Chockfull Thursday: Ticket Alerts, Weekend Festivals, & Lots TONIGHT ~ March 27, 2014
.
There is a vast variety of exceptionally fine live music offerings tonight. Plus…
We have the HEADS-UP on this weekend’s FESTIVALS. And…
We have EIGHTEEN fresh TICKET ALERTS in this edition (plus two more reminders of previous alerts), and many of them will give you a jump on everyone else, using the presale passwords we provide.
One thing of special note… three evenings of Appalachian Bluegrass – by way of Canada – with the fiddling magic of the amazing APRIL VERCH BAND – commence tonight at the Ojai Concert Series at 7 pm (see listing), and continue Friday night at 8 pm at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, and Saturday at 8 pm at Caltech in a show presented by the Pasadena Folk Music Society. Pick one, because she is not to be missed.
Speaking of TICKET ALERTS, Tuesday’s edition brought you a bunch of ’em, too (and they are NOT repeated here), plus fresh NEWS, and THREE REVIEWS of albums that were released that day. It’s still available, at a separate click.
But let’s not miss anything happening TONIGHT. After we bring you, as always, a few notations on today’s history and some special birthdays. Let’s get started!
= + = + = + = + =
MARCH 27th in history…
Today is “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” apparently proclaimed officially somewhere, by some obscure governing body or other. And there is an appropriate show to commemorate it tonight at 8 pm at the Coffee Gallery Backstage; see the events listings.
Today’s birthdays include…
√ Musician / recording artist BUDDY MONDLOCK.
√ WILHELM C. ROENTGEN (1845), who, in 1895 at the age of 50, discovered x-rays, high-frequency short-wave rays produced by a stream of electrons. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1901. And today, units of exposure to x-rays are measured in Roentgens.
Now, YESTERDAY we missed some key birthdays. So belated happy birthday to:
√ KELLY ZIRBES aka “KELLY Z” of the roadhouse blues band KELLY’S LOT.
√ American poet ROBERT FROST (1874) who did not attend school until the age of 12, but went on to earn the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943. And he recited an original poem at the Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961, and was awarded the Congressional Medal by President Kennedy at the White House on March 26, 1962, on his 88th birthday.
√ SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR (1930) the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court.

+
It’s Carlene Carter's first album of new recordings this decade, set for release April 8, and produced by Don Was and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. As the daughter of June Carter Cash and country music great Carl Smith, the granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene says it has been her lifelong goal to make this record. The album revisits both classic Carter Family repertoire as well as original songs that relate to Carlene's connection with her musical and familial roots.

Willie Nelson guests on "Troublesome Waters" and Kris Kristofferson joins Carlene on "Black Jack David" while the unmistakable voice of Vince Gill is heard harmonizing on "Lonesome Valley 2003." "Blackie's Gunman" is a duet with Elizabeth Cook, whom Carlene calls her "adopted sister." Cook is heard on six of the album's twelve tracks. The participation of Lorrie Carter Bennett, daughter of Anita Carter, as well as Joe Breen, Carlene's husband, underscores the continuing Carter Family connective tissue that the album celebrates.

