We have indeed been publishing regularly on our main sites, BUT, a computer crash – one that also took out our backup – left us without our mailing lists and entry codes to post to our partner sites. We’ve partially reconstructed things. If you were getting the GUIDE directly in your inbox (not through another source) or if you would like to “go direct,” just let us know!

+
American songster Larry Hanks is known as a folksingers' folksinger, longtime favorite of heroes like Michael Cooney, Art Thieme, and the late Sam Hinton. Hanks has been delighting audiences for over 50 years with his deep bass voice, sparse acoustic guitar accompaniments, and acclaimed Jew's Harp. Hanks is probably best known for his classic original, "Apple Picker's Reel".
+
Larry can be heard on recordings of DAVID GRISMAN, JODY STECHER & KATE BRISLIN, MIKE SEEGER, and many others; and he has performed with UTAH PHILLIPS, GORDON BOK, FRED HOLSTEIN, MARTYN WYNDHAM-READ, ELIZABETH COTTEN, MALVINA REYNOLDS, GEOFF MULDAUR, and on and on.
+
Now performing with wife and musical partner, DEBORAH ROBINS, the two are becoming even more beloved for an eclectic repertoire of American traditional, work, blues, and political songs; the music of Utah Phillips, Larry Penn, Leadbelly, Sam Hinton, Stephen Foster; and others in the pantheon of American vernacular/working people's music. He says, “We perform at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, the Old Songs Festival (NY), and annually tour the US and alternately, the UK.”
+
Hanks & Robins bring a warm and homey stage presence, most comfortable in creating an intimate musical evening, long remembered by all in attendance. Michael Cooney, beloved folksinger in his own right, raves about the duo's recent CD, “No Hiding Place,” saying, “...This is why I got into folk music to begin with!”
+
The Boston Globe's Folk Music Critic, Scott Alarik, calls their CD, “A drop of the pure!” while John Cohen's glowing critique includes, “Wonderful and challenging!” among his fond comments. You can listen to audio clips from Larry & Deborah's CDs at www.cdbaby.com/cd/hanksrobins and www.cdbaby.com/cd/hanksrobins2

“I CAN: REQUIEM FOR I CAN'T,” the first project generated by “Cultivate / Create,” examines Ending Violence Against Women, presented at A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) at Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), 685 Venice Bl, Venice (the Old Venice Police Station).and runs March 31 through April 22
+
Music events combine with exhibitions, film, and theatre in a series that will premiere throughout Los Angeles County through July 2012. It’s made possible by the Arts Commission’s Cultivate/Create Initiative. The first of these is this art installation and performance, created by artists Barbara T. Smith and Nina Juns.
+
The artists, in collaboration with AWBW, have designed a participatory project that creates a communal space for healing and transformation from domestic violence and sexual assault. Designed to mobilize survivors statewide, the public component of this artwork launches with an installation and performance building upon AWBW’s 20 years of pioneering experience in using art against abuse.
+
Events surrounding the installation-performance include an opening ceremony today, an evening reception on April 19, coinciding with the Venice Art Crawl, and a conversation with the artists on April 22.
+
All events are free. For more information, go to www.awbw.org.
+
Cultivate/Create, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts with a matching grant from the Los Angeles County Productivity Investment Fund, enables arts organizations to increase funds from external sources to commission new works of art. In April 2011, the initiative granted nine arts organizations $10,000, all of which were matched dollar-for-dollar by contributions from new individual donors.
+
Other new works of art commissioned through Cultivate/Create include an “outer-disciplinary” music event at Highways Performance Space, a workshop presentation of performance artist Casey Smith’s “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” by Circle X Theatre Company and artists Miwa Matreyek and Steve Ellison’s (Flying Lotus) film/music collaboration, “The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come,” at Center for the Arts Eagle Rock. More details of about these and other Cultivate/Create works will be released at a later date.
+
For more information about other arts organizations involved in this initiative and their respective commissions, visit http://www.lacountyarts.org/cultivate_create.html.
+

