He says, "My story is played, sung, and spoken, and shown in the light of my many years of musical experiences. It reveals something of the mystery of how I arrived at where I am today. I touch upon music that has struck me and stimulated my imagination through the '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and the 2000s,until now. And I tell my side of the story of who I am."

Sat, Dec 8, in Palmdale:
6 pm “SPECIAL HOLIDAY HATTRICK” as GARY McGRATH, JOHN M., and LAURA BROWNE-SORENSON accompanied by guitarist MARK BURGESS, at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; www.butlerscoffee.com; 661-272-9530. This show starts an hour earlier than usual.
+
From straight outta Forth Worth comes the Grammy-winning, diesel fired singer-songwriter, producer and guitar whiz kid GARY McGRATH, aka "the guy that wrote 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'," aka "the Bowling for Soup guy that wrote '1985'," aka "the guy who's played with the Monkees, Jon Bon Jovi and assorted members of Nazareth, Three Dog Night and a zillion other bands." This is Gary's last show at Butler's before heading back to the Lone Star state, and he'll be joined on stage by Dean Minnerly (Three Dog Night, Aretha Franklin) and several other pals, living legends and people looking for a good cup of coffee.
+
Following hot on Gary's heels will be the man known as JOHN M., a compelling singer-songwriter who isn't afraid to bring the passion and grit of rock'n'roll to any stage. John's savvy mix of originals and well-chosen covers are delivered with conviction, passion and even sometimes, yes, grace.
+
And finally, Butler's little sweetheart, LAURA BROWNE-SORENSON, returns, aided and abetted by guitar slinger, slide vituoso and known accomplice MARK BURGESS. Together the Dynamic Duo will be singing and playing some of their all-time favourite tunes, plus a sprinkling of originals, which will pretty much tie the bow on a night of great music. Laura, of course, is part of the Butler's-approved THE BROWNE SISTERS, as well as an acclaimed singer-songwriter in her own right, while Mark pretty much can play anything with strings -- he studied classical guitar at The American Institute of Guitar in New York City, jazz guitar at Mason Gross School of the Arts, and with Robert Fripp of King Crimson.
+
No cover. Just buy something to eat and a drink.

The Sandwich Islands Network presents "HAWAI’IAN PIDGIN ENGLISH SONGS & STORIES" as a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season with island songs and stories told by KAMAKA BROWN to the musical accompaniment of slack key guitarist T. DAN HOFSEDT.
+
Kamaka has toured the Pacific Northwest and Southern California with his stories to rave reviews. Here’s what Bob Stane had to say about Kamaka’s performances:
+
"KAMAKA BROWN and his show of music and stories is one of my all-time favorite shows at The Coffee Gallery Backstage. This is an offering from a sharp, professional comedian and talented musician replete with a full cadre of supporting wits and players.
+
“This is a genuine musical presentation with a generous serving of funny stagecraft. What a delight they are. He and his musician friends weave a tuneful spell between stories of childhood thrills, vivid memories and unique adventures. All from the perspective of soothing country life in sleepy Hawaii. Music is played. Philosophy is exchanged and native wisdom shared. And the music! If anyone in the audience does not like the multi-instrumental extravaganza they are "soul deprived" and seriously humor impaired. The stories are clever and funny.
+
“I have offered Kamaka Brown my ultimate compliment and booking opportunity: ‘You can play for me anytime we mutually have an opening. Your show will always be a hit.’"
+
Kamaka returns for his 5th visit to Backstage with a holiday show that is sure to sell out quickly. Tix, $20.

+
Everyone of any age must hear these two pieces performed live at least once in their life, for the sake of their own cultural literacy -- especially Americans. They are two of the central works in American music. Now, you’re about to see the “J” word: don’t go shrieking into the woodlands, because we’ll deliver you safely back to the land of folk-Americana. While both pieces are still cited as “bring jazz elements to classical music,” that really has not been appropriate for decades. and it always ignored Copland’s use of folk-Americana in many of his pieces, especially this one. “Jazz elements” in the context of the 1930s and ’40s sound nothing like where jazz went after that. Anyone with only modern jazz sensibilities, since their genre got all pretentious, endlessly repetitive and boring, will recognize no jazz themes at all in either of these works. And Copland? The central theme in Appalachian Spring is the old Shaker hymn, “Simple Gifts,” taken to such soaring and epic dimensions that portion of this piece featuring it have been used as themes for TV shows, including EDWARD R. MURROW’S groundbreaking investigative TV hours and the ’50s-’60s CBS News documu-drama series “The Twentieth Century.” As for Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”? When the American Freedom Train was being designed as the only nationwide Bicentennial project, the train’s “arts car” full of iconic masterpiece paintings and sculptures had only one piece of music as its soundtrack. Yep, this one, by George Gershwin. The concert runs Dec 8 & 9, one performance each in two different venues; info and tix at www.laco.org.

