Ongoing, Fri’s & Sat’s in Dec, in Santa Monica.
7:30 & 9 pm “KURT WEILL AT THE CUTTLEFISH HOTEL” has its official opening night tonight at the newly contrived “The West End Theater” hanging over the ocean at the far end of the Santa Monica Monica Pier.
+
Performances run Thursdays & Fridays in December, beginning with a Dec 5 preview.
+
This is one of those improbably “only-in-L.A.” (okay, or only-in-Santa Monica) tales. Seems the Santa Monica Pier Corporation has joined forces with Tony Award winning actor / director Paul Sand to present live theater on the pier, appropriately named The West End Theater. That’s about as far west as you can get in L.A. This is how it happened.
+
Paul is eager to tell the story:
+
“I was taking a walk on the pier with a couple of friends one night recently and I suddenly thought... Wouldn’t this pier be a perfect place to have a theater and present a vivid production of KURT WEILL’S dark, theatrical waterfront songs all about revenge, murder and broken hearts. The next day I contacted Jim Harris, the Deputy Director of the pier and pitched him the idea. He smiled and said ‘O.K., we’ve been wanting to add live theater for the pier and I happen to have an available space at the far west end. It hangs out over the ocean and gets pretty wild up there some time, would that suit you?’”
+
“You bet it would!” said Sand. Jim wound up the conversation with, ”What do you think of calling it The West End Theater? “I can think of nothing better,” said Sand.
+
Paul then contacted a few beautiful, powerful and intense actors, who can also sing, which he had placed in his “remember that talent” part of his brain. Happily they all agreed to play. He called his friend Carol Sills, wife and widow of the legendary director Paul Sills who created Second City and Story Theater and with whom Sand had worked with his entire adult life. Carol Sills found Michael Roth, the musical director, who happens to be a Kurt Weill expert living right here in Santa Monica (a block away from Bertolt Brecht’s old house on 26th St.) “Turns out the guy is brilliant” says Sand. Roth accepted. So did Marie Lalanne, the truly extraordinary surrealist painter, who came aboard to design the costumes and create the murals on huge canvas panels in keeping with the carnival atmosphere of the pier. And, the entire company was formed in less than two weeks.
+
The list of Mr. Weill’s songs (so far) to be performed by the “dreamy” ensemble includes: “Mack the Knife,” and “Surabaya Johnny,” performed by the beautiful, tall and angry, (in a good way) SHAY ASTAR. Then there’s “Pirate Jenny” and “Barbara Song,” performed by the beautiful, incandescent MEGAN RIPPEY. Plus, “Luck Song” aka “On the Insufficiency of Human Behavior,” performed by SOL MASON, a tall lanky attractive kid on the wisely cynical side, who plays the host in this shady waterfront cabaret.
+
“A Final and Horrific Verse of Mack the Knife” will be performed by PAUL SAND (as Mack) who is obsessed with his own version of justice and insatiable desire for revenge.
+
“The Alabama Song” finale is the whole company singing goodnight to the audience from under a red spotlight.
+
The preview night is Dec 5, and the Opening Gala is Dec 6. There are two 45-minute shows each Friday and Saturday night, at 7:30 and 9 pm, throughout December.

♪ ONGOING, THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS… (3 shows)
Ongoing, Fri’s & Sat’s in Dec, in Santa Monica.

♪ NO MORE MUSIC AT BIG MAMA’S
When we listed last night’s all-acoustic blues show by WUMBLOOZO UNPLUGGED at Big Mama's Rib Shack in Pasadena, we didn’t know it would be the venue’s final presentation of live music. You can still go there for the BBQ, but those nights of fine blues entertainment are gone. The Guide was there, and surprised by the news. WUMBLOOZO commented, “We introduced music at the venue on a Tuesday night, so it’s sadly appropriate that we play it out here on a Tuesday night.”
The reason for the silent stage? Too expensive to pay next year’s demands from Big Music for live performance rights. Ironically, WUMBLOOZO played all originals. But previous examples in other venues indicate that the P.R.O.’s (Performance Rights Organizations) always strong arm the venues, anyway.