Sat, Mar 31, WORKSHOP for artists:
1 pm “HOW TO PLAY BASS GUITAR” with MIKE LEY is the latest in the “BEST BOOT FORWARD WORSHOP SERIES” at the Autry National Center (Autry Museum) in the classroom complex, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park, Los Angeles 90027. Info and reservations, 818-365-8709 or wmacc2000@yahoo.com. Presented by the Western Music Association’s California Chapter.
+
Mike Ley will explain the relationship between one chord and another and where the bass fits in the picture. He will be explaining the use of the circle of 5ths and the Nashville system of playing songs in different keys. He will cover what patterns to play on different types of songs. Mike will be using the bass guitar for demonstration but everything will be directly applicable to the upright bass. Mike encourages everyone to bring a bass guitar.
+
Mike brings a different approach to playing the bass. He thinks the main goal of a bass player is to join with the other rhythm instruments in laying down the "rug" that supports the lead instruments and vocalists. "Less in more" when it comes to playing the bass. "One right note is so much more effective than two wrong ones."
+
Mike is a WMA member and currently the bass player for the RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE and the CODY BRYANT EXPERIENCE. He has worked in the Country-Western field with various artists including ROY ROGERS, EDDIE DEAN, HAROLD HENSLEY, CLIFFIE STONE, MOLLY BEE, HANK PENNY, STUART HAMBLIN, HARVEY WALKER, and many others. He started out playing mandolin at age 4 and eventually added the guitar, banjo, harmonica and electric and acoustic bass. He was in the house band at the Whisky-A-Go Go and has worked with LITTLE ANTHONY, SONNY AND CHER, SONNY KNIGHT, SUGGIE OTTIS, THE LETTERMEN, THE COASTERS, ETTA JAMES and many others. Mike is also an accomplished songwriter and teamed up with poet LES BUFFHAM to write "Nobody Kisses Their Horse Anymore" which was nominated for several WMA awards.

And hear Michael's passion for life as he sings and talks about his friend, Gamble Rogers at www.youtube.com/watch?v=okWNcIvtjGw.
+
Michael has written many other fine songs. Caltech Folk producers say, “You'd better be ready to buy a CD or two, because he just can't fit them all in. He can be funny, insightful, poetic, and literary.”
+
See and hear Michael, joined by ANNE HILLS, doing his tribute to King Tut, “Dead Egyptian Blues,” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fULzCgoigPg.
+
Hear him perform “Some Things Are Finely Done,” at www.michaelpetersmith.com/chgo-ton-vid1.shtml.
+
On “Heartfelt Music,” John Davis’ radio program, he introduced Michael's recording, “Michael, Margaret, Pat & Kate,” some years ago. He did that for his listeners by playing a few songs a week, because he wanted to play it all, but also savor it over a period of time.
+
Paul Zollo wrote, “Hearing the songs of Michael Smith in this day and age is like reading an anthology of Hemingway’s short stories after decades of only comic books. It’s a realization that songs can hold a whole lot more than they’re usually expected to hold, they can possess a genuine sense of place and time as evocative and magical as the finest literature.”
+
More on Michael and his career at www.michaelpetersmith.com.
+
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children.

+
Los Angeles Women in Music, LAWIM, presents a fast paced, comprehensive workshop on dynamic songwriting production with before and after recordings, structured “to kick your creative juices into high gear.”
+
You can bring ONE song on CD for production critique following the presentation, plus, one lucky attendee will win a free one-on-one consultation. Raffle ticket included with paid reservation.
+
The promo says, “Think like a music producer and make your songs broadcast/radio ready for success. Put the manuals away and get ready for a fast paced, comprehensive workshop that focuses on the ‘craft’ of dynamic songwriting production. No tech-talk or engineering terms... just the art of creating original music from a simple vocal / keyboard / guitar demo to a fully realized marketable song. You'll hear before and after recordings that will kick your creative juices into high gear. It's all about the songs, not the equipment.”
+
You'll learn how to add emotion, heart & soul, and dynamics into your vocals; create production value using backing vocals, counter melodies and unique instrumentation; turn your demo into a song that's broadcast/radio ready; find & work with a producer that's right for your style of music; develop the professional tools you'll need to present yourself as someone who's "relevant" in the music industry; craft dynamically engaging melodies and arrangements; and lots more.
+
GUY MARSHALL is a gold and platinum award winning songwriter/producer and a 27+ year veteran of the music industry. He has written or produced music for artists such as Pat Benatar, The Tuesdays, Robert Tepper, and for film and television shows including Baywatch, Rocky IV, The Cobra, Lionheart, the LA Kings, Turner Broadcast Network, Dr. Laura and others.
Marshall also teaches and lectures at The Musicians’ Institute, Pierce College, The Los Angeles Music Academy, the Learning Annex, and The Songwriters’ Guild of America, UCLA,Santa Monica College, to name a few. He has done A&R work for TAXI, and been a guest teacher and panelist at their annual ROAD RALLY.
+
You'll have a chance to ask questions and play your songs and get a producer's perspective on your songs and their "window" of marketability.
+
Bring ONE original song on CD. We guarantee a minimum of 12-15 songs will be chosen via random drawing and listened to following the presentation.