After a two-year hiatus, singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson is back with a new album, her fifth, and a studio album titled “Lights Out,” which gets released April 15 (but will be available at this event). She’s come a long way since her first platinum break-out single, “The Way I Am,” was released seven years ago. Her past records have always been written only by Michaelson herself, with one producer, recording in one location. For this new album, Michaelson decided it was time to take a risk and branch out of her comfort zone. She recorded “Lights Out” in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville, alongside six different producers and ten respectable co-writers, including the talented Katie Herzig, Mat Kearney, Trent Dabbs, A Great Big World, and Busbee (Katy Perry, Pink, Lady Antebellum.) Her most personal album to date, Michaelson didn’t hold back, drawing inspiration from the darkest moments of her life over the past couple of years. The result? An intense and thoughtful piece of work. Hosted by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman, the evening will feature both an interview with Michaelson and a performance. “Energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating fiddling and dazzling step dancing” is the short description. Seeing them, you’ll have much more to say.
+
April Verch has never sounded more comfortable in her skin than she does now, in the second decade of her career as an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer-songwriter. Her ninth album, Bright Like Gold, captures a woman who’s fleshed out her identity and is in full command of her gifts, a woman who’s grown from a prodigy into an enduring artist—one of music’s most unforgiving public transitions — with grace and grit to spare.
+
She’s of a generation far more likely to have spent its formative years taking in MTV than taking part in any sort of traditional music scene, and yet practically from birth she was immersed in folk music and dance from her native Ottawa Valley, a melting pot of Franco-Celtic flavors brought by the hard-working loggers who settled the area. The April Verch Band — rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, who has a Masters in jazz improv from the New England Conservatory—is an energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating outfit, not to mention one that’s not soon forgotten when they depart the stage.

It doesn’t hurt that the thrilling grand finale involves Verch fiddling and step dancing — and often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns — at once.

+
Yep. True stories about getting around Los Angeles, told by people who don’t drive. We do exist. Ask the staff of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. Tonight, you’ll hear tales of freaks, creeps and rock and roll stars riding the buses and trains of Los Angeles. These true stories are told by comedians, musicians, writers and other public transit miscreants, and they will make you laugh and / or freak you out. Samples? Scott Schultz, the host: “Proud to say that I haven’t driven since 2006.” Dean Haglund: “X-Files or the Los Angeles Metro system, which has weirder characters?” “Of course, this Lone Gunmen rides the bus!” ~ Buck Ball, Southern storyteller and comedian from Mississippi. “I Bet riding the #4 bus for the first time was a culture shock!” ~ Anonymous Cool Chick, too cool for the marquee, but not for the bus. Daiana Feuer: “I think she has a car now, but if you follow her be careful, she also has a band called Bloody Death Skull.” And Eddie Solis is the host of Los Angeles Nista and singer of the Hardcore LA Transit Band.

8 pm WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS plus THE SEGUARO SISTERS at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
There simply is no better way, or place, to celebrate “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” which is today – supposedly officially proclaimed (someplace).
+
Will Ryan (Gold Records) has the best unknown band of hugely accomplished individual musicians in all of L.A. Seriously. They are “The Official Singing Cowboy Band of Hollywood.”
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane most recently describes them as “Big Band stuff with outstanding humor. Tongue-in-cheek flavor of the West.” That’s part of it. They’re more like a 1930s movie studio band that played soundtracks for all the cantina scenes in the western movies. And with originals that have thoroughly modern relevance, like the comedic “Ding Dong Daddy of Abu Dabai,” about how warped we are over oil. Two of their members have logged over 60,000 performances at Disneyland. One has a GRAMMY. What else do you want to know? Except that THE SEGUARO SISTERS, who debuted here with them last month, had the house on its feet cheering. Wear your cowboy hat. Or not. But give your horse a scoop from the bag of good oats, and go.
+
To celebrate “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” WILL RYAN presents what he’s calling, “2014’s Big Salute to NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY” show.
+
WILL RYAN, winner of 2 Gold Records, BMI’s Pioneer Award for songwriting, featured in multiple Oscar-nominated films, and self-styled “King of the Radio Cowboys,” is joined by “CHAPARRAL KATIE” CAVERA, the band’s “Mona Lisa of Melody, the Garbo of the Banjo, the Helen of Troy of Western Skiffle,” plus WESTY WESTENHOFER, their “Maharajah of Musical Mirth, the Yo-Yo Ma of the Tuba,” and JOHN “PRESTO” REYNOLDS, “Prince of the Plectrum, The Grand Kahuna of the Git-Tar.” (If Will is that creative with simple promotion, you can imagine the superior quality of his songwriting.)
+
Plus, THE SAGUARO SISTERS, Southern California’s newest musical sensation, the ensemble of SHONA, KATRIONA and KARONA. Maybe you’ve heard their singing (every week!) on Pacifica Radio, or caught their acting on the syndicated series “Adventures in Odyssey.” Or maybe you’ve read about them in Club House Magazine. See ‘em an’ hear ‘em in person, and delight to soaring Western Skiffle harmonies with” the most runcible repertoire in the West!” (A Will Ryan quote, and we don’t know what “runcible” means, either.) Johnny Crawford (son of “The Rifleman”) calls the Saguaro Sisters “The greatest new vocal sound West of the Great Divide!”
+
Plus, joining the band for ONE NIGHT ONLY, from the Dick Van Dyke Show, it’s BARBARA PERRY, who played “Pickles” on the classic series (and many other characters on other shows, including Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, Andy Griffith Show, Perry Mason, My Three Sons, Bewitched, How I met Your Mother, and more.)

