Yes, you’ll find tonight’s music events in this edition. But the theme today is the man whose banjo was emblazoned with the words,

“This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.”

That’s our NEWS FEATURE in this edition, about PETE SEEGER, who left us last night at the age of 94. We had been working on features on the NAMM Show, and the GRAMMYS, and other things. All those can wait.

This edition is for Pete, and it includes the live music around Southern California where those performing will doubtlessly be thinking of him.

Today in history...

Today marks 28 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded and broke apart 73 seconds after launch at 10:39 a.m. on January 28, 1986. When the shuttle's still-intact crew cabin hit the ocean at over 400 mph, the disaster took the lives of seven crew members, including Christa McAuliffe, who was to have been the first teacher in space.

♪  REMEMBERING PETE SEEGER

There are many obituaries out today. We will not subject you to a repackaging of what you may have read, or can readily find online. There are plenty of places you can read about Pete standing-up to the House Committee on Un-American Activities and telling them that they were conducting a fundamentally un-American activity with their witch hunt. You can easily find written and photographic and video records of Pete opposing the Vietnam War, and the invasion of Iraq, and standing-up for farm workers, and women’s rights, and oppressed workers, and comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.

Instead of another detailed review of all that, we offer you just a few points.

Today, CNN asked, “Is there a singer-songwriter today, now, like Pete Seeger?”

MSNBC’s Al Sharpton remembered Pete’s indispensable role with bringing the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement, and he played a piece of tape with Pete casually explained bringing the anthem: “I sang a song called ‘We Shall Overcome.’ And afterward, sitting in the back seat, Dr. King said, ‘we shall overcome.’ That really sticks with you, doesn’t it?”

A few years ago, Pete was asked to play a charity benefit in Carnegie Hall. Of course, he accepted immediately. Then the sponsors began to explain the arrangements for his flight and his hotel suite and the banquet for the performers, and Pete interrupted with, “I thought you said this is a benefit for charity?” In short order, he told them he would drive and needed no special airplane, and he had friends in New York City where he could stay for free, and Toshi would pack him a sack lunch, and doing things that way was simply being responsible and would allow the money raised to go to the charity.

Knowing things like that is why the movie poster for “Pete Seeger: The Power of Song” was on our wall since the film was released. Just two weeks ago, we took it down. Such is the enduring and ongoing influence of a man who, at 94, was still a formidable presence.

If you move in Folk-Americana music circles, you see Pete Seeger’s name everywhere.

The Ash Grove Foundation is active, years after the L.A. music venue named the Ash Grove burned-down. The foundation’s frequent emails include the following about founder of the venue and the foundation, Ed Pearl, who “got his first taste of producing folk music concerts as a student at UCLA in 1954, when he helped produce a Pete Seeger concert on campus. An avid guitar player, he studied with Bess Lomax Hawes -- the daughter of John and sister of Alan Lomax, celebrated folklorist, field recording pioneer, and music collector. Bess was the female member of the ALAMNAC SINGERS along with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Butch Hawes.”

The Urban Homestead in Pasadena, which includes a music venue, frequently sends mailings that ask, “Do you know the history of the ‘hootenanny?’” to which they answer, “Hootenanny is an Appalachian colloquialism that was used in early twentieth century. During the early 1960s at the height of the Folk Music Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger's newly formed folk-protest group, the Almanac Singers worked out of a loft in New York City hosting regular (Sunday afternoon) concerts called ‘hootenannies,’ a word Pete and Woody had picked up in their cross-country travels.”

The promo for last Friday’s concert by JOHN McCUTCHEON for the Pasadena Folk Music Society at Caltech contained this quote: “Pete Seeger said, ‘John McCutcheon is not only one of the best musicians in the USA, but also a great singer, songwriter, and song leader. And not just incidentally, he is committed to helping hard-working people everywhere to organize and push this world in a better direction.’”

JANN KLOSE, a renowned musician born in Germany, raised in Kenya, South Africa and in Hamburg, will perform three L.A.-area shows in February; his press promo notes, “Jann has shared the stage with artists from all eras of music history including Rusted Root, Vonda Shepard, The Voice’s Rebecca Loebe, Gary (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart) Lucas, Suzanne Vega, Annie Haslam and Renaissance, Brett Dennen, Pete Seeger, and the late Les Paul.”