HAMPTON, CARIN MARIE & PONY EXPRESS, BRENN HILL, JON CHANDLER & THE WICHITONES, DORIS DALEY, ADRIAN THE BUCKAROO GIRL, GARY ROBERTSON, THE BATTALION BAND OF CALIFORNIA, and many more.
+
This has become the top western music festival in America, with all-day Saturday & Sunday events at Gene Autry’s old western town movie set, Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in Newhall (Santa Clarita), where there are multiple stages of music, cowboy poetry, top-quality western attire, art and more you can buy, plus good food you can carry to your seat at any of the stages.
+
The movie set town becomes a true Brigadoon, as vendors move into the storefronts and bring them to life for the weekend. It’s the only film set where the buildings have complete interiors, so it’s the only place where this is even possible.
+
The festival takes maximum advantage of all the possibilities at this unique site and nearby historic places, including silent movie star William S. Hart’s ranch. Events begin Thursday at historic sites and concert halls, and local western history tours are available Thursday and Friday. There’s even a musical western BBQ in a museum village of restored historic buildings. All the “extras” sell-out, so hop on it.
+
One free and unofficial event is the annual gathering of western musicians playing the festival at the Saugus Café for evening jams.
+
Tix and info for all events are available at www.cowboyfestival.org or 661-250-3735. Yee-Hah!

+
The Guide has celebrated DAFNI many times, and ran a glowing review when her latest CD was released. More on her in a moment.
+
First, let’s look at THE GOOD INTENTIONS. From Liverpool, UK, they’re the winners of the British Country Music Association's Americana Act of the Year. Featured on their tour of California are Peter Davies (vocal, guitar) and Gabrielle Monk (vocal, accordion, percussion), joined on stage by L.A.'s very own Rick Shea (one of Dave Alvin's original Guilty Men) on mandolin.
+
The Good Intentions are back in California following the release of their acclaimed second album: "Someone Else's Time" (Boronda Records).
+
The album was mostly recorded in LA and was produced by Rick, with various local musicians also involved, so Peter and Gabrielle pretty much think of SoCal as their home from home.
+
They have been described as "Liverpool's Carter Family", playing songs with a timeless country-folk feel but also a modern twist.
+
"Someone Else's Time" - Americana Gazette Album of the Year - "compelling Americana" MIDWEST RECORD - "a remarkably assured and confident album" COUNTRY CHART.COM - "assured Anglo-Americana folk-country" LONESOME HIGHWAY.
+
Now, back to DAFNI.
+
“Petite singer, songwriter and guitarist Dafni creates music hearkening back to Tin Pan Alley, with elements of an Appalachian barn dance and the feel of a Parisian street corner blended in the mix. But her music is much more than that. She pulls in myriad influences ranging from Nina Simone, Frank Zappa, [Nick Cave and the Bad] Seeds, Ani DiFranco, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, the Beatles and many others. Some influences may be from times long-gone, but she blends them into tales of contemporary life and love designed to capture the listener’s heart.” - John Sollenberger, Pasadena Weekly.
+
Remember the indomitable KIKI WOW? She just booked this double-act for her series on the Central Coast, and raved about the great night they brought her audience there.

8 pm GONZALO BERGARA QUARTET plays Boulevard Music in Culver City. Info, www.boulevardmusic.com.
+
Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina Gonzalo is considered one of the best guitar players in America. You will hear a mix of Gypsy Jazz and Latin acoustic music with melodies you will not forget. The music is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France, with traditional proto-jazz and a hint of Gonzalo’s native Argentina and its Buenos Aires sound.
+
After having toured the world extensively next to the JOHN JORGENSON QUINTET, native Argentinian Gonzalo Bergara is presenting his new CD “Porteña Soledad” with glowing reviews all over the world.
+
Gonzalo began playing professionally at age 16 in Buenos Aires. By 17 he was already fronting his own blues trio on National Television. He arrived in America in the year 2000 and since then he has performed and recorded with hundreds of artists inlcuding Tim Hausser from Manhattan Transfer, Sylvie Vartan, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, John Jorgenson, Howard Alden and more.
+
His CD “Porteña Soledad” was editor’s Pick in Guitar Player magazine, while Vintage Guitar magazine called it “a Masterpiece.” The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet is Gonzalo on lead acoustic guitar, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar, Rob Hardt on clarinet and tenor saxophone, and David Tranchina on upright bass.
+
"Gonzalo Bergara’s music exists in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on every phrase, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious. And deeply moving."
+
Gonzalo has performed all over the world including Croatia, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Argentina, Brazil, England, Scotland and all of the US. Festivals such as The Montreal Jazz Fest, Playboy Jazz Fest, Sweet and Hot Jazz fest, Django Reinhardt Fest in Germany, Suev guitar fest in Italy, Merle Fest, Strawberry Fest, all for the Django Fests in the US and lots lots more. Tix, $15.

