Tue, May 10
Today in remote Promontory, Utah, in barren hills north of the Great Salt Lake, the National Park Service; some traditional / historical-music musicians; a troupe of reenactor / actors; and a pair of re-created 19th century locomotives; reenact the feat of the age -- the driving of the Golden Spike that completed the first Transcontinental Railroad.
Before the completion of the rails, it had taken four months to reach California by wagon train. Now it would take four days by steam train.
The builders had no dynamite -- it had not yet been invented. Yet the Irish immigrant workforce employed by the Union Pacific had built their railroad across the Great South Pass of the Rocky Mountains, and the Chinese immigrant workforce of the Central Pacific had done the impossible, cutting tunnels and granite ledges for the track across the mighty Sierra.
A stretch of track would bypass the Golden Spike site in the 20th century, with a wooden trestle across the Great Salt Lake. The place where the world was forever changed was nearly forgotten until a 100-year re-enactment happened on May 10, 1969.

For MOTHERS DAY, we have something moving, and very timely: words from JULIA WARD HOWE (May 27, 1819 – October 17, 1910).
Hers was a time when women were culturally prevented from doing much that influenced society. Yet she, as the Boston poet, pacifist and women's suffragist and American author, is known, too, as an American songwriter-lyricist for writing the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." In her 1861 redux for the melody of the abolitionist anthem "John Brown's Body," her new lyrics became the de facto National Anthem for decades until the "Star-Spangled Banner" was officially designated. (We have music listening links farther down.)
It's more meaningful on THIS day that she wrote something else: the original 1870 pacifist "Mother's Day Proclamation." That was in the wake of the Civil War, and Mothers Day was launched -- exactly when, at scale, is argued -- but launched by her words, as a pacifists' celebration, a day for moms to advocate for peace.
Here's her proclamation for the very first Mother's Day, even if few took part:
"Arise, all women who have hearts, Whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country, to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: Disarm, disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence vindicate possession."

So Julia's proclamation was made in 1870. But it wasn't until 1872 that Julia is really credited as establishing a special day for mothers -- and for peace -- not long after the bloody Franco-Prussian War, rather than the American Civil War.
American history is messy. On top of that little discrepancy, Julia -- who was a mom -- is not the first mother of Mothers Day. That iconic i.d. falls to Anna Jarvis' mom, when Anna held a public memorial 38 years later in 1908 for her own mother in her little hometown of Grafton, West Virginia. Never heard of Grafton? Today's population of under 6,000 belies its past as a junction point for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, coal mining and transshipment hub, and, today, for its fishing and its iconic Mother's Day Shrine.
But that year, 1908, is given as the first large-scale celebration of the holiday -- in Anna's tiny town of Grafton, not Julia's big city of Boston. After that, the Fraternal Order of Elks championed the day, and it remains an annual emphasis in every Elks lodge everywhere today.
So, officially, the American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it as America's day to honor moms.
Anna Jarvis isn't done, though, despite being in a backwoods coal town. She would increasingly denounce the holiday's commercialization.
Together with journalist-authors like Upton Sinclair, whose 1906 book, "The Jungle," helped topple the rich empire of the Gilded Age, they would be among the key voices attacking America's comfortable gullibility that allowed itself to be manipulated by commercial profit-making and exploited by an iconic rich class. All amidst working-class poverty, lack of social supports, the rich turning themselves into a welfare class sucking-up all government revenues and resources and refusing tax liabilities, harsh and unpleasant living and working conditions for the masses, the marketing of processed food that went uninspected and was sometimes deadly, and widespread hopelessness among America's 7-day-a-week, 12-hour-day workers.
(Shades of today, with all your private information being sold by social media moguls making themselves richer than anyone, ever, though producing nothing; Amazon and Starbucks workers trying to unionize in the face of bullying gazillionaire oligarchs; and, prevailing corporatocratic centralization, overconsolidation, vertical and horizontal monopolies, hostile takeovers, leveraged and outright buyouts, and mergers and elimination of competition. Maybe we are not so advanced today, after all. Gads, it's enough to make you want your mommy.)
Back to Julia Ward Howe. Julia was also an advocate for the abolition of slavery before the Civil War -- and she remained a social activist of great influence who aggravated the hell out of the power elite, particularly for women's rights to vote.
So in the complicated pantheon of who is responsible for why we give flowers and chocolates to moms? We take this moment to remember the words that are credited not just as a way for bringing us MOTHERS DAY as a day for moms, but alongside a power-to-the-people / stop-commercialization-of-EVERYTHING / end-control-by-the-rich, as part of an anti-materialist, pro-humanist movement, and rather specifically as a holiday for peace -- starting way back in 1870 and extending into the early 20th century. We think that is worth remembering in these fraught times of 100+ years later.
Still, there is more to Julia than even that much.
♡ A Pulitzer Prize-winning Biography of their mother was published after her death at age 91, written by Howe's children, Laura, Maud, and Florence, who collaborated on "Julia Ward Howe, 1819–1910." Published in 1916, it can still be found in recent editions and is a classic of women's history in America.
♡ In 1987, Julia Ward Howe was honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a 14¢ "Great Americans" series postage stamp. (It only cost 14¢ to mail a letter in 1987? Wha' happened?!)