Thu, Mar 27, in Hollywood:
8 pm LINDA PERHACS plus opening act JIM CAMACHOplay the “Hollywood Forever Presents” concert series in the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
+
Writing of LINDA PERHACS, the promo notes in a roundabout way, “Sometimes it seems as if the world is full of Great Lost Records. Every few weeks, a diligent and adventurous label will uncover some neglected album from the cusp of the ’60s and ’70s and present it as a true classic. Many of these records are pretty good, and act as testament to the creativity and fecundity of the music scene in America back then. Few of them, however, have a really enduring afterlife: following the miracle of rediscovery, most recede into a new kind of limbo, in the shape of a lavishly annotated CD package rather than as dusty, overpriced vinyl. LINDA PERHACS’ ‘Parallelograms’ is one of those exceptions that proves the rule; the American equivalent to Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day.’
+
“An uncanny mix of Aquarian folk and ethereal, avant-garde treatments, ‘Parallelograms’ was created in the heart of hippy country, L.A.’s Topanga Canyon, by a dental hygienist who was inspired by nature and by the cultural revolution going on around her. “
‘I’m not a drug user,’ she says now, still living on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. ‘I never was in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but I loved those people because they were dealing with energies, and our conversation level would be very deep. I’m deeply intuitive, I see and hear things the average person might not experience.’
+
“’Parallelograms’ was produced by one of Perhacs’ dental clients, Leonard Rosenmann, a film composer who had written the scores for ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ and ‘Barry Lyndon.’ Over nine months, with a host of experienced players on call – ‘I felt like a street urchin being schooled by Picasso,’ she says – Rosenmann fleshed out Perhacs’ astonishing and intuitive musical vision.
+
“When ‘Parallelograms’ was finished, it sounded like a masterpiece, but the Kapp label pressed it so badly that, Perhacs says, ‘I could only bear to listen to it once. I then threw my copy of my own record away.’ Promotion was negligible, sales non-existent. Obscurity beckoned.
+
“In the internet age, though, obscurity can be discreetly transformed into a kind of niche immortality. As the 21st Century began, and Perhacs recovered from a grim bout of pneumonia, she learned that ‘Parallelograms’ had become a cult album. A CD reissue on The Wild Places imprint followed in 2003, but Perhacs’ reputation only continued to grow. Devendra Banhart was particularly evangelical, and tempted Perhacs back into a studio in 2007 to provide backing vocals on his reconstruction of the vintage Topanga vibe, ‘Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon.’ Disparate and unlikely fans revealed themselves: Swedish death metal group Opeth covered ‘Parallelograms;’ Daft Punk placed ‘If You Were My Man’ in their Electroma movie.
+
“’I first bought Parallelograms on vinyl when I was in New York on tour,’ remembers Ramona Gonzalez of the L.A. group Nite Jewel. ‘I carried it under my arm to a crowded party, shut the door to the room that had a turntable, turned it on, and laid on the ground. I probably listened to it a dozen times while tears filled my eyes.’
+
“And slowly, Perhacs began making music again. In 2010, she performed live for the very first time, at a tribute show (organized by the internet radio station, Dublab) that connected her to a new generation of L.A. musicians supernaturally attuned to her vision. ‘I never personally wanted to be the center of attention, with all that pressure on you,’ she says. ‘I didn’t need it for any personal reason. But I got hooked when I did the show for Dublab. On the Food Channel nowadays, they mix spices from all parts of the world. There are no limits, and that’s how I felt when I met all these young artists. I wanted more.’