+
Ronny is a talented musician and performer who is best known for his acting career. He has appeared in many classic movies such as Deliverance (Drew Ballinger), Bound For Glory (Ozark Bule), The Onion Field (Det. Sgt. Pierce R. Brooks), Taps (Colonel Kerby), Beverly Hills Cop (Lt. +
But Ronny's real love is music and he spends half of his time performing at folk festivals, concert venues and small intimate theaters. He has performed musically on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Bottom Line in New York with Leon Redbone, National Public Radio's Mountain Stage with Guy Clark, as well as other national stages.

When Karen Mal sings, it’s an experience ranging from raw sensuality to shimmering bell-like clarity. Her voice is both tender and powerful, as effortless as a waterfall. There's a river that flows between Karen and her audience. It's about love. The possibility and the unbearable beauty of it. Elusive and abundant at the same time.
+
Based in Austin, Texas, Karen has created a name for herself as a captivating singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. Ranging from charming to seductive, impressionistic to philosophical, her songs have brought her nationwide acclaim. Shes won top awards from the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival in Texas, the Tucson Folk Festival and the Portland Songwriters Association and has also been a three time New Folk Finalist at Kerrville, emerging artist at Falcon Ridge and a finalist at the Sisters Folk Festival.
+
Karen has released three CDs on Waterbug records, starting with “Mercury's Wings” in 2002. “Karen Mal is riding a musical high,” raved Sing Out! magazine about that debut. “Dark Eyed Sailor” was next, a collection of traditional Celtic songs, and its title cut won the Celtic Radio Music Award for best song in 2006. Her third CD, “The Space Between,” came out in late 2007 and received extensive airplay, reaching #6 on the Folk DJ Chart. Tix, $20.

7 pm JOHN GORKA plus ROSE COUSINS at McCabe’s in Santa Monica. ‏You know about folk star Gorka, so let’s focus on the wonderfully talented artist who is supporting him on this tour.
+
ROSE COUSINS' latest album, “We Have Made A Spark,” was released February 28 and has been getting rave reviews (USA Today, WXPN, No Depression, and more). Her CD release shows in Boston & NYC were deemed “a blast.”
+
“It’s no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection.”—Boston Globe
+
“Some voices hit you hard from first blush and this is one of them.”—Exclaim!
+
Produced by Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter) at Q Division Studios, the record brings together performances by EDIE CAREY, AMY CORREIA, LAURA CORTESE, KRIS DELMHORST, ANA EGGE, MARK ERELLI, JENNIFER KIMBALL, AUSTIN NEVINS, ROSE POLENZANI, plus SESSION AMERICANA members BILLY BEARD and DINTY CHILD, and multi-instrumentalists SEAN STAPLES & CHARLIE ROSE. The album’s 11 tracks are all products of these collaborations, though each is anchored by Cousins’ lead vocals and guitar and piano playing.
+
In addition to the new album, a short film entitled “If I Should Fall Behind” documents the collaborative recording process and attempts to capture a slice of the rich community in which the record was made. The film takes its title from the BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN song of the same name, a cover of which appears on the album in a duet with MARK ERELLI. “That song really resonates with me,” says Cousins. “The idea that no one gets left behind…That’s really the concept of “We Have Made A Spark.” Making music with friends. Everyone having a turn. It’s about celebrating people as individuals (whether in a couple or a group) and how we can also be strong together.” The single, “If I Should Fall Behind,” is available to stream for free on www.rosecousins.com as well as for purchase on DVD.
+
Cousins tours extensively throughout North America, the U.K. and Ireland, playing to a loyal following of listeners. Her many Canadian awards include the 2011 East Coast Music Awards for Female Solo Recording and Songwriter of the Year and the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards Contemporary Singer of the Year.

7 pm GONZALO BERGARA QUARTET at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
“JOHN JORGENSON praised Gonzalo from the stage of the Coffee Gallery Backstage. He did so at length and often. This is an outstanding musical show.” – Bob Stane, CGB impresario.
Tix, $20.