8 pm AIREEN & THE HOBOS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; www.coffeegallery.com; reservations: 626-798-6236.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them, “ENGLISH (UK), MULTI-CULTURAL. AMERICAN. AMERICANA, FILIPINO. AND, NOT TO FORGET THE UKULELE. A NIFTY NIGHT OF WONDERFUL MUSIC.”
+
AIREEN & THE HOBOS are a multinational trans-Atlantic ensemble. Aireene Espiritu is a singer-songwriter based in Oakland, CA and plays a mix of stompin', swayin', and timeless Americana on tenor ukulele. The core of her music is in the storytelling and down to earth vocals inspired by sounds from the South and growing up to her uncles' Filipino folk guitar fingerpicking. Almost three years ago, Aireene planned a tour connecting all her friends nationwide, moved all her belongings in storage, packed the car and took off. She has called the road her home ever since with no signs of slowing down. In the Spring of 2013, she expanded into new territory overseas for her first European tour. So it was by fate that she would be paired up with The Hobos, with similar wanderlust-spirited minds, a constant yearning for a ride of the senses, and a love of conveying their experiences through carefully crafted words, rolling rhythms and sweet melodies.
+
The Hobos is a London-based four piece alt-folk band with vocals, accordion, banjo, guitar, bass and percussion. The members are a mix of English and expats who grew up in different parts of the world, in the US, Kenya and Portugal, with a third culture that identifies their home as anywhere and everywhere. Their songwriting ties in life on the road, of trains, of love longing and has charmed fellow free-spirited hearts of every town they've marked their stamp on.
+
After their first 23-day European tour together, becoming fans of each others' music and singing along to each others’ songs while on the road, they decided to form a new project and joined forces as Aireene & The Hobos . They reunited this summer as one band, playing in the UK and Germany and now in the USA with their six week West Coast tour in November and December.
+
Praise for The Hobos: The Windmill venue in London, voted the third best music venue in London, has praised The Hobos, saying they "produce some of the sweetest sounds out of South London." UK Music Jobs compared them to Laura Marling and Beth Orton, saying "These Brixton-based musicians offer up twinkling guitars and a folksy storytelling charm that seems miles away from South London. Their first EP was released earlier this year, and features four fantastic pieces of acoustic musings and comforting melodies."
+
Praise for Aireene:
+
“Espiritu’s penchant for songs that sound like they came off a 78 rpm record, listeners will be swept away.” - Good Times Weekly, Santa Cruz CA
+
"I love what I heard, It's perfect for my kinda folk show-- bright, melodic, rootsy and with excellent vocals and hot pickin' too. What else can a lifelong Folk DJ ask for. " -Gene Shay, aka The Grandfather of Philadelphia Folk Music, WXPN Radio, The Folk Show
+
Manos Demetris, WCBN, Ann Arbor, MI, says, “For a small woman, Aireene's full voice packs a wallop. She was born in the Philippines and came to the States when she was 10. Her simple accompaniment is a Martin tenor ukelele, having a pure sound with few high frequency harmonics. This is folk music with strong Southern connections, and Aireene (pronounced like ‘Irene’) sings without country affectations. All songs are originals except the traditional ‘Oh Come, Angel Band.’ Aireene visited WCBN on 11/5/2011 for an interview and live performance. Her vocals can be playful one minute, and plaintive the next. When she finished the last notes of ‘Oh Come, Angel Band,’ every eye in the studio was moist, including mine. These are charming songs from a charming young artist."
+
Richard Rice, of the San Francisco Free Folk Festival & San Francisco Hootenanny Night, adds, "Aireene's songs are mostly originals. They just sound like songs Alan Lomax might have collected during one of his cross country recording jaunts. They carry both historic sweep and personal nuance. The melodies are full of bluesy longing, fingerpicked delicately on her tenor ukulele."

Mon, Dec 16, in SFV (Tarzana):
Time tba DEBBIE DAVIES brings her award-winning blues to the Maui Sugar Mill Saloon, 18339 Ventura Bl (just E of Reseda Bl), Tarzana 91356.
+
"She wields an electric guitar as if it were a wand." - Los Angeles Times.
+
"Davies playing is extraordinary - full of propulsion and energy and melodic invention." People Magazine.
+
"Davies exhibits guitar playing virtuosity with the likes of Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan." – Music Connection.
+
DEBBIE DAVIES’ rise to the upper echelon of blues music started at an early age as she absorbed the music heard constantly in her home. Her (professional) musician parents were either sitting at the piano or spinning discs on their turntable, filling the air with the sounds of big band jazz, harmony vocal groups, or the pop icons of the day. But the young Davies was particularly attracted to the bluesier sounds of her father's Ray Charles records, and by the age of 12 realized that her affinity for an instrument was not for the piano, but for the guitar.
+
Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960s, she found that being a female guitar player meant only one thing: acoustic guitar. Electric guitars were still toys meant only for boys. But when Debbie heard the sounds of the British blues-rock bands, particularly the electric guitar of Eric Clapton with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, she became completely captivated. Going against the grains of society's accepted roles of the time, Debbie pursued her dream with the passion of an artist and the soul of a rebel.
+
Davies cut her teeth playing in blues and rock 'n roll bands in the San Francisco Bay area before returning to Los Angeles in 1984, where she landed the lead guitar spot in Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs, an all-female band led by wife of British blues pioneer, John Mayall. In 1988 she was recruited by Albert Collins to join the Icebreakers, and for the next three years she was a featured guitarist performing behind one of the most innovative bluesmen of all time. "I stepped through a door into the real blues world when I joined Albert's band," Davies says. "It's one thing to listen to the records and pull off the licks, or sit in the audience watching these artists play. But actually going out and touring with one, turned the blues into something completely three-dimensional for me. I knew then what a special opportunity this was, but I know it even more now." During her tenure with Albert, Debbie was invited to perform on John Mayall's 1990 album, A Sense of Place, and in 1991 she recorded with Albert Collins and the Icebreakers on the Grammy nominated self-titled release for Point Blank/Virgin Records.
+
In the summer of 1991 Debbie became lead guitarist for Fingers Taylor and the Ladyfingers Revue, which served as the opening act for Jimmy Buffett's "Outpost" tour. In September 1993 she came out with her debut solo release, “Picture This,” on Blind Pig Records, which featured a cameo by Collins on "I Wonder Why." People like to ask Debbie if she learned her technique from Collins, to which she gently points out that she had to play well from the start to hold her own with Albert at every performance. However, the experience taught her lessons in being a better musician, both onstage and off. Says Davies, "It was the most powerful band I had ever played with, so I learned to dig even deeper into myself to pull out the music. Albert was a man of so much grace and kindness, so I can only hope that I was able to absorb some of his humanity too."
+
Since 1993, Debbie has produced nine solo recordings and two collaborative CD's, one with guitarists Tab Benoit and Kenny Neal, and another with guitarists Anson Funderburgh and Otis Grand. The roster of other artists who have joined Debbie in the studio on her recordings reads like a who's who of the blues: Albert Collins, Ike Turner, James Cotton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Coco Montoya, Duke Robillard, Tommy Shannon, Chris "Whipper" Layton, Sugar Ray Norcia, Mudcat Ward, Charlie Musselwhite, Bruce Katz, Per Hanson, Noel Neal, and Rod Carey. She has received eight nominations for Blues Music Awards, and in 1997 won the award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist. She was nominated yet again in this category for 2008.
