THIS WEEK brings the annual NAMM SHOW in Anaheim, CA, and we'll be reporting from the scene. It's the WORLD'S LARGEST MUSIC INDUSTRY EVENT and we hope our global readership again turns to The Guide for peeks, previews, descriptions and test-drives of what's new from all the instrument, sound, lighting, microphone, production, stage & touring gear, and personal traveling rig outfit makers -- and of course news of who's performing at NAMM, and what the innovators, visionaries, luminaries, road veterans, and others with wise or memorable quips have to say, amidst the ever-expansive "more" that always characterizes the NAMM experience.

Meanwhile, as we move closer to an ezine, feature-story-based format that frees us all from the tyranny of chronology, we DO have all this information hanging around. And seeing that it IS all fully developed for you... and we certainly don't want you to miss anything...

Here ya go. A tango through the tuneage (and more) for the coming week...

Ongoing PODCAST, on-demand:
"RECORDING ARTISTS: RADICAL WOMEN" is a new podcast series from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In it, art historian HELEN MOLESWORTH explores the lives and work of six artists — ALICE NEEL, LEE KRASNER, BETYE SAAR, HELEN FRANKENTHALER, YOKO ONO, and EVA HESSE.
*  What was it like to be a woman making art during the feminist and civil rights movements? In this season of "Recording Artists," Molesworth delves into their lives and careers, spanning several generations. Hear them describe, in their own words, their work, relationships, and feelings about the ongoing march of feminism. Contemporary artists and art historians join the conversation, offering their own perspectives on the recordings and exploring what it meant—and still means—to be a woman and an artist. Share this with one who'll appreciate it.
*   HERE'S THE LINK. The whole series is here in individial episodes so you can pace yourself or binge it. You'll hear rare audiotaped interviews and fresh perspectives on what it meant — and still means — to be a woman making art:

*  This is "A gorgeous mile of fruit and flower garland wallpaper in a gradient of saturated hues containing within its two story installation multiple scenarios and vignettes of photography and ceramic, faux Grecian luxury statues, gilded mirrors, chaises and sundry objects. All of this exists in the mode of a secular temple to beauty, as well as a sort of public living room where communities are formed through the universal language of shareable fruit."
*  Might be the right thing for a memorable date.

Again, We ARE taking the Guide away from a "calendar-centered" format, because organizing and presenting things the way you see here devours all the time we need to report NEWS. See the intro at the top of this edition. Enjoy the old ways while you can, because starting next go 'round, upcoming events will be reported as NEWS FEATURES along with all the other news as the Guide enters yet another new decade of serving you, our treasured readers. It'll also mean we can get back to including more pictorial content and video. Below is "old format," with the emphasis that you won't see after this week...

Sun, Jan 12, on TV:
12:30 pm-2 pm - BLUESMAN GARY CLARK, JR gets a solid performance-interview-bio treatment on today's "CBS SUNDAY MORNING," which aired too damn early at 6 am on L.A.'s network flagship. (Fortunately, you get another chance.)
*  Featured are Clark's phenomenal playing from a young age to the present, accolades from longtime music icons, his supportive parents when he began at age 12, his road to success, and Clark at home with his Australian model wife and their young children. That, btw, is on their beautiful ranch in the Texas hill country near his Austin birthplace... and there the story includes the racism that touched his childhood and resurfaced recently in the form of a redneck ranch neighbor -- which is why the title track of his latest album is "This Is My Land."
*  If you pay for the online "CBSN" package, you can catch it on demand. If you don't, and your cable or satellite package has it, watch on the POPHD channel.
*  Today's show also has a splendid story on the super-intelligent octopus, and a closing segment with kangaroos on the beach in New South Wales, fleeing the apocalyptic Aussie fires.

Mon, Jan 13, on TV:
7 am-9 am - "FESTIVAL EXPRESS" (2003) is a fascinating music documentary assembled from film shot during the 1970 "Festival Express" train across Canada, and contemporary material.
*  Many of the top music artists of the time were on board, and you see and hear performances, candid conversations, and more, from major acts including Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy, Flying Burrito Bros, Ian & Sylvia's Great Speckled Bird, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, and Rick Danko.
*  Directed by Bob Smeaton and Frank Cvitanovich. The filmed account of this large, portable Canadian rock festival train combines the long-lost material -- "a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology" -- with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.
*  The vintage concert footage alone makes "Festival Express" a memorable and worthwhile endeavor, offering scintillating and sometim4s ensemble performances. As in, Janis Joplin and the Band doing a rollicking version of "Slippin' and Slidin'", various artists interacting with the Grateful Dead, and with Buddy Guy, and others (remember Mashmakhan?).
*  The train carried all the stage and tech crew and everything needed to set up an arena stage wherever it stopped.
*  The film has concert footage and scenes of artists who, in many cases, had not previously met. As they get to know one another aboard the train during lengthy rides between concert stops, there's clowning and jamming, learning each other's songs, curling-up with new friends for naps, and hints of intimate interactions.
*  Granted, you CAN watch it on YouTube, at: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YKXialDa0aU

