,  to Ogden, under their own steam.
Returning to the very rails for which it was built, the "Big Boy" will make a
commemorative run from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, Utah. It will mark
the return of number 4014 after decades of stuffed-and-mounted display
at Fairplex in Pomona, CA. The world's largest steam locomotive will
mimic the Promontory event one day earlier, coming head-to-head with
"Heritage Fleet" icon number 844, another giant of WWII-era steam.

*  "Big Boy" number 4014 sat in the LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS IN POMONA, stuffed-and-mounted on display for decades.
*  When the giant "Big Boy" emerges from rebuild in the Cheyenne roundhouse to run to Utah, in stsgrs, starting Mat 5th, it will be back on the very route for which its type was built, and it will again be the largest operating locomotive in the world.
*  There's plenty more at these sites:

Sun, May 19, ART EXHIBITION OPENING:
10 am - Art exhibition: "COYOTE LEAVES THE RES: THE ART OF HARRY FONSECA" opens its run May 19th at the Autry Museum of the American West, across from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park, at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Fri, May 24; Fri-Sun, May 24-26, LIVE THEATRE:
8 pm - "DAMN YANKEES," the classic musical comedy, returns in a production by Cedar Street Theatre at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center (LPAC), 750 W Lancaster Bl, Lancaster, CA 93534; www.lpac.org
The original Broadway cast album still sells on CD.
*  With a book by GEORGE ABBOTT and DOUGLASS WALLOP, music and lyrics by RICHARD ADLER and JERRY ROSS, "Damn Yankees" debuted on Broadway in 1955 with a '30s-'40s feel and STEPHEN DOUGLASS in the lead role.
*  Hollywood made a film version in 1958, giving top billing to TAB HUNTER with GWEN VERDON and RAY WALSTON reprising their Broadway roles.
retaining only two of the Broadway songs and filling in with its own replacements. Still, as imdb notes, "the concept of this musical was the preoccupation of the American public with the national pastime of baseball, and its singular domination (between 1947 and 1962) by the New York Yankees."
*  Yes, there is intentional double entendre with the the derisive singularity applied for a hundred years in the former Confederate states to anyone from any other part of the country, but it stops there.
*  So, what's it about? Musicians will ses something of a parallel to the tale of bluesman Robert Johnson.
*  Here, the lead character is middle-aged baseball fanatic "Joe Boyd," who trades his soul to the Devil to make his hapless favorite team suddenly unstoppable winners -- with himself as the team's new star player. Since, if you want something done right, you should do it yourself.
*  The team -- the  Washington Senators -- was, twice upon a time, the real American League major league baseball team in DC, long before today's National League Washington Nationals. The period not only determines the tunage, but adds a lot to the sense of compelling cultural phenomena when baseball truly was the national pastime.
*  The devil, also known as "Mr. Applegate," takes credit for getting the Senators in the pennant race against the perennial AL champs, the New York Yankees. (Make your own comparisons about the devil tempting senators in our own time.)
*  On the field, Joe, the young baseball sensation, transforms the cellar dwellers into a winning team -- only for Joe to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind.
*  When Joe returns to his former life, Applegate demands his soul. Will Joe be able to resist the temptress, Lola, and outsmart the Devil at his own game?
Art for the new production.
*  Obviously, a diamond and outfield won't fit on the stage of a performing arts center, and it is here in the charmingly crafted story, the essential questions of ends vs. means, of "what would YOU do for something you want" -- and of course, in the musical performances -- that the show has remained an enduring hit.
*  Light, fast-paced, delightfully tune-filled and devilishly clever, "Damn Yankees" has been a homerun for decades, featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor.
*  The production runs three performances:
□ Fri, May 24, 8 pm.
□ Sat, May 25, 8 pm.
□ Sun, May 26, 2 pm matinee.
*  Tickets $25; Senior & Youth tix, $22.