Yes, COVID is still out there
Jaynee Thorne and Stardust Concerts did an email blast on Friday, April 29, at 1:33 pm. It was mid afternoon on the day of the show (an outdoor house concert listed in The Guide). Jayne wrote:
"TONIGHT'S SHOW CANCELLED! COVID POSITIVE RESULT!
"Hi STARDUST friends......TONIGHT'S SHOW IS CANCELLED!
Yes, you read correctly... STARDUST SHOW OF FRIDAY APRIL 29 CANCELLED!!!!!
"Well .... previous to this morning I would have said... that JaKL goes on first and we are starting promptly at 7... however, I just tested positive for Covid! I am fully vaxxed and boosted... I talked to my doctor and he says cancel the show. Even if I left the building... (the house...) my cells are in the air...it wouldn't be responsible to have the show.
"Please stay tuned to my emails for upcoming shows... we have a few already set up.... We will be having a show in May so please stay tuned! ... I was to looking forward to presenting the new trio... and now have to follow the rules for health safety. I hope you are well. Stay that way! If it's not over, NOW what?
Festivals are coming back. Yet many music venues still require proof of vaccination and/or masks. Some individuals wearing masks in stores report receiving derisive comments from unmasked people. So what is sensible, and what are the latest facts?
Gads. BA-4, BA-5, BA-2121. The latest variants, and not for the sake of science geeks who have more to study in the lab. Each of those variants continues the trend seen with COVID variants to date: each is a more contagious variant than the one before, AND is, so far, less severe.
But, "We know that a more contagious virus that is less severe will kill more people than a less contagious virus that is more severe," says Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding, renowned epidemiologist, Chief of COVID Task Force at the New England Complex Systems Institute, and Chief Health Economist for Microclinic International. He was formerly a faculty member and researcher at Harvard Medical School and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
He continues, "If you are not three-shot boosted, you are significantly at risk. Right now things may look rosey, but... The long term impact of long COVID on our society is such that it is morally reprehensible to act like it doesn't matter."
Dr. Feigl-Ding has himself had COVID, despite being fully vaccinated. Three weeks ago, his young son brought it home from school. Before anyone realized it, the whole house had it. Despite being fully vaxxed and being able to start a course of antiviral drugs, the doctor went through days of chills and fever. His cough seemed to clear up, but returned and is pervasive.
He says home tests are not reported as incidents of infection or contagion. Even as an epidemiologist, he had no means to report his family's home-test-confirmed infection. He said it would have been irresponsible to expose others, standing in line, to go to a public test center after he knew he had COVID.
Thus, current numbers are an undercount. He says a better way to track whether infections are growing or falling is wastewater testing. And that is showing increasing infection rates.
Dr. Feigl-Ding's advice?
Mask up in public places, in stores and on airplanes. He says he would wear an N-95 mask if he had to fly anywhere. And whether you are going no farther than local events, or on tour or traveling? "Get your booster," he says.