Brocelîande is a fine trio from Northern California. They will take you back in time with a Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque slant on music for the Solstice, Christmas and other seasonal events, with lush arrangements featuring the Celtic harp, cello, guitars, recorders, hardanger cello d'amore, octave mandolin, nyckelharpa, oboe, flute, and percussion.
+
Series co-producer NICK SMITH says, “The harp and cello sound magnificent together, as do the rest of their instrumentation, so you are in for a treat. It looks like another cool night is in store on Saturday, so we look forward to an evening warmed by great music, plenty of Nancy's great cookies, the usual brownies, coffee, hot cider, tea, and maybe even hot chocolate. Sat, Dec 8, in Santa Barbara Co (Santa Ynez):
8 pm KINKY FRIEDMAN plays the Maverick Saloon, 3687 Sagunto St, Santa Ynez; 805-686-4785.
+
Novelist, columnist, musician, cigar and tequila mogul, animal rescuer, former candidate for Governor of Texas, and ever-clever reprobate, there is only one Kinky Friedman. If you’ve never seen him, you must. If you have, you probably already have tickets. This is his “BiPolar Tour and fact-finding mission.” Perhaps he will answer the question, “Will he or won’t he run for governor again?” And he will play songs from his new live album, “Live at Woodstock.”
+
Aside from his pending political rebirth, Kinky is both energized and excited about all things Kinky, not least of which is his new book written with WILLIE NELSON, “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.” Kinky’s extensive forward and full-on collaboration with Willie has perked the ears of the publishing world, and the book promises to be one of the top sellers of the fall and winter seasons. Additionally, conversations have already begun with major publishers about a return of Kinky’s intrepid detective . . . himself, with a two-book deal in the offing.
+
The BiPolar World Tour is nothing if not a fact-finding mission, as Kinky calculates national political views, particularly toward the Kinkster himself. For Kinky is considering a second run for Texas governor. After a plethora of recent (and ongoing) gaffes by Texas’ Rick Perry, one of the nation’s least popular sitting governors, the Kinkster will bring a fresh view of Texas politics with him. Pollsters and the Kinky-ites believe he can win this time. Most Texans (and a whole lot of other Americans) already know who is the true governor of the heart of Texas.
+
Kinky will be hawking a new live solo CD, “Live From Woodstock,” recorded on the first American leg of the BiPolar Tour and featuring some of his best work ever. He will also introduce KINKY FRIEDMAN’S “MAN IN BLACK TEQUILA” to Californians, with tastings at most venues and auctions in each city of three-bottle gift boxes. All profits from the auctions go to the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, Kinky’s favorite 501(c)3 charitable organization.
+
While Kinky is excited about “Live From Woodstock” it’s not the only CD he’s touring. Rising star roots performer JESSE DAYTON has recorded an entire album of Kinky’s songs, called “Jesse Sings Kinky,” and it’s getting major attention on Americana radio, especially at SiriusXM. Dayton has been starring as Kinky in road productions of the stage play “Becoming Kinky,” by prize-winning playwright TED SWINDLEY, who created the world smash “Always — Patsy Cline.” International productions of the play will be heading across the pond in 2013. So he has plenty to talk about. That makes him dangerous and very, very entertaining.

6 pm JAMES INTVELD and KENNETH BRIAN headline, plus openers the BOBBY BLUEHOUSE BAND play an unusually early show at the Arcadia Blues Club, 16 E Huntington Dr, Arcadia 91006; www.arcadiabluesclub.com; 626-447-9349.
+
It’s blues from JAMES INTVELD, Nashville; KENNETH BRIAN, Alabama.
+
KENNETH BRIAN has a brand new album, “Welcome to Alabama”. It is doing very well for them. In February, it hit #2 on the Americana Charts in Europe. It was produced by Southern Rock pioneer JOHNNY SANDLIN, and features guest performances by everyone from JASON ISBELL to BONNIE BRAMLETT. The title track is being used by the University of Alabama football team to rouse the crowd during home games. Their live shows are intense and exciting, featuring top-notch playing and tons of sheer raw energy.
+
JAMES INTVELD, currently a resident of Nashville, started his career at an early age listening and singing along to his parents' recordings of Hank Williams, Sr., Dean Martin, Lefty Frizzell and Elvis. Initially, Intveld worked with his younger brother Ricky and friend Pat Woodward in a band known as the ROCKIN' SHADOWS. The group dissolved when Ricky and Woodward left to work with RICK NELSON'S STONE CANYON BAND; both later died in the same airplane accident that took the life of Nelson. It was only fate that kept James from getting on that flight. It's a tragedy that cut, and still cuts deeply into his heart and soul.
+
As a multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter and sideman, James' name seems to crop up everywhere. He's in high demand for his skills as a player; as adept at the slap bass, slide, steel, and drums as on guitar. He's done everything from playing bass with DWIGHT YOAKUM to lead guitar with THE BLASTERS and most recently with JOHN FOGERTY.
+
Intveld wrote the ROSIE FLORES hit "Cryin' Over You" as well as all the material on his own first 1996 effort "James Intveld." That was named the best studio recording project and the best country or roots CD of 1996 by California's Music Connection magazine. Intveld successfully produced, arranged, sang, and played all the parts on this magnificent release, dedicated to his brother and best friend, Ricky.
+
James is continuously cast in movies, TV and videos. He was the singing voice of Johnny Depp's character in the John Waters film “Cry Baby.” Other credits include Sean Penn's directorial debut, "Indian Runner," "Thing Called Love," with River Phoenix, Billy Crystal's HBO production, "#61," and his role starring beside BILLY BOB THORTON in the motion picture, "Chrystal". Venue booker BOBBY BLUEHOUSE says, “We love it when James is not too ‘busy’ and puts in a performance at Arcadia Blues Club.”

