Yes, it’s a rainy weekend, and as we said at the beginning of the week: There’s more rain and cold on the way. So, you probably want to be indoors. That means there’s TV (boring, and overloaded with insipid crap that is apparently some cretin’s “reality”), or going to the movies (waaaay too expensive for an hour-and-a-half of movie, plus the preceding half an hour of being blasted with annoying big screen commercials), or shopping (spending money you don’t have on junk the recipients don’t want), OR, you can treat yourself and a lucky companion to some LIVE MUSIC!
+
It’s all right here for you! And you can send the url to your friends, so they can lavish gratitude upon you; as always, it’s http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com

.
First, here’s a bit of EVENT NEWS
.
===
.
The big JOHN GORKA show, with DAVE MORRISON opening, is tonight, and you should jump right on that one. Gorka plays McCabe’s Saturday night, with the excellent AMILIA SPICER opening there, but it’s sold-out. Meanwhile, tonight’s show marks the return of a folk series to the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena, the longtime home of the legendary series produced by the late Ron Stockfleth. And there are still tix available for Pasadena.
+
The series return, starting-off with John Gorka is most appropriate. No less than Rolling Stone Magazine calls JOHN GORKA “The preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement.”
+
And opening act DAVE MORRISON is named as one of the “Top Ten / Best of 2008” male singer-songwriters in Los Angeles, in FolkWorks, and you’ve heard him perform live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
And we just received word of “Music, pizza, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, tonight all home made.”
+
You can read the Guide’s whole write-up in our “Upcoming / Heads-Up” section, or get your tix right away at asalvatierra@cluela.org or via Paypal, at www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=gBv9Ow-o6w6jnpNx5fb7lTvai3cuXgzBbio3RGEC4KvsZrQPQlwu8ZTnemG&dispatch=50a222a57771920b6a3d7b606239e4d529b525e0b7e69bf0224adecfb0124e9b833248354cf50881e4ea372b2a42d76305e03018dc2a2bc7. Tix, $20.

Part 5 of “ENJOY LIVE MUSIC WHILE YOU BUY YOUR HOLIDAY JUNK
(ER, GIFTS)”
+
(…reduced to what’s still happening, from the original BIG list in the Dec 1 edition):
+
Back to solving The Age-Old Dilemma. They’re a couple. She’s addicted to recreational shopping, and he’d rather have a root canal than be dragged along. The Guide offers a solution. There are events where merchants offer live music, often with other pleasant amenities, to lure shoppers. We reported in recent editions about the music-filled Thanksgiving weekend in Old Pasadena, and the special one-night annual events in Santa Monica, Claremont, and Venice. But it isn’t over: there are still the recurring events that take-on a Holiday character.
+
See the times and dates in the Guide for complete listings, and here’s what to look for.
+
Every Wednesday:
5-8 pm The “CLAREMONT WEDNESDAY GREEN MARKET” features live acoustic music inside and outside the Packing House in Claremont.
+
Every Wednesday:
7-9 pm The weekly “WINE & SONG” series hosted by award-winning songwriter BRAD COLERICK always brings talented musical guests, at WineStyles in South Pasadena, and you can buy bottles of wine there while you hear the music.
+
Every Friday:
11 am-5 pm “FREE FRIDAYS” at the LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART in Long Beach, gives you a chance to shop at the museum store and enjoy the exhibits.
+
Every Friday:
5:30-10 pm The “MONROVIA FAMILY FESTIVAL” offers a four-block street fair in old downtown Monrovia, always with live acoustic music in several places ~ free parking, free event.
+
No doubt there are similar events elsewhere, combining live acoustic music performances with shopping opportunities for the next few weeks. As we learn of more shopping-melee-with-escape-hatch-to-live-acoustic-music events, we’ll let you know.
+
AT EVERY PERFORMANCE VENUE:
There’s that always-wonderful holiday gift idea: give your music-loving friends a CD of the act you just heard!

Fri, Dec 11; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm JOHN GORKA plays the kick-off concert, with DAVE MORRISON opening, as Folk Music Returns to Neighborhood Church, 301 N Orange Grove Bl, Pasadena. Fondly remembered as the home venue for the long-running series that ended with the death of its founder, Ron Stockfleth.
+
It’s an appropriate return, since no less than Rolling Stone Magazine calls JOHN GORKA “The preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement.”
+
DAVE MORRISON is named as one of the “Top Ten / Best of 2008” male singer-songwriters in Los Angeles, in FolkWorks, and you’ve heard him perform live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
For many years, Neighborhood Church was known nationally for monthly folk concerts featuring a wide variety of prominent artists. In response to the growing interest in music “by the people for the people,” original acoustic music is returning to the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church.
+
John Gorka is the ideal artist to kick off the rebirth of the famous venue. Gorka is a master storyteller known for the emotional depth, intelligence and power of his beautiful songs. His latest CD is due for release just before the concert. John will be accompanied by special guest Dave Morrison, a local singer-songwriter and long-time leader in the Pasadena / Altadena and Southern Cal folk scene.

