Annual “SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVAL” is both a street festival and a related series of performances in Hollywood venues. If you like HANK III or THE DOORS, read on. Otherwise, it’s not likely to interest folk-Americana fans. But it is a very big deal, so we want you to be aware of it.

Here’s one quote: “For the fifth year running, the Sunset Strip Music Festival is invading L.A. Acts like Hank III and RZA will hit the Strip's coolest clubs, while headliners including Marilyn Manson and Bad Religion will play on massive outdoor stages.” - RollingStone.com, which named SSMF one of the “Coolest Summer Festivals” in its edition for July 11, 2012.

SSMF 2012 will celebrate the music and legacy of THE DOORS throughout the festival. Performances include ROBBY KRIEGER of THE DOORS & RICH ROBINSON (Viper Room), X with special guest RAY MANZAREK of THE DOORS (The Roxy), HANK III (House of Blues), RZA (Key Club), and JAMES INGRAM (Whisky) in the venues on Thursday, August 16 and Friday, August 17. DENNIS WITCHER is a fine vocalist and mandolin player, equally well known for his witty and folksy introductions at bluegrass festivals and shows, anything where bluegrass is involved.

Dennis writes songs with outstanding singer and flatpick guitarist TONY RECUPIDO. Dennis says that while the band has not been doing shows together of late, he and Tony have been working together on writing new songs, so expect some tunes you’ve never heard before, together with their well-known originals and traditional favorites.

MIKE WITCHER is highly in-demand as a session Dobro player in California and Nashville. He has performed and recorded with LAURIE LEWIS, DOLLY PARTON, and DWIGHT YOAKAM, and has toured extensively with the PETER ROWAN BAND.

LOREN WITCHER’s main career is working with children, in addition to being a graphic artist. But you couldn’t grow up in that family without becoming an accomplished musician.

THE WITCHER BROTHERS perform rarely these days, so don’t miss this fine opportunity. The band was founded in the Los Angeles area by Dennis and another son, GABE WITCHER, in 1985, when Gabe was a six year-old fiddle prodigy. They have been a staple of the local bluegrass scene ever since – and it’s the popularity of the band’s members with other major players in the music world that keeps them from performing together very often. Gabe is constantly on the go with international travel with his current band, the PUNCH BROTHERS, which includes CHRIS THIELE, and they’ll be in Australia on the night of this show.

Rex says, “It took a lot of maneuvering to find a date to get MIKE WITCHER to come down from the Bay area between [his] PETER ROWAN tours and other commitments, so we are very excited. Mike’s twin brother, Loren, makes his living helping children with the group Tools for Peace, as well as his graphic design work. Loren is a fine bass player, and we look forward to having another Witcher on the stage.

This performance was arranged by the people behind the Caltech Folk Music Society, a group that Pitt helped to establish 30 years ago.

PITT KINSOLVING has long been an important behind-the-scenes presence in the Southern California folk music community, going back more than three decades. Pitt’s volunteer involvement and expertise were a crucial link in keeping the Caltech Folk Music Society going when founder Brian Toby left Caltech. Pitt was largely responsible for another wonderful live folk series in Pasadena at AEA (Audio Engineering and Associates). He played a role in the “Bound for Glory” concert series at the Sportsman’s Lodge in the mid-1980s. In more recent years, he's been a big presence with the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival. And he has been very involved with Songmakers and the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club – among other groups.

This show was crafted by some of his friends from the Caltech Folk Music Society and others to help Pitt beat cancer and the medical bill collectors, following his two surgeries earlier this year. Pitt is back home and able to drive, and planning to come to the show. You can shake his hand if you like. The show is NOT a part of the Caltech Folk Society series, and all money raised by ticket sales and contributions will go directly to Pitt to help him in his battle against cancer.

“My KoAloha Story” follows KoAloha Ukulele owner ALVIN OKAMI and his journey into the craft. Alvin and his ohana – Hawai’iain for “family” – have been dedicated to crafting the highest quality ukes for going on two decades. Their story goes beyond that, into music and family and how a small instrument can change lives and bring people together. ALAN joins ALVIN, two members of the OKAMI KoAloha ohana at this evening event.

a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
Annual “NATIONAL COWBOY POETRY FESTIVAL” with lots of top award-winning western music and, yep, cowboy poetry. Acts known so far include TOM RUSSELL, doing two concerts and a songwriting workshop, and “a hundred great cowboy acts” including RAMBLIN’ JACK ELLIOTT, and PAUL ZARZSYKSI. There are “tons of exhibits on the West” and much more at this depth-of-winter indoor festival. It’s important to book early, because lodgings fill-up for a hundred miles or more.
