It's time to savor LIVE MUSIC again, and we tell you about lots of options!
___
What's happening on the music scene...
Greetings from NAMM, the world's largest music instrument, gear, tech, and trade show! More than ever before, NAMM is very consumptive of time and resources, and we need to scramble to interviews, product demos, and more, to bring you our usual comprehensive NAMM coverage -- with reports on new gear, and everything from software to mics and mixers to things with strings.
So the story is NOT that some key exhibitors are absent! The story is the energy and innovation visible everywhere, after a global population of musicians and creatives had two-and-a-half years to turn imagination into tuneful reality. And we will be exploring that, with and for you.
So, just what is NAMM?
The National Association of Music Merchants is a not-for-profit association with a mission to strengthen the $17 billion music products industry. NAMM is comprised of approximately 10,400 members located in 104 countries and regions. NAMM events and members fund The NAMM Foundation's efforts to promote the pleasures and benefits of music and advance active participation in music-making across the human experience and individual lifespan. Read all about NAMM at www.namm.org
You're not at NAMM, you say? Well, this weekend is 'UGE, anyway! Really 'n truly.
We list a LOT for you here, including Saturday's Dylanfest, the Ukulele Fest, and rapidly approaching things like Live Oak, and the CMA Fest. BUT... There are shows this weekend at the Coffee Gallery Backstage (www.coffeegallery.com), McCabe's, (www.mccabes.com) and other fine venues and we just could not get to the info to include them.
We will bring you a comprehensive SERIES of reports from NAMM 2022. Yes we know that "will bring" is not present-tense.
Some NAMM news will arrive live from the enormous event, and most will be published over the coming days. That's because writing about half a dozen great things happening here takes the time needed to learn about a couple dozen more.
And that is true more than ever before here. This is a special, one-of-a-kind NAMM: it's a combined June replacement for the normal four-day Winter NAMM in Anaheim in January and the normal three-day Summer NAMM in Nashville in July. The entire world of music is in post-pandemic recovery and celebration, after the last NAMM Show, two-and-a-half years ago. But we are sharing only a jam-packed three days, total, to prove it.
So it's time to scoot from the press story-filing / live broadcast media area, and get back to the exhibitions!
Read on for our initial feature story from NAMM, and our first round-up of June.

Kenny Loggins receives prestigious "Music for Life Award" at 2022 NAMM
ANAHEIM, CA - June 3, 2022 - Multi-GRAMMY® winner, composer, performer, singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins was honored Friday with the "Music for Life Award" at the 2022 NAMM Show.
The National Association of Music Merchants “Music for Life” award is NAMM’s highest industry honor. The award was presented at the opening "Breakfast of Champions" session in celebration of Loggins’ lifelong commitment to inspiring music makers everywhere.
Past recipients -- one each year -- have included musicians Quincy Jones, Jason Mraz, Graham Nash, Stevie Wonder, Yoko Ono, Henry Mancini, Bob Weir, Nancy Wilson, and others, together with business leaders, and public officials.
NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond interviewed and presented the award to Loggins, who spoke of his career, dedication and work to music-making causes and his first guitar.
Loggins, speaking in an entertaining autobiographical narrative, said, “I went into Pedrini School of Music in Alhambra [California], and I bought my first classical music from there, and I bought my first electric guitar there, when I was a junior in high school. All the kids in my neighborhood, we all had the same dream – to be the next big thing.”
As usual, Lamonde's skills as an interviewer brought information this audience loves to know.
On his advice for the next generation of musicians, Loggins offered, “As far as music goes, music is in our DNA. When I’m working with young artists, we’re talking about the love of music, its role, and its importance in our lives.”
Loggins has a long history of using music to impact society in positive ways. He was the first major rock star to record music dedicated to children and families for his Return to Pooh Corner album, which still holds the title of best-selling children’s album of the last 20 years.
He has given numerous hours serving Little Kids Rock, Make a Wish, as well as many organizations that encourage the importance of music in society. In 2018, he helped re-open the original Notes for Notes (N4N) Studios at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara and United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara County, giving over six hundred kids each year access recording, learning, and playing instruments.
Beyond his initial acclaim as half of Loggins and Messina, his music has become the soundtrack of our lives with chart-topping hits like “This is It,” “I’m Alright,” “Footloose,” and the driving hit “Danger Zone,” which is back on the radio with the release of the film Top Gun: Maverick. Loggins has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and has won two Grammy® Awards.
His new memoir, Still Alright, hits stands on June 14 (Hachette Books), and he will follow with a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in July that will feature collaborator Jim Messina, marking 50 years since the first time they played the venue together.
The “Music for Life” award is NAMM’s highest honor and recognizes individuals or organizations that exemplify NAMM’s vision of music making as a precious element of daily living for everyone.
The award was a key element wholly in character with the opening day's breakfast session. LaMonde's opening address recognized all we lost during the pandemic, as well as the reservoir of creativity now being unleashed following pandemic quasi-quarantine. Thus, the opening day of The NAMM Show, the global music, pro audio and entertainment technology gathering, saw a kickoff with plenty of happy expectations.

