Fri, May 18, in Ventura Co; a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm EAGLES songwriter JACK TEMPCHIN plus JENI & BILLY play “THE CAMARILLO CAFÉ CONCERT SERIES,” at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St., Camarillo (NE corner, at Carmen); 805-523-2682.
+
Click on this music link-http://www.jeniandbilly.com/audio/With_Fond_Affection_hifi.m3u - to listen to while you read the following. When JENI & BILLY played thr Caltech Folk Music Series last weekend, series producers Nick Smith and Rex Meyreis had written for that series’ mailing list, “You may not have heard of this this couple, from Gilead, North Carolina, but one of us has seen them live, and we've been listening to their recent recording, “Longing for Heaven,” and they ARE special! JENI HANKINS and BILLY KEMP personify the Appalachian music tradition, with a spare, but pure and beautiful style that leaves one feeling filled and satisfied. Jeni's vocals have been compared to the great Appalachian singer JEAN RITCHIE, and they share a tradition of work songs, hymns, and ballads. Jeni is an outstanding songwriter, who is able to embody the vitality of these time-tested themes in her own writing, extending the tradition and bringing in new elements. In Billy, she has the perfect partner whose vocal harmonies serve as a counterpart to her own, and his instrumental support is a foundation of their sound. They are fine performers on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, but the vocals are always foremost. The genuine affection they have for each other and for the music makes their performance all the more delightful.”
+
The GUIDE was at that show, the second time we’ve seen JENI & BILLY perform, and they were wonderful, both musically and with Jeni’s storytelling that informs their music.
+
Learn more about them at their web site, www.jeniandbilly.com where you can read lyrics and more. The producers want us to pass along their Youtube videos, too, and when you watch them, you’ll be hooked. “If I Ever Get Ten Dollars” is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qU64Yngelc, and “Cecil Roberts Hand” is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=zunyUM1pUyE.
+
JACK TEMPCHIN shares the bill tonight. A legendary songwriter, he penned “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Already Gone,” and other hits for EAGLES members and the band as a whole. His songs are anthems for a generation and integral components of the best-selling album of the twentieth century, “Eagles Greatest Hits.”. Jack Tempchin wrote or co-wrote these two, and three other iconic songs for the legendary band The Eagles. He also wrote the hit song “Slow Dancin’” for Johnny Rivers, plus many others for Glenn Frey, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, Chris Hillman, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Tanya Tucker, Richie Havens, The Paladins, Kate Wolf, Tom Rush and NRPS. Himself a talented musician with a unique voice, Jack will treat our Camarillo Café audience to tasty solo acoustic renditions of many of his huge songwriter hits and other inspired compositions that are sure to become hits with you. Fri, May 18; a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
8 pm RICK RUSKIN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations, 626-798-6236 (Call 10 am-10 pm).
+
RICK RUSKIN, internationally acclaimed guitarist, is never content to merely dazzle listeners with technical expertise. Rick has honed his craft so that that it his music that audiences remember rather than any flashy guitaristic “swoops and dives.” And while his skills are legendary, the label of “Fingerstyle Guitar Virtuoso” tells only part of the story. He is also a gifted singer, arranger, and composer whose work has been featured in film and on television. Those attending this show will be treated to an evening of originals, folk, pop, blues, R&B, and humor – all with that unique Rick Ruskin signature.
+
> “It’s an education every time I hear him play.” – James Lee Stanley.
> “So brilliant at times that he seems to transcend normal approaches to the guitar.” - Guitar Player Magazine.
> "One of the best finger-style guitarists in the country." - (Folk Scene Magazine). "A standout guitarist." – Billboard.
> "Ruskin's touch is peerless, his playing is flawless." - Arts Magazine
> "He has impeccable technique and the good taste and sense to know that merely showing off technical wizardry can be deathly boring." - Milwaukee Weekly.

Fri, May 18:
8 pm KINA GRANNIS at the Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Bl East, Hollywood 90068; 323-GO1-FORD (323-461-3673); www.FordTheatres.org.
+
Kina Grannis started playing shows at the age of 4 in front of stuffed animals. Now she plays in front of people. For those who knew Kina as the shy and self-proclaimed-awkward songstress who escaped into her collegiate stairwells to practice and play in privacy, the idea of playing in front of inanimate objects might actually seem fitting. But between those who travel across state and country lines to her sold out live shows and those navigating through her extensive library of YouTube videos, its quite clear that Kina is hardly playing for no one.
+
Box dinner orders available for some shows at 310-652-3797. [aka John Anson Ford Amphitheatre.] Come early and bring your picnic at tables & chair in the “leafy entryway” by the waterfalls (you can bring your own wine or other beverage, and grounds open 2 hours before show time for picnicking). Food & drink are available on-site, though they always run out of hot cocoa when it’s chilly. Tix are $21, or $25 with a meet & greet.

