Alternatives to the "apoSTATE OF THE UNION." Tuesday, February 4 2020

Lots here. No time for a table of contents. Just jump in.

Let's get started!

Are you baffled by the title? It's not a typo.

An "apostate" is one who commits apostasy. "Apostasy" is the formal disaffiliation from, abandonment of, or renunciation of a religion by a person. And since American democracy was traditionally regarded as a "civil religion"...

New York Post cover proclaims, "Duh Moines"

There isn't a newspaper in America that's missing out on the smackdown. But most are missing what's most glaring to us.

It isn't just that the Iowa Democratic Party organization had an epic fail. Yes, they were inscrutably oblivious to the need to train their flocks of volunteers before making them responsible for running the rather Byzantine Iowa Caucuses. It seems they trotted-out a brand-new, esoteric app that was supposed to run the show. There was no beta testing, either. Just jump in with both feet and make it so. Why does it seem predictable that it wouldn't work? Because it was utterly dumb. IF that's even the real story. The company thst sold the Iowa Democratic Party the secret new app has been selling its services to the Buttigieg and Biden campaigns for some time.

We're here to declare that all that is not the biggest failure. Because we can't believe the disgraceful performance of American corporate cable "news," spending the entire evening, then all night, doing nothing but "analyzing" results they didn't have... crunching numbers that didn't exist... locked into a one-dimensional singularity with no resources, no knowledge... yet they couldn't even think of discussing anything else.

Meanwhile, over on the BBC, their staff OF JOURNALISTS continued to present the news OF THE WORLD, with maybe three minutes an hour going to report that Iowa was a clusterf**k, devoid of data.

What a contrast. We characterize it like this: "Since there's nothing to report here, we're moving on" (BBC), vs. an endless rehash of "Let's look at what the Iowa outcome would tell us if we had an Iowa outcome" (CNN, MSNBC, et. al.)

Can your day possibly be devoid of suspicion, given that the pink-eyed orange ogre is set to ruin it for all of us with his "apoSTATE OF THE UNION" tonight?

Politics: poly, meaning more than one; ticks, being blood-sucking parasites.

THOUGHTS FOR TODAY from two born on this date...

"... art blows life into the lifeless, death into the deathless."

-- Robert Coover,  American novelist and short-story writer.

And, especially resonant today...

"There comes a point when a man must refuse to answer to his leader if he is also to answer to his own conscience."

-- Hartley Shawcross, barrister, politician, and prosecutor at the Nuremberg War Crimes tribunal (born Feb 4, 1902, died 2003)

___

On this day in 1789, in its first-ever outing, the Electoral College unanimously elected George Washington as first President of the United States under the new Constitution. We've been stuck with that damn Electoral College -- a vestige of tipping the scales for the slave states to have more representation -- ever since.

Tonight on TV...

"RUBY RIDGE" on the PBS series, "The American Experience"

Tune in (except in L.A., where we all must STREAM it), beginning tonight at 6 pm Pacific.

"Ruby Ridge" is a riveting account of the event that helped give rise to the modern American militia movement, and concentrate the majority of guns in America into the hands of a few who are armed to the teeth, with massive hordes of ammunition.

When the Weaver family moved to the remote hills of northern Idaho, they sought a retreat from a rapidly changing world — and the U.S. government.

Charged with selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns to an undercover agent, Randy Weaver had failed to appear in court and law enforcement was tasked with bringing him in. For months, the Weavers had been holed up on their property with a cache of firearms, including automatic weapons. When the federal agents surveilling the property crossed paths with members of the family, a firefight broke out.

Some PBS stations, including those in Los Angeles, have alternative programming tonight. So, stream this film online beginning tonight at 6 pm Pacific, at:

New music, out today...

Singer Songwriter David Myles Premieres “Leave Tonight” in Advance of New Album and Tour

Does anybody invoke Buddy Holly
more than David Myles?
O
ut today, February 4th, Canadian singer-songwriter David Myles premieres his first single, “Leave Tonight,” via GLIDE MAGAZINE, and his team is sharing it with us. The cut is the title track from the album of the same name. The collection, his 12th, will be released on May 8th. It’s the follow-up to 2018’s award-winning album, "Real Love."

He has a lot of character to his voice, and applied to this song, he has a winner we're sure you will like.

GLIDE describes “Leave Tonight” as “…reminiscent of Roy Orbison’s majestic sense of melancholy replete with dreamy harmony vocals… there is power in the musical simplicity that complements the heartfelt, romantic lyrics. The song showcases Myles’ ability to fuse folk and classic pop sounds.”

The project was produced by James Bunton and features longtime touring and recording bandmates Kyle Cunjak (upright bass, electric bass) and Alan Jeffries (acoustic and electric guitars). The trio have been friends since high school and have worked together for over a decade. Rounding out the sessions was percussionist Joshua Van Tassel who has played on many of David’s previous records.

