Yes, it’s a rainy weekend, and as we said at the beginning of the week: There’s more rain and cold on the way. So, you probably want to be indoors. That means there’s TV (boring, and overloaded with insipid crap that is apparently some cretin’s “reality”), or going to the movies (waaaay too expensive for an hour-and-a-half of movie, plus the preceding half an hour of being blasted with annoying big screen commercials), or shopping (spending money you don’t have on junk the recipients don’t want), OR, you can treat yourself and a lucky companion to some LIVE MUSIC!

MARINA V HAS A HOLIDAY GIFT FOR YOU
Yes, we know, a LOT of artists are making free MP3s available as Christmas gifts to their fans. Back to solving The Age-Old Dilemma. They’re a couple. She’s addicted to recreational shopping, and he’d rather have a root canal than be dragged along. The Guide offers a solution. There are events where merchants offer live music, often with other pleasant amenities, to lure shoppers. We reported in recent editions about the music-filled Thanksgiving weekend in Old Pasadena, and the special one-night annual events in Santa Monica, Claremont, and Venice. But it isn’t over: there are still the recurring events that take-on a Holiday character.

10 am-6 pm SAWDUST ART FESTIVAL’s closing weekend of the 19th annual “Winter Fantasy - A World of Art and Imagination” at Sawdust Art Festival, 935 Laguna Canyon Rd, Laguna Beach 92651; 949-494-3030. Over 170 artists and craftspeople from all over Southern California and beyond are on the Winter Fantasy grounds for one last weekend creating, exhibiting and selling their unique handcrafted artwork. Puppy adoption in conjunction with the Pet Rescue Group, Shar Pei Rescue and Cuddly Canines, the Winter Fantasy will be holding a pet puppy adoption at the gazebo location in Town Square.

He is also a songwriter whose works have been recorded by Linda Rondstat, Chicago, Pointer Sisters, Natalie Imbruglia, Eels, Chris Botti, and yes, Olivia Newton John, among others. Mark has just finished his first CD of solo fingerstyle guitar music. Somewhere between Michael Hedges and Joe Pass, between Egberto Gismonti and Erik Satie, Mark’s trying to create music that’s both evocative and reflective, that will appeal to both guitarists and non guitarists alike.

Gaby Moreno, a soulful new songwriter, is a transplant from Guatemala City, Guatemala. It was there that Gaby first learned to speak English by playing and singing along with such greats as BB King, Robert Johnson and Nina Simone. Notes Moreno "My mom bought me this really cheap nylon string guitar when I was 14, and we became inseparable. I somehow started figuring out Jimi Hendrix songs with it." Gaby gravitated to Los Angeles, CA in 2001 where she attended The Musician’s Institute and honed her craft. Her unique songwriting (she writes in English and Spanish) won her many new fans. In addition, the LA music community took notice and Gaby soon found herself writing songs with some incredibly talented musicians and producers. "Meant to Fly," (co-written by Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida) a song that came from one of the writing sessions was recorded by the winner of Canadian Idol 2006 (Eva Avila). More recently, she made history as the first Latin category winner to take home the "Maxell Song of the Year" Award for her song "Escondidos", written with Ari Shine and Victor Indrizzo. She was presented with the Maxell Song of the Year award at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, where Fergie made a stop on her Verizon VIP Tour. For the first time, the winner of the coveted prize had the opportunity to open a show for an award winning multi-platinum artist.

David Piltch is the youngest of three children, and his older brother Robert is one of Canada's finest guitarists and was David's first music teacher. Susan, the eldest, is also a fine musician and plays flute and piano. She can be heard performing with the flute/guitar duo, LaBrash/Piltch, originating from the beautiful Caledon, Ontario area, or featured on their two CD's, NATURE'S PLAY and THE MOON AND FLOWERS. Hurray for sibling rivalry. Both of David's parents provided the perfect environment for a creative musical family. Bernie, a "musician's musician," was a role model not only for his children, but also for two generations of woodwind and reed players, from the late forties to the early eighties in Toronto's diverse music scene. Bernie can be heard on a classic recording featuring Duke Ellington, entitled, NORTH OF THE BORDER.

As teenagers during the late seventies, David and brother, Rob, could often be heard performing with their father and with the many Jazz groups playing around the Toronto scene. David became a "regular" at Bourbon Street (a Toronto Jazz club) and played with famous musicians such as Chet Baker, Art Pepper, Zoot Sims, Mose Allison, George Coleman. and many others. In 1979, David did a stint with Blood, Sweat and Tears, which included recording the album, NUCLEAR BLUES. In 1981, the road led David to Japan for the first time and six months on tour with Chuck Mangione. In 1983, David formed the group, Strangeness Beauty. This instrumental trio was an innovative ensemble employing conceptual writing and improvisation, and was comprised of Ron Allen, saxophone and lyracon (wind synthesiser), and Michael Sloski, drums. Entering the world of singers, David began recording and performing with Mary Margaret O'Hara, then later k.d. lang and Holly Cole (Trio). Presently, David lives in California and can be heard on upcoming recordings with Holly Cole, k.d. lang, Eddi Reader, Paul Young and Kenny Loggins.

11 am-3 pm “FREE TRAIN RIDES” behind miniature steam locomotives Los Angeles Live Steamers (LALS) Railroad Museum, 5202 Zoo Dr. Griffith Park, L.A. 90027. It is closed on rainy days. If you’re too broke for the train under the Christmas tree, or even for the tree, then this will lift your spirits and rekindle all those childhood memories of the miniature train under the tree. Except this one is big enough to ride, and it’s pulled by a real steam locomotive. LALS is a non-profit corporation that was founded in 1956. It was started by train enthusiasts for the purpose of educating people in railroad history and lore and also to further the avocation of live steam, gas-mechanical and electronic railroad technology. They operate 7 1/2 inch-gauge (distance between the rails) model trains for the general public to ride from 11 am-3 pm every Sunday (weather permitting). The gate is open from 10:45 am to 3 pm. In addition, they have extensive layouts for 4 3/4” and 3 1/2” gauge model trains. Passengers must be at least 34″ in height, and weigh under 350 lbs. to ride. The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum survives solely on donations by fans who visit and ride the trains. Admission is free but be kind and give the suggested donation of $3.
