Spotlight Events • August 10, 2012 Edition • Acoustic Americana Music Guide

.

What, no more women’s water polo on TV?  No more cheering for the fleet of foot, the sultans of splash?  After Sunday, no more Olympics for two years?  And then we’ll need long johns and ear muffs for the next one?  Unthinkable, amidst all this sultry heat.

+

Hey, some delightful outdoor concerts happen all over the place in the evenings, when it cools-off nicely.  And those wonderful air-conditioned indoor venues need your business after the hits they took during The Games.  You can still add some great times and fond memories this summer, y’know.

+

For about the same price as a crappy new movie and popcorn, you can enjoy live music (and better food than fake-butter-drenched popcorn).  Seriously.  So go hear some live music!  You deserve it, already.  We do our part to get you there. HUNDREDS of choices await, herein.

THE FORMAT / HOW THIS WORKS

.

Things around these parts? They’s chronological, pard. We herd ’em by date and time of day. Festivals list first in their own daily section (the days they happen), followed by the day’s chronology of CONCERTS an’ CLUB GIGS an’ COFFEE HOUSE SHOWS an’ everything else.

.

Scroll – or use the Guide’s new SEARCH function – as necessary, to get to the day or evening you want to go out. Works for today / tonight, or all the way to next year. AND, you can use the Guide’s new SEARCH tool to look for your favorite act or venue! (Search tip: we often use “&” instead of “and” in band names.)

Tom Russell steps front and center with guitarist Thad Beckman in, coincidentally enough, Beckman Institute Auditorium, known to locals as “Little Beckman.” (No, that doesn’t make Thad “Big Beckman;” Caltech has one of those, too.)

+

Tom has never performed at Caltech, and series producers Rex and Nick tell us, “We're very excited to welcome him.”

+

About his most recent recording, “Mesabi,” the Washington Post wrote last year, "The album consistently confirms Russell’s status as one of the best singer-songwriters of our time." The Boston Globe called the CD "a crafted treasure of engaging nobility" and the Chicago Sun Times wrote, "A master storyteller triumphs." There is an almost literary quality to his work, as many of his songs zero in on individuals and situations with intensity and insight.

+

San Francisco poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, wrote, "Tom Russell is Johnny Cash, Jim Harrison and Charles Bukowski rolled into one. I feel a great affinity with Tom Russell's songs, for he is writing out of the wounded heart of America." Author Annie Prouxl called him "an original, a brilliant songwriter with a restless curiosity and an almost violent imagination."

+

This concert affords an intimate opportunity for you to come hear and decide for yourself. WE’re confident you will leave suitably impressed, and with one or more of his many CDs.

+

You can get a taste of Tom Russell’s music on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAp3bhouXYI with a solo performance of the song “Love Abides,” and at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1Au1HeVzwU for his signature treatment of the classic song, “Navajo Rug.”

+

There’s plenty more on Tom's web site, http://www.tomrussell.com.

+

Rex and Nick add, “We highly recommend that you get your tickets in advance and get them soon. Half of the seats are sold, so we may be out by the night of the concert”. Tickets are $22, $5 for Caltech students and children, for this show and You can order them from the Caltech Ticket Office at 626-395-4652.

Sat, Aug 11, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

8 pm LOAFER’S GLORY, the all-star acoustic roots band of Herb pedersen, Tom sauber, Patrick sauber. & Bill Bryson, plays the second of their two local CD release shows, this one at McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl (Pico at 31st), Santa Monica 90405; www.mccabes.com; 310-828-4403; tix, 310-828-4497.

+

The band says, “Our new CD on Arhoolie Records is a pip. We hope to see you there and be in on the fun, where we publicly humiliate each other, and play some hot music for you!”

+

The Guide received an advance copy of the mastered tracks that became this CD. It is one of the best albums of this or any year.

+

LOAFER'S GLORY features legends of pickin' & grinnin'. It’s a unique engagement of the finest of bluegrass players. Live? They deliver a show that you’ll talk about for years.

+

Herb Pedersen is marvelous on guitar and vocals. A member of the Desert Rose Band, Pedersen also fronted his own band called the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, and worked with the Pine Valley Boys, Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, Smokey Grass Boys, Old and in the Way, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne, John Denver, John Jorgenson, and Leland Sklar.

+

Tom Sauber plays fiddle and banjo and does vocals. He has helped bring authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture “The Long Riders.” He appeared in “Bound for Glory,” “Geronimo,” and numerous TV movies and series.

+

PATRICK SAUBER plays banjo and mandolin, and does vocals. He’s toured Japan and works frequently with Grammy winner LAURIE LEWIS. Patrick is son of old time player Tom Sauber, and he has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, from Bill Monroe to more current styles. He sings all the needed parts in the harmony trio and quartet numbers.