ELIZA GILKYSON, Grammy-nominated folksinger-songwriter, included the note in her recent bio that she is “a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter” and celebrated her work with the Woody Guthrie review "Ribbon of Highway-Endless Skyway," alongside the Guthrie Family, Jimmy LaFave, Slaid Cleaves, and special guests Pete Seeger, Jackson Browne and Kris Kristofferson.

Pete was always at the center of things, and loved to perform with song circles of the known and unknown alike.

Tickets were already being sold for the first-ever “Woody Guthrie Prize” concert and honors on February 22 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space in New York, and the inaugural prize was to be bestowed on Pete Seeger. Of course, it is a fundraiser, this one for the Woody Guthrie Center. It’s “An intimate evening with Arlo Guthrie, Tony Trischka and other special guests,” and no doubt Pete would have performed.

The event will still go forward, and it will still honor American folk legend Pete Seeger, who will always be the first recipient of the Woody Guthrie Prize. And the prize will go to another deserving person each year, “honoring an artist, activist, or thinker who has made a significant contribution to causes that continue the legacy of Woody Guthrie.” But none will ever be more deserving than its first recipient.

So now, the space behind the hyphen has been filled for Pete Seeger (1919-2014), as it was for Woody Guthrie (1912-1967).

Lights down. Curtain. The echo of applause from all the venues he ever played. And encores left to all of us to perform, all of us who pick up the torch and aspire to continuing his legacy for truth, peace, and justice for all.

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE, " is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”

There IS life after NAMM, and some of the fine performers who came to town for trhe vent are still here (temporarily) to perform for you. That includes guitar virtuoso VICKI GENFAN, playing tonight at 8 pm.

We are working on several News Features for you about all the new things we learned at NAMM. But here is your no-waiting guide to venturing forth tonight. There is some exceptionally wonderful stuff out there that you can only catch tonight.

Today, January 27,  is the birthday of commentators ED SCHULTZ and KEITH OLBERMANN. It is also “Thomas Crapper Day,” named for the inventor of the flush toilet, and it narrowly misses being “National Kazoo Day,” which perhaps would have added to the humor.

Distinguished military scholar Victor Davis Hanson will present a fascinating talk about power, war, and leaders who helped change the course of history.

It’s a “Town and Gown Reception” and book signing to follow. Join President C. L. Max Nikias for an evening with leading military historian and Stanford University professor Victor Davis Hanson. Hanson’s most recent book, The Savior Generals, explores the nature of leadership in a set of brilliantly executed pocket biographies of five generals (Themistocles, Belisarius, William Tecumseh Sherman, Matthew Ridgway and David Petraeus), who single-handedly saved their nations from defeat in war. Hanson is also the author of the acclaimed books The Father of Us All, A War Like No Other, The Western Way of War, Carnage and Cultureand Ripples of Battle. He will discuss his stirring work about leaders who changed the course of war and history. The lecture will be followed by a conversation hosted by Scott Soames, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at USC.

The USC “Visions and Voices” team tells us, “Also this week, we will present a poetry slam with live music as well as a dynamic performance celebrating Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes featuring Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner. GRAMMYS tonight; things to do on the Final Day at NAMM -- Jan 26, 2014

It's a big day in the music world, and the biggest reasons are both in Southern California. It's the final day of the NAMM Show, where more than 90,000 people in the music industry have congregated to see and hear instruments, bands and gear, and tonight, the 56th Annual GRAMMY AWARDS are televised from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

GRAMMYS QUICKIE

Let's face it: the GRAMMY broadcast tonight on CBS really doesn't offer much for Folk-Americana fans. The West Coast airtime is three hours after it happened, and the few Grammys awarded in "our" music genres are not featured on TV, anyway.

The highlight -- maybe the only reason to watch at all -- is the "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT GRAMMY" being presented to the two surviving members of THE BEATLES, and it comes 50 years to the day after their 45 rpm single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit the US charts.  Both PAUL McCARTNEY and RINGO STARR remain vital and active parts of today's music, and both are known for the ability to make a witty remark.  That part should be interesting.