The concert series is a collaborative effort by lafreebee, Isgoodmusic, SideCho Records, Heart Music Group, Casa Downtown, Grand Performances and the artists themselves. Rolando Marin of lafreebee describes the event as an opportunity to see a future Coachella performer before they make it big. Recently, local bands like the Airborne Toxic Event and Silversun Pickups went from playing small local venues to sold-out arenas worldwide. Indie music is to Los Angeles today what grunge music was to Seattle in the 90’s. There’s an abundance of local talent and its thrilling to see these bands evolve and succeed. Every month, Friday Night Sessions will introduce a new line-up of bands you won’t want to miss. Concerts are scheduled through the winter and spring months on the 2nd Friday of the month. Performances begin at 7 pm on the Grand Avenue courtyard, adjacent to Casa. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tracy Newman, the sister of Saturday Night Live’s original cast member - Laraine Newman, is a television writer and producer. Her first writing job, along with her partner Jonathan Stark, was on staff at Cheers. From there they wrote on a number of other sitcoms, including Bob, The Nanny, Hiller and Diller, and The Drew Carey Show. In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for co-writing the “coming out” episode of Ellen. Tracy has been a songwriter throughout her television career and recently released her first CD, “A Place in the Sun.” (www.cdbaby.com/cd/tracynewman.) She works with two other singers – Gene Lippmann and Lorie Doswell, (www.loriedoswell.com.), who together are the Reinforcements. Tracy's song "Waffle Boy" is a winner in the 8th Annual Great American Song Contest. (scroll down their page) It was selected one of the Top 5 winners in the Special Music category. Tracy's song "Mama, I Know You Ain't Santa," which she co-wrote with Lynne Stewart, has just won second place in the prestigious Unisong contest, in the category of Seasonal/Specialty Songs. In addition, a few of Tracy's other songs have received honors at Unisong. "Hands off the Phone" is an Honorable Mention in the Folk/Acoustic category, "Cowboy" is in AAA/Alternative for an Honorable Mention, and the lyrics for "The Boy Who Mans the Waffle Irons," is one of the top 20 under the Lyrics category.
+
As a troubadour for the Digital Age, Garret Swayne's songs are a chronicle of his life and times. If there's a unifying theme to his music, it's about Connection--the idea that we're really all of one heart when we get beneath the surface. This is evidenced in the warm reception he receives wherever he performs. Originally from Baltimore, he has traveled the nation and the world, charming audiences throughout the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia and even the former Soviet Bloc with his one-of-a-kind brand of Americana.
"It's always been about the song", says Garret. "I've always admired songwriting craft above everything else." So from Gershwin to Lennon/McCartney, Carole King to Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon to Sting to Kurt Cobain, it's always been the great classic tunesmiths that Garret considered his heroes. Their genre of music didn't much matter. Garret's unique, country-rock "folkabilly" sound was forged from a number of different sources--Classic Rock, Motown, R&B, the Folk Tradition, The Blues, and a little, Country Western. Tix, $15.

Fri, Dec 11; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm PHIL LEE with SEVERIN BROWNE at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Americana / roots performer Phil Lee plays his own special blend of rockabilly and roots music. His new CD, "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You," hit # 1 on the Euro-Americana radio chart and # 4 on FAR (freeform American roots) radio chart.
+
Associated Press describes Lee as "combining the social conscience of Woody Guthrie with the twisted fury of Jerry Lee Lewis." Singing with no apologies -- and certainly no regrets -- Lee moves seamlessly from the gut-bucket blues of "Jemima James" to the poignant Beatles-influenced "We Cannot Be Friends Anymore." And the Nashville Scene said if there were a Music City Mount Rushmore "to save the fourth head for Phil Lee," the other heads being John Prine, Guy Clark and Lucinda Williams. That's sure good company for the singer-songwriter based in Nashville.
+
Lee's music is "irreverent, ragged and beautiful in its simplicity." Lee crafts songs that are home to a cast of social misfits, outcasts, petty criminals and people living on the fringe. When music journalist Peter Cooper at the Nashville Tennesean wrote that Lee is the "Don Rickles of disenfranchised Nashwang," he captures somewhat the essence of Lee. Truly, Lee is a man who has lived much of the colorful life about which he writes and sings.
+
Plus,
SEVERIN BROWNE, a guest multiple times on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and one of Southern California’s most enduringly popular songwriters. When Severin Browne makes music, the room comes alive. His rich harmonies and excellent musicianship are exciting and infectious. You will be brought to the heights of joy and back again to take an inward journey. The music delights and amazes, gratifies and surprises. His banter will keep you laughing, the music will make you soar, and by the end of their performance, you will have grown. Venue impresario and Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award honoree Bob stane says, “This is a show not to be missed.” Tix, $15.