*  But your TV has better images and much better sound.
*  ALL airings are on AXS-TV:
•  7-9 am Mon, Jan 13
•  6-8 pm Thu, Jan 16
•  9-11 pm Thu, Jan 16
___

*  Now he is an acclaimed recording and touring artist who’s performed all around the world.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

"It is not what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable."

-- Moliere, actor and playwright (born Jan 15, 1622, died 1673; thanks to A.Word.A.Day)

Molière also said, "All the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill the history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill at dancing."
___

On this day in 1929, a baby was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and named for his father, a preacher. He would likewise grow-up to become a preacher -- and an author, orator, and America's greatest Civil Rights leader -- the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  His birthday is always celebrated on the Monday of a proximate three-day weekend; thus, this coming Mon, Jan 20, is "Martin Luther King Day," a Federal and California state holiday.

Among his many quotes that continue to enlighten our times:

"The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy."

Wed-Sun, Jan 15-19;  FESTIVAL (in Portland):

*  With Artist-in-Residence 2020 – Bruce Molsky
*  We had to show you their handcrafted design for this year's poster.
*  Belinda Thom, aka FIDDLING MAMA B, of the Southern California-based old-time string bands MODAL TEASE and HIGH STRUNG, tells us, "I’m super excited to be able to go to Portland... for the annual Portland Old Time Music Gathering, which is always a blast and where I always pick up cool new old tunes for my bands to explore when I get back."
___

Samantha Fish, on her guitar box ax.
Wed-Sat, Jan 15-18, FESTIVAL (in New Orleans):
The "NEW ORLEANS CIGAR BOX GUITAR FESTIVAL," celebrating that diminutive and other homemade instruments, was founded in 2016. It has grown exponentially in the years since. So much so, it has now partnered with award-winning musician and blues sensation SAMANTHA FISH to rebrand itself as the "SAMANTHA FISH CIGAR BOX GUITAR FESTIVAL."
*  In addition to performances from Fish, the 2020 Festival features a lineup of JOHN MOONEY, BIG CHIEF MONK BOUDREAUX and the GOLDEN EAGLES, JONATHON LONG, WAYLON THIBODEAUX, JOHNNY SANSONE, DAMON FOWLER, JIMBO MATHUS (SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS), and more.
*  Noted homemade-instrument performers APRIL MAE & THE JUNE BUGS, SUGARCANE JANE, JOHN NICKEL, CIGAR BOX SERENADERS, STEVE ARVEY, CASH O’RILEY, and others will also make appearances.
* New Orleans-based "OFFBEAT" magazine reports, "...the newly renamed festival will stick to its original concept of celebrating the cigar box guitar and other homemade instruments used throughout history by Civil War soldiers, pioneers of the Old West, farmers, street performers and others who made do with few resources. Built using everything from household items to scrap materials, these creations have played instrumental (no pun intended) roles in Americana over the years."
* "'I have included the cigar box guitar on a song or two on most of my albums (including my last single "Bullet Proof,")' said Samantha Fish in a press release. 'The instrument may look limited but there are so many sounds and styles that we haven’t discovered yet. I am looking forward to making this one of the biggest events honoring the instrument as well as other acoustic instruments that can rock.'"
*  Festival producer COLLINS KIRBY calls the partnership with Fish "a marriage made in roots music heaven," adding "She’s a contemporary artist who’s fully in touch with the traditions that inform today’s music.  We’re delighted to work with her spreading the word about the art and music of handmade instruments."
*  Events take place at Chickie Wah Wah and Howlin’ Wolf, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the New Orleans Blues Society.
*  MORE on the festival (and see their very cool title page) at:

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

My Madonna

I haled me a woman from the street,
    Shameless, but, oh, so fair!
I bade her sit in the model's seat
And I painted her sitting there.

I hid all trace of her heart unclean;
    I painted a babe at her breast;
I painted her as she might have been
If the Worst had been the Best.

She laughed at my picture and went away.
Then came, with a knowing nod,
A connoisseur, and I heard him say;
"'Tis Mary, the Mother of God."