Vicki plays Luna and Dean guitars, and you can check-out her demo of the new USB adapter (recording directly to iPad) throughout the entire show. Performances are frequent. It happens in Hall B, at the Dean booth 5466 and Luna booth 5467.

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE, " is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”

Susie has organized this Winter Variety Show as a fundraiser with four prominent southern California acoustic acts: The Koles, Tracy Newman and the Reinforcements, Ernest Troost, and John Zipperer and Friends.

About Howard Larman:
Howard Larman, who with his wife Roz Larman, helped shape the Los Angeles folk music landscape as the longtime co-host of the Sunday night public radio show “FolkScene,” died at the age of 73 in April of 2007. “Their show has been a stopping-off point for just about every single name in folk music in the last 30 years,” Steven Starr, then interim general manager of KPFK, told The Los Angeles Times in 2002. Howard Larman had an encyclopedic knowledge of folk music and an elastic definition of the genre. “FolkScene” could feature little-exposed Celtic or roots-rock musicians and such prominent artists as Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Randy Newman and Pete Seeger. More than 3,000 musicians, often performing live, have appeared on “FolkScene,” according to the show’s records. When singer-songwriter Dave Alvin first went on the show with his old band, the Blasters, “it was a huge thing for me,” Alvin told The Times. “There were so many artists in the folk music underground that I learned about as a kid from listening to Howard on KPFK in the ’70s.” Folk singer-songwriter Richard Thompson told The Times, “Howard had an infectious enthusiasm for the music, and the show had a wonderful, relaxed style. It was like talking to friends.” Larman was a “warm, witty and wise interviewer…. just a great guy,” singer-songwriter Peter Case said in an e-mail. The interview that started it all was conducted in 1970 at the Montecito, Calif., home of Guy Carawan, the folk musician who helped introduce the song “We Shall Overcome” to civil rights protesters. Yesterday, we told you how to experience NAMM without a badge, AND we gave you the scoop on bunches of concerts at NAMM, through Saturday – read it, before you head for Anaheim. √ NOWELL SIEGEL at NAMM 2014: “From the Luthier's Chest”

NAMM 2014 is loaded with high tech gadgets and beautiful Instruments. For the first time, the Guide attended the Press Day, the day before the enormous event opened to attendees. Of course, it looked like complete madness as booths were being prepared, with everything from finishing touches to cranes rigging signs high above. A crew of 50 was rolling-out carpet as we walked through the aisles. The NAMM "Idea center" functioned this day as media central, stocked full of the newest, which might or might not mean the most innovative, in what was probably well-bought space from famous companies.

Here are the things that brought out the “wow” factor, or were especially interesting.

√ IK MULTI MEDIA has a camera-based control system using "finger rings" to control different things, from stage setups to pong game paddles. It’s done by moving the rings in 3-D space in front of the camera, without physically touching anything. The possibilities are wide open, to the point that the Guide’s editor remarked, “I wonder if they know what they actually have there?” IK also has a wide range of products aimed at interfacing music into the iPad / iPhone The trend is really leaning toward Mac, with PC-based apps running farther behind. I'm a PC guy, so I would like to see more stuff breaking through on this and other platforms like "Android."

√ MARTIN GUITAR is introducing another fine "Eric Clapton" signed Limited edition Guitar with a slightly longer scale. It was colored solid, but underneath lay Rosewood and spruce. It’s reminiscent of the ’40s and smartly decorated. Only a few hundred will be sold and should be collector’s items shortly.

√ TWO OLD HIPPIES (a WEBER side brand) is showcasing some fine mandolins and two of the four members of SHEL, a band of sisters from Colorado, played some fine music. [The Guide had info on them yesterday, and the play Hotel Café in Hollywood on Jan 28 at 7 pm.]

√ DPA (DANISH PRO AUDIO) had Pickup Microphones that are of note. They deliver sound that is especially real and natural.

√ GO PRO CAMERAS, as seen recently on “60 Minutes,” are there with innovations. These are tiny 2-by-3-inch cameras with removable / interchangeable SD memory cards, recording video in HD quality. In use already, they serve to capture wild points of view from wild angles. At NAMM, the press demo had stable camera brackets affixed to instruments that attach with no-mark, no damage temporary adhesives. For making music videos, the possibilities here are many.

