Why we’re here, on Blogger.com: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, so we had to endure a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments, usually only one day at a time. It was too much, so we have begun posting the calendar and news here. We’ll see how it works, and if everyone adjusts and gives positive feedback, we’ll move here, and soon.

FUTURE EVENTS are posted into 2009, as are “BEST OUT-OF-TOWN (Beyond the L.A.-Area)” events. We update often, and we add a BUNCH of concerts, club gigs, workshops, and recurring events as we learn about them and as dates arrive.

THE MIGHTY ECHOES began singing at a store front theatre in L.A.’s Silverlake District in 1986. Individually, they are CHARLIE DAVIS, a native New Yorker whose low bass is deep as an ocean trench (he was the voice of God on TV’s Power Rangers); second tenor JOHN LATHAN, the newest Echo, who has performed on Broadway and at the Apollo in Harlem; first tenor JON RUBIN, also the lead singer of the teen idol band THE RUBINOOS, has thrilled audiences worldwide with his soaring tenor; mellifluous baritone HARVEY SHIELD started as a drummer in swinging ‘60s London, and he is also an accomplished songwriter as exemplified by his composition. “The Way I Feel Tonight,” an International hit for THE BAY CITY ROLLERS. $18.

SONGS OF SHILOH is the concept album that lends its name to its creators, NICOLE GORDON & MARTY AXELROD, when they perform their thematic show. The two, plus Marty’s daughter ZOE, performed much of the album’s contents live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” during two live performance-interviews. It’s a new venue, said to be beautiful, serving food, beer & wine, 25 mins E of Pasadena off the 210 Fwy. The venue is part of the newly-renovated Claremont Packing House. Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Billing themselves as “America’s only Italian and Irish Band” and hailing from the historic Gold Rush Country of Central California’s Sierra foothills, the Black Irish Band has been together seventeen years. The band has a large compliment of traditional maritime and railroad music, as well as ethnic tunes. They excel at Irish, Italian, and American folk music with an assortment of fine originals and traditional western songs. To date, the band has produced 16 albums and recorded 82 originals.

The Black Irish Band played the 2005 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall and in the Kennedy Center. They’ve been featured on CBS "This Morning," and headlined the 2000 International Music Festival in Singapore. JIM KWESKIN, a legend in the great folk years, was the founder and leader of THE JIM KWESKIN JUG BAND which gained a reputation of being on "the fun side of folk music." MARK FOSSON‘s music has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” HOWLIN’ RAIN is a quintet from Northern California whose second album, “Magnificent Fiend,” is said to feature "Snarling mercurial Jaguar guitars, wailing full-throttle Hammond B-3 organ and eight new mammoth rock and roll jams!" Record producer RICK RUBIN liked it enough to co-release it with the indy Birdman label, and now Howlin' Rain hits the McCabe’s stage as they tour in support of it. MARK FOSSON, meanwhile, is a completely different animal, as Rolling Stone tells us. "'Sign him quick' says guitarist John Fahey, who the venue calls, “a folk-blues alchemist of high standards and no bullshit.” Fahey wrote that sentiment in 1976, after hearing a demo by Mark Fosson, a Kentucky-born fingerpicker, who soon cut an album for Fahey's Takoma Records. But Fahey was then forced to sell the label, and Fosson's LP went unreleased — until now. Three decades later, Fosson's precise delicacy and melodic inventions on “The Lost Takoma Sessions” on the Drag City label, brightly confirm Fahey's original enthusiasm. The Valley Cultural Center's children’s series places professional musicians in an intimate, educational setting with five hundred K-5th grade children each week throughout the summer. In the middle of summer touring with the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, John McEuen takes a night at the Coffee Gallery in Altadena (voted the #1 cool place in the area to go for 'night things'). Along with his hot picker-singer-writer son NATHAN McEUEN, John brings his banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and news from the road and “the rest of the world,” as well as some new and old favorite songs.

In the midst of another busy year, John will have three documentary films in the market this year for which he wrote the music score (“Sizzle - A Global Warming Comedy;” “Maynard Dixon - Art and Spirit;” “The Last Cowboy”) and can be seen on the road either in his solo shows (about 48 cities this year) or in his 42nd year with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (and Capitol just released a remake of “Mr. Bojangles” by NGDB with Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley). McEuen's XM radio show (“Acoustic Traveller” - channel 15) begins its 4th year. This July, he also started an album production with his lifelong friend, actor STEVE MARTIN, of Martin's original music, for release in 2009.

John McEuen says "the Steve album is coming along great! People will be shocked at how vast and varied his music is, and how hot he plays. Although known as a musician usually as an aside comment like 'oh, I've seen him play banjo... pretty good', this album will show Steve as a composer of unique hot and soulful music, and as a songwriter with an unusal twist for lyrics".

John continues, “Although Martin's yet-to-be-titled album is mainly instrumental, and features such diverse talents as David Amram, Earl Scruggs, McEuen, Craig Eastman and singers Vince Gill and Tim O'Brien, it is hard to pigeonhole as to 'style.' Americana folk traditional instruments are brought to Steve's world of notes where you will hear strains that combine influences to both of them from their past - Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, The Music Man, Copeland's Appalachian Spring, and bluegrass.”

That’s representative of what John describes when he’s on-stage here. These shows always sell out, so call early if you have missed one in the past. Venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “This time, he will be all alone, showing what the solo John McEuen is all about. His NGDB started here in Pasadena, with their first hit on KRLA in 1967 kicking off a music career that has taken John to over 4,000 different venues, 7,000 shoes ... and shows.”

Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.