Instruments needed for prison guitar class; shakers, drums
Singer-songwriter recording artist Joan Enguita tells us, "I am currently teaching a new guitar class at the local state prison. Some inmates expect to be there for many years. A custody officer once told me he was glad to see inmates bringing in guitars because it helps them to think about something good."
Joan continues, "There are many levels in this class, some very new to guitar, some with no guitar, and several who play well already and have a guitar. The class takes place in the chapel and is called FAITH GUITAR. I actually prefer teaching in the chapel. There are no specific religious activities for this class. They do perform periodically out on the yard.
"Soooo, a friend of mine had a guitar that no one used anymore, and no one in his family wanted it. He donated it to me for a student in another chapel. It went to a young man who LOVES that guitar! I wish you could have seen his face the day I brought it in."
Joan is asking for your help.
"Do you have an old, inexpensive guitar, or shakers, or small drums gathering dust, that are not being used?
"Would you consider donating to the C yard FAITH GUITAR class? (If you are within her local area, Joan says she would be happy to pick up.)
"Do you have a friend who may have such an item, or be interested in donating?"

The Pasadena Folk Music Society partnered with John McCutcheon for four online concerts this spring. This final one will be the most quintessentially McCutcheon. While the earlier ones featured folk-music traditions, a trio of songwriters and five instrumentalists, this one is all about songs that McCutcheon has written himself. He'll sing some of the best from his hundred-plus songbook, and he'll tell stories about his inspirations for them.
The late Pete Seeger sang high praise for this disciple: "John McCutcheon is not only one of the best musicians in the USA, but also a great singer, songwriter, and song leader. And not just incidentally, he is committed to helping hard-working people everywhere to organize and push this world in a better direction."
Seeger didn't mention McCutcheon's knack for storytelling, but a reviewer for the Washington Post did: "[John McCutcheon] has an uncanny ability to breathe new life into the familiar. His storytelling has the richness of fine literature." The International Storytelling Center says McCutcheon has "a storytelling style compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor."

May 5, 2022, Kansas City, MO - Folk Alliance International, (FAI), a 501(c)3 foremost global nonprofit for folk music, has confirmed the 34th annual Folk Alliance International Conference to take place May 18-22, 2022 in Kansas City, MO. The event will be held in a hybrid format: in person as well as online.
FAI, producers of the International Folk Music Awards presented by Yamaha, announced this year’s upcoming recipients and Best of 2021 nominees in a livestream this afternoon.