√ MATSIKAS INSTRUMENTS, from the "old country" of Greece are making their first appearance at NAMM. We stopped and played some wonderfully crafted handmade Bouzoukis in the Matsikas Instruments booth. They have Lutes and Mandolins, Bouzoukis , smaller Tzouras (with 6 strings), and Baglamas which look like a miniature Bouzouki, with 6 strings. The attention to visual impact in their design is quite outstanding, and no two displayed are the same. All are highly ornate.

√ KALA, known for their Ukuleles, showed-off a neat uke-sized string Bass. Equipped with a LR Baggs’ pickup system, the U-Bass would be great for travel, at the size of a tenor Uke. That one stuck with me, and I wanted to really hear it, but booth construction noises were coming from everywhere on this day before the show opened. This little instrument is an interesting alternative to a big standup bass. [Editor’s note: we got to hear the U-Bass in the hands of STEVE BILLMAN, performing with DANIEL HO on Friday morning. The little bass, not plugged-in to anything, fully lives up to all you could hope for it.]

√ HASS CNC has a large milling machine doing demonstrations at NAMM. It was brought in directly from an instrument factory floor in Oxnard, where it earns its keep every day. Musical instrument companies have been using CNC machines for years. Hass can show you how integral they have become in today's market.

√ BOUCHER INSTRUMENTS is a company renowned for creating beautiful musical instruments, and they are newbies at NAMM this year, with an especially good space for hearing guitars – they’re in a concrete alcove, and it’s one of the quietest places at the show. Boucher also sells a great deal of fine-tone Adirondack Spruce. $300 will get you a mastergrade guitar top, if you want to build your own guitar, or hire someone to build it. It’s expensive, yes, but the wood is key to a great sounding instrument.

√ WOOD, in general, is not getting cheaper as demand by instrument makers throughout the world increases. Every maker of quality string instruments needs fine woods for their market. As the really fine lumber is used up, the day is approaching where costs must be passed to those who will pay for it.

√ “SEGUE (seg-way) TO SYNTHETIC” -- many companies are now making things with man-made, rather than traditional natural materials. ONARI guitar straps is touting their "Cowless" straps that are very close to leather (Really!). It’s an ongoing process, as you think about the materials used today for instrument strings, instead of traditional cat gut.

√ D'ADDARIO was a destination in my search for better Instrument. Their BRANDON CARMINE is developing a program that will help determine the right string for different tunings. We applaud his efforts. This is important, because too much tension will ruin an otherwise great-sounding instrument. When choosing strings for a guitar or whatever you play, consider string length, pitch, and different personal tastes. This will help you get the most out of our music.

√ PETERSON MUSICAL PRODUCTS makes some of the most accurate tuners for use on any and all Instruments. They are debuting a computer-based program for displaying correct pitch. I hope to be using this to create a better (In-tune) guitar. Pick up any guitar, and there are several notes that are close – but a guitar is really never in tune. Never.

√ GUITAR PICKUP SYSTEMS in general, from many different manufacturers, have come a long way. We expect the acoustic sound to really improve. TAYLOR is displaying a unique pickup system; and innovative models, including some new ones, are made by LR Baggs, Fishman, Barcus Berry, and DPA, all at the NAMM Show.

√ CADE CLARK GUITARS deserves special mention for the patented system on their guitars. Using three elements, it sounds quite good. Based in Australia, they are making some unique and quality guitars, using sustainable resources and locally-grown woods. And they have a limited run available now of guitars made from 3,000 year-old wood from a long-submerged tree that was found at the bottom of a Tasmanian lake.

Theses are just a few of the highlights here. NAMM is really huge. During the show, new ideas and innovations will be discovered by all who look. It’s a glimpse into the future – at least for the next year – of exiting advancements in the music industry. More as I come by it....

"JOHN FOGERTY: WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE, " is the wonderful temporary exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, on display through this month. It features artifacts from his personal collection, and it is named after his current album, hailed by fans and critics alike. John Fogerty’s music was considered rock when he first made it with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, but, current and retro, it’s classic roots-rock-Americana now. The album received a rare 5-star lead review in Rolling Stone. Included with regular museum admission, which also includes the temporary exhibition, “RINGO: PEACE & LOVE.”