LILY WILSON plays Molly Malone's, 575 S Fairfax Av, L.A. 90036; www.mollymalonesla.com; 323-935-1577. Check with venue for set time. She’s special. Take a gander at her press:
+
"Wilson is an accomplished singer-songwriter with a well-honed ear for pop hooks and melodic flights. Her songs, which generally deal with self-discovery, and love and its various consequences, are fresh and bright, and exude California sunshine." — Leicester Bangs "words-R-us" (Leicester, England)
+
" Wilson's voice is high and soothing, but still maintains enough power to push to the forefront of some very dense arrangements… Between Lily Wilson's gorgeous voice and Mark Browne's impeccable production, every song is able to offer something unique to the listener… Fortunately for Wilson, her exceptional blending of different musical styles has made "Harbour" a great place for various music fans to dock." — Heath Andrews
+
"Throughout Harbour, Wilson’s passion for life and music is evident. While her talent is undeniable, in a world full of singer-songwriters it’s hard for many to stand out from the crowd. Luckily, beautiful ballads like “Build It Again” set her apart. Segueing effortlessly from the more up-tempo tracks to the heartfelt ballads, Wilson is a musician to reckon with. " — Annie Reuter

It's a very fun, very musical all-day cavalcade of fine players and singers, most of them VERY accomplished recording artists. Each act does only BOB DYLAN covers, sometimes in styles that are surprising and make you say “oh, wow!” and there are no repeated songs. The house band alone is always worth the price of admission. There’s food and a bar available (private school is the venue, and the event benefits the school).
+
"Wherever you look, there is an air of magic. People are laughing and singing along with performers and reciting words that flowed from a collective soul, music and images from one mind, shared at this moment in a festival tribute to Bob Dylan. Andy Hill & Renee Safier have created an annual event with a stellar line-up..." - B. Noel Barr, Music Writer, "Celebrating the Music of the Man from Hibbing, Minnesota" -- Random Lengths, May 2009.

7:30 pm Great double bill: JENI & BILLY bring their delightful Appalachian music and storytelling, plus SUSIE GLAZE AND HILONESOME and their fine bluegrass / folk-Americana sharing the night at “THE LIVING TRADITION” concert series at Anaheim Downtown Community Center, 250 E Center St, Anaheim 92805; 714-955-3807.
+
SUSIE GLAZE & HILONESOME share the evening. The Guide’s editor, writing the annual “Best of / Top Ten” for FolkWorks, named them among the best acoustic bands in Southern California. This will be a fine evening, and one that serves to prepare your musical sensibilioties for Sunday’s Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival.

Two of the most highly respected, passionate and widely covered American singer-songwriters bring their gifts to the CGB for what venue impresario Bob Stane calls, “an unforgettable evening of emotional power.” These veteran performers cut their teeth on traditional American Folk-Jazz. It's in their DNA. But each has gone on to develop a style uniquely his own.
+
LIND: His 1966 mega hit, "Elusive Butterfly" helped shape and define Folk-Rock. His songs have been recorded by more than 200 top artists, including Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Cher and Dolly Parton. But nothing equals the power of watching him deliver his own songs. Critic Walter Savinski summed it up this way:
+
“Come and see why this engaging poet/guitarist/philosopher/singer/wise-ass has endured in the sometimes-cruel and always-fickle music business for more than 40 years. But be prepared to feel emotions you may not have let yourself feel in a while – feelings that may scare you a little. His songs hit the heart like a wrecking ball!”
+
O'KEEFE: He rocked the music world in 1972 when his "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" exploded onto the charts. His songs have garnered covers by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Cab Calloway and countless others. Danny's music continues to evolve, inspiring famed novelist Tom Robbins to say:
+
“As darkly seasoned with raw experience as it is brilliantly inlaid with poetic insight, O'Keefe's work this past decade constitutes the most moving musical meditations since Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind. Unblinking, hammer-hard, love-wise and haunting, these songs stay alive in the mind and the heart long after the laser has moved on."

"NEWS FEATURES” is a fresh edition most each week, with news and reviews from the acoustic music universe, features on folk-Americana and “acoustic renaissance” music and artists, a litlle from the electric side of honky-tonk Americana, the latest tours, recordings and projects, reviews of CDs and live shows, industry news, news for artists, and more.
It’s always available by clicking-through at www.acousticmusic.net
or at

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).
.
We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.
We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.) .
.
And, as Spring blooms and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.
.
As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)! .