+
“Perhacs fell into auspicious and hip young company, tentatively negotiating a return to musical activity with the help of Gonzalez and Julia Holter. Inspiration came, too, from listening to ‘Francisco,’ a Milton Nascimento song that Devendra Banhart had passed on to her, and from watching ‘Inside Björk,’ a documentary which showed the Icelandic singer escaping from the pressures of performance by sailing up close to a majestic iceberg.
+
“Fittingly, though, it was one of Perhacs’ own spiritual experiences in nature that proved the catalyst for resolving all her ideas into a new album. On May 20, 2012, she watched a solar eclipse from her bedroom window. ‘I was just overwhelmed by the beauty,’ she recalls. ‘A whole new song concept poured into me, faster than I could write it down. I settled down afterwards, and I had all these scattered pages in front of me. For weeks afterwards I kept trying to find an hour in my busy schedule to put the pieces together, but nothing felt right. One day I was frustrated, because I had to get back to responsibilities and the workaday world, and I went to that same window and I said, ‘God, this is never going to happen unless I find someone to help me. I need a full arranger, I need good recording capability close to home, these concepts come into my head faster than I can catch them and arrange them.’
+
“’Two days later this email came through from Fernando Perdomo. I get a lot of messages but something said, ‘Answer that email right away.’
+
“Perdomo, it transpired, was a skilled musician and producer who’d just moved from Florida into Perhacs’ LA neighborhood. Along with another dedicated and gifted Perhacs fan, Chris Price, the trio began recording the eclipse song, ‘River Of God,’ and what became the new album’s title track, ‘The Soul of All Natural Things.’ It’s a remarkable follow-up album, one that sustains and extends the aesthetic mission of its 43-year-old predecessor. Julia Holter and Ramona Gonzalez contribute, too, on a set of 12 new songs which Mojo has already called ‘a spectrally hypnotic work of prismatic beauty.’
+
“’Linda is a fierce and disciplined, yet open-minded, visionary,’ says Holter. ‘She’s probably a musical virtuoso, with an incredible vocal range and a discerning ear, and she likes to try out different sets of harmonies and wild timbres. But she always has a story to tell and takes the message as seriously as the music.’ As a consequence, ‘The Soul of All Natural Things,’ for all its apparent serenity, is also a subtly polemical album, full of exhortations to take a step out of our frantic everyday lives. ‘We get too far out of balance and we must find a way to get back to our polestar,’ Perhacs says. ‘I felt that people needed to be reminded of that. My music isn’t just recreational, it’s not just entertainment. I have a deeper purpose. My soul is giving itself to the people; I want them to be helped, I want them to be lifted. If you follow a fad, it’s very temporary. If you center yourself in something that is eons old, you line yourself up with the highest vibrations in the universe: more light within, more inspiration within, more love within.’
+
“Lofty aspirations, perhaps, but they typify this new age of Linda Perhacs’ music. ‘Linda,’ says Sufjan Stevens, who is releasing ‘The Soul of All Natural Things’ on his Asthmatic Kitty label, ‘has a prophetic voice that speaks beauty and truth with the kind of confidence and hope that has been lost for decades. There is nothing more real in music today.’”

