Saturday (tonight) is over-abundant with first-rate offerings. If you need a FREE show, here's a mini-review and recommendation of something we saw Friday that returns tonight.
.
The "Grand Performances" series, now in its 27th season, is presenting its best show of the season. Think "Hawai'ian Celtic Woman meets Broadway" with a touch of Vegas. With a cast of about 30 dancers and musicians and countless costume changes, NA LEI HULU I KA WEKIU brings the music and dance of Hawai'i with plenty of tasty borrowing and drafting from other genres. They last played here in 2005 and many in the audience remembered them and returned with them.
.
From the Bay Area, they added top award-winning musicians from Hawai'i. The sound and lighting are superb, as are the vocal harmonies.
.
The Guide had already named it a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick. We brought a group of five, ranging from age 15 to a senior citizen. All were thrilled. There's more in the Guide's August 10 edition, including the location and saving on parking.
.
We need to add that you can no longer bring alcohol in your pre-show picnic; the regulators have cracked-down. All else is fun, fun, fun and the show is FREE.

JOHN DOE plus GRAM RABBIT play Pershing Square, 5th and Olive, downtown L.A., 8-11 pm.
.
GRASSLANDS are the ones playing the free weekly show at Me n Ed's Pizza in Lakewood (the August 10 edition doesn't say "who"). And that's a great way to get ready for the annual big "BLUEGRASS AT THE FORD" show Sunday night (tix still available for that one)...

Thanks for this recommendation! We took a group to the free Grand Performance and we all had a terrific good time! I would have missed it completely!
ReplyDeleteI got dragged to this by my girlfriend who says she wants to learn hula. I don't get why but we both had a good time. I was really impressed by the staging and lighting. You are right to compare it with a broadway show. I would go see this again even without her.
