Wonderful things await this weekend and next, right here on your cyber link to live performances. Plus we have lots of music news and a delightful artist profile.
Venues are starting to reopen. We're not quite sure how we feel about that, since some of those intransigent anti-vaxers may cough-sneeze-breath their Typhoid Mary-ness all over the conscientious masses. We're going on-record in support of venues that require COVID vaccination cards for entry. Wanna go to an indoor space with others you don't know, then deal with it.
Okay, necessary point made. Now check out la musica!

Artist Spotlight...
Original Folk Music at Prestigious Film Festivals
|
Moira Smiley is, by far, one of the most talented people we've ever known.
She's fresh from a performance today with TUNE-YARDS on "CBS This Morning -- Saturday," where they did three songs. (Go get 'em now, or you'll be in the show's archive after next Saturday.)
She is the genius behind her own group, VOCO, and a Vermont-based go-to artist for all-things musical. Accomplished as singer, song-collector, choreographer (her body percussion stylings are dazzling), and commissioned composer, Moira Smiley has sung in arenas, cathedrals, kitchens, back porches, sound stages, and on glaciers.
She's performed with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Tune-Yards, Tim O'Brien, Eric Whitacre, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, New World Symphony, Solas, and The Lyris String Quartet.
As a composer, Moira Smiley is known worldwide for choral arrangements like "Bring Me a Little Water, Silvy" and her originals, "Stand in That River" and "How Can I Cry." (Two of those were first heard in broadcast live performance on our old "Tied to the Tracks" radio show in Los Angeles.) She's in demand as a commissioned composer, writing multi-movement pieces like "Time In Our Voices" and "In The Desert With You" for the Los Angeles Master Chorale. She wrote "Vonnegut Requiem: Light Perpetual," for Voces Novae, and more.
And now come the film festival honors. "Sing About It," the music video by Moira Smiley and VOCO, is a song from their album, "In Our Voices."
At just over four minutes, it's one of the shortest features accepted to multiple prestigious film festivals around the world!
☆ Enjoy it at:

☆ You should also check out the TED TALK / performance by Moira and VOCO at Caltech:

☆ And while you're admiring Moira's work, traditional music aficionados who appreciate fresh vitality that sounds like a hundred years ago, but in a new way -- and those who pursue historical connections -- will greatly enjoy...

We would bring you more, but... We're at the limits of what Google will let us publish.
Since they brought their hegemonistic conquering -- their penchant for Borg-like assimilation, where resistance is futile -- their forced changes to this platform include undeclared, but very real, limits to what we can publish. If we attempt more, we can lose everything that's already in here.
We hope we chose things you have enjoyed. And despite that futility of resistance, we do persist.
