Quickie editorial about weighty times...
There are 23 Senate Republicans up for reelection in 2020.
Let's take the fight to every single one. Only Mitt Romney of Utah had the integrity to defy the threats of his party and vote to find the Orange ogre -- who is so blatantly guilty of the crimes that were clearly proven in the case brought by the House of Representatives Impeachment Managers.
So, now, we are left with a dangerous precedent that will surely wreak havoc on American democracy in ways we cannot begin to imagine. That is this:
A trial without witnesses and documents is a cover-up. PERIOD.
Senate Republicans had the chance to do the right thing, but all of them -- except Romney -- chose party loyalty over patriotism.
That crowd of Trump butt-kissers all deserve to be VOTED OUT.
Not that we are enamored with all Democratic Party candidates or office-holders. We are not, because too damn many of THEM are in bed with the corporatists and big money interests. But today's Republican Party is indisputably corrupt because it chooses to have no integrity, it chooses to allow to languish -- on Mitch McConnell's morgue of a desk, without any action whatsoever -- over 400 pieces of legislation passed by the House of Representatives, and it chooses to protect and embrace a vindictive, self-serving, Trumpertantrum-throwing, spoiled child of a man who has publicly lied over 16,000 times since taking office just over three years ago.
The nonpartisan "Common Cause" wrote today, "With a blank check from the Senate's sham impeachment trial in hand, Donald Trump is out for revenge. He's starting to lash out against those who put their loyalty to the country ahead of their loyalty to him."
They continue, with a shocking specific: "[The latest target is] Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert who was on the fated July 25th phone call where Trump tried to extort an investigation into the Bidens from Ukrainian President Zelensky. Vindman later testified before the House about what he heard on the call."
"Today, Lt. Col. Vindman was pushed out of his role at the National Security Council -- and escorted from the White House."
Common Cause concludes, "Vindman did this country a great service. He felt, in his words, a 'sense of duty' to tell the American people the truth -- and now, that honorable act has cost him his job, his career, and his privacy."
Obviously, Lt. Col. Vindman deserves better, as will others who are targeted in the witch hunt that Trump has finally found -- by being its perpetrator. But what about the big picture? What about the rest of us?
Do we deserve better? Only if we are willing to speak truth to power, stand up to corruption and injustice, put protection of the weak and voiceless, and protection of the planet, over profits and payola, over funneling public resources into private hands, and over making stock dividends more important than serving the people's needs. Only if we are committed to getting to work, and fighting for what's better.
That is the task before us -- each of us, and all of us.
Ask questions. Never accept partisan or corporate "talking points." Beware of who is behind what you see on social media. Never be content with pat answers from self-serving interests who always put profit before people. Stir things up and see what's at the bottom of the pot. Be a burr under the saddle of somebody who rides too high and mighty. Put yourself out -- while you still can.
Or accept the judgement of a future that will be baffled by all that was lost in our time.

In Memorium...
Kirk Douglas has died. There is a wonderful story on him at the link below. To which we add our own thoughts, below that link.
The Washington Post: Kirk Douglas, whose masculine energy powered scores of film roles, dies at 103
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/kirk-douglas-whose-masculine-energy-powered-scores-of-film-roles-dies-at-103/2020/02/05/644bf452-4875-11ea-b4d9-29cc419287eb_story.html
He was one hundred and three years old. What a run. The guy who ended the Hollywood "Black List" of the McCarthy Era. The guy who ended the veritable slavery of the Hollywood "Studio System." Oh-so-many accomplishments, on screen and off.
We'll always remember seeing him on the late night talk shows after his stroke. It was brave of him AND of the hosts and producers to go on-air in a format that is taped real-time and isn't edited. He made you forget that he struggled to speak and be understood. His confidence and his sheer joy at being there to share with an audience was transcendent. Such a joie de vivre.
He had written a book, and it seemed that making the tv rounds to promote it -- the usual promo thing -- would just follow the pattern.
But of course it couldn't be, given the effects of his stroke.
Who could have expected how compelling, how uplifting, he would be in those essentially live tv interviews, nakedly displaying the heart and soul of the macho strong man as he faced and adapted to his sudden disabilities?
As memorable as his big screen roles had been, those last roles on the small screen really stay with you. Yep, what a run.