Leave Tonight’s collection of ten songs has at its core a romantic essence coupled with a side of chill and sophistication. Equal parts americana, breezy ballads, folk, and pop ear-worms - the album's lush vibe gently transports listeners on a dreamy ride.

David Myles' tour dates will be announced shortly covering all of North America, beginning next month and continuing through 2020.

Stream and enjoy the single via GLIDE:

Why ACTIVISM matters...

"TELL THE BEACH BOYS TO STOP SUPPORTING TROPHY HUNTING!"

That's how Eduardo Goncalves titled his online petition to Beach Boys Manager Elliott Lott. Things have taken-off from there, including in newspapers around the world.

Eduardo wrote:

“Wouldn't it be nice if all the Beach Boys, Stayed away from those who kill for fun?”

On Wednesday, February 5th, the Beach Boys are headlining at the "Safari Club International Convention" in Reno, Nevada, at which Donald Trump Jr is the keynote speaker.

The Safari Club International convention is the world’s biggest wildlife killing market – a staggering 870 companies will be selling trophy hunting holidays and wildlife body parts including animal heads this year. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting predicts that US hunters will shoot an estimated 20,000 animals from protected species this year. Most trophy hunts are sold at these conventions.Trophies traded by American hunters in the past decade include endangered right whales, Hawksbill turtles, Bald eagles, chimpanzees, sloth bears and grey parrots.Previous SCI Conventions have seen companies selling ‘canned lion’ hunts – where tame lions are bred and shot in enclosures for low-cost trophies – as well as illegal wildlife body parts for trinkets and furniture, including benches made from elephant skin, paintings on elephant ears, a hippo skull table, and shark skin belts.Safari Club International has spent an astonishing $140 million since 2000 lobbying against laws to stop trophy hunting – or what it calls “protecting the freedom to hunt”...

Dear Beach Boys Manager Elliott Lott,

We the undersigned pledge to stop buying or downloading all Beach Boys music, going to Beach Boys concerts, and purchasing any Beach Boys merchandise until the Beach Boys withdraw from the SCI Convention and publicly state their opposition to this sick ‘sport’ of killing animals for ‘fun’.

We will call on the Beach Boys' record label, agent and publicists to disown the Beach Boys, and on members of the public to protest at forthcoming Beach Boys concerts, unless they do so.

Well. Beach Boys co-founders Brian Wilson & Al Jardine saw it, and SIGNED the petition, stating they were in agreement with Eduardo.

Nonetheless, as Eduardo writes, "Despite huge media coverage, global UPROAR - and being publicly DISOWNED by co-founders Brian Wilson & Al Jardine - Mike Love’s Beach Boys are going ahead with their concert tonight at the world’s largest Trophy Hunting convention."

He continues, "So why not TWEET @MikeLoveOFCL @TheBeachBoys @SafariClubIntl and let them know you think murdering animals for ‘fun’ is WRONG..."

Here are TWO things you can do right now to help end this sick "sport":

1.       From anywhere in the world: Email the U.K. government Trophy Hunting consultation desk at huntingtrophyconsultation@defra.gov.uk to say “I support Option 3 - a Total Ban”. The British government is consulting on whether to ban hunting trophies. Anyone can participate – have your say!

2.       If you’re in the UK, you can also copy/paste “Please support EDM 50 - Ban on Trophy Hunting imports” & send to your local MP via https://writetothem.com/?a=westminstermp . EDM50 is a cross-party parliamentary motion in support of a trophy hunting ban

Eduardo tells us, "Thank you again for signing and helping raise awareness of this horrible ‘hobby’ practised by heartless thrill-killers. Together we can – and WILL – ban trophy hunting. For GOOD."

AND, of course...

You can sign the petition at:

LOS ANGELES, CA, Feb 4 — Two great voices weaving together beautifully is one of the most basic and durable concepts in music, and Carla Olson returns to it on her new album "Have Harmony, Will Travel 2," arriving March 20th on Sunset Blvd. Records.

The album features the veteran Texas-bred, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-producer doing duets with 11 guests. It's the successor to 2013’s "Have Harmony, Will Travel," which found Olson collaborating vocally with artists Peter Case, Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield), John York (the Byrds), Scott Kempner (the Del-Lords), and Juice Newton.

Like the previous collection, "Have Harmony, Will Travel 2" was inspired by Olson’s youthful days as an aspiring musician, when she marveled at the diverse sounds she heard on Austin’s top-40 station KNOW.

She recalls, “You’d hear everything from ‘Love Is Blue’ by Paul Mauriat to The Zombies. Even before I got into high school, I had a wonderful variety of music hitting me. I had this catalog of songs in my head that I wanted to play with a band, or I’d hear a vocalist who maybe wouldn’t have done a particular song, actually recording that song.

