Thu, Mar 29, a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm THE GOOD INTENTIONS from the UK, with RICK SHEA sitting in, plus a set by DAFNI, a marvelous singer-songwriter with 1930s-style originals, at at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-798-6236 (call 10 am-10 pm).
+
The Guide has celebrated DAFNI many times, and ran a glowing review when her latest CD was released. More on her in a moment.
+
First, let’s look at THE GOOD INTENTIONS. From Liverpool, UK, they’re the winners of the British Country Music Association's Americana Act of the Year. Featured on their tour of California are Peter Davies (vocal, guitar) and Gabrielle Monk (vocal, accordion, percussion), joined on stage by L.A.'s very own Rick Shea (one of Dave Alvin's original Guilty Men) on mandolin.
+
The Good Intentions are back in California following the release of their acclaimed second album: "Someone Else's Time" (Boronda Records).
+
The album was mostly recorded in LA and was produced by Rick, with various local musicians also involved, so Peter and Gabrielle pretty much think of SoCal as their home from home.
+
They have been described as "Liverpool's Carter Family", playing songs with a timeless country-folk feel but also a modern twist.
+
"Someone Else's Time" - Americana Gazette Album of the Year - "compelling Americana" MIDWEST RECORD - "a remarkably assured and confident album" COUNTRY CHART.COM - "assured Anglo-Americana folk-country" LONESOME HIGHWAY.
+
Now, back to DAFNI.
+
“Petite singer, songwriter and guitarist Dafni creates music hearkening back to Tin Pan Alley, with elements of an Appalachian barn dance and the feel of a Parisian street corner blended in the mix. But her music is much more than that. She pulls in myriad influences ranging from Nina Simone, Frank Zappa, [Nick Cave and the Bad] Seeds, Ani DiFranco, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, the Beatles and many others. Some influences may be from times long-gone, but she blends them into tales of contemporary life and love designed to capture the listener’s heart.” - John Sollenberger, Pasadena Weekly.
+
Remember the indomitable KIKI WOW? She just booked this double-act for her series on the Central Coast, and raved about the great night they brought her audience there.
+

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).

We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.

We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.)

And, as Spring blooms and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.

As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)!
