Across America and throughout the world, remembrances, including concerts, are happening today. Some of these began two years ago, to mark 30 years since the world lost the music giant with the gentle spirit. New or old, the observances have become local traditions, a chance for personal expression of a nearly universal sense of the value of one artist's having lived.

I was in 3rd grade when President Kennedy was killed. I was in 7th grade when Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were killed. I was just out of grad school when John Lennon was killed. To this day, I am never far from knowing that the music of Lennon-McCartney were a lot of how I managed to find joy during that entire period, a time when so much was brutal and dark. Others were far more effective voices against the war in Vietnam. But not many of them left songs for all time. The line about Lincoln, 'now he belongs to the ages,' also fits John Lennon.

I never knew that John Lennon had a sidewalk star by Capitol Records. Very appropriate. I'm going. - Sue
ReplyDeleteMy dad grew up too late for the Beatles but he always says they were important to him anyway. My friends and I think the same for us. We are in high school. There are no songwriters for our age group that come close to John Lennon.
ReplyDeleteAt our house, Imagine has always been one of our Christmas carols. Betty
ReplyDelete32 years ago? Am I that old? Is the world that old? I'll be at the memorial today. Maybe to find out.
ReplyDeleteOdd isn't it? Everyone hated Yoko until John was murdered. Then you couldn't help but feel for her, because we all lost that special man.

To the previous poster: Yes, you are that old. It's the music that is timeless.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was about folk and americana music. Why are all these people crying over a rock star whose been dead thirty years? I remember you wrote something nice for Doc Watson and you do nice things when folk players die. Not to be insensitive, but leave the rock people to the rock sites.
ReplyDeleteThat post from the person who didn't mean to be insensitive? You mean like you just were? Try this on, banjoface: THE most covered songs as acoustic recordings are Beatles songs and most of them were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

I never knew that John Lennon was killed on Jim Morrison's birthday. Realized that because vh1 classic is doing "Day of The Doors" all day for Jim's birthday. Noticed you didn't list that. Good concert stuff and good interviews with The Doors' Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore at different points from what I have seen.