* Tif was born & raised in Texas but has been living in Canada for the last 5 years. McCabes' promo says, "She is slowly freezing to death. To postpone her inevitable demise, she tours relentlessly with her husband, preferable in warmer climates as often as she can. These days music is discussed in terms of likes, hits, shares, and downloads -- these terms are negated when true passion and love for the love of it comes shining through. The love and the love of it comes shining through not only in Tif Ginn's work; but in her stage presence and her general attitude toward life. Her impressive, sultry vocals and glorious harmonies with Fred, along with her multiple instrumental additions to the show, will have you in awe. This girl has it all, including Fred."

Sun, Feb 9; FORUM:
This event features newly-filmed interviews with JULIAN ASSANGE, NOAM CHOMSKY, and DANIEL ELLSBERG, in addition to a superb panel (see the list below).
The charges Julian Assange faces are an existential threat to press freedom. After being forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian Embassy, Assange is now in a high security prison in London where he faces extradition to the United States and imprisonment for the rest of his life. (Despite the fact that he was arrested in Britain on charges stemming from a DISMISSED case in Sweden, that had NO RELATION to the US.)
At this forum, distinguished lawyers and activists will explore the vitally important journalistic role Julian Assange has played in exposing the lawlessness of the US government and the threat posed by his prosecution to everyone who believes in freedom of the press.
Featured speakers:

7:30 pm - "THE ROADHOUSE SERIES" presents "TRIO," a tribute to the legendary collaboration of LINDA RONSTADT, DOLLY PARTON, & EMMYLOU HARRIS, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena CA
* When Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris came together in 1987 for the Trio sessions three unique voices joined creative forces to make some of the best music of the day.
* Thirty years later those recordings -- that yielded two albums and an anthology box-set of the sessions -- have become important historic "summit" documentation that continues to influence young country and Americana roots artists today.
* All three legendary singers have become icons of great American music while their unique streams of contributions include traditional country, country-rock, folk, and pop music.
* This show highlights the collaborations that made the Trio albums famous, and will also cover the scope of each artist’s careers.
* DOLLY PARTON’s career was heavily influenced by her mentor, Porter Wagoner who brought the honky-tonk music of the post-1950s Hank Williams years. Dolly and Porter would score a multitude of country-western hits in The 1960s before she went on to a prolific career of her own that included platinum album and singles, films, television, & books.
* LINDA RONSTADT began her career in the Stone Ponies where her cover of the Monkee, Mike Nesmith’s song, “Different Drum” propelled her to a career that would pioneer country-rock music along with The Eagle and Jackson Browne, but, later she would also champion Pop-Rock, Big Band Vocal Jazz and Canción Ranchera music from Mexico.
* EMMYLOU HARRIS’ voice is practically synonymous with pure, fine country music but she began recording working with Gram Parson’s Cosmic American Music of The Flying Burrito Brothers. Today she is firmly recognized as one of the finest living country singers n the tradition of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.
* The Roadhouse Series cast includes formidable L.A. ONGOING, PODCAST, on-demand:
"RECORDING ARTISTS: RADICAL WOMEN" is a new podcast series from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In it, art historian HELEN MOLESWORTH explores the lives and work of six artists — ALICE NEEL, LEE KRASNER, BETYE SAAR, HELEN FRANKENTHALER, YOKO ONO, and EVA HESSE.
* What was it like to be a woman making art during the feminist and civil rights movements? In this season of "Recording Artists," Molesworth delves into their lives and careers, spanning several generations. Hear them describe, in their own words, their work, relationships, and feelings about the ongoing march of feminism. Contemporary artists and art historians join the conversation, offering their own perspectives on the recordings and exploring what it meant—and still means—to be a woman and an artist. Share this with one who'll appreciate it.
* HERE'S THE LINK. The whole series is here in individial episodes so you can pace yourself or binge it. You'll hear rare audiotaped interviews and fresh perspectives on what it meant — and still means — to be a woman making art:

* This is "A gorgeous mile of fruit and flower garland wallpaper in a gradient of saturated hues containing within its two story installation multiple scenarios and vignettes of photography and ceramic, faux Grecian luxury statues, gilded mirrors, chaises and sundry objects. All of this exists in the mode of a secular temple to beauty, as well as a sort of public living room where communities are formed through the universal language of shareable fruit."
* Might be the right thing for a memorable date.