Brynn Albanese plus The Furious Seasons play the Stagecoach Inn Museum Lawn, 51 S Ventu Park Rd, Newbury Park CA 91320
Steve Brogden tells us, "I'm delighted to tell you that the City of Thousand Oaks and TOArts have asked me once again to present a PopUp concert at the Stagecoach Inn Museum. Please join us on the lawn - bring your lawn chairs - for another evening of world class music."
Brynn Albanese is a well-known and loved multi genre violinist on the Central Coast. She has been seen front and center as Soloist and Concertmaster on numerous Performing Arts Center stages with a wide variety of groups in the area as well as the ever-popular World Music Band, Café Musique. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Cambria’s largest Concert Series, Cambria Concerts Unplugged and she is also a Therapeutic Music Practitioner and End of Life Doula for local hospitals and care centers.
In March of 2020, seeing that her calendar was wiped clean, Brynn began the creation of a One-Woman-Show using backing tracks and recordings of her own band in the living room of her Cambria home. After many online performances and seeing that people were starving for LIVE music, in person, she took to the streets, cul-de-sacs, medians, yards, balconies and driveways and has performed over 100 Concerts since April 1st, 2020. A mix of European Gypsy, Latin jazz, Tangos, Classical with a twist, Opera covers and of course, a big splash of Celtic… she has created a lively, engaging and interactive show that she has now taken on the road!
The Furious Seasons are an acoustic trio with stories to tell. Living inside these songs are chronicles of life in 21st century Los Angeles, and stories of quietly heroic individuals, often told with a nod towards the passage of time. Acclaimed songwriter, singer and guitarist David Steinhart fashions songs that live on the hopeful side of melancholy. By the time this show happens, the Furious Seasons will have opened for Dave Mason at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills and the Canyon Club in Santa Clarita.
A reviewer wrote: "These are beautiful songs by David Steinhart that sneak up on you. Steinhart writes songs that put their arms around you and whisper naughty suggestions in your ear. The album becomes panoramic upon multiple listenings. Jeff Steinhart on bass and Paul Nelson on guitars make a sound fuller than an acoustic three piece should be able to make. Gorgeous stuff."

IDYLLWILD SONGWRITING RETREAT & FESTIVAL
Produced by Denmark-based performing songwriter Brett Perkins.
"Brett’s focus on process over product & paying attention to your attention helped me work through my internal resistance to writing & collaboration. My own transformation over the week from feeling guarded/shut down/stuck to open/curious/joyful was mirrored in many of my fellow participants, & it was beautiful to witness. It was vulnerable, honest hard work, & I loved it! I am grateful to have made many connections with fellow songwriters at this retreat that will continue to sustain me in my future work." ~ Ynana Rose.
So, who is Ynana Rose? Ynana creates Americana music threaded with folk, country, blues, jazz and more. She sings of the joy and heartbreak of living in a rich, soulful voice that crosses genres with ease. An award-winning songwriter who draws inspiration from Norah Jones, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark and more, her music is rooted in the traditions of American music while reaching for new horizons. And you will hear her perform if you attend the festival that concludes the event on July 16.

Old Blind Dogs play the FIRST LIVE, IN-PERSON concert in two years at the Pasadena Folk Music Society, in Ramo Auditorium at Caltech.
Series producers say, "Hallelujah! Our first live, in-person concert since March of 2020 is approaching fast. Audiences have enjoyed Old Blind Dogs at six prior concerts at Caltech since 2002. This talented quartet is known for soaring fiddle playing, stirring pipes, and fine singing, punctuated by extraordinary percussion."
They add, "Enjoying a concert in the auditorium comes easier when you feel safe. To keep public events safer, Caltech now requires that all guests wear a high-quality mask (surgical, N95, KN95, KF94) indoors at all times. In addition, proof of full vaccination and booster, along with a government-issued ID, is required to enter Ramo Auditorium. Children under five -- who are not yet eligible for vaccination -- are not permitted at public events in the auditorium at this time. These health and safety measures are subject to change at Caltech’s discretion based on evolving health and safety guidance and conditions."
Old Blind Dogs' personnel has changed some over the years, though it's still the same as for their excellent 2019 Caltech show. The players are original-member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals, with Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals), Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals).
Some past Old Blind Dogs concerts at Caltech have sold out. Tickets for the June 18 concert are available online or by phone. Online, go to the link below. By phone, call the Caltech Ticket Office at 626-395-4652 between 10 am and 2 pm, Tuesdays through Fridays. The ticket office can also help regarding any questions about pandemic precautions.