FAI is thrilled to announce beloved jazz and blues artist Madeleine Peyroux and Crown-honored English folk music icon Shirley Collins as keynote presenters for its thirty-fourth annual conference, to be held May 18-22 in hybrid format, live in Kansas City, MO, and online from anywhere.
Announced in 2020 in conjunction with the release of FAI’s draft cultural equity statement, and following a year of internal training with BIPOC*-owned Team Dynamics, FAI is thrilled to introduce FAI’s Cultural Equity Council. The council is a formal arms-length listening body independent of the FAI Board and staff with the goal to make equity recommendations to inform FAI’s new strategic plan, moving from initiatives to policy.
Led by co-convenors Karima Daoudi and Dom Flemons, the Council members include Paula Boggs, Mercedes Caxaj, Elexa Dawson, Reggie Harris, Justin Hiltner, Umair Jaffar, Janice Jo Lee, Lilli Lewis, Jacquelyn Marushka, and Charlie Mosbrook.
FAI announced its 2022 Artist in Residence (AIR) project; a commissioned piece by Canadian multi-instrumentalist Saskia Tomkins in partnership with The Mixed Museum in London, England. For the project, Tomkins is composing an instrumental piece weaving Roma, traditional fiddle, and blues elements to accompany a narrated photo/video essay exploring her family’s search to find her grandfather, a segregated African-American G.I. forbidden to marry his white girlfriend and required to return to the US while his daughter (Saskia’s mother) was twice forced into an orphanage as part of England’s buried and rarely-discussed “Brown Babies/half-castes” era.
Tomkins is a master of violin/fiddle, viola, cello, and nyckelharpa. She is classically trained with a folk background, holds a B.A. (Hons) in Music (Jazz), and won the All Britain Champion Irish Fiddler Award. She has appeared with countless artists including The Chieftains and she is credited with developing the celtic elements of the Broadway hit “Come From Away.” She performs solo, with multiple ensembles, and is part of several orchestras.
Capacity at the in-person event will be limited to 2,000 delegates, and as announced in May, proof of vaccination will be required to attend, and masks will be required indoors at all times other than dining or for artists while on stage. FAI will monitor the pandemic and exceed all local, state, federal and CDC guidelines for safe gathering, and should it be required, FAI reserves the right to move the event entirely online with a hassle-free full reimbursement policy.
The 2022 conference theme is "Living Traditions" and will showcase various regional, national and international traditional folk music forms in performance as well as exploring topics of music preservation, migration, evolution, and authenticity. It will be presented in panels, performances, keynotes, screenings, and discussions.
In addition to the NEA (National Education Association)-funded "Folklorists’ Summit," presented in collaboration with the American Folklore Society, an online summit will be convened on the topic of "Centering Disability in the Music Industry."
Other confirmed programming offerings include an event-preparedness "Art of Mass Gathering" full-day training session, "Wisdom of the Elders," and "Preserving Traditions."
Keynote Presenters
Madeleine Peyroux is a world-renowned jazz, blues, and folk artist whose 2004 breakthrough album Careless Love went platinum internationally. Born in Athens, Georgia, Peyroux got her start as a teenager busking the streets of Paris’ Latin Quarter.
Offering compelling original material and insightful interpretations of classics and modern tunes by the likes of Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, and Leonard Cohen, she has recorded with Allen Toussaint, Walter Becker (of Steely Dan), Marc Ribot, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Bill Wyman (of the Rolling Stones) and sung on stage with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Her atmospheric version of Serge Gainsborough’s La Javanaise was used in the soundtrack of Oscar Winner "The Shape of Water" and her countless accolades include the coveted BBC International Artist Of The Year honor.
Thirty years after her formative busking days Peyroux is the proud curator of nine beguiling albums and an acclaimed performer with sold-out worldwide tours.
Peyroux’s keynote presentation and performance will take place in-person and will also be streamed online on May 20 at 12:30 pm Central Time.
Shirley Collins is an English folk singer, song collector, and perhaps the greatest living embodiment of the musical threads that connect the country with its history. As a significant presence during the Second English Folk Revival, she helped launch British folk-rock’s “golden age.”
Following a period of silence, Collins released her acclaimed record Lodestar in 2016 – a collection of English, American, and Cajun songs dating from the 16th Century to the 1950s. This was followed by her most recent full-length, Heart’s Ease, in 2020. In January 2022, a revised and updated edition of her signature memoir America Over the Water was released, chronicling her journey through America’s southern states with Alan Lomax documenting music and culture.
Collins is a Member of the Order of the British Empire, was awarded a Gold Badge by the English Folk Dance and Song Society, is a recipient of a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, and is currently patron of the South East Folk Arts Network and Folk South West. A documentary film about her life, "The Ballad of Shirley Collins," was released in October 2017.
NPR’s Bob Boilen called her “timeless,” continuing, “a legend — a humble one, but undoubtedly a transformative voice.” Meanwhile, past-FAI keynote speaker Billy Bragg said, “Shirley Collins is, without doubt, one of England’s greatest cultural treasures.”
Collin’s online interview will be streamed for conference delegates and broadcast online May 21 at 12:30 pm Central / 10:30 am Pacific.
Presented in partnership with "Horizons" UK, the interview will be conducted by Will Hodgkinson, chief rock & pop critic for The Times newspaper (UK). Will is an author, has written for Mojo magazine, The Guardian, The Independent, and Vogue, and presents the Sky Arts TV show Songbook (UK).
Showcase Performances and Panels at Folk Alliance Int'l
Just as at regional Folk Alliance Conferences such as FAR-West, artist showcase performances are of two basic types -- Official Showcases and Private Showcases, the latter also know as "Guerrilla Showcases" at FAR-West.
Panels will be a mix of in-person, live-streamed from Kansas City and from elsewhere.
Official Showcases will be presented and filmed in the hotel ballrooms and posted later for online attendees. Official Showcases feature jury-selected, tour-ready musicians representing diverse cultures, languages, and sound. These 30-minute sets are performed on full production stages.
Private Showcases turn hotel rooms into listening rooms. These performances are more intimate, often without any amplification, and offer an opportunity for the artists and turn each floor of the hotel into its own festival. Private Showcases have the option of streaming via the virtual conference platform, Pathable

This facility, at Santa Monica State Beach, is a public beach facility, with Courtyard, splash pad, view deck, restrooms, free & open to the public daily. The Beach House is on the location of a now-demolished 110-room mansion that was built for Marion Davies by William Randolph Hearst. Though the main mansion was demolished in the 1950s and other buildings were subsequently altered or torn down, the picturesque 7,000 square-foot North Guest House and main pool remain today.