So I painted a halo round her hair,
And I sold her and took my fee,
And she hangs in the church of Saint Hillaire,
Where you and all may see.

-- Robert W. Service, British-Canadian poet and writer, often called "the Bard of the Yukon" (born Jan 16, 1874, died 1958).

His poem, "The Cremation of Sam McGee," is a frontier classic.

We also recommend his poem, "The Men That Don't Fit In.

Sun, Jan 19; FESTIVAL:
2 pm - 13th annual "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SLACK KEY FESTIVAL" celebrates bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to the mainland, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Bl (at Aviation Bl), Redondo Beach CA  90278
*  SLACK KEY -- Hawaiian "ki ho'alu" is one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. Played from the heart and soul through the fingers and flowing with vivid tropical images, the festival lets you listen and learn the fascinating history of ki ho’alu guitar and the musical pioneers who helped shape its sound and legacy.

*  Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, the festival includes an "Island Marketplace."
*  Showcasing GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and the free-to-the-public Island Marketplace, this is one of the most acclaimed concerts to leave the islands.
*  The first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii, the Southern California Slack Key Festival continues to set milestones for Hawaiian music on the mainland. Since its debut in 2008, it has garnered a huge loyal following, creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.
* This year’s line-up includes JOHN KEAWE, JERRY SANTOS, KAMUELA KIMOKEO, THE LIM FAMILY, IKAIKA MARZO, BOBBY MODEROW, JEFF PETERSON, ANTHONY PFLUKE, and BOBBY INGANO.
*  Ki ho'alu literally means "loosen the key." It is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
*  How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.
*  In addition to the concert, an Island Marketplace – free to the public – takes place from 11 am-5 pm. You can browse a variety of island-themed gifts, home décor, accessories, apparel, and more. Plus, there's Hawaiian food, authentic island-style shave ice, and outdoor entertainment.

*  Yuliyana is a virtuoso in the art of the khomus, the national instrument of the Sakha Republic. It functions much like a Jaw harp, but differs in several respects. A conventional Jaw harp is limited in range, volume, and pitch. The khomus is loud and strikingly expansive in range.

Monday
_______________________

Today is January 20th. On this day 75 years ago, the Red Army found and liberated the starving and abused survivors of the Nazi atrocity named Auschwitz. With anti-Semitism specifically,  and intolerance generally, both on the rise in America, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and industrial-scale murder complex stands to remind us all of what is at the inevitable end of that kind of toxic thinking.
___

IN AMERICA every four years, as determined by the US constitution, January 20th is Inauguration Day. That's when the four-year term begins for an American president supposedly elected by the people the previous November, but actually elected in December by the tiny number of partisan political elite who comprise that election cycle's Electoral College.

Today in 2020 happens to be the Monday of the three-day weekend when the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated as a national holiday for federal employees and state, county and municipal employees in some jurisdictions. Now, since Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays were dropped as separate holidays and amalgamated into the nebulousity of "Presidents Day," there is no valid argument that they "can't afford another holiday." Adding MLK Day and mashing the great presidents into a day with Millard Fillmore, George W. Bush, and the other bozos, means that refusing to give you the day off today, or holiday pay for working, isn't a capitalistic thing. It's a racial thing, and we're calling them out on it.
___

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

"The true axis of evil in America is the brilliance of our marketing combined with the stupidity of our people."

"[F]reedom isn't free. It shouldn't be a bragging point that "Oh, I don't get involved in politics," as if that makes you somehow cleaner. No, that makes you derelict of duty in a republic. Liars and panderers in government would have a much harder time of it if so many people didn't insist on their right to remain ignorant and blindly agreeable."

-- Bill Maher, comedian, actor, and writer (born Jan 20, 1956)

*  We discovered her performing for Steinway piano at the 2020 NAMM Show. From a distance, we were hearing an adaptation of Bach’s famous "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" with a hint of her signature jazz rhythms and modern bold sounds. Moving toward the source, we encountered a large, transfixed crowd. Turns out it was Jolynn performing, live, her 2018 debut single, “Toccata.”
*  “Toccata” was a hit that garnered many positive reviews in magazines and media outlets including "Applause to the Musician" (USA), "One Song Magazine" (INDIA), "Asian Journeys" (SINGAPORE), and tvSarawak.com (MALAYSIA). Here's a quote from one of those reviews: “The best word to describe her personality on the ivory keys is PASSIONATELY BOLD. You will be taken away each time she hits a key on the piano” – New Sarawak Tribune.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers -- and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