After 20 years amassing an impressive, mostly instrumental solo discography that often dug deep into exploring his jazz roots, Andy Summers hopped off The Police Reunion Tour in 2008– a 15 month worldwide jaunt that became the third highest grossing tour of all time –with a burning desire to keep rocking. Eager to start a new project, the guitarist, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer since 2003, began recording material for a rock album in his Venice, California studio. He ultimately felt it lacked the right magic. Fast forward a few years and a fortuitous encounter at Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rob Giles’ performance at The Troubadour with his band The Rescues, and Summers realized he had found the ideal musical partner. Dubbing themselves Circa Zero, the duo’s 429 Records debut Circus Hero is a whirlwind of intense pop/rock energy, a set of 13 freewheeling, infectious tracks combining Giles’ soaring vocals and harmonies with Summers’ powerful melodies and inventive riffs. Please join us, just one day after the release of Circus Hero, for a discussion, hosted by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman, featuring Andy Summers and Rob Giles. After the interview, the group will perform a selection of songs.

From his work with artists ranging from Leann Rimes to Lee Greenwood, Paul Young to Billy Swan, Johnny Tillotson to Mac Davis and Vassar Clements to Odetta, Harry Orlove has covered a lot of territory in his career. Whether it was live appearances on “The Tonight Show” or studio work for movies like “Deep Impact” and “The Southpark Movie,” or TV productions “Murder She Wrote” and “Knight Rider,” he’s always been ready to play whatever was required. However, though it all, his great passion for Jazz never left him and now he’s pursuing it wholeheartedly. He’s recently released his first all Jazz CD featuring original instrumentals and several well chosen vocal tunes that lean towards the soulful ballad side. Come hear him as he presents this exciting and intimate music at the Coffee Gallery Backstage with his full Quartet (Piano, Bass and Drums) featuring some of the finest musicians on the Los Angeles Jazz scene. Oh, and he's funny as hell, too.. By 1973, Harry’s interest in the 5-string banjo and bluegrass music had become an obsession, and he worked in several ground breaking “new acoustic music” bands including, “Bottle Hill” and “The Monroe Doctrine”. This led him to a gig with Vassar Clements playing guitar on two of Vassar’s records and touring for a short time. During this period, Harry also played guitar on records by Tony Trischka and Stacy Phillips among others. In his years on the West Coast, Harry has recorded with a wide range of artists like Lawrence Juber, Billy Swan, Lee Greenwood, Albert Lee, Paul Young, Robin Zander(Cheap Trick), FelixCavalieri(The Rascals), and has also done a great deal of commercial studio work including spots for Coca-Cola and Gateway Computers. His film credits include “Deep Impact,” “Delta Force,” “Wagon’s East,” “Man Of The Year” and “The Southpark Movie,” there have also been TV sessions for “Knight Rider,” “The Promised Land,” “Murder She Wrote.” His recent live shows include performances with Leann Rimes, Michelle Shocked, Fred Willard, Odetta, Lucinda Williams, Del McCoury, Johnny Tillotson, Mac Davis, Johnny Rivers, David Grisman, Ray Campi, Peter Rowan, James Intveld, Brian Setzer, Big Jay McNeely, Jerry Douglas and on and on and on... Harry has released two CD’s. 2004’s “Back From The Dead,” and his newly released Jazz CD “So It’s Come To This,” both of which are available at CD Baby and on iTunes.

March 25 in history…
Legendary singer DION reports, “Susan and I will celebrate our 51st Wedding Anniversary March 25th. In the UK, when you're married 51 years, you receive a personal letter from the Queen of England. Here in the United States of America, I hear they're initiating a new custom – You get a letter from the IRS.” The Guide cannot verify the veracity of that claim.

Tuesday Birthdays…
On this day in 1871, GUTZON BORGLUM was born to Danish parents in Idaho. He was the force behind the MT. RUSHMORE MEMORIAL in South Dakota, though he died in 1941 before its completion. And technically, it was never completed. Now, what of the man himself? Certainly a brilliant and gifted sculptor and artist. But was he a racist? It seems so, at least after seeking and getting the commission to carve the Confederate Memorial into Stone Mountain, Georgia. So we have the choice of viewing the monumental works in terms of themselves as singularly towering works of art, or tainting our sensibilities by exploring the inner nature of an artist from another time – a challenge presented by every dead artist.