+
The Americana Music Circle at Kulak's Woodshed in Los Angeles has been a local showcase for 10 years. Performing host Lauren Adams, who has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” tell us, “The circle is a place for songwriters to enjoy themselves, stretch out and meet new comrades each month. The format of our show is to have a local or emerging artist open the show. Next, a three artist song circle takes the stage and then, a touring artist or artist of note to close our show. The circle is designed to encourage the artists to play and sing on each other's songs and that can lead to some magical musical moments. Not for the faint of heart or the novice, the musicians in the circle are well seasoned and comfortable with the living room atmosphere we try to encourage. The reunion is a joyful celebration of community with 12 songwriters reuniting to perform for two hours in front of our friends and fans. Please join us in celebrating and also in celebrating Kulak’s Woodshed 10 years of loving service to the songwriting community.” All artists donate their performances to the venue. Venue expects a $10 donation in lieu of a cover charge.

Fri, Dec 11:
9 pm THE PRESTON SMITH SHOW with his acoustic jazz band at Giovanni's, 21801 Ventura Bl, Woodland Hills (just E of Topanga exit off the 101 fwy). "Preston is a singing, guitar and harmonica playing virtuoso of blues and jazz… His stuff is upbeat, intelligent and classy, He's known for his widespread appeal to a variety of audiences and some say his music knows no boundaries. While Smith's songwriting skills have received a big thumbs up from critics all over the map, his live gigs are legendary." - John Sollenberger, July 28 2006, The Pasadena Weekly.
+
Preston appeared on "The Tonight Show" along with the late Jimmy Stewart and released an album on Curb Records entitled "Preston Smith." He was featured on the hit movie soundtrack "Cocktail" starring Tom Cruise with the title song "Oh I Love You So," which he composed, produced and performed. 8 pm HIGH HILLS BLUEGRASS BAND plays their FAREWELL PERFORMANCE at Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; www.boulevardmusic.com; 310-398-2583. Venue’s web site has a helpful local dining guide.
+
Reservations are strongly recommended; this popular group’s fans will probably flock to see Laura, Virginia, Leslie, and Cheryl do their final show together. Playing in venues from large concert halls and huge outdoor festivals to intimate coffee houses, the members of High Hills have “enjoyed the thrill of making great music together and the honor of sharing it with happy, receptive audiences,” and they add, “We feel so grateful to have had so many wonderful opportunities to share our music with you!”
+
They continue, “As some of you may know, Laura is relocating to the Seattle area, where she is looking forward to living among the tall pines, enjoying the rain, playing her guitar and banjo, and writing some more music. Each member of High Hills has her unique musical interests, goals, and projects. Leslie looks forward to continuing writing music and playing her guitar and mandolin....and yes, even the piano! Cheryl's love of vocal music will be a growing part of her life. Virginia's musical teaching and wonderful songwriting continue to be a great passion for her. Though each of us is sad about the conclusion of our years together as a band, we look forward to continuing our friendship and to exploring our individual musical pursuits. We'll see what develops for each of us as the future unfolds!”
+
The ladies conclude, “We feel so blessed to have played for wonderful audiences in over 60 different venues and hundreds of performances over our years. Most precious to us is the fact that so many people in our audiences have become our friends -- people who we've come to look forward to seeing when we perform. We are so grateful for the support and friendship you have given us over the years. We have wonderful memories of you all -- and we'll miss you! We'd love to see you at our farewell performance Saturday at Boulevard Music.” More at www.HighHills.com and www.LauraSilverstein.com.

8 pm AN EVENING WITH RANDY NEWMAN at UCLA Live in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A. UCLA ticket office: 310-825-2101 or www.uclalive.org. The promo calls him, “America’s premiere musical fabulist,” and Randy Newman has maintained a remarkable balance of trenchant vignettes, exaggerated outrage and, especially in his film work, earnest sentiment. His latest album, “Harps and Angels,” employs sardonic wit and self-deprecation on a level worthy of Mark Twain. And Newman’s wry classics, including “Political Science,” “I Love L.A.,” and his much-played during the aftermath of Katrina, “Louisiana 1927,” have only grown in relevance with time. But Newman shines most brightly in his rare concert appearances, where his mischievous presence complements his musical and storytelling talents. Tix, $65, $50, $40; UCLA students $15.

Four generations of what Vanity Fair rightly called “the first family of American folk” gather to revive the musical spirit of late patriarch Woody Guthrie. Led by Woody’s son Arlo, a star in his own right, “The Guthrie Family Rides Again” continues the clan’s tradition of sharing its music far and wide. Joining-in are Arlo’s son Abe, who has accompanied his father on keyboards and vocals since the 1980s, daughters Cathy and Annie, and Sarah Lee Guthrie with her husband Johnny Irion - one of the most acclaimed folk-rock duos of the last decade - and various grandkids. 1. Hi Larry, I'd just like to clarify that the new music series at the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena is in no way connected with Ron Stockfleth's original "Acoustic Music Series" at that location. I'm sure the new series will be fabulous, but Ron's series ended in March of 2005. He chose in his final days to end the series rather than to pass it on to other hands. A minor point to some, perhaps, but it would be important to Ron that this be known. Thanks!