“Very often,” she adds, “a singer will think that they’re not capable of doing a song that I’ve asked them to do, or that it wouldn’t fit them stylistically, but I’ll hear something in that voice that beckoned me to get them to sing it.”

Produced by Olson, the second "Have Harmony" set sports an eclectic lineup of talents that includes Timothy B. Schmitt, bassist-vocalist of the Eagles; Peter Noone of the British Invasion band Herman’s Hermits; singer’s singer Terry Reid; Stephen McCarthy, vocalist and guitarist of L.A.’s “Paisley Underground” group the Long Ryders; and the album’s lone featured instrumentalist, original Bee Gees guitarist Vince Melouney.

In addition to duo performances with multilingual vocalist Ana Gazzola and singer-songwriter Jim Muske, the album surveys Olson’s collaborations with two-time Emmy-winning actress-singer Mare Winningham, the brawny roots-rock band I See Hawks in L.A., legendary soul man Percy Sledge, and The Byrds’ masterful co-founder Gene Clark.

Carla Olson & Stephen McCarthy
Most of the featured musicians on "Have Harmony, Will Travel 2" are Olson’s longtime associates. Though Stephen McCarthy played on "So Rebellious a Lover," Olson’s 1987 duet project with Gene Clark that followed her work in The Textones, the two musicians had never sung together until a 2018 benefit Buffalo Springfield tribute with the Wild Honey Orchestra.

“We did ‘Burned,’ and I loved singing with him,” Olson says. “It was really a treat to find how our voices blended together.” For their first recorded duet, they essayed Patty Loveless’ 1988 hit “Timber, I’m Falling in Love.”

Olson’s friendship with Noone dates back to the singer’s work in his ’80s band the Tremblers with the late Phil Seymour, another close associate. He selected The Searchers’ U.K. hit “Goodbye My Love” as his track.

Noone’s participation in the project was a thrill for Schmit, a cornerstone of the Eagles lineup since 1977. Olson remembers, “When he saw Peter in the studio, he sort of snuck down the hallway and said, ‘Uh, uh, Peter … I saw you in Sacramento when I was 15!’ It was his childhood hero. Man, did he freak out!”

She continues, “Approaching Timothy B. Schmit seemed awkward at first, because he’s such a big star. But he is so sweet, so kind, and so generous with his time. I had cut his Eagles song ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’ with Chubby Tavares, and that was kind of a door-opener.” The pair perform Richie Furay’s Buffalo Springfield standard, “A Child’s Claim to Fame.”

Olson says of Terry Reid, “I saw him open for Cream in 1968 in Dallas, and he damn near blew ’em off the stage. I’ve known Terry for a long time — I met him through Mick Taylor back in the late ’80s or early ’90s, when Mick and I did our album together."

She continues, “He is definitely one of the most interesting voices in rock ’n’ roll. I had the idea to do a very tender, sweet song with that gravelly voice of his. I wanted him to sing ‘Scarlet Ribbons’ with that odd cadence that he has — it’s not in time. That’s his style! We added a cello to it — it was cut to ‘Terry time!’ It makes me cry when I hear it.”

Olson’s track with Vince Melouney, who appeared on all the Bee Gees’ career-making early albums, revisits “Shackles and Chains,” a John Stewart number they performed together at a tribute to the late songwriter at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena CA. “I had never played the song,” she says. “I thought of it as a Johnny Cash kind of arrangement of what John Stewart did with his band. Vince plays all the lead guitar on it.”

The newest tracks on "Have Harmony, Will Travel 2" are rounded-out by a rambunctious version of Stephen Stills’ “Uno Mundo” by Ana Gazzola, whose 2012 album of Portuguese-language Bee Gees covers was produced by Olson, and the vocal debut of Minnesota singer-songwriter Jim Muske, who performs his own composition “Haunting Me.” Olson says of the latter track, “Jim goes back with us for decades, as a musician and as a friend. He hadn’t sung in years, and he has a tremendous voice. He came in and just nailed the vocal.”

Wrapping with her tracks with Winningham (from a Spanish hits compilation by Olson), Sledge (backed by Mick Taylor, from Olson’s 1994 collection "Reap the Whirlwind"), and I See Hawks in L.A. (from their 2009 album "Shoulda Been Gold"), "Have Harmony, Will Travel" concludes with a duo rendition of “Del Gato,” a powerful Western ballad from Olson and Gene Clark’s 1987 album "So Rebellious a Lover," which proved to be Clark’s final release before his death in 1991.

“That song was something Gene was just playing for us in his living room,” Olson recalls. “We thought it was a standard! It sounds like something by the Sons of the Pioneers. We sang that song for fun — we didn’t know we were going to make a record. To sing that song was such a joy to me. It’s hard to not be able to sing that song today.”

Songs she does sing today -- with & Stephen McCarthy and guests Johnny Indovina, Rob Waller and John York -- will be center stage in the auditory showroom of McCabes, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica CA 90405, on February 21st.