√ GUITARIST / VOCALIST JIM OBLON’s NEW ALBUM, “SUNSET,” RELEASED TODAY
New album from PAUL SIMON Band member features legends JIM KELTNER and LARRY GOLDINGS
by Betsy Buntin
(Nashville, TN) Jim Oblon is one of those rare talents — a jaw-dropping guitarist, soulful singer and compelling writer. On “Sunset,” released today, March 25, Oblon’s virtuosic Telecaster-driven blues chops and vocals shine on a set of originals, vintage rock & roll, and country blues, all delivered in a neoclassic organ trio setting comprised of legendary session drummer Jim Keltner and renowned GRAMMY-winning organist / pianist Larry Goldings.
Oblon has gained national attention as guitarist, drummer, and vocalist in Paul Simon’s band as well as for his contributions on bass, drums and guitar to Simon’s latest album “So Beautiful or So What.”
Always a believer in the bigger musical picture, Oblon aims to expound upon the legacy of his forbearers without ever becoming an impersonator himself. “Today there’s a ‘blues scene’ with Brylcreem and bowling shirts, all the gear, but it doesn’t have the essence of music,” Oblon asserts. He continues, “I wanted to honor the people who came before me. Maybe I can add a few of my own things, but I want to not lose what was.”
“Sunset” is a showcase for all three musicians – Oblon, Keltner, and Goldings. The album was recorded with the trio playing together in one room. The energy and intensity created by this performance-style recording approach yields tracks that literally seem to pop off the disc. A blues-funk reworking of Little Richard’s “Lucille” gives each of the players a chance to stretch out and strut their inventiveness, musical depth and mastery, as well as their ability to put a fresh spin on an old classic.
Oblon’s soul shines on his two originals, the languid “Desert Sun” and the almost time-suspending instrumental title track, “Sunset.” And his plaintive telecaster, backed by Keltner’s bombastic rhythm bed, lends a particularly vibey feel to Lead Belly’s “When I Was a Cowboy 1911.”
Goldings, featured on piano on “Desert Sun” and “Railroad Bum,” uses the Fats Domino classic “Blueberry Hill” to illustrate why he is considered one of the best Hammond B3 players alive; he delivers a solo that makes you think he’s been waiting his whole life to play this tune.
Rock / session legend Jim Keltner’s performances stand out as almost a “Jim Keltner how-to”: propulsive, yet laid-back, rocking yet swinging, and rhythmically-percussive enough to make you swear there is more than one of him playing.
In 2011, Oblon released a Jim Morrison-esque recording of the traditional song “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” which was featured in last season’s finale of HBO’s hugely popular vampire drama “True Blood.” Oblon now lives in Nashville, where he’s a fast-rising guitarist on the session scene. His Tuesday night residency at fooBAR in East Nashville is becoming the buzz event of the week among musicians and those in the know. Whether you’re there to hear him or not, this is a welcome album.
“SUNSET” is out today on Compass Records. More at www.compassrecords.com