+
His McCabe's performance earlier this year was among the venue’s “favorite McCabe's shows of all time (seriously),” says their booker. A contemporary of Bruce and Lou, Garland Jeffreys has long been an important part of New York's musical landscape, incorporating elements of reggae, rock, soul and blues into his music. He began playing the Greenwich Village hot spots in the mid-'60s, and then became friendly with the Velvet Underground, eventually collaborating on John Cale's 1970 solo release Vintage Violence. Jeffreys' eponymous debut came out on Atlantic Records in 1973, but it was the non album single, "Wild in the Streets," which generated the most attention. That tune, featuring Dr. John on clavinet, went on to become a punk/skateboarder anthem. His latest work is The King Of In Between, Jeffreys' first stateside release in more than a decade, and in our opinion, the finest album of his career. The venue adds, “We cannot recommend this show highly enough. Come see why.”

Sun, Dec 9, at UCLA:
7 pm L.A. CHAMBER ORCHESTRA performs GERSHWIN & COPLAND in a double-bill of two American classics, George Gershwin’s “RHAPSODY IN BLUE,” and Aaron Copland’s “APPALACHIAN SPRING SUITE,” in Royce Hall, 340 Royce Dr, on the UCLA campus at Royce Dr between Westwood Bl and Hilgard Av, West L.A.

Sun, Dec 9, in Ventura:
Time tba KINKY FRIEDMAN plays Zoey’s Café, 185 E Santa Clara St, Ventura 93001, Ventura; advance tix & info, www.zoeyscafe.com; 805-652-1137 or 805-652-0091.

Mon, Dec 10, in San Diego:
8 pm KINKY FRIEDMAN and MOJO NIXON play the Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Av, Solana Beach (San Diego) 92075; 858-481-9022

  1. What a good idea, to do Christmas shopping at ArtWalks! Unique gifts I can personalize by what I choose. Fit the present to the person. Good call!!! - Char

  2. O, O, Oooo MG! I just finished looking at Saturday in this thing. There's enough going on in LA in one day for the whole state or country or planet! And all this is only what is acoustic or honkytonk or americana-folk? And some classical, I saw that. So why is anything else even popular?

  4. This is a gold mine. Lots of rock with low grade ore, but plenty of sparkling nuggets you could never find unless you dig. So much in here that's in no other place.

  5. Yeaaaa for Art Walks! I used to sell at two of them until I had to take a job that leaves no time to create anything. The price of having 2 kids in school. But I still go to decorate my place and buy gifts and I like it a whole lot when they have good musicians playing! Doesn't matter to me if its a band or one person with a guitar as long as its good, and not bad covers.

  6. My wife is giving me a uke for Xmas. I just talked her into letting me have it early so I can do the uke event at the music center. She thanks you for letting us know about it because it might cut my learning curve and she won't be annoyed by my beginner's plinking for quite as long. - Billy

  7. Mary and Joseph! I just spun this thing to the bottom of the page so I could say thanks for including the radio show later today with Paul Zollo ( one if my favorite authors). I am blown away that so much could possibly be happening in this town! Now I need to go back and read it until time for that radio show. - Tia

  8. I really get lost here. But don't cut anything. You have the only place to discover things like Grassroots Acoustica and Songwriter Sanctum. I found a free classical concert to go to as well. Beats the hell outta the mall!

  9. Had to thank you! I was looking for Sunday concerts and spotted your tv listing for THE BOSS and E Streeter's this morning. Missed the first hour, because of finding it late. Bruce just finished an amazing version of BORN IN THE USA on 12-string with fattie glass slide, getting sounds almost like a sitar at times. I had never heard him do that. Fresh arrangement of old song was totally fresh! - Luther
