Local Festivals:

Fri-Sun, Nov 27-29:
10 am-5 pm Annual “APPLE BUTTER FESTIVAL” with the RILEY'S MOUNTAINEER BAND is part of Los Rios Rancho “Celebratesa Fall Traditions” at Los Rios Rancho, 39611 Oak Glen Rd, Oak Glen; 909-797-1005; www.losriosrancho.com. Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho pays tribute to tradition with its 6th annual Apple Butter Festival Thanksgiving weekend. Pioneer families made a custom of gathering in late fall to cook up apple butter from the last of the season's crop. It was a practical way to preserve the apples throughout the year and a pleasurable way to promote community spirit. Families are invited to come up and share in this fine old tradition, which includes a hands-on demonstration of apple butter-making - the old-time (and slow!) way - outdoors in a big copper kettle. Guests can learn how to "start the snits" and "add the money," plus enjoy pioneer crafts and games, music, carriage rides, and lots more. Events include an old-fashioned hoedown Saturday night, featuring traditional dances and music by the Riley's Mountaineer Band. The Festival is 10 am to 5 pm each day. Festival admission is free (small fees for some activities). Tickets are required for Saturday night's hoedown, and include a supper of pumpkin stew.

Fri, Nov 27; in Chino Hills:
2:30 pm DAVE MORRISON plays a house-style concert at 16375 Canon Ln, Chino Hills. Dave asks, “Full are we? Good. Hope you all had a real sweet Thanksgiving. My first one without my folks, but it was a nice day anyway. Sort of. I joined Ray DeLaPaz and his merry band and we entertained blind folks at CLIMB in Alhambra. Big BIG smiles all around. And today, we do again what we do to be joyful. We are in Chino Hills in a lovely rustic canyon with fine people and a lot of food and drink (kegerator on hand). I'm making my fabbo beef stew right now, and the house smells mighty fine. So come out and have some fun. Bring the family or ditch 'em. And bring guitars if you got 'em. It might be a bit of a drive, but the freeways are deserted.”

“SAN PEDRO SHANTY SING” at the Whale and Ale, 327 W 7th St, San Pedro 90731; 310-832-0363; www.whaleandale.com. Audrey Coleman wrote in FolkWorks, “If you arrive at the official start time, you'll find a chair at the table and friendly people who will let you look at their shanty books so you can sing along. No singing background required. Many of the twenty or so shanty fans who gather around the long wooden dinner table in the restaurant's cozy upstairs meeting room are volunteers with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. They sail ‘tall ship’ sail boats for youth training programs run by the Institute. For them, learning the songs that powered the labor on the 19th century clipper ships has become an extension of learning to sail the ships themselves. Added attractions are Alan's pennywhistle and concertina, Jeff's banjo, Kim's collection of flutes, and Dustin and Lindsay's robust baritone voices. When the table fills up, more chairs are set up around the room. And the Guinness flows freely till about 10:30 pm.” Venue is celebrated in the Yahoo! Travel Guide as “the only Authentic British Restaurant in the South Bay of Los Angeles.”

Fri, Nov 27:
8 pm PO’ GIRL at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Venue impresario and FAR West Folk Alliance Ambassador Award winner Bob Stane says, “I really had to work to get Po' Girl. I got the quartet out of a festival in Grass Valley that is famed for its spectacular acts. Help bring them back again by seeing, and hearing, this famous act tonight. It took me months to get them to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. They’re the real deal.”
+
The beauty and mystery of Po Girl's music – a sound that has beguiled fans the world over - springs from the dynamic, improbable, mesmerizing bond shared by its two principal singers and writers – Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira. Hailing from Montreal and Toronto respectively, both women left untenable home situations at fourteen, found music instead of bad ends, and lived to sing the tales. The interplay between these two stunning performers is truly something to behold. The impossibly talented tickler/maker of all stringed things, Benny Sidelinger and dynamic drummer JJ Jones joined the band several years ago bringing a level completeness and spunk to round out this incredible band.
+
Po’ Girl, plays 21st Century roots music, urban roots – never derivative, not faithfully aping a beloved tradition. They don't re-hash the old forms, they reshape and reinvigorate them for new ears. The echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament, the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk are all delivered with a soulful clarity and depth.
+
They move and move and play and sing. It's quite simple. Always restless, more often than not bone-tired, they write their flashes of sadness, their loss, their good love, their faint dreams of home into songs that matter deeply to them. Like any good art, they are little acts of self-rescue. So you should listen. You aren't much different from them, and who couldn't use a little rescuing these days? Tix, $15.

It’s a lineup of invited songwriters (often some prominent ones) whose individual sets each include a song written to the unique pre-assigned theme of tonight’s event. Though former performing host DANIEL McFEELEY has moved to Australia, the popularity of this event enables it to continue. Venue has good sandwiches, soups, coffeehouse fare. No cover.

8 pm BRUCE MOLSKY plays the FolkWorks Concert Series at First Presbyterian Church, 1220 2nd St, Santa Monica 90401; info, www.folkworks.org. It’s a rare opportunity to see BRUCE MOLSKY in a solo concert. Alone or with fellow musicians, guitar, fiddle, or banjo in hand, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Molsky has been exploring traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades. He synthesizes these musical forms and refracts them through his own evolving sensibilities to the point where the sources of his inspiration transform themselves into a sound that is uniquely his. While he is most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues, from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

7 pm TOM RUSSELL plays the Ojai Concert Series, Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com. Tom Russell is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes. Russell grew up in California, graduated from the University of California with a degree in criminology and taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He also lived in Spain and Norway and played music at a circus in Puerto Rico. He began his musical career in earnest in the early 1970s in Vancouver, playing strip bars. Later he relocated to Texas and formed a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. Along with legions of fans, the media treats him with high regard: "perhaps the finest American folk-roots artist that most Americans never heard of." -All Music Guide. This may well sell-out. More at www.ojaiconcertseries.com/index.files/Page1192.htm. Tix, $20 advance, $25 at door; Kids under age 15 are 1/2 price at door.

They are an energetic Celtic / bluegrass fusion band and two-time winner of the Orange County Music Awards for Best Folk Band. This ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the national Celtic music scene by storm.

8 pm AN EVENING WITH RANDY NEWMAN at UCLA Live in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. Four generations of what Vanity Fair rightly called “the first family of American folk” gather to revive the musical spirit of late patriarch Woody Guthrie. Led by Woody’s son Arlo, a star in his own right, “The Guthrie Family Rides Again” continues the clan’s tradition of sharing its music far and wide. Joining-in are Arlo’s son Abe, who has accompanied his father on keyboards and vocals since the 1980s, daughters Cathy and Annie, and Sarah Lee Guthrie with her husband Johnny Irion - one of the most acclaimed folk-rock duos of the last decade - and various grandkids. The elder generation is represented by Woody’s songs, both the classics and “new” compositions using lyrics uncovered in the Guthrie archives. Tix, $58, $42, $28; UCLA students $15.