√ New CD out today, March 25: “COUNTRY BOY: A BLUEGRASS TRIBUTE TO JOHN DENVER” with All-Star Lineup / Grammy Winners / Nominees
(This story originally appeared in the Guide on Feb 12, 2014.)
Grammy-nominated bluegrass band SPECIAL CONSENSUS announced today in Nashville that they are preparing to release their guest-laden project featuring DALE ANN BRADLEY, JOHN COWAN, JIM LAUDERDALE, CLAIRE LYNCH, PETER ROWAN, RHONDA VINCENT, MICHAEL CLEVELAND, ALISON BROWN, and more.
Special Consensus is joining forces with contemporary bluegrass music's best on the new album, slated for release on March 25.
“There is a natural affinity between bluegrass musicians and John Denver's repertoire but this is the first purely bluegrass tribute to the iconic singer-songwriter who died in 1997,” says a spokesperson for the band.
“Country Boy” features Special Consensus at the musical center of each track, with a guest cast of Grammy-winning and International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)-winning vocalists and instrumentalists joining-in. Produced by award-winning musician and Compass Records co-founder ALISON BROWN, the album’s 10 tracks draw from across Denver’s hits and lesser-known songs.
In talking about the genesis for the idea, band founder GREG CAHILL commented, “I’ve met so many people who were affected by John’s music and so many musicians who mention him as an inspiration. It felt like a bluegrass interpretation of his songs would be something really special and might also serve as a way to connect more people to bluegrass music.”
Compass Records tells us, “There is no question that the album achieves some special musical moments – both vocal and instrumental.”
SPECIAL CONSENSUS’ mandolinist RICK FARIS and reigning International Bluegrass Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year CLAIRE LYNCH share lead vocal duties on the album’s first track, ‘Wild Montana Skies,’ their vocal lines perfectly complemented by ROB ICKES’ Dobro. On ‘Country Roads,’ Special Consensus guitarist DUSTIN BENSON and the legendary JOHN COWAN swap verses against a tapestry of banjo and fiddle provided by GREG CAHILL and DEL McCOURY BAND fiddler JASON CARTER. And, in a surprise twist, SPECIAL CONSENSUS delivers an all-instrumental version of ‘Thank God I'm a Country Boy,’ with the twin fiddles of label mate MICHAEL CLEVELAND and session ace BUDDY SPICHER and the twin banjos of GREG CAHILL and ALISON BROWN.
The entire cast of featured guests includes Dale Ann Bradley, Jason Carter, Mike Cleveland, John Cowan, Rob Ickes, Jim Lauderdale, Claire Lynch, Peter Rowan, Buddy Spicher and Rhonda Vincent.
SPECIAL CONSENSUS, the motive power behind the project, was founded in 1975 by banjoist Greg Cahill as a showcase for his urban traditionalist take on bluegrass, which encompasses elements of Chicago blues, swing, newgrass, and country music. Over the ensuing 37 years, the group has seen a myriad of personnel changes and has been the breeding ground for some of the best young stars in bluegrass today, and Josh Williams, Chris Jones and Robbie Fulks are just a few names in a long list of former members who have gone on to build solo careers. Special Consensus maintains a busy year round touring schedule, reaching an eclectic demographic through appearances at festivals, listening rooms, “bluegrass in the schools” programs and symphony appearances. Their 2012 release, “Scratch Gravel Road,” achieved a Grammy-nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.
You can catch the quick sneak auditory peak of “Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver”” on SiriusXM’s “Bluegrass Junction” with Kyle Cantrell today. But the big radio event is the “Track by Track” on SiriusXM’s “Bluegrass Junction” airing March 19 at 8 am Pacific.

√ Today is the birthday of musician / recording artist MAIA SHARP.
March 24th in History…
√ On this day 25 years ago, the Exxon “Valdez” supertanker ran aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, crushing a portion of the ship’s hull and spilling 11 million gallons of oil that killed sea life and aquatic birds for 11,000 square miles. 19 years later, in 2008, the US Supreme Court reduced Exxon’s liability by $5 billion, making the total damages paid by the company just $550 million. Oil from the Valdez continues to be found along the Alaska coast, in some areas in a thick layer of stining goo just 10 inches below the coastal mud. Alaskan towns along the Sound immediately had their fishingdependent economies destroyed, and rates of unemployment, spousal abuse, divorce, and alcoholism all soared and have yet to return to normal in the region. The Exxon Valdez was America’s worst oil disaster, and became a metaphor for environmental disasters that cause economic collapse – and perpetrators getting away with it.