+

BILL BRYSON plays upright bass and does vocals. Where hasn’t this guy been? Bill has a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled upright bass players in the business, he's been with great groups that include The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. He's a wonderful lead singer, and is in demand one as one of the best baritones today. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

+

Their new CD on Arhoolie Records will be available at the show. Tix, $15.

Sat, Aug 11:

8 pm THE FOLK COLLECTION brings all the classic songs of the ’50s-’60s Folk Revival era for an evening at “Russ and Julie's House Concert” Series in Oak Park (Agoura Hills / Westlake Village area). Reservations get directions at 818-707-2179 or rsvp@houseconcerts.us.

+

THE FOLK COLLECTION are Tony Unger, Ed Labowitz, Mike Sirota and bass man Bob Packham. They grew up in the 1960s, fell in love with the story-songs and 3-part harmonies of that acoustic era, and do their best to recreate the magic. Ed and Tony have been a duo on and off since their days at Hollywood High School. Mike joined the group in 2003 and Bob in early 2005.

+

Much of their repertoire is familiar to audiences of all ages. With songs like "This Land is Your Land," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?," and John Denver tunes, as well as Tony's original compositions, The Folk Collection is reminiscent of such groups as The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, The New Christy Minstrels, and The Brothers Four.

+

They put on a show centered around folk music and good clean jokes. The Folk Collection could just as well be named the "Singing the Classic Songs of the '60s Folk Era" group. They get audiences singing along, toe-tapping, and wanting more.

+

It's been five years since The Folk Collection last graced the stage at Russ & Julie's House Concerts and the hosts tell us, “We're happy to have them back for what is guaranteed to be another fun evening.”

+

Catch the Folk Collection's promotional video at http://vimeo.com/8589738.

+

Suggested donation for the evening is $20 per person, payable in cash at the door. All the money goes to the performers. Included is a potluck-style coffee and dessert buffet. Doors at 7:30 pm, show at 8.

Tue, Aug 28, film & live music performance, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:

7:30 pm DANIEL HO, Hawai’ian music legend, performs prior to the screening of “MY KOALOHA STORY,” the latest in the “REEL TO REAL” series at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Sound Stage, 800 W Olympic Bl, L.A. 90015; 213-765-6803; www.grammymuseum.org.

+

Traditionally a Hawai’ian instrument, the 4-string guitar-like ukulele has found a niche in popular music and has been embraced by the mainstream of folk-Americana. Its unique sound can impart an instant island tone to any piece of music.

+

“My KoAloha Story” follows KoAloha Ukulele owner ALVIN OKAMI and his journey into the craft. Alvin and his ohana – Hawai’iain for “family” – have been dedicated to crafting the highest quality ukes for going on two decades. Their story goes beyond that, into music and family and how a small instrument can change lives and bring people together. ALAN joins ALVIN, two members of the OKAMI KoAloha ohana at this evening event.

+

Before the program, guests are welcome to DANIEL HO and ALAN OKAMI for a one-hour workshop titled “UKULELE 101” at 5 pm. It’s an informal class, a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about the beloved little ukulele. Done in Hawai’ian “talk story” style, both Danial and Alan share their love for, and knowledge of, this special instrument. You are welcome to bring your uke to learn to strum along, though you can attend without one.

+

Presented by American Express, and AmEx ticket purchasers will receive a special gift. All proceeds benefit the GRAMMY Museum. More info, 213-765-6803. Tix are $10 advance, available only by AmEx card until August 15; check with venue for price and availability at door.

LAUREN ADAMS plays “Julie’s Joint” House Concerts in the SFV. Reservations get directions at juliesjoint@johnzipperer.com.

+

The Guide has high regard for LAUREN ADAMS. Here are some excerpts from the Guide’s review in our News Features edition of July 27, 2012:

+

“Lauren’s song ‘Thirsty,’ title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock.

+

“Lauren found a Michigander in the crowd to receive the dedication of her song, “Henry from Saginaw Michigan.” It’s a solid honkytonker that should have ’em dancin’ at the Cowboy Palace.

+

“… Be sure to catch Lauren Adams when she performs in town, or at her monthly “Americana Song Circle” showcase at Genghis Cohen.”

Peter Dreier, professor and chair of the Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College, will discuss how Guthrie’s experiences in Southern California during the Depression inspired his radical views about social and political conditions. Dreier will also sign copies of his recently published book, “The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame.” The book includes Woody Guthrie among the 100 artists, activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and politicians profiled.

This world is such a great and a funny place to be

Oh, the gamblin’ man is rich an’ the workin’ man is poor

And I ain’t got no home in this world anymore.”

– Woody Guthrie