"The Story Behind the Song" presented by folk legend John McCutcheon, is the final installment of his online series for the
Pasadena Folk Music Society, an organization with a long history of presenting live concerts on the Caltech campus in Pasadena CA.
McCutcheon's spoken introductions to songs built into his reputation as a skilled storyteller. In this concert, he'll talk about his inspiration for various songs, the historical research that he uses for some, the references behind particular lines, and other yarns. Ticket holders will have an opportunity to submit requests and questions in advance.

Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn” sold for $195 million, breaking the auction record for an American artist held by Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Warhol’s 40-inch-by-40-inch painting eclipsed the previous high price of $110.5 million for a Basquiat skull painting at Sotheby’s in 2017 and for Warhol’s auction high for a car crash painting that sold for $105.4 million in 2013.

He was a regular at Disneyland as a solo artist as well as with Billy Hill And The Hillbillies and the Big Thunder Mountain Boys. And at Knott’s Berry Farm in Ghost Town for years.
He played on the Back To The Future II soundtrack with Byron Berline and Dennis Fetchet, and led the house band at VivaCantina in Burbank for over a decade before trying his hand at being an impresario like B. Stane as part owner of VivaCantina. After which he came to his senses and now leaves all that to Mr. Stane and the CGB.
Cody’s album Big Dose Of Country was the basis for an episode of the hit TV show Seventh Heaven where his songs are featured as well as his singing on camera.
He played banjo on the soundtrack and on camera in the movie Relative Strangers with Danny DeVito and Kathy Bates.
He played a bluegrass gig with Chris Thile (at a Home Depot opening with John Moore, Chris was eight years old and already genius) and was featured several times with John Pisano on his Guitar Night show. He played guitar on Achy Breaky Heart with Billy Ray Cyrus (in the key of A, for the LA Sheriffs), Tutti Frutti with Pat Boone (key of Bb, at VivaCantina) and Gentle On My Mind and Silver Haired Daddy of Mine with Glen Campbell (w/ Norm Sancho and Bill Erickson at Glen’s golf tournament here in L.A.)

All are friends and have been playing local shows together and contributing to each other’s recording projects for a number of years. Shea says: “One of my favorite things about Los Angeles and the music scene here is, even after 20 or 30 years, you can continue to meet people you have things in common with musically, and they’ll have a whole network of friends and people they work with that you haven’t met. It’s just so vast - I don’t know anyplace else like it.”
Each artist will play a half-hour set, after which they’ll all play a set together. “I’ve asked everyone to bring something they haven’t done before, a new song or one they haven’t played much, or maybe just a different arrangement or collaboration,” Shea explains. “The theme is buried treasure.”

"Trouble: A Calamity Adventure," a musical stage event in its debut run, from Open-Door Play house, online.
Calamity is an all-female acoustic band based in San Diego. They describe their music (accurately) as “folk rock with a country pop.”
The group’s members include Catherine Barnes, Cathryn Beeks, Patric Petrie, Marcia Claire and Nisha Catron.
"Trouble: A Calamity Adventure" is a radio play (or a sonic movie, if you prefer), a thriller with a complete song score (TEN original songs), sound effects, comedy and danger.
The plot premise? The women are hired to play a concert gig at a club in Vegas, so they load up their truck and head for Sin City. While performing, their cell phones are all stolen and their truck is disabled, possibly by a romantic rival of one of the ladies. They accept an offer of a ride from a promoter. During a break at a stop in the desert, he attempts to assault one of the women but is slain. Fearing that they will be accused of murder, the band flees in his vehicle. Running out of resources, one of the musicians impulsively robs a convenience store. Now, the band finds itself heading for the Mexican border with police in hot pursuit. What will be the band’s ultimate fate?
"Trouble: A Calamity Adventure" will be broadcast in two parts, on June 1 and June 15, on "Open-Door Playhouse," a podcast that presents the works of playwrights to whom you should be introduced.