8 pm Texas folk star TISH HINOJOSA, plus ANNY CELSI, play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
Tonight, two acclaimed American artists present an acoustic nu folk / pop / roots evening celebrating one of America’s most cherished art forms – songwriting, as Tish Hinojosa (Austin, TX) is joined by her special guest Anny Celsi (Los Angeles, CA).
+
TISH HINOJOSA, San Antonio-born and recently returned to Austin, has long been one of Texas folk music’s national treasures, playing all over the globe. She has drawn numerous critical accolades for her borderless approach to music, blending Mexican folk and country music with a modern singer-songwriter sensibility and touches of pop. She has headlined cowboy gatherings and top western music festivals, folk festivals, and contemporary music festivals on two continents.
+
With accolades that include playing at the White House at the invitation of President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Linda Ronstadt recording her own version of Tish’s song “Donde Voy,” and teaming-up with music stars that include Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Nanci Griffith, Pete Seeger, Flaco Jimenez, and Los Lobos, Hinojosa’s sound has an undeniable and far-reaching appeal.
+
Tish’s latest album of originals, “After the Fair,” draws its inspiration from the sights and sounds of the St. Pauli district of Hamburg, Germany, where she lived for the past nine years before moving home to Austin. The album was produced by Berlin musician and producer Moe Jaksch and has just been released in Europe on Colosseum Records. It will be available at the show.
+
The Guide’s editor, writing in the Guide, FolkWorks, and other publications, has long celebrated Tish Hinojosa’s clear soprano voice and the melodic structure and lyrical content and messages of her songs. He’s not along. The music press loves her.
+
The Washington Post acclaims Tish as “A talented songwriter with an understated but utterly unaffected delivery…vivid…touching… pointed…playful…engaging…A rare gift for melody that’s perfect for Hinojosa’s lovely, relaxed soprano.”
+
SPIN Magazine says, “Her songs are richly detailed slices of life… Hinojosa’s is a strong, poetic, sensual, and conscious voice.”
+
More on Tish Hinojosa at her official website, www.mundotish.com
+
Plus, ANNY CELSI…
Opening the show is Los Angeles singer-songwriter ANNY CELSI. Her style has been described as “beatnik cool,” “pop-noir,” and “slightlydelic pop jangle,” and has evoked comparisons to artists Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega and Jackie DeShannon. Her 2009 album, “Tangle-Free World,” produced by Nelson Bragg of the Brian Wilson Band, showed influences ranging from Bacharach to The Bangles and back.
+
Anny performed for years with the late DUANE JARVIS, and the two complimented each other beautifully. But make no mistake: Anny on her own is, and always has been a formidable artist.
+
Anny’s latest self-produced album, “January,” once again has drawn accolades. Maverick Magazine (UK), says of Anny’s latest record, “….it’s just the perfect music; all summery, sunshine pop with gorgeous harmonies abounding…this rootsy, pop-flavoured collection of self-penned songs is a genuine winner.”
+
Others celebrate her new record, declaring that it “combines Brill Building hooks with a songwriter’s eye for detail.” In her live shows, Anny always brings “wit, soul and energy to the singer-songwriter format, proving that ‘girl-with-guitar’ has no limits.”
+
Anny’s CDs are available at her shows and on her website, and are distributed in Europe through Taxim Records and Blue Rose Records. Much more at: www.annycelsi.com

Considered by many to be the most innovative and uplifting groups on the scene today, JON BATISTE and his band are revered for their unique approach blending many genres to create a musical mashup that they call "social music," creating a musical and entertaining live show. Batiste is celebrated for “his soulful voice, virtuosic piano chops and dapper sense of style.”

Although he comes from a renowned lineage of New Orleans musicians in his family, over the last decade he has forged his own artistic path by fusing himself within the fabric of New York City culture. At age 26, Batiste is already the Artistic Director At Large of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and he has received a Master’s Degree in Piano from the Juilliard School.
+
Batiste brings to mind a young Ray Charles on his latest release, “Social Music,” as he reinterprets America's richest musical traditions through a contemporary lens. Although heavily rooted in jazz, he will tell you that “Social Music” is not about any particular musical tradition more than it is about the intent of the music itself. “The purpose of this music is to bring people together from all walks of life by creating a montage of many different music traditions and playing it with the spirit of inclusiveness,” says Batiste.

Mon, Mar 24, in Altadena:

+
+
Hosted by Scott Goldman, Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, who conducts the performance-interview, Batiste will discuss his soaring career and play a selection of songs.
