WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.

RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.

RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.

7:30 pm LEANN RIMES plays the L.A. County Fair’s “End of Summer Concert Series” in the Grandstand (series runs 19 nights of the Fair).

With her album “This Woman” in 2005, which included the Top 5 hits “Nothin’ ‘Bout Love Makes Sense” and “Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way,” LeAnn fulfilled the promise she showed as a 13-year-old country star. Her promo syas, “Her voice, breathtaking a decade ago, has grown in range and power, along with the kind of soul that comes only through living life.” Her 10th studio album for Curb Records is due this fall, and she has debuted new songs from it on her current tour.

General admission to the nighttime entertainment is free with Fair admission. Reserved seating is $18.50-$35; box seating $22.50-$50; stageside seating $75-$150. Tix at Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com) or in person at the Fairplex box office (or at fairplex.com). Concerts require Fair admission. Acts and schedules subject to change. Most shows begin at 7:30 pm. A limited number of free assigned seats are available for grandstand entertainment. (Including wheelchair access). The line forms on Floral (across from the grandstand). 6-8 am “ALIVE & PICKING” hosted by MARY KATHERINE ALDIN on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, worldwide at www.kpfk.com. As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Dave tells us, “This is another of our backyard invasions, where we bring a stage and a P.A. system, and entertain the troops. I'm partnered with Alexia on this, so you know it will be lots of fun. Our hosts, Linda and Ray, are super cool. They're musicians themselves, and we are really looking forward to hanging out with them, and making some music. Of course, there will be food, and we are starting early enough that we'll have plenty of time for a song-circle. So bring your instruments if ya got 'em. We've got a fair number of RSVP's and are expecting a good turn-out. We wanna make sure we have enough food and drink and chairs and such. Ray and Linda's is about a mile from the ocean in a nice suburban neighborhood with plenty of parking. It's supposed to be very hot in the valleys, so the beach sounds like a good plan. And the yard is green and cool.”

“TWO JOHNS, NO WAITING!” is a collaboration between two solo performers, JOHN M and JOHN ZIPPERER. Both artists have performed at Coffee Gallery in the past. On September 20th they will join forces performing together and separately for this exceptionally diverse and entertaining show.
John Zipperer does vocals, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Mandolin, Keyboard.
John is a singer/songwriter, musician, former instructor of voice and music theory at the world renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. He’s also a former television actor who has appeared on “The Agency,” “Maximum Bob,” and “General Hospital” among other shows and is a veteran of many bands. John has performed and taught with such greats as Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus), Doane Perry (Jethro Tull) Dave Sutton and many other well known names in the Los Angeles music community. His focus on new material and new approaches to familiar material makes every performance fresh and keeps audiences coming back again and again.

John M plays 12 string and 6 string acoustic guitars and sings. A passionate and energetic singer/songwriter, John M has performed and toured all over the United States at such legendary venues as The Bluebird Café in Nashville, The Tin Angel in Philadelphia, Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, and of course our own Coffee Gallery Backstage. He received awards from Just Plain Folks for “Best Holiday Song of the Year,” (for “That’s What Christmas Is To Me,”) and “Best Novelty Song of the year” (for “Music Rowbots.”) He has also received multiple honorable mentions in the Billboard Song contest. His song, “My Mother In Me” was a “most requested song” on radio. He currently has 4 CD’s, A Christmas EP and video, and a feature length DVD documentary film on House Concerts available, and is in production on a 5th CD.

Jim "Kimo" West has performed at many of Hawaii's slack key festivals as well as the Southern California Slack Key Festival in Redondo Beach in both 2008 and 2009. A winner of the Hawaii Music Awards and Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian "Grammy") nominee, Kimo is known for his unique style, original tunings and "nahenahe" sound. He is also a composer for film and TV and has released four CD's of original slack key compositions and arrangements.

Jim "Kimo" West first visited Hana, Maui in 1985, after a long summer on the road as guitarist for famed musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic. As the sounds of Gabby Pahinui, the Sons of Hawai'i, Sonny Chillingworth, The Sunday Manoa, and others, played on the turntable, he jammed along for fun and relaxation. Already a devotee of open tunings, he was immediately drawn to the gentle rhythms of ki ho 'alu (slack key guitar) and soon began writing his own songs. The rich physical and cultural landscape of the Hana Coast has provided the inspiration for many of his compositions. While always retaining the heartfelt essence of traditional slack key, Jim "Kimo" West brings much of his own musical heritage to his original ki ho'alu instrumentals. His style can best be described as "nahenahe", meaning "soft, sweet or gentle voice", a fusion of old and new but still rooted deeply in tradition.

O'ahu native "T. Dan" Hofstedt plays slack-key infused with his rich personal experiences growing up in Hawaii and will be sharing some of his many original songs. He was recently featured in two sold-out performances at the Coffee Gallery in a unique show of Hawaiian "pidgin" English stories and slack-key guitar with Hawaiian storyteller and comedian Kamaka Brown called, "If Can, Can- If No Can, No Can." He has two CD's of original slack-key influenced original compositions.

Hofstedt was introduced to slack key guitar as a teenager growing up in Hawaii where he performed in a Polynesian song and dance revue with the Kalani High School Select Choir, which performed at many venues around Honolulu, as well as a road trip to Nevada, Disneyland, and Mexico where they brought the Aloha Spirit to the mainland. He was part of the choir's Hawaiian trio who backed up the legendary Don Ho at a fundraising concert for a school for special needs children in 1975.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!

(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)

If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!

Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