Brynn Albanese is a well-known and loved multi genre violinist on the Central Coast. She has been seen front and center as Soloist and Concertmaster on numerous Performing Arts Center stages with a wide variety of groups in the area as well as the ever-popular World Music Band, Café Musique. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Cambria’s largest Concert Series, Cambria Concerts Unplugged and she is also a Therapeutic Music Practitioner and End of Life Doula for local hospitals and care centers.
In March of 2020, seeing that her calendar was wiped clean, Brynn began the creation of a One-Woman-Show using backing tracks and recordings of her own band in the living room of her Cambria home. After many online performances and seeing that people were starving for LIVE music, in person, she took to the streets, cul-de-sacs, medians, yards, balconies and driveways and has performed over 100 Concerts since April 1st, 2020. A mix of European Gypsy, Latin jazz, Tangos, Classical with a twist, Opera covers and of course, a big splash of Celtic… she has created a lively, engaging and interactive show that she has now taken on the road!
The Furious Seasons are an acoustic trio with stories to tell. Living inside these songs are chronicles of life in 21st century Los Angeles, and stories of quietly heroic individuals, often told with a nod towards the passage of time. Acclaimed songwriter, singer and guitarist David Steinhart fashions songs that live on the hopeful side of melancholy. By the time this show happens, the Furious Seasons will have opened for Dave Mason at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills and the Canyon Club in Santa Clarita.
A reviewer wrote: "These are beautiful songs by David Steinhart that sneak up on you. Steinhart writes songs that put their arms around you and whisper naughty suggestions in your ear. Old Blind Dogs play the FIRST LIVE, IN-PERSON concert in two years at the Pasadena Folk Music Society, in Ramo Auditorium at Caltech.
Series producers say, "Hallelujah! Our first live, in-person concert since March of 2020 is approaching fast. Audiences have enjoyed Old Blind Dogs at six prior concerts at Caltech since 2002. This talented quartet is known for soaring fiddle playing, stirring pipes, and fine singing, punctuated by extraordinary percussion."
They add, "Enjoying a concert in the auditorium comes easier when you feel safe. To keep public events safer, Caltech now requires that all guests wear a high-quality mask (surgical, N95, KN95, KF94) indoors at all times. In addition, proof of full vaccination and booster, along with a government-issued ID, is required to enter Ramo Auditorium. Children under five -- who are not yet eligible for vaccination -- are not permitted at public events in the auditorium at this time. These health and safety measures are subject to change at Caltech’s discretion based on evolving health and safety guidance and conditions."
Old Blind Dogs' personnel has changed some over the years, though it's still the same as for their excellent 2019 Caltech show. The players are original-member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals, with Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals), Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals).

"Capitalism and the Death Drive" is a book translated from its original German and profiled in an excerpt on the Thom Hartmann radio show. Along the way of showing how greed has produced control that continuously routes us down the rabbit hole and is therefore strangling free-range thinking and creativity, the book discusses roots and warning signs.
One of those is long-dead English philosopher Jeremy Bentham. He had a notion of "The Panopticon," a complex of cells wherein every move by every inmate was observed and analyzed to devise the most effective means of changing behavior and achieving desired results without overtly coercive control. The book cites the example to observe how technology and corporacratic messaging yield a digital panopticon in which all of us are profitably observed and manipulated without our conscious consent.
The author could have delved into another prescient source, who, like Bentham, dates from well over 100 years ago. That is Thorston Veblen, who envisioned "The Voluptuary of the Future." Veblen forsaw a coming world in which profit would be derived from satisfying everyone's every desire without their need to venture anywhere -- other than their connection to a machine that would satisfy them. A satiated society with no wants has no unfulfilled longings, and therefore no discontent.
Conversely, a society satiated with messaging that you are only safe because you are one of "us," and we protect each other from the scary scourge of all of "them," works the same.
Either way, those in control are safe so long as they manage the message and maintain what makes the masses feel good.
It really does not require a stretch to combine the two ideas -- the Digital Panopticon and the Voluptuary of the Future. Indeed, finding it easy to connect them should scare the hell out of us, because that's pretty much where we are.
